WORLD HEART
DAY 2015 – What
we should do?
Every year
w o r l d
h e a r t
day is
celebrated
on the 29th of
September.
This year
the focus
is on creating
heart healthy
environment.
Many adult health
problems such
as obesity high
blood pressure have
their early origins
in childhood, when
lifestyles such as
eating patterns,
exercise and smoking
evolve. Every effort
should be made to
discourage children
from adopting
harmful lifestyles.
Individual and mass
education will create
awareness on good
health.Socioeconomic
development plays
a major role in the
concept of “positive
health” of a society.
India is leading
in the incidence
of cardiovascular
diseases in the world.
“I can quit” should
be the slogan
of all smokers.
Enforcement on ban
of tobacco products,
educating smokers
public on the dangers
of tobacco are very
important. Smoke
free environment is
mandatory for good
health.
“I can relax” should
be the slogan to avoid
stress. Work places
can have programs
or events to reduce
stress.
“I can thrive” should
be the slogan where
every individual
focusses on eating
diets rich in vitamins,
minerals and fibre.
Diets rich in fat,
sugar and salt should
be avoided. Eating
healthy diet should
start from childhood.
“I can be active”
should be the slogan.
Engaging in routine
physical activities or
participating in sports
activities will help
reduce the incidence
of heart diseases and
control risk factors
such as high blood
pressure, diabetes
mellitus and high
cholesterol.
With increasing
incidence of heart
diseases comes
disability associated
with it which directly
affects the health care
cost. It is important
for families and
communities to take
steps to fight heart
disease.
Stepssuchassmoking
cessation, eating fibre
rich diet, engaging
in physical or sport
activity, creating a
pollution free, stress
free and smoking
free environment
at home work
places, educating
children on healthy
lifestyles and periodic
health screening will
change our country a
healthier place to live.
To quote in the lines of
Rabindranath Tagore
– “Into that heaven
of good health, my
father, let my country
awake”
