corporations like Webb India Ltd and American Axle & Manufacturing Inc. He is a
well respected manager in establishing and growing technology based companies
Aakash Pahwa is a B.E (Mechanical), MBA from FLAME School of Business with
6+ years experience in business development, marketing and project execution of
high technology industrial automation and robotics systems. He has worked with
German Robotics leader KUKA and with Hitech Robotic Systems Ltd.

DRDO (Defence Research & Development Organization) lab DMRL (Defence
Metallurgical Research Laboratory) developed this new Copper Titanium alloy.
DMRL made samples of CuTi for Non-sparking tools and demonstrated properties.
Copper Titanium was tested and certified by CIMFR (CSIR) for Non-Sparking
characteristics.
This technology is now offered for commercialization by DRDO as a part of DRDO-
FICCI ATAC Program.

6. Copper Beryllium Alloy (C17200)
• Copper Beryllium (CuBe), is a copper alloy
with 0.5-3% beryllium and sometimes with
other alloying elements.
• It is the strongest known copper alloy yet.

INHALING BERYLLIUM DUST OR
FUMES MAY CAUSE SERIOUS,
CHRONIC LUNG DISEASE AMONG
EXPOSED WORKERS;
THIS LUNG DISEASE CAN BE FATAL.
BERYLLIUM CAN ALSO CAUSE LUNG
CANCER.
• Chronic beryllium disease (CBD) primarily affects the
lungs.
• CBD may occur among people who are exposed to
the dust or fumes from beryllium metal, metal
oxides, alloys, ceramics or salts.
• CBD usually has a very slow onset, and even very
small amounts of exposure to beryllium can cause
the disease in some people.
• Some latest research suggests that skin can be a
route of exposure and sensitization in chronic
beryllium disease.

8. • Currently, OSHA’s eight-hour permissible exposure limit for beryllium is 2.0
micrograms per cubic meter of air.
• OSHA’s proposed standard would reduce the eight-hour permissible exposure
limit to 0.2 micrograms per cubic meter.
• Reduction by 10 times!
• OSHA estimates that the rule could prevent almost 100 deaths & 50 serious
illnesses each year.
• To date, the department has paid more than $500 million in compensation to
nearly 2,500 former or current workers who developed chronic beryllium
disease after being exposed to beryllium.

9. • Skin disease
• A skin disease, which is characterized by poor wound healing and a rash or
wart-like bumps, can occur as a result of the skin being exposed to beryllium
dust.
• Hazards of Corroded Copper Beryllium Items:
• Tools being used in corrosive environment, will tend to corrode.
• Corroded Copper Beryllium could be as much as 135 times more toxic and
harmful than Non-Corroded Copper Beryllium.

10. • Beryllium is a rare earth material and hence limited availability in the world.
• It has use in defence and aerospace applications hence closely controlled by Govts. of producing
countries. Very expensive and not easily available.
• Major safety hazard – Need Safety and health precautions while handling and machining.
• Extensive research worldwide to develop alternative. Partially success. No exact equivalent found.
• Many Non-Sparking Tool users have switched to cheaper Al-Br despite they having very poor strength
• Many companies/institutes have tried to make Copper Titanium alloy as a substitute with partial success.
