Varicose veins are enlarged and twisted veins, most commonly in the legs. They occur when valves in the great or small saphenous veins fail, causing blood to pool in the veins. Treatment options include ligation of the sapheno-femoral junction to block blood flow, stripping of the great saphenous vein to remove it, or newer minimal access methods.
