Therefore, if a firm are able to produce more and more of their products, they also have the
opportunity to reduce their costs. MABE was the largest appliance manufacturer in Latin America
which shows that they were able to produce more and more of the products for the demand of U.S.
market. Proving that they possessed the economies of scale in attaining the main key success
factors. Industry life cycle In the case we seen that MABE are able to produce locally and export
internationally which implies that they are in the mature stage of production cycle. The MABE
Company were growing faster since the implementation of the NAFTA. Porter's 5 Forces Rivalry
(High): The competition involved in the production of household appliances is high, although
MABE has the access to penetrate through the local and international market such as the export of
appliances to Caribbean, North America, Central America and Latin America. Innovation and cost–
effectiveness are one of the major key aspects to be considered when it comes to household
appliances. Therefore, MABE needs a lot of market strategies in the competitive market in order to
lead and penetrate the market trends among their competitors. Threat of New Entrants (Medium):

Marketing Analysis : Electrolux Organization
Electrolux manufactures an assortment of appliances for professional and home settings the
corporation was established in Sweden in 1919 and offers over 40 million products in excess of 150
marketplaces. Electrolux has sales totaling about 109 billion and at this time employs over 61,000
employees. The company is diverse and are marketing their products in countries all over the world,
fifty–percent of their transaction is done in the U.S. shadowed by Thirty–percent in Eurasia and the
other markets make up the outstanding twenty–percent (Electrolux in brief Electrolux Group, n.d.).
An Electrolux product provides consumers with well–made merchandise, and as far as providing
consumers with a competitive advantage in excess of others competitive markets, I would say it's
about marginal. The goods are particularly exceptional for instance, there are additional corporations
that manufacture the same kinds of goods; nonetheless, for an additional corporation to duplicate
their goods accurately it would be very expensive. The Electrolux organization is thriving to achieve
success and with their global structure they are capable of aligning assets to reinforce their locus in
the appliance market.
Now some essential marketplaces for instance China, where competitiveness is rigid, Electrolux will
have to alter their approach so they can continue to be economical. Electrolux proclaimed that they
had established innovative strategies towards becoming leaders in the home appliance

New Appliances In The 1920s
Appliances New appliances were a big part of the technological and social change during the 1920s.
The appliances were a big change and was the first attempt of a "smart house". It affected
housewives because now that the appliances were there, society expected them to clean the house
faster and keep it tidy all day. Appliances showed intolerance towards women, mostly housewives.
The appliances were an example of how Americans expected housewives to clean and nice for
guests and husbands since they had the "help" of appliances. They did not expect the house to ever
be dirty. KKK The KKK was an organization that formed around the civil war, whose purpose was

clubs, Harlem was known by many people and visited by people from all over. Harlem was a city
that showed pure Americanism. It was the birth of the first American music genre, and brought
people together in the clubs and the movie theaters. Speakeasy Speakeasies were secret bars during
prohibition. These bars were in closed shops at night and other secret spots to hide from the cops.
This was a big change from the nice bars that were legal before prohibition, but people still went to
them. Speakeasies showed the protest of American's against the government. Even though alcohol
was banned, people found away and went against the amendment, since prohibition was a tad bit
ridiculous. Clubs and Theaters These clubs and theaters were a big hit during the twenties and were
a great landmark of the changes in society during these times. They were home to great stars and the
theaters started the idea of hollywood and movies. Clubs and Theaters were a perfect example of the
intolerance towards just working for hours a day and having no down time. Now that downtime was

The development of E Manufacturing can be divided into five major phases. First is the brand–
building phase (1984–1991). By only focusing on refrigerators, the group had transformed its small
factory into the number one refrigerator brand in China. Second is diversification development
phase (1991–1998). In this phase, the group had successfully restructured from a single–product
company to a manufacturer with multiple product lines including both white and brown goods.
Moreover, E Manufacturing had adopted consumer–responsive innovation for particular customer
needs. Immediately followed by the third phase of global brand building (1998 –2012) to deepen its
market penetration. Foreign sales channels were launched by the group for entering into
international mainstream markets where it aims to integrate global resources to build a local brand
in each geographic area worldwide. At the beginning of 2013, E Manufacturing being inspired by
the latest wave of Internet–based companies is now undergoing the fifth phase–networking strategy
stage. The reinvention of the group as an Internet–based company in a way that few other companies
have attempted, let alone realized (Company's website). E Manufacturing's ambitious technological
internationalization strategy together with an intensive diversification and foreign market strategy

Swot Analysis : Strategic Planning
SWOT analysis is an examination of an organization's internal strengths and weaknesses, its
opportunities for growth and improvement, and the threats the external environment presents to its
survival. Originally designed for use in other industries, it is gaining increased use in healthcare.
Steps in SWOT Analysis The primary aim of strategic planning is to bring an organization into
balance with the external environment and to maintain that balance over time . Organizations
accomplish this balance by evaluating new programs and services with the intent of maximizing
organizational performance. SWOT analysis is a preliminary decision–making tool that sets the
stage for this work.

Strength–Threat (ST) strategy refers to the use of their own advantages to avoid or mitigate the
impact of external threats. It should take a diversified strategy, use their own advantages, and find
opportunities for long–term development in diversification; or it further enhances their competitive
advantage to counter the threat of competitors.
Weakness–threat (WT) strategy is a defensive technology designed to reduce internal weaknesses
and avoid external environmental threats. When the enterprise has internal and external problems, it
is often faced with survival crisis, and reducing costs may become the main measure to change the
disadvantage. Enterprises will take a defensive strategy to avoid disadvantages of costs and the
threat owning to costs.

Sears Business Essay
Sears has made several attempts to improve their business, most of which involved selling off assets
and closing stores. Sears has sold off all properties they once owned to Seritage and also sold their
Craftsman tools brand to Stanley Black and Decker. Another strategy Sears has tried to compensate
for their losses is closing stores. Sears has closed around 100 stores and continues to close more. It
was released that Sears is expected to close another 63 stores (45 Kmart and 18 Sears) by the end of
January 2018. Sears has made some attempts to improve by involving and trying to draw in new

Sears since Ed Lampert took over the company, it is clear his best interests are not with the company
and the stock price reflects that. When Edward Lampert took over Sears, the stock price was around
$40.00 and the stock price now is the lowest it has been around $3.00 (Yahoo Finance). Decisions
he has made could lead shareholders and the public to believe he is making decisions based solely
on his own personal interests and not for the good of Sears. Lampert is Sears largest lender and has
secured all of his money loaned with property or inventory, ensuring that he is paid if the company

shareholder of Sears, while also being the chairman of the board of trustees for Seritage. It is
difficult to believe he has the company's best interests in mind when when he only steps into the
headquarters once per year for the annual meeting. While firing Edward would be difficult and
extremely costly due to his large controlling interest, we feel this may be Sears only way to

Maytag Strategic Analysis
I. Executive Summary
Maytag Corporation was founded in 1893 by Fred L Maytag and two other men. The company built
its first washing machine in 1907. From there the company quickly expanded into a national
corporation. With the sweeping globalization movement of the 1990's, Maytag has attempted to
establish a presence as a global competitor in the appliance industry.
As the company has tried to establish itself in the developing global marketplace, it has had
difficulties. Not only were consumers taste and preferences changing in the domestic market, but the
company needed to develop products that would appeal to the new global markets. Maytag will need
a great deal of money to make these large changes.
The current strategy that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Technological forces also made a very large change in the mid–90s. With Microsoft's launch of the
first user friendly Windows program, home computer usage began to increase. Also Al Gore helped
the world–wide web launch during this time frame. With access to the internet, companies were also
able to use electronic data interchange (EDI) to help make purchase orders, schedule delivers and
other functions that are available when companies share data. Maytag also at this time is using fuzzy
logic in appliances. More technology will continue to be required in appliances as time moves on.
Porter's five forces are used to determine the competitive intensity and attractiveness of a market.
These are close forces that affect a company's ability to make a profit and serve customers. If any of
these forces change, a company must reassess its marketplace. The five forces include: the threat of
substitute products, the threat of the entry of new competitors, the intensity of competitive rivalry,
the bargaining power of customers and the bargaining power of suppliers.
Porter's five forces can be used to analyze Maytag. First, the threat of substitute products is low. The
only substitute for a washing machine is a large sink and a great deal of manual labor. Many of the
appliances have substitutes, but because those substitutes are so old and outdated there is not a threat
from them.
Second, the threat of entry of

The United States The Home Appliance Industry
In the United States the home appliance industry is a mature market with high penetration, therefore,
replacement product is significantly important to the industry. The United States has three major
manufacturers for domestic production: Whirlpool, General Electric, and Electrolux. The appliance
industry is changing rapidly and becoming more competitive with the influence of Asian
competitors, specifically, LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics, who are major appliance
importers. Subsequently, in January 2016, a Chinese manufacturer, Haier, bid for the purchase of
General Electric Appliances, finalizing the contract on June 6, 2016 (Thompson, 2016).
Whirlpool Corporation is the largest global manufacturer of home appliances (Innovation at the Pace
of Life, 2016). Although, Whirlpool is globally the largest manufacturer, they do not dominate all
markets as they do in North America. In North America, Whirlpool's strength lies in a strong and
vast brand portfolio, consisting of seven brands (Fettig, 2016). In 2006, the United States
Department of Justice approved the acquisition of Maytag Corporation by Whirlpool (Henriques,
2006). The acquisition served a two–fold purpose, seating Whirlpool in the number one market
share position in North America and adding strong brands such as Maytag, Jenn–Air, and Amana to
the portfolio. A series of acquisitions is accelerating growth for Whirlpool and ensuring global
market leadership. Whirlpool acquired Italian manufacturer,

The Case Household Appliance And Perfumes
The typical decision making process and that well–structured with the five processes is based on a
special purposeful search by the customer. Once the problem has been recognized, customers need
to acquire adequate information to resolve it. Information search is the process by customer surveys

role in the customers search process such as Facebook, Twitter, blogs, the goal however is not
regarding the technical aspect of the product but getting someone else opinion in the product

buy, pre–programmed decisions are usually given priority because the traditional consumer
decision–making process is not opportunistic but is driven by the perceptions and desire. The
strategies of the research process are made primarily on the characteristics features and category of

classification derive from different product attributes, price and previously learned connections. The

Energy : The Use Of Energy In Everyday Life
What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work, it is the "power that comes from the use of
physical or chemical resources." In your home energy can come in many forms such as heat, light,
and even electricity. The problem is some of us, meaning people, in general, know little to anything
about the word energy itself. When we think about energy, we think about the energy it takes to get
up in the morning. Sometimes as students we do not notice how much, and when we use energy. We
use energy in everyday life, and it is very important to understand that.
In my household, our energy sources consist of natural gas and electricity. The Hot Water Heater
that we use to heat our water, is generated by natural gas. Natural gas is a type of energy that comes
from deep beneath the earth's surface. Along with heating our water, it helps with washing clothes in
our washing machine and even helps dry those clothes. We also have a dishwasher that makes use of
both hot water and electricity. My mother stated that "She enjoys having a Natural gas water heater
because it helps with saving money". Generally Natural gas is cheaper than electricity when
working with water. At some point in being an adult, you have to consider the cost of things and
even the benefits that come along with it. That is what my parents did because it has been almost
four to five years living in our household and our Hot water heater has not gone out once.
On the other hand, in my household, we use the source of

Abstract:
Time operated electrical appliance controlling system is a reliable circuit that takes over the task of
switch on/off the electrical devices with respect to time. This project replaces the Manual Switching.
Most used devices at home are electrical light, electric fan, air conditioner. Operator may not be at
home and may be somewhere in a different place and if the necessity arises to control these home
appliances there must be some source to control and monitor the home appliances. It has an Inbuilt
Clock which tracks over the Time. When this time equals to the programmed time, then the
corresponding device is switched ON. The switching time can be edited at any Time using the
keypad. The Clock is displayed on LCD display.
Introduction:
The main objective of this work is to design and construct a micro computer based system to control
electric appliances such as light, fan, heater, washing machine, motor, TV, etc. The most important
problems
faced are the misusage of electricity and its wastage. Sometimes due to carelessness of the persons
lamps or fans are left ON which results in wastage of electricity. The project helps to overcome all
these problems. Microcontroller is used to supervise the actions of all other devices and to control

industry which includes the Major Appliances (refrigerators, cookers, dishwashers, washing
machines & dryers), Small Appliances (Vacuum cleaners, iron, & accessories) and Home Comfort
products (air conditioners, water heaters). Home appliances industry competes on the basis of: 
Cost structure that impacts the ability to compete on price.  Product features that can provide a
competitive advantage, through innovation &  Brand names recognition as a strong basis in the
consumer–driven appliance market. Kahn (2015) states that over the last five years the Industry
revenue increased 5.5%, reaching $191.3 billion in 2015, expecting an annualized 3.8% grow over
the next five years, representing industry revenue of $230.3 billion in 2020. As it is illustrated in
figure 1, the industry consists in five major players that account for about 39% of industry market
share in a low level of concentration industry that varies between market segment and by region,
experiencing consolidation mainly due to company efforts to build economies of scale and scope,
with significant merger activity (Kahn 2015). To increase profit margins, home appliance
manufacturers are aiming to build sales volume especially in emerging markets, increasing
productivity and moving production to regions with lower–cost labour; and/or through the

The Technology Of The Home Appliance Market
The ThermoWave is the newest advancement in the home appliance market, a device with the
capabilities to both heat food and beverages as well as cool them. Comparable in design to a
common countertop microwave, the ThermoWave has dimensions of 18"x30"x20" for our
household version. The ThermoWave comes in a stainless steel finish and is operated through a
traditional touch control numerical pad. Controls on the device allow for heating, cooling,
defrosting, thawing, as well as options for specific items such as poultry, beef, and popcorn. Our
company has chosen to market this appliance in department stores, discount retailers, and online.
The ThermoWave is priced at $159.99, which we feel is a fair market price for the devices
capabilities and production costs. Environmental forces that affect our product and company
include: competitive, technological, legal/regulatory, economic, and sociocultural. The
environmental forces are important because they are the influences behind the market and consumer
buying. Lower unemployment and inflation coupled with the current state of recovery that our
country is in are all positive forces for our company, while lower spending on appliances is a
concern for us. Our competition includes companies such as General Electric, Whirlpool, and
Samsung, all titans of the appliance industry. Though currently the ThermoWave is the only product
of its kind, we are expecting companies to emulate our product in the near future. Social media and

Gregg's Appliances Case Study
Case Study 1–6
Introduction This issue for case study 1–6 is brought to us by Steve Nelson and the company of the
Gregg's Appliances, Inc. The HH Gregg Company was founded on April 15, 1955 in Indianapolis by
Henry Harold Gregg and his wife. The initial store was an 800 square feet appliance showroom and
office. Since then the company has expanded and with that expansion the company needed more and
more information technology in order to harness the power of the information they had acquired.
But in 2006 the current CIO, Steve Nelson, was facing a deadline. The deadline was the HP, which
was Gregg's principal information technology vendor, has chosen to discontinue support for its line
of HP 300 mainframe processors. Gregg's relied ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The bonuses to this choice would be lower costs compared to Delphi and Sentra, Gregg's could
maintain current business processes and there is limited training required. But the Texas Firm UNIX
platform does not move Gregg's to an industry standard and it requires significant development staff
time. The other UNIX choice was from Ex–ADI costing $4–$5 million. The process for this change
would be to hire programmers and re–write into a UNIX platform internally. The biggest benefit to
this selection was that it allows for phase–in implementation, which means no business will be
stopped. It is also much cheaper than Delphi and Sentra options. The software will also be high
adaptable and customizable and limited training will be required. But this will not move the
company to an "industry standard" and nothing will seem new. There are several big risks when
changing important software in a large company. It could lead to a sudden halt of the business
during the deployment because of a failed database, a bad internet connection or the inability of staff
to input or process orders. The system might not be able to handle the work load. Lastly, there could
be an unexpected complete system shutdown. There are also other costs to consider. Along with the
implementation and annual maintenance costs outlined in the summary, Nelson Must also consider
other costs including: * Training costs * Testing costs * Costs of lost

Star Appliances B
Star Appliance Company B
Executive Brief This proposal accounts for the new debt and equity mix of Star Appliances by
estimating the company's cost of equity. The methods used include the dividend discount model, the
earnings/price model, and the CAPM model. After analyzing all three possibilities, it is apparent that
the CAPM model provides the most accurate estimate of Star Company's cost of capital because it
accounts for the beta. Using the CAPM model, the new Star Company cost of equity is calculated as
9.4% and the WACC is determined to be 9.14% at the 9.5% debt rate. In addition to the estimation
of the cost of equity, Star Appliance Company is also considering increasing their current debt ratio
of 9.5% to the industry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To calculate the new cost of equity for Star, the risk–free rate is added to the product of the beta and
the risk–premium. Star's new cost of equity is 9.4% (Appendix A). Given that the cost of equity is
9.4% and the cost of debt is 12.2%, Star's cost of capital can be calculated as 9.14% (Appendix B).
The company was also considering raising the cost of debt to the industry average of 19%. At this
cost of debt, Star Company would have a lower cost of capital of 8.24% (Appendix B) because
interest on debt capital is deductible whereas dividend payments on equity capital are not. At the
new WACC of 19%, the home appliance and agricultural machinery projects are valued based on
their inherent levels of risk. The beta of the industry average home appliance project is 0.95,
whereas the beta for the industry average agricultural machine project is calculated as 0.88. CAPM
was then employed to find the cost of capital of each project. The cost of capital for the home
appliance and agricultural machinery projects were found to be 10.4% and 9.92%, respectively
(Appendix B). This analysis allows Star Company to allocate funds to projects that create returns
greater than the industry cost of capital for each specific project. The IRR of the home appliance
project is 11.29% and the IRR of the agricultural machinery project is 10.70%, which are both
greater than the calculated cost of capitals. Therefore, in

Sleep Apnea Appliances
Types of Sleep Apnea Appliances
Sleep apnea, which involves breathing that's interrupted during sleep, is a severe sleep disorder that
affects 22 million Americans. Breathing can be interrupted as much as hundreds of time, which
causes the brain, as well as other areas of the body, to not receive enough oxygen. One way to treat
this sleep disorder is by using CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy. This entails
using a machine that delivers air pressure through a mask that's been placed over a person's nose
while sleeping.
But many people find the CPAP therapy too bulky and don't feel comfortable wearing a mask to bed.
Fortunately, there are sleep apnea appliances that can be used effectively in keeping the upper

A mandibular advancement device, which is the most common one used for treating OSA
(obstructive sleep apnea), resembles a mouth guard used by athletes. This dental appliance works by
pushing the lower jaw (mandible) forward so that a user's airway is opened.
It fits over the lower and upper dental arches and has hinges that ease the lower jaw forward. As a
result, the soft palate and tongue are stabilized. Using a MAD also helps to strengthen the airway as
it makes the tongue muscle more active, as well other airway muscles.
Tongue Retaining Device
A TRD is similar to a MAD as they both hold the tongue forward. However, unlike a MAD that
moves a user's jaw forward, a TRD pulls a user's tongue forward. In other words, a TRD has direct
control over the tongue.
Some people have less therapeutic side effects wearing a TRD than using a MAD. But, on a
negative note, TRDs not as comfortable as MADs. What's more, it takes a longer time to get used to
wearing a TRD. Considerations and Warnings
Failing to treat sleep apnea can result in failing to perform well at school or work. It can even be
fatal if you stop breathing long enough or fall asleep while

California–Los Angeles and Stanford were connected and communicating (Internet History from
ARAPNET to Broadband, 2007) . Thus was the birth of the internet. Now, the internet is an
indispensable tool that provides us with an active connection to everyone and nearly everything.
However, we've evolved the internet and moved forward to the "internet of things" (IoT). The IoT is
connecting man to machine, machine to machine, and machine to man all through "smart" devices,

Also of note are the new wearable devices. Today, instead of pulling out our wallet to pay for
groceries, we can simply scan our Apple Watch in front of an Apple Pay terminal and have the funds
immediately deducted from our account. When arriving at the airport, your connected device can
sense your current location and immediately let your bank know you are preparing for a trip. As you
drive, your connected vehicle can download real–time traffic and make suggested route changes
before you get stuck in traffic. More importantly, many modern vehicles are equipped with sensors
that can detect a collision and immediately dispatch help. The connected world has far exceeded our
expectations. One area of concern that revolves around the IoT is cyber security. Throughout the
2016 presidential primaries, cyber security has become an increasingly hot topic. During the January
17th, 2016 Democratic Primary Debate, cyber security was discussed no less than six times
(Leatherby, 2016). As the IoT continues to expand, hackers have expanded their attacks as well. In
July of 2015, hackers were able to remotely take control of the systems onboard a Jeep Cherokee
and completely disable the vehicle (Kerner, 2015). Unfortunately, this is not an isolated event. Both

The Marketing Strategy Of Whirlpool Corporation
In the United States, the cooking industry is a mature market with high penetration, therefore,
replacement product is significantly important to the industry. The United States has three major
manufacturers for domestic production; Whirlpool, General Electric, and Electrolux. The appliance
industry is changing and become more competitive with the influence of Asian competitors,
specifically, LG and Samsung is importing appliances into the United States. Subsequently, in
January 2016, a Chinese manufacturer, Haier, bid for the purchase of General Electric Appliances,
finalizing the contract, Monday, June 6, 2016 (Thompson, 2016).
Whirlpool Corporation is the largest global manufacturer of home appliances (Innovation at the Pace
of Life, 2016). Although, Whirlpool is globally the largest manufacturer, they do not dominate all
markets, as they do in North America.
Whirlpool acquired manufacturer, Indesit, in Italy, which has

Household Appliances In The 1920's
In the 1920s, also known as the Roaring Twenties, many new household appliances came out to
American consumers. One of them was the electric powered washing machine that clean clothes in
an efficient and easy way. This product, the Thor, was a drum like washer with a tub and a electric
motor and was created by Alva J. Fisher in 1908 (Bellis). Also,a vacuum cleaner is an electric tool
used to suction up dust and small objects on floors. This tool was created by Hubert Cecil Booth and
David T. Kenney in 1901 by using air for the separation of dirt (Green). Another appliance, the
electric refrigerator, is a tool that keeps your food and drinks cold and fresh. The refrigerator was
invented by Fred W. Wolf in 1913 and was a icebox with a refrigeration unit connected to the top
(Chapman). All of these appliances made the twenties roar because it made labor easier around the

This was because it made work much more easier. Such as, before the vacuum cleaner housewives
cleaned carpets with bread and lemon juice ("The History of Floor & Carpet Cleaning")! Also, the
Household Appliances made it easier to complete tasks in bulk. Such as, The Thor could hold a load
up to 19 pounds! This is much better than using a washboard. All of these factors made Americans
want the new household appliances. In The Great Gatsby, By F. Scott Fitzgerald, household
appliances were presented in the book. Gatsby was throwing a party at his house. To prepare for the
party, he orders five crates of oranges and lemon every Friday from a fruiterer in New York. He has
a machine that could juice 200 oranges in thirty minutes (Fitzgerald 39). This machine that Gatsby
used was called the Magic Maid Mixer with a juicer

Solar Power Appliances
Introduction
Founded in 1987 by a professor of electrical engineering at the University of Stanford, the
SunPower Company has lived to beat adversities and emerged as a formidable force to reckon with
in the provision of solar energy in the past few decades. Markedly, Dr. Richard Swanson acted on a
market gap and spearheaded the company's establishment from a research and development
corporation to a fully–fledged production firm that produces and sells solar panels globally. Owing
to worldwide warming and climate change, there have been entrants in the same line of business that
compete with SunPower. As a result, a reduction in the company's market share occurred over the
past decades.
In its initial life stages, SunPower signed two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, it registered a maximum of 600 MW solar cells in the year 2010 alone.
Despite its marked development, the SunPower Company still experiences aggressive competition
from larger solar cells producers in the world. Since solar energy is a permanent solution to concerns
on climate change, there have been scores of entrants into the same line of business. For instance,
the company faces stiff competition from the Asian and Middle East countries. Some of its main
competitors include Sharp Solar, who is the chief competitor, Q–cells, REC Cells, First cells, and
Sun Tech among others.

Products & Appliances : Equipment And Appliances Have Been...
4.1 Products & appliances: Equipments and appliances have been targeted by the most common
measure of labelling and MEPS which is one of the cost effective way to penetrate more and more
energy efficient appliances in the market. Despite lot of efforts there is still lot of potential in the
existing building sector to make it more energy efficient and sustainable buildings. IPCC estimates
that, by 2022, carbon–di–oxide emission from using energy efficient products and appliances in the
buildings can help to reduce by 29% at no major cost (Levine, M., D. Ürge–Vorsatz, K. Blok, L.

package of policies i.e. mandatory public procurement to improve the efficiency of this sector which
requires strong leadership and demonstration by the government (Kelly 2012) . The mandatory
procurement program need to be aligned with the MEPS as wells star rating programs to ensure the

Persuasive Speech On Dishwashers
Dishwashers have two prominent advantages for us which are saving our works and saving energy.
It's a matter of wonder that some people are still using dishwashing machines that were bought five
years ago or a decade ago because the newest devices are way better with its efficiency, cleaning
performance and quietness of operation. Many more features have been evolved a lot since last ten
years. With cheaper and older washing machines, you had to pre–rinse your dishes. But now here
we present you 5 most useful and money worth dish washer in 2016 with the best brands.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST DISHWASHER?
CONVENIENCE
The most important thing while choosing the best dishwasher is the ease of its use. For the top
dishwashers, it means convenient loading.
CAPACITY
If you are about to buy a built–in dishwasher, the proper consideration is a standard 24 inches
model. This one is a good option for twelve to fourteen place settings. There you also have 18
inches built–in dishwashers, but they are better for a small kitchen of a small family who will use
dishwashing machines seldom. Countertop portable dishwasher is great for small families and
couples, because it supports 4–6 place settings
MULTIPLE CYCLES
You need to consider such a washing machine that allows you to adjust racks having many
silverware slots and fold–down tines. A dishwasher with multiple cycles is that's why recommended.
The ideal dishwasher is that adapts to the food it has to be cleaned and the type of the dishes

Quoted in the Harvard Business Review
In 1989, Whirlpool Corporation (Whirlpool) embarked on an ambitious global expansion with the
objective of becoming the world market leader in home appliances. Beginning with the purchase of
a majority stake in an appliance company owned by Philips, the Dutch electronics firm, Whirlpool

With limited growth opportunities and a handful of major players in the United States, it was critical
that firms focus on cost reduction, productive efficiency, and product quality. Product innovation
was also critical, although few major innovations had occurred in recent years. The apppliance firms
segmented their products according to different consumers' needs, and each strived to achieve
greater economies of scale. Still, by the end of the 1990s, the competitive landscape remained
unattractive. Profit margins continued to decline for most firms. Many analysts believed that the
market for appliances was saturated and that there would be little increase in growth rates. This
saturation had left the distributors focusing primarily on replacement purchases and purchases for
new housing developments.

Star Appliance
Star Appliance Case Study
Situation:
Star Appliance is looking to expand their product line and is considering three different projects:
dishwashers, garbage disposals, and trash compactors. We want to determine which project would
be worth doing by determining if they will add value to Star. Thus, the project(s) that will add the
most value to Star Appliance will be worth pursuing. The current hurdle rate of 10% should be re–
evaluated by finding the weighted average cost of capital (WACC). Then by forecasting the cash
flows of each project and discounting them by the WACC to find the net present value, or by solving
for the internal rate of return, we should be able to see which projects Star should undertake.
Conclusion:
Which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Star's returns were found by multiplying the EPS times the P/E ratio to get the year's stock price. I
then found the change in the price each year, which is the capital gain yield (CGY). Adding this, the
CGY, to the dividend yield (also listed in exhibit 6) gave Star's returns. The results of the regression
were a best fit line with a slope of 0.831, which equals beta. Using exhibit 5, I averaged the 10 and
20 year T–bill rates to get "Rf" for 15 years of 10.7%. I used the given 6.0% percent as the market
premium. Putting all of these values into the CAPM equation gave a return on equity of 15.69%.
Optimal Capital Structure
WACC = (D/D+E)(Rd)(1–t) + (E/D+E)(Re) Even though Star originally has a debt–free capital
structure, there is an optimal capital structure that includes debt, which is usually a cheaper source
of financing. To find the weighted average cost of capital, I first calculated the cost of debt using the
spread between bond debt ratings (what was the spread?). I added the spread to the risk free rate of
10.7% used earlier as "Rd", then multiplied this value by (1–tax rate) to find the cost of debt. Next, I
had to find a beta for the levered Star by using the equation BL=BU(1+(1–t)(D/E)). I determined the
debt/equity ratio by solving (D/D+E) =((D/D+E)–1)^–1. Now I used the CAPM again to solve for
Re of the levered firm for different proportions of debt. Finally, the WACC was found by
multiplying the cost of

Marketing Plan For The Whirlpool Corporation

Benton Harbor, Michigan. Whirlpool manufacturers home appliances including Kitchen–Aid,

global world leader in home appliances manufacture.
Growth strategies
1. Internal growth – This is growth from within the corporation using internal resources. This would
include focusing on new products or a new marketing plan. (Chand 2016)

b. Horizontal related diversification is when a company adds products that are unrelated to its
current offerings. Whirlpool purchased Kitchen Aid in 1986, which manufactured stand mixers,
among other products. This was not something Whirlpool was familiar with but using the celebrity
chef popularity at the time, promoted Kitchen Aid heavily and markedly increased their customer
base. (History & Heritage)
c. Conglomerate unrelated diversification is growth strategy that involves adding new products or
services that are significantly different from the organization 's present products or services. This
happens when the company diversifies into an area that is completely dissimilar to the current line
of business. Whirlpool currently offers licensing upon approval to any products. Products they
license now include water softeners, water coolers, upright vacuums and outdoor grills. These
products, when sold with the Whirlpool name behind them, increases brand name awareness as well
as loyal customers. (Brand Licensing 2016)

Case 1: Appliance maker
The challenge
Senior executives at a large, low–cost manufacturer of appliances and white goods were concerned
about the sluggish performance of the company's household fan business. It had long been among
the top leading players in the company's home country–an emerging market–but was now losing
domestic share in two important, and fiercely competitive, product categories.
The company's leaders suspected that a stagnant product portfolio was partly to blame; they had
been focusing a considerable amount of attention on operations and had neglected to revisit fan
designs for a couple of years. Meanwhile, an innovative upstart, also from an emerging market, had
begun competing with the manufacturer, both at home ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet the teardown showed that as compared with competitors, the company was "overbuilding" its
products significantly and that identical–or even better–product performance was possible at a lower
cost if the team was willing to rethink its design approaches.
Some of the resulting design changes were quite straightforward and even, in retrospect, obvious.
Yet the team acknowledged that the new ideas didn't click until the teardown, when the evidence
was spread out on the table for discussion. By modifying the cover of one type of household fan, for
example, the team made it unnecessary to include an internal bracket assembly that had supported
the original cover–a savings of 7 percent per unit. This change, like most cost–saving opportunities
the team identified, was invisible to customers and didn't matter to them (for an example of one
model, see diagram).
Many of the individual cost–saving opportunities the team identified were small. But the collective
impact was huge–helping the company to reduce the total cost of manufacturing its fans by more
than 10 percent, against a cost base that was already quite competitive. Meanwhile, consumers
received the new designs well, and that contributed to a 50 percent jump in operating profit in the
first year of their introduction and helped elevate the company to the number two spot in the market
(up from number three) over that time span.

Biomedical Appliances And The Destruction They Bring
Biomedical Appliances and the Destruction They Bring In the ever–growing industry of biomedical
sciences, many devices have the potential to cause harm to the environment. They have to be treated
with such caution and have drastic disposal measures in place to make sure no damage is done to the
environment. Yes, these steps are incredibly important with devices such as these, but why use a
product with such devastating potential? With today's modern technology and brilliant scientists
should put more effort into creating more environmentally friendly biomedical technology whilst
still having the same benefits. The world today is ever changing and technology is progressively
advancing each and every day. Laura Cabrera wrote an article in which she discusses the effect
humans have on the environment and how the environment affects them. The goal of the article is to
discover how biomedical science can be further developed by understanding the environmental
impact of humans. "Technological advancements have yielded positive economic growth, improved
standards of living, and provided new ways of protecting human health. At the same time,
technology has contributed to widespread negative changes in the environment that include global
climate change, deforestation, suburban sprawl, ecosystem loss, and increased health risks from
exposure to radiation, toxicants, and stress (Cabrera 1)." Whereas this technology can be lifesaving
and a great benefit to a modern health, it can

With the sweeping globalization movement of the 1990's, Maytag has attempted to establish a presence as a global competitor in the appliance industry. As the company has tried to establish itself in the developing global marketplace, it has had difficulties. Not only were consumers taste and preferences changing in the domestic market, but the company needed to develop products that would appeal to the new global markets. Porter's five forces are used to determine the competitive intensity and attractiveness of a market. These are close forces that affect a company's ability to make a profit and serve customers. If any of these forces change, a company must reassess its marketplace. The five forces include: the threat of substitute products, the threat of the entry of new competitors, the intensity of competitive rivalry, the bargaining power of customers and the bargaining power of suppliers. Porter's five forces can be used to analyze Maytag. First, the threat of substitute products is low. The only substitute for a washing machine is a large sink and a great deal of manual labor. Many of the appliances have substitutes, but because those substitutes are so old and outdated there is not a threat from them. Second, the threat of entry of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In your home energy can come in many forms such as heat, light, and even electricity. The problem is some of us, meaning people, in general, know little to anything about the word energy itself. When we think about energy, we think about the energy it takes to get up in the morning. Sometimes as students we do not notice how much, and when we use energy. We use energy in everyday life, and it is very important to understand that. In my household, our energy sources consist of natural gas and electricity. The Hot Water Heater that we use to heat our water, is generated by natural gas. Natural gas is a type of energy that comes from deep beneath the earth's surface. Along with heating our water, it helps with washing clothes in our washing machine and even helps dry those clothes. We also have a dishwasher that makes use of both hot water and electricity. My mother stated that "She enjoys having a Natural gas water heater because it helps with saving money". Generally Natural gas is cheaper than electricity when working with water. At some point in being an adult, you have to consider the cost of things and even the benefits that come along with it. Comparable in design to a common countertop microwave, the ThermoWave has dimensions of 18"x30"x20" for our household version. The ThermoWave comes in a stainless steel finish and is operated through a traditional touch control numerical pad. Controls on the device allow for heating, cooling, defrosting, thawing, as well as options for specific items such as poultry, beef, and popcorn. Our company has chosen to market this appliance in department stores, discount retailers, and online. The ThermoWave is priced at $159.99, which we feel is a fair market price for the devices capabilities and production costs. Environmental forces that affect our product and company include: competitive, technological, legal/regulatory, economic, and sociocultural. The environmental forces are important because they are the influences behind the market and consumer buying. Lower unemployment and inflation coupled with the current state of recovery that our country is in are all positive forces for our company, while lower spending on appliances is a concern for us. The HH Gregg Company was founded on April 15, 1955 in Indianapolis by Henry Harold Gregg and his wife. The initial store was an 800 square feet appliance showroom and office. Since then the company has expanded and with that expansion the company needed more and more information technology in order to harness the power of the information they had acquired. But in 2006 the current CIO, Steve Nelson, was facing a deadline. The deadline was the HP, which was Gregg's principal information technology vendor, has chosen to discontinue support for its line of HP 300 mainframe processors. Gregg's relied ... The bonuses to this choice would be lower costs compared to Delphi and Sentra, Gregg's could maintain current business processes and there is limited training required. But the Texas Firm UNIX platform does not move Gregg's to an industry standard and it requires significant development staff time. The other UNIX choice was from Ex–ADI costing $4–$5 million. The process for this change would be to hire programmers and re–write into a UNIX platform internally. The biggest benefit to this selection was that it allows for phase–in implementation, which means no business will be stopped. It is also much cheaper than Delphi and Sentra options. The software will also be high adaptable and customizable and limited training will be required. But this will not move the company to an "industry standard" and nothing will seem new. There are several big risks when changing important software in a large company. It could lead to a sudden halt of the business during the deployment because of a failed database, a bad internet connection or the inability of staff to input or process orders. The system might not be able to handle the work load. Lastly, there could be an unexpected complete system shutdown. There are also other costs to consider. • 34. Star Appliances B Star Appliance Company B Executive Brief This proposal accounts for the new debt and equity mix of Star Appliances by estimating the company's cost of equity. The methods used include the dividend discount model, the earnings/price model, and the CAPM model. After analyzing all three possibilities, it is apparent that the CAPM model provides the most accurate estimate of Star Company's cost of capital because it accounts for the beta. Using the CAPM model, the new Star Company cost of equity is calculated as 9.4% and the WACC is determined to be 9.14% at the 9.5% debt rate. In addition to the estimation of the cost of equity, Star Appliance Company is also considering increasing their current debt ratio of 9.5% to the industry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To calculate the new cost of equity for Star, the risk–free rate is added to the product of the beta and the risk–premium. Star's new cost of equity is 9.4% (Appendix A). Given that the cost of equity is 9.4% and the cost of debt is 12.2%, Star's cost of capital can be calculated as 9.14% (Appendix B). The company was also considering raising the cost of debt to the industry average of 19%. At this cost of debt, Star Company would have a lower cost of capital of 8.24% (Appendix B) because interest on debt capital is deductible whereas dividend payments on equity capital are not. At the new WACC of 19%, the home appliance and agricultural machinery projects are valued based on their inherent levels of risk. The beta of the industry average home appliance project is 0.95, whereas the beta for the industry average agricultural machine project is calculated as 0.88. CAPM was then employed to find the cost of capital of each project. The cost of capital for the home appliance and agricultural machinery projects were found to be 10.4% and 9.92%, respectively (Appendix B). This analysis allows Star Company to allocate funds to projects that create returns greater than the industry cost of capital for each specific project. The IRR of the home appliance project is 11.29% and the IRR of the agricultural machinery project is 10.70%, which are both greater than the calculated cost of capitals. Therefore, in ... David Whitman, Whirlpool CEO, 1994 Quoted in the Harvard Business Review In 1989, Whirlpool Corporation (Whirlpool) embarked on an ambitious global expansion with the objective of becoming the world market leader in home appliances. Beginning with the purchase of a majority stake in an appliance company owned by Philips, the Dutch electronics firm, Whirlpool purchased a majority stake in an Indian firm, established four joint ventures in China, and made significant new investments in its Latin America operations. The four main players–Whirlpool, General Electric, Maytag, and White Consolidated, which had been acquired by Electrolux–were beating one another up everyday.4 With limited growth opportunities and a handful of major players in the United States, it was critical that firms focus on cost reduction, productive efficiency, and product quality. Product innovation was also critical, although few major innovations had occurred in recent years. The apppliance firms segmented their products according to different consumers' needs, and each strived to achieve greater economies of scale. Still, by the end of the 1990s, the competitive landscape remained unattractive. Profit margins continued to decline for most firms. Many analysts believed that the market for appliances was saturated and that there would be little increase in growth rates. This saturation had left the distributors focusing primarily on replacement purchases and purchases for new housing developments. • 73. Star Appliance Star Appliance Case Study Situation: Star Appliance is looking to expand their product line and is considering three different projects: dishwashers, garbage disposals, and trash compactors. We want to determine which project would be worth doing by determining if they will add value to Star. Thus, the project(s) that will add the most value to Star Appliance will be worth pursuing. The current hurdle rate of 10% should be re– evaluated by finding the weighted average cost of capital (WACC). Then by forecasting the cash flows of each project and discounting them by the WACC to find the net present value, or by solving for the internal rate of return, we should be able to see which projects Star should undertake. Conclusion: Which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Star's returns were found by multiplying the EPS times the P/E ratio to get the year's stock price. I then found the change in the price each year, which is the capital gain yield (CGY). Adding this, the CGY, to the dividend yield (also listed in exhibit 6) gave Star's returns. The results of the regression were a best fit line with a slope of 0.831, which equals beta. Using exhibit 5, I averaged the 10 and 20 year T–bill rates to get "Rf" for 15 years of 10.7%. I used the given 6.0% percent as the market premium. Putting all of these values into the CAPM equation gave a return on equity of 15.69%. Optimal Capital Structure WACC = (D/D+E)(Rd)(1–t) + (E/D+E)(Re) Even though Star originally has a debt–free capital structure, there is an optimal capital structure that includes debt, which is usually a cheaper source of financing. To find the weighted average cost of capital, I first calculated the cost of debt using the spread between bond debt ratings (what was the spread?). I added the spread to the risk free rate of 10.7% used earlier as "Rd", then multiplied this value by (1–tax rate) to find the cost of debt. Next, I had to find a beta for the levered Star by using the equation BL=BU(1+(1–t)(D/E)). I determined the debt/equity ratio by solving (D/D+E) =((D/D+E)–1)^–1. Now I used the CAPM again to solve for Re of the levered firm for different proportions of debt. Finally, the WACC was found by multiplying the cost of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Appliance Maker the Challenge Case 1: Appliance maker The challenge Senior executives at a large, low–cost manufacturer of appliances and white goods were concerned about the sluggish performance of the company's household fan business. It had long been among the top leading players in the company's home country–an emerging market–but was now losing domestic share in two important, and fiercely competitive, product categories. The company's leaders suspected that a stagnant product portfolio was partly to blame; they had been focusing a considerable amount of attention on operations and had neglected to revisit fan designs for a couple of years. Meanwhile, an innovative upstart, also from an emerging market, had begun competing with the manufacturer, both at home ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet the teardown showed that as compared with competitors, the company was "overbuilding" its products significantly and that identical–or even better–product performance was possible at a lower cost if the team was willing to rethink its design approaches. Some of the resulting design changes were quite straightforward and even, in retrospect, obvious. Yet the team acknowledged that the new ideas didn't click until the teardown, when the evidence was spread out on the table for discussion. By modifying the cover of one type of household fan, for example, the team made it unnecessary to include an internal bracket assembly that had supported the original cover–a savings of 7 percent per unit. This change, like most cost–saving opportunities the team identified, was invisible to customers and didn't matter to them (for an example of one model, see diagram). Many of the individual cost–saving opportunities the team identified were small. But the collective impact was huge–helping the company to reduce the total cost of manufacturing its fans by more than 10 percent, against a cost base that was already quite competitive. Meanwhile, consumers received the new designs well, and that contributed to a 50 percent jump in operating profit in the first year of their introduction and helped elevate the company to the number two spot in the market (up from number three) over that time span. Biomedical Appliances And The Destruction They Bring Biomedical Appliances and the Destruction They Bring In the ever–growing industry of biomedical sciences, many devices have the potential to cause harm to the environment. They have to be treated with such caution and have drastic disposal measures in place to make sure no damage is done to the environment. Yes, these steps are incredibly important with devices such as these, but why use a product with such devastating potential? With today's modern technology and brilliant scientists should put more effort into creating more environmentally friendly biomedical technology whilst still having the same benefits. The world today is ever changing and technology is progressively advancing each and every day. Laura Cabrera wrote an article in which she discusses the effect humans have on the environment and how the environment affects them. The goal of the article is to discover how biomedical science can be further developed by understanding the environmental impact of humans. "Technological advancements have yielded positive economic growth, improved standards of living, and provided new ways of protecting human health. At the same time, technology has contributed to widespread negative changes in the environment that include global climate change, deforestation, suburban sprawl, ecosystem loss, and increased health risks from exposure to radiation, toxicants, and stress (Cabrera 1)."
