Bhubneshwar is the capital city of State of Orissa. It lies in the
eastern part of the country. The city has a long historical
background attached to it. As there are more than 600 temples in
the city, it is often known as 'Temple City' of India. The city of
Bhubneshwar is the economic and cultural representative of the
State.
History of the city
A capital city once flourished on the outskirts of the present city,
Sisupalgarh, about 2000 years back. Innumerable temples were
made in the region during the ancient and medieval periods. The
planning and architecture of the modern city of Bhubneshwar was
done by one German Architect, Otto. H. Koeingsberges. In 1948,
the capital city of the state of Orissa was changed to
Bhubaneshwar from Cuttak.
Best time to visit
Bhubneshwar lies in the Eastern Coast of the State of Orissa. The
average elevation of the city is about 45 meters above the sea level.
A major river Mahanadi flows through the north eastern outskirts
of the city. The average temperature of the city is about 40 degrees
in summers while 10 degrees in winters. The monsoon enters the
city in June and leaves in October. Therefore, the best time to visit
the city is somewhere between October to February, which
experiences good temperature as well as a humid climate.
Cultural importance of the city
The city is known as the city of temples and therefore, it will not
be wrong to say that the main cultural stream of the city is
Hinduism and Buddhism. Many temples that are built in the city
have been built in or around the 1st and 2nd century AD. This
alone evidence shows that the city acted as a major religious hub.
In today's scenario, the city is expanding with fast pace in the

in the city. There are many tourist places in Bhubneshwar worth
viewing. There is a hill about 8 kms drive from the city, this hill
can prove to be wonderful for a nature loving person. The Orissa
State Museum is for the people who love preserved documents and
historical facts. There is a Zoo for a perfect entertainment of the
family. The Museum for the Tribal arts and artefacts is also located
in the city premises and can be visited for having a look at the
tribal history of the city.
