eastern part of the country. The city has a long historical
background attached to it. As there are more than 600 temples in

Bhubneshwar is the economic and cultural representative of the
State.

History of the city
A capital city once flourished on the outskirts of the present city,
Sisupalgarh, about 2000 years back. Innumerable temples were
made in the region during the ancient and medieval periods. The
planning and architecture of the modern city of Bhubneshwar was
done by one German Architect, Otto. H. Koeingsberges. In 1948,
the capital city of the state of Orissa was changed to
Bhubaneshwar from Cuttak.

average elevation of the city is about 45 meters above the sea level.

city in June and leaves in October. Therefore, the best time to visit
the city is somewhere between October to February, which
experiences good temperature as well as a humid climate.

Cultural importance of the city
The city is known as the city of temples and therefore, it will not
be wrong to say that the main cultural stream of the city is
Hinduism and Buddhism. Many temples that are built in the city
have been built in or around the 1st and 2nd century AD. This
alone evidence shows that the city acted as a major religious hub.
In today's scenario, the city is expanding with fast pace in the
fields of information technology, biotechnology and small scale
industries and therefore, attracting people from all of the state and
all of the religion.
