Discipleship Journey
Discipleship is the hard work that every Christian has to do in everyday life. Discipleship
is all about faith. If we have faith then we will start to follow what we believed. It means
learning from the one who we believe and start to follow the teacher.
I assessed and asked two seminary students about their Discipleship journey and I
wrote the response in the following main points.
The primary purpose of the church is to evangelize the unreached people and train
others to do evangelism again. Church is the place where Christians are equipped and
empowered to do the mission what Jesus Christ has given.
One of the respondents was the fruit of the revival movement that was taken place after
the downfall of the communist regime. In that movement Christians were eager to share
what they had and were bold enough to speak the truth in front of the “enemy” - Dergue.
During that time individuals were important and helpful in providing the riches what
Jesus Christ has put in their life. They pray together, share the Gospel to all who met
and study the Word of God by being three and more. This helped them to have a
fellowship in order to care for each other. The greatest number that made to have
strengthened is twelve. The twelve members have to start an outreach in order to win
others for Jesus Christ. They have the responsibility to start small church in that they
are accountable to study, pray and share the good news of Jesus Christ. Most of the
discipleship currently he uses is nothing except in the church. The resource that are
using is to proceed the church programs and disciple others.
This responsibility made them to be seen by the church leaders and appointed to be in
discipleship training. The training center was called “one for Christ” and took course for
one month and sent to their district. After six months the disciples were called again at
the discipleship training center to report and see what effect has brought in their field
work. During those month’s participants of the first class were responsible for 150
conversions and 25 baptized. Most of the new believers were again disciple to go in a
new place.
It was easy to see God working in transforming many brothers and sisters in his own
town that gave their life to Jesus Christ. The real issue that he was tracing back was
“how” God was at work in those times. He compared the then times and the present by
seeing the participation in ministry. He emphasized that God is always inviting people
to work with him.
The second person saw his life and feels the burning fire in his soul that made him to
have zeal for Jesus Christ. His heart felt need was to follow Jesus Christ and this made
him to be a disciple of Jesus. This person saw his weakness to be limited only in prayer

and mediating on Bible reading. He lost the fellowship of believers to share what they
had in common. He has not passed in formal discipleship training centers. One of the
reasons for being isolated is working among Muslim dominant area. The pressure that
came from the Muslim leaders was harsh on him even though he works hired by
government agent teacher. As he was known in being Christian among them, he was
expelled from among them. He tried to force them using his responsibility. After three
years work among them God brought impact on his students that he found believers of
Jesus Christ. The growth was slow and takes many years.
In every story of the above persons, I can see that God is able to make disciple among
difficult situations and showed his favor to the next generations in bringing up new
discipleship training centers. God have his own peculiarities in doing strange things in
the life of persons. What I have observed from the interview is that God is guiding them
to the best his kingdom expansions.
The problem of my interviewee is having lack of making disciple making. The reason is
that their personal life is not willing to do discipleship. They are busier to transform
their economic situations.
The biggest challenges they face in making discipleship are having a problem in finding
role model in their face. The people are not willing to be disciple in the congregations.
The teachers themselves are not true disciple for Jesus Christ. The major issue is they
are not having power of Holy Spirit and there are many criticizing each other. The
church has no best method and strategies to do discipleship in the church. They have
not Bible training centers. The church has to do mission oriented vision.
God is discipling his faithful servants to be like him and they transform the people
around them. What a wonderful God is I am worshiping. He likes to multiply his
servants in unknowingly.
