We at George Mason University’s Catholic
Campus Ministry (CCM) selected as this
year’s theme “building a strong foundation,”
taken from Luke 6:47-49. Our student
leaders have worked tremendously hard to
build a strong Christian foundation for
Mason’s college students, leading weekly
Thursday Night Suppers (TNSs),
advertising and running the annual CCM
luau (attended by a record 1500
students!), and conducting on-campus
outreach events. Our weekly TNSs have
featured speakers like Fr. Leo Patalinghug, a
professional cook who beat Bobby Flay on
The Food Network, and Sr. Clare Hunter, a
Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist, who
leads the Arlington Diocese’s pro-life
ministry. “Abundant Life in Christ” (John
10:10) was the theme of our New Student
Beach Retreat, which 58 students attended.
We missionaries and everyone at Mason’s
CCM are working hard to provide fun
events that bring many people together
and cultivate the interior spiritual life of
the students, introducing them to Jesus
Christ and His family, the Church.

We FOCUS missionaries live by a motto:
“To know Christ Jesus and to fulfill His
Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) by
first living, and then communicating, the
fullness of life within the family of God, the
Church.” In other words, we must first be
faithful Christians before we can inspire and
encourage others to know Jesus, too.
Here at George Mason University, we have
34 student leaders who make this motto a
reality. Above, some of these student
leaders – Tomás, Frankie, Connor & Kara –
speak with freshmen at the CCM luau. One
of these freshmen, Cory (in the Hawaiian
shirt), is now in a FOCUS-led Bible study.
Seen above are those student leaders in my
“discipleship tree”: Brendan (to my right) is
leading his first Bible study;Tomás (to my
left) is starting a new mentoring program,
“Bellarmine Kids,” for middle schoolers in
Fairfax,VA; and Frankie (to his left) is also
starting a Bible study and leading outreach
to the local juvenile detention center.
Student leaders designed our black and
yellow Catholic Patriots shirts. Seen wearing
last year’s shirts are the students who
attended the Beach Retreat held inVirginia
Beach in September.

“CCM IS A VERY SUPPORTIVE
FAMILY. MISSIONARIES ARE LIKE
OLDER BROTHERS AND SISTERS
WHO HAVE GONE THROUGH IT
ALL BEFORE AND ARE FRIENDS
YOU CAN TURN TOWARD TO SEEK
GUIDANCE ... IT’S NICE TO
SURROUND YOURSELF WITH
PEOPLE WHO ARE STRIVING TO
BE MORE LIKE CHRIST AND
SEEING THE JOY THEY GET FROM
DOING THAT.”
