Recruiting of Ethical Candidates for Ritz-Carlton
RES/351

Running head: REQRUITING OF ETHICAL CANDIDATES
FOR RITZ-CARLTON

REQRUITING OF ETHICAL CANDIDATES FOR RITZ-
CARLTON
5. 2
Recruiting of Ethical Candidates for Ritz-Carlton
The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company is the only service company
in America that has won the Malcolm Baldridge National
Quality Award twice, and Training Magazine has called it the
best company in the nation for employee training (Reiss, 2014).
The Ritz Carlton brand does not take its recruitment process
lightly and is extremely selective in who do they extend the
Employee Promise to they value so profoundly. The high
expectation from employees and the current economic climates
leaves the newest addition of the brand, The Ritz-Carlton
Rancho Mirage struggling to find the right candidates. The Ritz
Carlton typically hires about 2% of the people who apply for
jobs with them and often apply an untraditional method of
attracting talent (Reiss, 2014).
Key Business Objectives
At the Ritz-Carlton there is a high level of pride, integrity and
ethics amongst the current employee’s that must be upheld
within the company and passed down to new employees. Some
the principal business objectives through this exploratory study
is to determine what information is needed to select the right
candidates who possess the personal qualities and ethical
characteristics that Ritz Carlton is looking for. “In exploratory
research, the qualitative data that focus groups produce may be
used for enriching all levels of research questions and
hypotheses and comparing the effectiveness of design options”
(Cooper & Schindler, 2014). By selecting the design of a focus
group involving the Ladies and Gentlemen already hired by the
company, our secondary objective of determining where to find
that information will be fulfilled. The last objective is to
determine what methodology the team is going to use in its
approach and what research questions will the questionnaire
6. entail. The organization places an enormous value on the
thoughts and opinions of the existing employee’s and believes
this research will provide the company with the qualitative data
that we need to recommend a management solution.
Research Questions
The research questions that we would like the focus group to
answer are as follows; describe the values and work ethics that
you feel are important in coworkers. What could the Ritz-
Carton and current employees do to portray their rich ethical
culture? Would knowing what the Ritz-Carlton’s ethical
standards were weigh in your decision to take a position if you
were a potential new employee? Is the Ritz-Carlton’s
compensation and benefit package average or above average?
Would seeing the compensation and benefit package weigh in
your decision to take a position if you were a potential new
employee? Do you know anyone that fits the Ritz-Carlton image
that would be a good fit for one of the positions that we have?
Do you believe our Employee Promise and Credo should be a
deciding factor to employees to choose us over other
companies? The research questions that we decided upon will
give us the qualitative data that we need to determine how to
attract and retain top notch employees.
Hypotheses and variables
In research a hypothesis (a) guides the direction of the
study, (b) identifies facts that are relevant, and (c) suggests a
research design. Our research design will be built on the
following hypothesis:
• Hypothesis (1): The recommended Ladies and Gentlemen
will have similar characteristics to the already selected Ladies
and Gentlemen.
• Hypothesis (2): By involving our current Ladies and
Gentlemen in the hiring process, employees will feel more
engaged and responsible not only fostering but also passing on
organizational pride to the new hires.
Variables that need to be considered within the focus group
members are personal opinions of ethics and qualities of a good
7. candidate, personality traits, past experiences, bias to friends
and relatives, and or bias to the Ritz-Carlton.
Ethical Considerations
One of the fundamental requirements of conducting this
research is that we will do so in the utmost ethical manner by
ensuring that all of our participants are safe and suffer no
adverse consequences. During the focus group, we will explain
the study in detail, outlining the benefits of the study. We will
also explain their rights and responsibilities and ensure that
they clearly know participation is voluntary. In addition, we
will guard privileged information of the employees and contact
information of the referred individuals and not utilize them for
any other reason in order to protect the privacy and
confidentiality of all individuals involved. After the focus
group is debriefed, we will obtain their consent and ask for
permission to begin. Once we begin our research, we will
evaluate data from an unbiased perspective, and we won’t
change or omit any of the data collected so that our results are
true. When any signs of discrepancy or bias may arise, we will
have more than one researcher discuss the discrepancy to agree
upon on an answer. When the information is gathered, and
research is complete, we will prepare our report and submit to
management for review.
Purpose of the research
The main purpose of the proposed research is to find a viable
solution for one of the specific management’s dilemma the Ritz
Carlton Rancho Mirage is facing at the moment. Consequently,
the emphasis of the research will be in gathering relevant data
(personal contact information of potential employees) that will
result in setting up interview processes with the outcome of
finding new hires for the 60 jobs currently open at the Ritz
Carlton Rancho Mirage. The selected research design not only
will satisfy the purpose of the conducted research but will also
spike organizational pride within the already employed Ladies
and Gentlemen. This element is especially vital in fostering
more engaged, proud and loyal employees, who will further
8. cultivate the already existing ethical reputation of the Ritz
Carlton Brand. It is our hope that this approach will capture
quality Ladies and Gentlemen who are ready to embrace the
unique culture and the motto of the Ritz Carlton: “Ladies &
Gentlemen Serving Ladies & Gentlemen”.

Discuss whether your business problem could primarily be
solved using a qualitative or quantitative research design and
9. also discuss the benefits of using a both designs in your
research. - (Team C's business research will primarily be
solved by using qualitative data that we obtain from the focus
group.)
Write a 200 to 250 word paper that addresses the following
questions:
Question:
How can you most effectively use the power of both designs?
(some good information concerning this in chapter 7) attached.
· Chapter 7 - The case study, also referred to as the case
history, is a powerful research methodology that combines
individual and (sometimes) group interviews with record
analysis and observation. Researchers extract information from
company brochures, annual reports, sales receipts, and
newspaper and magazine articles, along with direct observation
(usually done in the participant's "natural" setting), and
combine it with interview data from participants. The objective
is to obtain multiple perspectives of a single organization,
situation, event, or process at a point in time or over a period of
time. Case study methodology--or the written report from such a
research project, often called a case analysis or case write-up --
can be used to understand particular processes

Research Question Two Variable Handout
The research question (RQ) is developed from the business
problem. Each variable is operationally defined so that reliable
measurements may be taken. This DQ represents a managerial
problem statement that needs to be put into a form that can be
tested.
10. The independent and dependent variables are identified. The
variables may be attribute (non-numeric) or numerical. More
commonly, the dependent variable is the one that is numeric and
measured. When there are two numeric variables, the IV
generally precedes the DV.
Below are three cases.
Case 1: DV Numeric, IV Attribute
A manager asks why the productivity is different based on three
daily shifts. To test this statement, we may first want to validate
the observation. A hypothesis test will be decisive as to whether
the productivity is different because of normal variation (by
chance alone,) or whether there is statistical significance.
Productivity is abstract, so it is operationalized to be measure
cases of product per hour.
A RQ may be as such:
RQ: Is there a difference in productivity (DV) based on the
production shift (IV)?
Variables are productivity, numeric data, and shift, attribute
data.
The hypothesis statements are the next step.
Ho: There is no difference in productivity (DV) based on the
production shift (IV).
H1: There is a difference in productivity (DV) based on the
production shift (IV).
Notice the alternate hypothesis, H1, is nearly identical to the
RQ. Then notice the relationship between
H1 and Ho.
Case 2: DV Numeric, IV Numeric
11. A manager asks why a product’s profitability is inconsistent
with sales.
Profitability is abstract, so it is operationalized to be measure
Gross Profit (= Sales Revenue - Cost of
Goods Sold)
A RQ may be as such:
RQ: Is there a correlation in product profitability (DV) based on
product sales (IV)?
Variables are profitability, numeric, and sales, numeric data.
The hypothesis statements are the next step.
Ho: There is no correlation in product profitability (DV) based
on product sales (IV).
H1: There is a correlation in product profitability (DV) based
on product sales (IV).
Case 3: DV Attribute, IV Attribute
A HR manager believes employees on the back shift are less
satisfied than those on the day shift.
Satisfied is abstract, so it is operationalized to be Very Satisfied
– Satisfied – In Different – Dissatisfied –Very Dissatisfied.
Satisfaction has been operationalized by using a validate survey
questionnaire.
A RQ may be as such:
RQ: Is there a relationship between employee satisfaction (DV)
and specific shift (IV)?
Variables are satisfaction, attribute, and shift, attribute data.
The hypothesis statements are the next step.
Ho: There is no relationship between employee satisfaction
(DV) and specific shift (IV).
12. H1: There is a relationship between employee satisfaction (DV)
and specific shift (IV).
