Introduction
This essay aims to answer the question "can psychology satisfactorily explain sexual violence?"
However, as this is such a broad area of research, it will be focussing on domestic sexual violence,
including intimate partner violence (IPV) and child sexual abuse within the family.
The reasoning behind focussing on domestic sexual violence is that despite the media's portrayal of
sexual violence being most commonly committed outside of the home, for example, campaigns
depicting 'stranger danger' to children (Newiss, 2014). However, statistics from the Crime Survey for
England and Wales show that an intimate partner committed 46% of serious sexual assault against
females aged 16–59 (Home Office, 2014), whilst research by Smallbone and Wortley (2001) found

On October 24 2000, a news article headline read, "Gang wars 6 Dead". This event had taken place
in Etobicoke, and the news article contained sentences like "Six victims in six months" and
"calculated executions". It also contained terms like "Bloods" and "Crips". These terms and
sentences have officially crossed the border and have become all too familiar in Canadian cities.
In order to cut back this outlaw behaviour, we need to educate our youth about the ill effects of
gangs, drugs, guns, and should try to persuade them to instead make friends with those who accept
you for who you are and use all their time in doing something positive and proactive. As a result of
reducing and preventing gang violence, many cities have created special task forces and given
schools their own police officers.

North eastern women who come to Delhi to work or for academic pursuits encounter cruel and
uncouth behaviour from uncivilised people of Delhi. They are racially discriminated because of
their distinctive features and sexually abused because of their vulnerability. This study focuses on
discussing the sexual harassment and sexual violence that the north eastern women have been facing
in Delhi, causes that are responsible for such happening and various aspects related to this issue.
The study was initially planned on a sample of 100 north eastern women residing in Delhi, however
the researcher could contact only 92 women. A questionnaire was administered to them individually
contacting them through snowball method. The results showed that, 96% women had faced sexual
harassment in Delhi, between sexual racial and cultural discrimination 64% of women reported that
they face sexual harassment followed by 35% who reported racial discrimination and 1% who
reported cultural discrimination. 42% women had faced eve teasing, 18% faced stalking, 20% faced
physical touches, 14% had faced sexual violence, 3% got sexual calls and messages and 3% reported
that they had faced all types of harassment , when asked whether men harassing them were educated
or uneducated 87% said that both the educated and the uneducated men indulge in such sexual

Being able to talk on it should make it feel easier to overcome but, in my experience I've never felt

I choose this topic because sexual assault is one of the most offensive crimes committed in our
society. Not only is it a threat to the community, but it has a physically and psychologically effect on
the victim in many ways. For the last couple of decades, sexual assault, rape, and child molestation
has become the focal point of public concerns today. According to a 1993 NationalCrime
