Listening for Understanding
Listening is an important form of communication. Unfortunately, many people who do not know
how to listen believe they can listen well. They often say "I have been doing this all of my life of
course I can listen". Listening is not inherited, or a personality trait, it is a skill that must be worked
on and practiced.
Anybody can become a good listener if they are committed to learn how and are willing to work
hard. The first mistake that people tend to make when listening is to not make any type of
comments while listening. They tend to just stand there and listen while the speaker talks. This can

Try to listen to what the speaker is trying to say and not to what is making you angry. Summarize
the main points of what the speaker was saying so that the focus is on the speaker and not you. It
is always important to try and listen objectively no matter what the speaker is trying to say. By
doing this, you will become a better listener and more able to communicate with others concerning
subjects that might normally make you angry to the point that you would no longer be able to carry
on a working conversation with that individual. This will make you especially valuable in the
management industry where, as a rule, people will come to you with problems that need to be
resolved.
It is important to listen carefully and to withhold personal judgement. This is especially true when the
subject matter or the position taken by the speaker is making you angry. In this circumstance, your
interjections, if not thoroughly thought through, may just make the person defensive. Problems can
also arise if you are too nice and give a lot of positive comments. People like it when they are being
praised. This can alter what the speaker is saying. If you continue to give positive comments the
speaker will continue to want more of them from you. If you want to find out what the speaker is
really thinking you need to listen and withhold evaluation.

The methodological strength and weaknesses of this two sampling methods is discussed in terms of
identifying the samples for research, the representativeness it possesses to the general population, the
methods and the outcome. Stratified random sampling is a probability sampling where the selection
of sampling unit is left to a random process, all units in the sample has an equal and non–zero
chance of being selected on a probability ground or chance and not on the choice or judgement of
the researcher (Sim,J and Wright,C. 2000,). Convenience sampling is an example of non probability
sampling where the selection of the units is not by chance, rather it is dependent on the researcher's
judgement, the researcher decides the samples to be included in the study which may be subject to
availability, time, individual preferences etc. The probability of selection of a particular sampling
unit may or may not be known. Stratified random sampling is commonly done in quantitative
researches. When the samples reflect the characteristics of the target population in the same
proportion; assumptions can be made on generalizing the data acquired from these samples provided

This relates to the way that I interpreted Harmony because humans just want to be understood so
that people from different cultures can live in the same setting without destroying one another. One
way in which society can live together is by practicing cultural barrowing, which is when an
individual or a group of individuals show appreciation for a culture that is not their own. Secondly,
from the article titled the good as Harmony, the author, Sidney Zink states "The term seems to
serve partly in an effort to develop a substitute for the traditional ethics of value" (1). I certainly
agree with Zink's statement, because Harmony can also be looked as traditional ethics, if an
individual wants to live in peace, he must ignore all the negatives that surround him that interfere
with their lifestyle. The term Harmony has gradually changed its meaning throughout the years, the
article titled The Good as Harmony states "Plato and Aristotle conceived the harmonious relations
to secure a certain relation among the various parts of human nature or the state, whereas the
modern writer speaks in terms of interest and values" (Zink 1). In the past, Confucius explained

Wow now this stage of my life which made me who I am today, it had the most life changing
experiences up to this date, secondary school. My very first secondary school was Salisbury, it was
said that it was one of the worst performing schools in the country and also one of the worst
behaved. I did not know this and didn't believe it because I and most of my friends had achieved
very good grades in our SATS. I had achieved level five in English, five in science and four in

More importantly, I would like to suggest that universities exist to contribute to the creation of a just
society by producing graduates who improve social life. The presence in society of a corps of
competent graduates is a powerful force for improvement. Lawyers can advance the cause of formal
justice, while doctors promote health. Teachers prepare the next generation, while scientists make
discoveries that reverberate throughout the world.
University education can also exert important indirect effects. Universities offer counselling, art
exhibitions, music and drama performances, consultation on public and private issues, medical,
scientific and social research and many other public services. Students learn the importance of public
service from their universityвЂџs example. Through interaction with academics and their own peers,
students learn about freedom of expression, tolerance and responsible citizenship.
