2. General Information
~ All magnets exert a magnetic force
~ This happens through a magnetic field
~ Magnetic fields surround all magnets
~ Magnetic field lines start at the north pole and
end on the south pole
~ Magnetic field lines are stronger when the field
lines are close to each other
~ If magnetic field lines curve towards each
other, they are showing attraction
~ Magnets have a north pole and a south pole
3. Magnets Move Currents
~ Electric appliances produce motion
~ Electric energy transforms into kinetic
energy
~ Current-carrying wires have an magnetic
field
~ Same magnetic field as a magnetic field
of a magnet
~ Current-carrying wires attract each other
like two magnets
4. Motors
~ A motor is any device that
converts electric energy into
kinetic energy
~ To keep it running, the current-
carrying wire changes into a
loop
~ Happens so the magnetic field
can force the wire to spin
5. Aurora
~ Appears when sun ejects many particles at once
~ Most of the particles are deflected by the magnetosphere of
the Earth
~ However some of these particles from the sun produce other
charged particles in Earth’s outer atmosphere
~ The charged particles then spiral along Earth’s magnetic
field lines toward it’s magnetic poles
~ They collide with atoms in the atmosphere
~ This causes the atoms to emit light
