Matt and Emma from Keele University showed how they have reached the dizzy heights of being awesome with Adapt. As they walked through their guide, they showed how the chapters of making friends, traveling abroad, finding the true you, deep thoughts and farewells each have contributed to their Adapt success.

Editor's Notes
I’m Emma Holdham and this is my colleague Matthew West. We both work at Keele University in the Learning and Professional Development Centre. Keele University is the largest based single-campus University in Europe with over 160 acres including lakes and parkland. We have on average just under 10,000 UK based students and hundreds(?) based internationally.
We employ approximately 1600 staff across 13 schools and are world leaders in areas such as astrophysics, malaria and gerontology.
Welcome to our Guide to being awesome with Adapt. When we were first discussing the title of our presentation and the word ‘awesome’ was used we were a little unsure, as it isn’t really a term that is associated with academia, however, with both Matt and I being a fan of Lego we went with it!
Move to Slide 2 (For those of you who have seen the Lego Movie, this will make sense)
Emma – 1 minute
So we are going to spend the next 14.5 minutes talking to you about our awesome adventure with Learning Pool and more recently adapt. We aim to provide you with a range of fun tips and awesome advice that will either stimulate your thinking or project you into action.
Prior to 2013, the majority of staff development offered by the LPDC was delivered through face to face sessions. In May 2013, a decision was taken to diversify and Keele commenced a 2 year contract with Learning Pool to provide a Moodle based learning platform with the sole purpose of providing online staff development courses and briefing statements for staff across Keele.
Move to Slide 3
Facts for me
As at March 2015, Keele’s Learning Pool contains 43 live courses, available to Keele staff
15 courses have been developed “in-house” by Keele SME’s.
7 generic courses have been adapted for use at Keele by SME’s from core materials developed by Learning Pool.
19 courses / course content have been sourced from Microsoft for Keele use.
In addition to those courses created by Keele staff / for Keele staff, an additional 2 generic ‘off-the-shelf’ courses available from Learning Pool have also been made available for use by staff.
918 individual staff members have signed up to Learning Pool, generating a total of 1853 enrolments across the 43 courses.
Of these, 740 staff have completed 1206 courses. 647 have not completed courses for which they are enrolled. Where a course is mandatory, staff have 100% completion (“Recruitment and Selection” and “Equality and Diversity (Pharmacy)”).

So today we will be spending a short time looking at the following areas which we feel capture the chapters of our journey using both Learning Pool and our progression to the Adapt Authoring tool.
We will explore:
Making Friends – our current stakeholders in Learning Pool
Traveling Abroad – our new stakeholders
Deep Thoughts – Review of Learning Pool to identify way forward
Finding the True you – All about our new brand using adapt
Farewell - kick-starter ideas for activities and things to do to successfully implement Learning Pool and adapt.

The opening Chapter of our story is all about “Making Friends”
1.Our Users – are everyone at Keele,… From Professors… to Academics… to the Cleaning and Porting staff.
“We are a diverse community which contains staff from across the world.”
2. Out of our User community come our Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), many are “learned” and “expert” but they do not know how to train staff.
3. We are accountable to Senior Managers… they have messages to give and strategies to deliver, they want to see a return on their investment.
Finally we have…
4. Professional Support… These include Keele and Learning Pool staff…
In this book…. The Learning Pool Support Desk are the “Toy Shop” which delivers the Adapt Tool to us.
The Learning Pool staff support us to deliver to our users every day.

Chapter 2 – Traveling Abroad
At Keele we have a Huge Institutional driver… To raise the profile of Keele and To increase our student numbers and bring more money into the University.
This is pushed by the fact that there are not enough 18 year olds to fill all the places available Nationally in the next 5 years.
So, Keele has made links with International Overseas Partners.
We have China(Environmental Sciences and Psychology), Malaysia(Business) and Greece (Physiotherapy).
THE NEED…
Most notably the staff who deliver Keele courses abroad are from those Home nations and many will have never been to the UK let alone to Keele.
Most are not native English speakers!... But they are delivering Keele courses or elements of courses in English… so we have a NEED to deliver staff training and information at a distance. The key is point for us is that the content written in a different way from previous offerings from Keele.
THE PUSH…
is to deliver courses which assure us of the staffs base knowledge, and understanding, about the UK method of teaching and assessment.
THE BONUS…
Is the awareness raising that is taking place across Keele.
THE DOWNSIDE…
The downside is that only our courses which will be traveling abroad, we are firmly fixed in Staffordshire!

This slide is about lessons learnt!!!
Prior to us starting our work with our international partners we carried out a comprehensive review of Learning Pool which allowed us to take stock of our current engagement with Learning Pool. We carried out Focus Groups with users, a wider user questionnaire, 1:1 meetings with strategic key players. When collated this report provided us with ways in which we could improve our Learning Pool offering going forward to increase user engagement and improve the user experience.
Just some of the thoughts and finding are shown below:
Location and Access
It was noted that first-time users of the system often found locating the access to the learning platform difficult given where Learning Pool it sited within the LPDC Website. Those users who had been provided with a web-link as part of the Induction process (for example, the course on DSE Assessment) found that this strategy resolved this particular issue.
Time to undertake learning
Whilst staff noted that they are given time to attend formal face to face training, a concern was raised that the same allowance may not always be given to online-learning. Participants suggested that drop-in sessions in the LPDC may be of benefit to allow staff to undertake an on-line course within an allocated time-slot with assistance on hand. This finding also highlights the need to ensure that there is clarity between staff groups as to the expectations regarding staff development / training.
Additional courses and sections
Workshop participants also suggested that the introduction of additional sections such as ‘Learning and Teaching’, ‘University Systems’ and ‘Keele Induction’ would (i) encourage use of the system and (ii) provide clearer signposting for current and new staff as to what training they were expected to undertake as part of their role, especially in those areas of the university where the induction process for new staff was not always clear.
Marketing/Information for Staff about Learning Pool
Reflecting on their own experiences, participants felt that there was an urgent need to raise awareness of Learning Pool across the University community, especially given the importance of many of the courses. A number of staff had accessed Learning Pool as part of their Induction process and had not returned to the Learning Platform post-induction to explore the new/additional courses available. A small number of those present had seen the new section in the weekly LPDC Newsletter but felt that more could be done to improve awareness of the system and the courses on offer.
Always think positively
Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life – from a builder point of view if I really love the tool that I’m using to produce a range of development activities, it doesn’t feel like work. You aren’t thinking about the tool, you are concentrating on the message…goes back to the analogy of the tail wagging the dog. Allows us to work closely with the SME rather than feels like just working with the tool.
People need to learn to be more friendly
You cant control everything
Anything is possible!

This slide is about some great kick-starter ideas for activities and things to do to succesfully implement Learning Pool and adapt.
These are just some of the things that we have done since May this year…..
Design your own theme and brand for adapt
Host your own party! – We held a t-party
Make friends – we went along to our campus services yearly event to hightlight CPD and on-line learning
Write your awesome adventure – we have a range of brochures now which fit with our brand but also highlight the various courses available.
