Librarians in Second Life

  2. 2. Info Island is a location in Second Life where one can find many librarians and library resources available for education and research needs.
  3. 3. Info Island offers a teleport board that allows one to choose what subject area they would like to learn more about.
  4. 4. So, if one clicks, or “touches” astronomy…
  5. 5. the avatar is then teleported to a place to learn more about astronomy.
  6. 6. There is a reference desk where individuals volunteer to work and help people locate information.
  7. 7. The Cybrary City Public Library is a virtual public library that offers many resources to Second Life users.
  8. 8. Cybrary City Public Library offers internet subject guides on many different topics. If an individual chooses Science and Technology…
  9. 9. They are taken to a website with many different online resources on science and technology.
  10. 10. The Cybrary City Public Library also links to ebooks that are no longer covered by copyright and are therefore free to download in their entirety thanks to
  11. 11. The State Library of Kansas has a virtual branch online with many useful resources.
  12. 12. The lobby of the Kansas State Library offers Kansas Images, links to the state library catalog, and their homepage.
  13. 13. As shown in the picture above, the state library also offers a ton of useful state of Kansas information. One would simply “touch” the signs on the wall to be taken to this information.
  14. 14. Many universities have campuses and libraries in Second Life. The University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science has set up a great example of a university library online.
  15. 15. They have a circulation desk.
  16. 16. They offer a virtual reference desk.
  17. 17. USC also offers links to many of the university resources as well as state, and national resources for informaiton.
  18. 18. One can even visit Disney World in Second Life.
  19. 19. Second Life even allows travelers to get free souvenirs and take photos of their virtual vacation.
