Analysis of song lyrics
1. Analysis of song
lyrics
Seeing that this song is a remix, there aren’t that many lyrics to go off of. However, there
is a running theme through the song, and Goldlink’s album as a whole. Although the
theme and narrative is clearly laid out for us, no matter what song we use, we wont be
drawing on the theme to create a narrative for our video, as the music videos we as a
team have enjoyed the most have been on the whole, completely disjointed from the
narrative of the lyrics.
2. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I admit it, I admit it
Yeah, you're not the only woman in my phone, yeah
I be up late chattin', interactin', straight mackin'
With all these other people, I'm sorry
The main theme of the song is a couple being unfaithful to each other,
but, unlike countless other songs about being unfaithful, ‘Late Night’
normalises it almost, which is an interesting review on society as a whole,
where young and old people don’t hold much to being faithful, and
playing or sleeping around and having side chicks’ is a normalised thing.
3. Especially up 'round 2, or 3, or 4
Especially up 'round 2, or 3, or 4
Got me askin' for round 2, or 3, or 4
Baby I don't know what to do, for me, for more
Midnight lovin'
Midnight lovin'
Midnight lovin'
Midnight lovin'
The song, and the album in general, has a running theme of sex,
something that is common to the hip-hop and rap genre, but as
Goldlink’s music doesn’t really fit into one genre or another, there
is more freedom almost, to say and sing about what you want at
the time.
4. I admit it, I admit it
You're not the only woman in my phone
I'll be up late chattin', interacting
Wit' all bad ass bitches and these other people
Oh, I'm sorry
Drivin' in Oakland girl
Forgot the night before
Stayed at the Westin Inn
Looked in those tempting eyes
And you're all on my mind
Confident in your skin
Me, my boys and your friends
Yeah we had a good time
I hope to see you
The last part of the song talks about the night that they just
had, albeit briefly, but how much of an impression the girl
has made on him. However, it seems that this infatuation
was fleeting, as the last line simply says ‘I hope to se you’,
something which someone would say to an acquaintance,
perhaps, or someone you don’t know very well. In any cae,
the idea is that Goldlink doesn’t know this girl very well and
he doesn’t care.
