Editor's Notes
On January 25, 2011, a tornado ripped down my street in Groveland FL.
The storm left more than a dozen uprroted trees and destroyed the roofs and yards of several homes.
No one was injured, but many of the homes were condemned, and families were left with no place to live.
Already shaken from the storm, my 2- year old daughter and I were left standing outside in the rain with no food, no clothes, and no roof over our heads.
Imagine yourself in this situation. Do you know what you would do? Where you would go?
Thousands of families find themselves in this situation each year. Natural disasters render people homeless with nowhere to turn.
On the night of the storm in my neighborhood, volunteers from the American Red Cross met us at a nearby church. They provided hotels room for all the families affected for a week. They also provided money to purchase food and clothing. There were several children that were very shaken up and they did their best to comfort the kids with stuffed animals and toys. I don’t know what I would have done if the Red Cross was not there to help my family.
The American Red Cross is a non profit organization that is committed to helping victims of disasters. It is made up of primarily volunteers that respond to emergency situations like mine.
