FILM ANALYSIS By: Macie Monday, Payton
Bonnett, & Lane Stuart
THESIS STATEMENT:
 The ethics of artificial
intelligence are illustrated
throughout the movie
“iRobot”.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Definition (according to Merriam-
Webster) :
 An Area of Computer Science that
Deals with giving Machines the Ability to
seem like they have Human Intelligence
 The Power of a Machine to Copy
Intelligent Human Behavior
PROS OF A.I.
 Often times more Precise and/or Accurate
 Can perform more Dangerous Tasks (Safety)
 A person somewhere will definitely Benefit
Financially (no employee pay needed)
 Machines require No Breaks which leads to Higher
Work Efficacy
 No Emotional barriers/boundaries
CONS OF A.I.
 Requires Maintenance, Upkeep, and Repair
 No Critical Thinking/Judgment of Actions (thinking before acting)
 Human Job Loss (unemployment raised)
 Loss of Information is possible
 No ability to make Personal Connections
 Higher Electricity/Maintenance Cost
EXAMPLES OF A.I.
 iRobot Roomba Vacuum Cleaner
 Siri (Apple iPhones)
 Drones
 Automatic Car Control
 GPS Systems
 J.A.R.V.I.S. (Iron Man)
 GERTY (Moon)

Definition of Ethics in Philosophy:
 Moral philosophy is the branch of philosophy
that systemizes, defends, and recommends
different types of concepts of right and wrong.
ETHICS
THEORIES OF ETHICS IN A.I.
 Deontology (Duty-Based Ethics)
- Theory by Immanuel Kant
- is the normative ethical position that judges the morality of an action based on the action's
adherence to a rule or rules.
 Consequentialism (Utilitarianism)
- Theory by John Stuart Mill
- is the class of normative ethical theories holding that the consequences of one's conduct are the
ultimate basis for any judgment about the rightness or wrongness of that conduct.
 Virtue Ethics
- Theory by Aristotle
- is an approach to Ethics that emphasizes an individual's character as the key element of ethical
thinking, rather than rules about the acts themselves or their consequences
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO HAVE A MIND?
 Theory one: The theory of mind that equated having a mind with
having an (immaterial) soul.
 Theory two: Two distinct types of “stuff” exsist. (finish this up on
page 100 in P&F book)
I.ROBOT- THE MOVIE
The Plot:
I, Robot is set in the year 2035, a time when robots have become commonplace
in the United States. Del Spooner is a homicide detective with the Chicago
police. He is summoned to what appears to be the scene of a suicide by a
prerecorded hologram made by the victim, Dr. Alfred Lanning. Right from the
start Del thinks that something is fishy; and assumes that this is actually a case
of homicide. His suspicion of robots leads him to infer that the killer must have
been the only animate thing in the room when the death took place: a robot
named Sonny. (pg. 99 Litch & Karofsky)
I.ROBOT- THE MOVIE
The Plot (cont.):
 Del and Susan Calvin, a scientist who has worked with Dr. Lanning, are
surprised to learn that Sonny is not like other robots: Sonny possesses free will
and repeatedly expresses human-like emotions and fears. Despite Del’s initial
suspicion, Sonny and Del bond to begin working together to find and stop the
real culprit responsible for Lanning’s death. In the meantime, a newer model of
robot has started a revolution to save human beings from themselves by taking
over the world. Now, Del, Calvin, and Sonny must not only find the truth behind
Lanning’s death, they must also save humankind from the robots they have
created.
I, Robot raises several issues at the intersection of philosophy and AI: Does
Sonny have a mind? Is Sonny a person, in the sense that harming or destroying
him would be morally wrong? Finally, is the robot revolution depicted in I,
Robot, as in so many other sci-fi thrillers involving robots, something that is a
