Note: I will place a note on the top of the notes page to explain a reason or a why it was done this way.Note: I animated the title slide but the following slides will advance with the click of the mouse. Action Buttons and hyperlinks are used on the menu (slide 2) for movement.Note: This presentation is general in format and I want to sell the idea and not create a situation where numbers (number of laptops or dollars needed) will be a hindrance. I will only reference what laptop computers will do for student learning. In this presentation, I will show that with the use of laptop computers; student learning will improve.
Note: Each point is linked to that section of the PowerPoint. At the end of each section will be a back button that will take you back to this slide (menu). If you want to continue without coming back to this slide, click the mouse. My four points for improved technology with the use of laptop computers.
Laptop computer use will improve writing scores through the use of drafts, edits and final copy. The rewriting simplified and increased the quality of the process. The student’s writing and the quality of writing will improve because of the ease of revisions. This then leads to increased academic achievement.
With the use of laptop computers, students are motivated to learn by showing more interest in learning, which made school work easier and yielded higher academic gains. This then increases academic achievement. If the student is motivated to learn, you add these three ingredients which all increase student learning and the outcome will be increased academic achievement.
Note: A higher percentage of laptop students attained A grades and a significantly lower percentage attained F grades in their English and mathematics courses. This table displays the percentage of students receiving each end-of-course grade for English and mathematics by grade level and by program enrollment.Table indicates that there is a substantial difference between laptop and non-laptop students in terms of their end-of-course grades.
Note: The arrow size is not significant, but the fact that all three will increase. With the use of laptop computers, there is more student participation, students work collaboratively and learning and instruction are improved.
These are the results from the 2008 America’s Digital Schools 2008, The Greaves Group, The Hayes Connection survey. The question was directed to the participants of districts using one-to-one computing.
Laptop computer allow students more interaction with peers, helpful for students with special needs, lower economic background and students with poor academic performance and the opportunity for every student to use technology. These three points will increase equity of access.
Students have the opportunity to gather information from multiple sources; that information then works to improve student learning. We are hoping that the information is up-to-date, increases student learning, creates new learning situations using real life issues and will result in improved reasoning and problem solving skills.By using laptop computers, the student will employ 21st century technological skills.
Note: The Back Button will take you back to the menu slide the Forward Button will take you to the final slide. This slide is a continuation of the previous slide and as a result of evaluating the information (from Internet) will create new learning skills. At the same time students are improving their learning; the teacher, by integrating technology with instruction will also improve their learning and improve their instruction. The student will be able to decide and place a value on the Internet information. As the student is learning the teacher will become more proficient by integrating technology with instruction.
Note: The funding for this technology or the number of laptop computers was not included in this presentation. I wanted my point of emphasis to be what laptop computers would do for our student learning. Funding is always a mood point and I did not want the board turned off before they heard what this technology could do for our students. I may have to settle for a mobile lab but even then our students gained technology that they didn’t have before. It is important that the stakeholders understand that this is a long-term commitment that needs the support of the educational system and the community.
