One in three persons in the world lives in poverty, according to Oxfam International. This
makes anti-poverty actions an urgent matter in a world fraught with steadily growing
populations, yawning gap between the rich and the poor, and increasing climate concerns
and challenges. Charitable organizations waging war against poverty have an integral role in
this battle.
Anti-poverty nonprofits remain a relevant force in today’s world, given the wide-ranging
facets of poverty that need to be tackled and solved. There are basic human rights that need
to be observed and protected in development programs in many countries, where local
communities need to claim rights for themselves. There’s also the need for human
development as driven by women and children, who should be spared from oppression and
be well represented on all fronts.

Anti-poverty nonprofits also work on the ground when disaster strikes. People naturally get
caught up in natural disasters as well as conflict, and the fight against poverty is inevitably
tied to the need for food, shelter, clean water, and sanitation in disaster-stricken areas. These
groups help mobilize the distribution of donations and even natural resources to be accessed
by the poor.

Charities and foundations, too, have a radical role to play in policy debates on a host of
poverty-related issues, from the minimum wage to upholding government programs for
families in need.
Challenges still exist, including seeking good partners, raising more funds, and fostering
better collaboration, but it’s undeniable that poverty eradication can only be put into motion
with the nonprofits doing what they do and working with governments and the private sector
to get things done.
