Jim Blackman Research Paper
In Jim's early life he was born in Logan County, Kentucky in April of 1796. When Jim was six years
old his family moved to Bayou Boeuf, Louisiana in 1802. In Louisiana, he developed the spirit of
adventure. His usual hobby was wrestling alligators and just exploring around the areas he lived by.
In 1812 he enlisted in the Louisiana militia after the start of the war in 1812 against the British but
he was too late to see any action. Soon he was back in the Louisiana selling timber. But with the
money that he earned he bought slaves. Jim later met Jean Lafitte, who was a gulf coast pirate who
was involved with illegal slave smuggling. Jim's brothers bought smuggled slaves and said that they

Two men, Samuel Levi Wells the III and Dr.Thomas Harris Maddox had agreed to a duel and each
one of them had brought men along. Bowie was with Wells. After both men missed both of their
shots they decided to end it with a brawl instead. Bowie still fought in spite of being shot three times
and stabbed with a sword–cane. Jim fought and killed one of his opponents with his famous Bowie
knife. Bowie took notice of Texas like everyone else did. Jim ended up buying land in San Antonio
and met is future wife, Ursula Veramendi a Tejano living in Texas. She was also the daughter of the
mayor of San Antonio. Jim and Ursula ended up having two kids together, a boy and a girl. Later, a
disease called cholera killed Jim's wife and her parents. When war against Mexico started to break
out and Jim Bowie and other people joined Stephen F. Austin and James Fannin's army and marched
into San Antonio and tried to end the conflict with Mexico quickly. They set up shop at a mission

The ad interim government of the new Republic of Texas and much of the civilian population fled
eastward ahead of the Mexican forces. The conflict arose after Antonio López de Santa Anna
abrogated the 1824 constitution of Mexico and established martial law in Coahuila y Tejas. The
Texians resisted and declared their independence. It was Sam Houston's responsibility, as the
appointed commander–in–chief of the Provisional Army of Texas (before such an army actually
existed), to recruit and train a military force to defend the population against troops led by Santa
Anna. Residents on the Gulf Coast and at San Antonio de Béxar began evacuating in January upon
learning of the Mexican army's troop movements into their area, an event that was ultimately
replayed across Texas. During early skirmishes, some Texian soldiers surrendered, believing that
they would become prisoners of war – but Santa Anna demanded their executions. The news of the
Battle of the Alamo and the Goliad massacre instilled fear in the population and resulted in the mass
exodus of the civilian population of Gonzales, where the opening battle of the Texian revolution had
begun and where, only days before the fall of the Alamo, they had sent a militia to reinforce the
defenders at the mission. The civilian refugees were accompanied by the newly forming provisional
army, as Houston bought time to train soldiers and create a military structure that could oppose
Santa Anna's greater forces.

San Antonio History
The Alamo is an 18th–century mission church in San Antonio, Texas It was originally built to be the
church for the Mission San Antonio de Valero began as a Catholic mission and compound in 1718,
one of many Catholic missions organized as part of the official Spanish plan to Christianize Native
Americans and colonize northern New Spain.
The first of five missions to built in what would become San Antonio, the mission was established
by Father Antonio de San Buenaventura y Olivares, of the College of Santa Cruz of Querétaroqv,
who first visited the region in 1709. In 1716 Olivares received approval from the Marqués de
Valero, the viceroy of New Spain (Mexico), for a plan to remove to San Antonio the dwindling

After a hurricane destroyed most of the existing buildings in 1724, the mission was re–established
on its present site on the east bank of the San Antonio River. Its earliest buildings were of temporary
construction, but, were replaced throughout the years with more permanent structures.
Work began on the stone convento, or priest's residence, by 1727. Replacing earlier adobe
structures, the two–story, arcaded stone building eventually included two wings along the west and
south edges of an inner courtyard, immediately north of the church. The convento, now known as
the long barracks, also served to house the friars, offices, kitchens, dining room, and guest rooms.
The construction of The Alamo began on May 8,1744. It was built with lots of blocks of limestone.
Originally, The Alamo was designed to have two bell towers and a domed roof, but was never really
completed. The date 1758 is carved in the keystone over the front doorway.
The architecture structure of The Alamo is 30ft tall in height and 60ft wide at the

The Alamo Battle Analysis
The purpose of this paper is to discuss an alternate ending to one of the greatest battles in Texas
history, the battle of the Alamo. This paper will show how using Intellectual standards and critical
seasoning can be used to conduct battle analysis as well as develop and alternate outcome to a
historical battle. The turning point in the fight for Texas' independence from Mexico was the fight at
the Alamo again Santa Ana. If Santa Ana would not have won that decisive victory over the Texas
militia at the Alamo, the fight for Independence from Mexico would have possibly taken longer to
rally the troops. Before the siege at the Alamo, Santa Ana used his understanding of the battlefield

That instant when the Alamo fell, intertwined Santa Ana's fate with the Alamo. (LSJunction, 1999)
What if Santa Ana did not strategically place forces around the Alamo and reinforcements had come
to aid the Alamo? The Alamo was never intended to be a defensive position by any means, but was
meant to be a mission. The Mission San Antonio De Valero, established in the early 18th century,
was situated along the San Antonio River. By 1800, the missionaries were displaced and their land
was seized for military purposes. Occupying soldiers called the Mission–turned–garrison El Alamo
after the cottonwood trees surrounding it. Eventually the mission was officially renamed The Alamo.
First Spanish soldiers, then Mexican soldiers occupied The Alamo. With only 200 Texan soldiers
defending the Alamo, Santa Ana lost 600 soldiers during the 13 day siege of the Alamo.
Reinforcements would have turned the tide in favor of the Texans. William B. Travis wrote a letter
to the people of Texas and all Americans. "I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans
under Santa Anna I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not
lost a man. The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be

The Battle Of The Alamo
Keren Lee Mr. Lewis AP US History 1 2 December 2014 The Battle of the Alamo The Battle of the
Alamo was a devastating battle between the Texan and Mexican Army that occurred in the midst of
the Texas Revolution and had an everlasting effect on the country and then state of Texas. The
Alamo wasn't built with the intention of being a fort. The Event– The Alamo In the early 1700s the
Spanish set up a mission in Texas to house local Native Americans and convert individuals to
Catholicism. The mission was founded by Antonio de San Buenaventura, and was called the San
Antonio de Valero Mission. The mission had three locations. The first was near San Pedro Creek,
the second was closer to where it is today and the third location of the mission is where the Alamo
stands today. Alamo expert, Melinda Tomerlin, of alamo.org says, "While this is the third spot for
Mission San Antonio de Valero, it is the only place the 'Alamo ' has ever been" (Tomerlin). In 1793
the Spanish government seized control of many missions, including the San Antonio de Valero
Mission. They wanted to secularize the missions, and in the 1800s Spanish troops were stationed in
the abandoned mission because of its key location. The mission then became a fort. The soldiers of
the fort nicknamed it "El Alamo" (meaning cottonwood) because the fort stood in an orchid of
cottonwood trees. After Mexico 's victory in the war for independence from Spain, Mexican soldiers
were stationed at the fort until after the

American frontiersmen, including some of their most brave leaders gather together to support a
solution against the enemy, and hold out against massive odds. Until the climactic moment when
they 're destroyed, taking large numbers of the enemy with them. Their sacrifice changes history.
And since then the Alamo has entered itself deeply into the American spirit and for reasons that have
nothing to do with aggressive pride, militarism, or passion with blood. No, it has to do with the fact
that we measure our experiences against the situations, not against average ones.
The location of the Alamo is, 300 Alamo Plaza, San Antonio, TX 78205.The Alamo began at the san
Antonio de Valero, a Spanish Mission, in the early 1700's, one of the first in Texas. The
establishments of the mission played a crucial role in the settlement of San Antonio, Texas and the
Southwest. The question has the Alamo always been at its present location "Mission San Antonio de
Valero" has not always been at this location. The original mission was founded near the headwaters
of San Pedro Creek in 1718. In 1719 the mission was relocated a short distance to the. A 1724 storm
destroyed structures at the new site, prompting Spanish officials to relocate the mission to its present
spot. It was the mission compound constructed here at the 1724 location that later gained fame as
the Alamo. While this is the third spot for Mission San Antonio de Valero, it is the only place the

Sam Houston sent orders wanting to demolish the fortifications in Bexar.
2. bowie said the Alamo in Bexar was a strategic "frontier picqet guard."
B. What did James bowie do during the battle?
1. He was elected by the Texan volunteers who occupied the Alamo to be commander instead of
William Travis.
2. 1500 or more Mexican cavalrymen under Santa Anna arrived on February 23 and requested a
parley. They told the Texans to surrender, but Bowie disregarded the orders.
3. 200 of their men brought together by Houston, William Travis, Davey Crockett and the men who
were already at the garrison fought hard for 13 days against the Mexican army.
C. James Bowie's last moments
1. March 6th the Mexican forces broke through a breach in a wall and over powered the men inside

The Battle of the Alamo
Battles upon battles have been fought between the United States of America and an opposing force,
but none were quite like the one that was fought in 1836. The Alamo, a mission compound in San
Antonio, Texas, was surprise attacked by General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army. This army
consisted of about 1,800 Mexican soldiers. To the Texans defending the Alamo, this army should
have easily overcome them. The Texan army, led by James Bowie and William Travis, had only
about 200 troops. Nevertheless, the Texan army fought until the end. Their perseverance makes the
Battle of the Alamo a battle to remember. In the 1820's, Spanish power in Mexico weakened. This
caused Mexico to become an independent nation in 1821. Then, in 1824, the "Republic of Mexico"
was established. After the Republic of Mexico came the "First Mexican Empire." This was a short
moment of rule by a monarch. That monarch was President Antonio López de Santa Anna, a Creole
soldier and politician. Santa Anna ruled as Mexican president numerous times over a period greater
than twenty years, and his rule was powerful. Under his rule, Santa Anna imposed many unfair laws
on Mexican Texas, and tensions grew. Some of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

commanders in charge of the Texan army, James Bowie and William Travis. Like many other battles
fought during the Texas Revolution, the Texan forces were outnumbered. Santa Anna's army
consisted of a little fewer than 2,000 men at this point, while the Texans defending the Alamo had
less than 300 troops. The final siege of the Alamo lasted about thirteen days and ended when nearly
all of the Texan troops were dead. By March 6th, a little fewer than 600 Mexican soldiers lost their

As the Mexicans moved forward they yelled out "Viva Santa Anna". De La Pena was at the North
wall and minutes followed and later on captured the confusion. Combat followed with rifle butts,
bayonets, knives, axes, ramrods, and anything else that is hand to hand. There were simply too many
Mexicans coming from too many sides the Texans couldn't defend themselves that good. Most of the
women and children were huddled inside when the walls of the fort were breaded. Outside the main
plaza the battle had entered a different phase that they could no longer keep the Mexicans out. One
man burrowed under the bush while another man hid beneath the bridge spanning the San Antonio
River shooting up to the Mexicans. Travis had prepared for this order small holes pounded through
the walls of some rooms that luckily no people were in. The Mexican offers ordered The Alamo
cannon, turned in word and began blasting away at doors. The columns of Mexican soldiers were
hard to stop in the middle of the dark landscape. Texans were now awake and at their positions.
From the cannon nearest to the Travis, he sent nearly fifty men including one of their captains. The
Gen. Cos column had suffered forty men who were severely killed. The Mexicans cannons were
super silent they were afraid that they would hit their own soldiers. While all of this was happening
on the north side of the fort, the east and south side had their own

The Girl of the Alamo
We have all heard of the heroic men of the Alamo, but one hero you might not know about was a
woman by the name of Susanna Dickinson. She was the wife of Captain Almeron Dickinson who
was the assistant to Colonel William B. Travis. In this book, I learned a little about Susanna's early
life when she was married at the young age of fifteen and the day to day telling of events leading up
to, during, and after the battle at the Alamo. Susanna Wilkerson Dickinson was born on a Tennessee
farm in 1814. Not much is known of her early life. She met Almeron Dickinson one day at a
blacksmith shop in Tennessee where she watched him hammering red hot iron into shapes. They
were married not long after. During the first week of their marriage they lived Bolivar, TN where
Susanna's husband met Green DeWitt. DeWitt told Almeron about a place called Texas where he
was given grants to bring 400 families to settle there. Almeron and Susanna decided to move to
Texas and start a family. They settled on a piece of land near Gonzales, 70 miles east of San Antonio
de Bexar, now known as San Antonio. Almeron set up a blacksmith shop there and they had their
first and only child, Angelina. They were given a heifer and a small scrappy dog they named J.B. ...

position. Susanna's husband was able to get away from his post to join his wife in the sacristy. He

Have you ever heard about the Alamo? If you have, well it's pretty common because the Alamo is
something well known for what it stood for. If you didn't know the Alamo, it is in San Antonio and it
stood for a very good reason. Let me begin in the Alamo, it was originally built as the chapel of the
Mission San Antonio de Valero. Alike all of the spanish missions it was both a, religious and
industrial trade school for indians. For years it had a couple of huts and a small stone tower until, it
was destroyed by a storm in 1724. Soon the first stone church was constructed in 1744 and then
collapsed in 1756. They started with the second church but it was never finished, it also still stands
in the Alamo Plaza. 37 years later (1793) nothing really happened but, San Antonio de Valero was
still a home to missionaries and their Native American converts until, the spanish authorities saw the

This allowed the defenders to shoot in two different directions. However, William B. Travis faced
serious weaknesses. The surrounding wall was incomplete or partly in ruins. The defenders in The
Alamo made a fence made of sticks and dirt at the uncompleted wall but, this point was weak.
William B. Travis had to defend a huge area of about 460 feet long and 160 feet wide within the
Alamo walls. To defend the Alamo successfully William B. Travis thought he needed more soldiers
because of the large Mexican Army. Despite all these weaknesses Travis and the other defenders
were determined to hold the Alamo. Some help did arrive but it wasn't enough for defending the
Alamo. Colonel James Fannin started to head to San Antonio with 300 men. The effort collapsed
because of the broken wagons and shoeless soldiers, however. Then Colonel James Fannin returned

Understanding The Alamo
Understanding the Battle of the Alamo
INTRODUCTON The Battle of the Alamo was an extremely important Battle for the Southern
States, and one of the well–known civil engagements in United States History. The battle only lasted
13 days, but was a major strategic point for both forces, the Mexicans and Americans. During the
battle, many factors played roles in the outcome of March 6. Many of those factors belong to the
Mexicans and the way they approached the battle. In addition, the facts that have lived in infamy
since that day are well known throughout the people of the United States; the courage of those men
and the famous men we know as Bowie and Crockett. However, there are many other facts that are
widely unknown to those ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One fact that emphasizes this notion is that the Mexican Army encountered a sudden blizzard in
route to Texas that began on the evening of February 13 and continued through the next day. The
weather during this storm was severe enough to kill horses, mules, men and camp followers.
However, the snowstorm did not extend into Texas. Two observers in Texas in 1836, William
Fairfax Gray and Colonel Juan Almonte, both kept records of the weather in their journals. From
their entries, information was gathered that reveals the weather at the time of the battle. A cold front
arrived on the evening of February 25 that dropped the temperatures into the 30s. Prior to that, it had
been "shirt sleeve" weather. It remained cold and rainy but warmed to nearly 60 degrees on February
29th. That night, a second cold front swept the region. The temperature gradually warmed over the
next few days. It remained cool on March 6, but by March 8 Gray proclaimed "Fine weather". Any
Texan should recognize this as a description of typical Texas weather (Texas A&M, 2016, N.P.).
The Battle of the Alamo was a battle between rebellious Texans and the Mexican army. The Alamo
was a fortified old mission in the center of the town of San Antonio de Béxar, it was defended by
about 189 rebellious Texans, chief among them Lt. Colonel William Travis, famed frontiersman Jim
Bowie and former Congressman Davy Crockett. A massive Mexican army led by President/General
Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna opposed them. After a two–week obstruction, Mexican forces
attacked at dawn on March 6 the Alamo was overran in less than two hours (The Alamo, 2016,

The Battle Of The Alamo
Abstract The Battle of the Alamo was more than the name simply implies. It was more than a battle
between two opposing forces during the Texas Revolution. It was a battle of competing political
issues between the Mexican government and the interests of the United States of America. It is
difficult to truly understand the significance of the Battle of the Alamo without describing the events
that occurred before. Before the actual Battle of the Alamo, the Mexican Army conducted a 13 day
siege. The prelude of the Battle of the Alamo will help those unfamiliar with this pivotal event
understand how everything culminated in the 13 day siege and eventual victory for the Mexican
forces. The Alamo The building in San Antonio we call the Alamo, originally was built as the chapel
of the Mission San Antonio de Valero. It was built in 1724 outside of San Antonio de Bexar, which
is modern day San Antonio, Texas. The purpose of this mission was to help convert Mexican–
Indians to Catholicism. During this time, Mexico was still a colony of Spain. In 1794, construction
was halted, rendering the compound incomplete. The compound later adopted a new name when a
group of Spanish Soldiers began using the compound. The Soldiers hailed from a Mexican town
called Alamo de Parras. The mission was then called The Alamo (Ramos, 1992) . The Onset of
Filibusters Before Texas was officially a part of the United States of America, men known as
Filibusters traversed throughout America.

William Bart Travis As A Role Model
Who was William Barret Travis? Born and raised in South Carolina, he studied law and found work
as a teacher before marrying young, at the age of 19. His wife, Rosanna Cato, was one of his
students. In 1831, after working as an attorney and a newspaper editor, Travis made the decision to
abandon his failing marriage and make a new start in Texas. (He was also likely facing mounting
debts.) He left his wife, young son and unborn daughter in South Carolina and applied for a land
grant in the new colony formed by Stephen F. Austin.

By 1834, after being arrested in a clash with troops from the local Mexican garrison in the
community of Anahuac, Travis returned to San Felipe and joined the local government there. As
simmering tensions with Mexico threatened to boil over into rebellion, Travis was one of the first to
sign up for the Texan forces. At one point, Santa Anna personally ordered his arrest, boosting his
profile exponentially among the Texas rebels. By late 1835, Travis had risen in the ranks to become

On The Border Chapter 4 Summary
In Chapter 4 of On the Border by Char Miller, he discusses the importance of San Antonio's park
system and how it can to be with the help of elected city officials. He conveys that in the 1990s–
Mario Salas was elected as the councilman of District 2, which serves the east side of San Antonio.
His goals were to increase the number of parks in the east side in order to expand that side of town.
The East Side of San Antonio has always been a historically black neighborhood. In the 20th
century, San Antonio had a commissioner style government in order to create a city of parks. They
created parks such as San Pedro and Brackenridge Park. These parks were created in order to make
San Antonio a city that appreciated the green, open space. They

In the film "The Alamo", Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, is the commander of the Mexican forces.
On the Texans side however, it is a little disputed. Sam Houston later becomes commander of the
entire army, but at the Alamo it is Jim Bowie. But many others trust William Travis as their leader,
once Jim Bowie gets terribly ill. A few names of people on both sides are Santa Anna, leader of the
Mexican forces. And for the Texas rebellion, are sharpshooter David Crockett, William Travis, Jim

The Texas Revolution And The Alamo : A Fight For Freedom
The Texas Revolution and the Alamo: A Fight for Freedom The Battle of the Alamo, a thirteen day
siege at the Alamo Mission in the middle of San Antonio Texas. Although it resulted in a Mexican
victory it was a crucial turning point in the Texas Revolution. The Texas Revolution did not occur
because of cultural differences nor did the Battle of the Alamo, they were both caused by both the
newly arrived Texans and the native Tejanos fighting for autonomy from the Mexican government.
President General Antonio López de Santa Anna repealed the constitution of 1824 in favor of a more
"centralist" government, because of this conversion to centralism the native people's rights became
increasingly limited. The Texans and Tejanos living along the border of Texas and the rest of
Mexico were not supportive of Santa Anna's new regime and began to revolt. However, it was not
just the people of Texas pushing for independence, citizens of the United States were also providing
a grand amount of support. The Siege of the Alamo was not a war based on cultural variations, both
the native people and the newly arrived texans were fighting for their independence from the
centralist Mexican government. San Antonio Valero, a mission known by most as the Alamo, a
symbol of not only American Nationalism, but also the quintessence of bravery and sovereignty. The

The Alamo : A Spanish Mission
The Event:
Background
The Alamo itself was a Spanish Mission, which had a main purpose of converting natives in the area
to Catholicism, the official Spanish religion. The time period in which it was establish along with
several other missions was during the Spanish Mission Period, which lasted from the early to late
18th century. The Alamo's original name was San Antonio de Valero in honor of Saint Anthony de
Padua (Official Alamo Website). It changed locations several times before it finally was moved to its
current location in 1724. It was the first of five Spanish missions in the current San Antonio area and
was home to many Spanish missionaries and Indian converts. However, converting natives was not
it's only purpose. It also served to convert the natives to the Spanish way of life in order to create a
self–sufficient population that could grow and sustain it–self as loyal Spanish subjects to keep other
European powers out of this area. But this strategy did not last for long. Near the end of the 18th
century, the Indian convert population had dwindled because of increased exposure to new diseases
carried by Europeans. By the early 19th century, much of the Eastern half of the North American
continent had become home to the budding American nation. Louisiana, which was located near the
Texas region of Mexico, had just been bought from the French by America as part of the Louisiana
Purchase agreement. The continued threats from French and American residents of

David Crockett's Remember The Alamo
Introduction "Do not be uneasy about me. I am among friends. I will close with great respects. Your
affectionate father. Farewell." These are final lines in a letter written by David (Davey) Crockett, to
his daughter and son–in–law in the weeks leading up to the thirteen–day siege by President General
Antonio of the Alamo Mission near modern day San Antonio. At some point during the siege:
Crockett, James Bowie, William Travis and a disputed one–hundred and eighty to two–hundred and
sixty men would give their lives in defense of the small, former Spanish Mission against a wildly,
numerically superior force. This battle and the deaths of these men would become the rallying point
of those throughout Texas declaring their independence from Mexico. "Remember the Alamo!"

In less than two hours time, the Mexican forces under the command of Santa Anna had seized the

While the Alamo and by extension San Antonio were lost to Santa Anna and his Army, the bravery

Once Sam Houston was able to muster enough of a force to counter attack, he was able to eventually

San Antonio Missions Essay
This historical site encompasses a chain of five frontier Catholic missions, built by Franciscan
missionaries along a 12.4 kilometer (7.7–mile) stretch of the San Antonio River in southern Texas in
the early part of the 18th century. These missions tell a story of the Spanish colonial period in North
America, and the efforts of the Spanish Crown to convert natives to Catholicism and protect and
sustain New Spain's northern frontier. The five missions are: San Jose, Espada, San Juan,
Concepcion, and The Alamo/San Antonio de Valero. The San Antonio Missions also represents a
blending of cultures–that of the Spanish and Coahuiltecan people, as evident in the decorative
Catholic symbols and nature–inspired indigenous designs of the compounds. Today, Concepcion,

Analysis Of The Movie ' The Alamo '
The Alamo is one of the most iconic historical events in America. Its known by everyone to be the
Symbol of American courage and self sacrifice, but many people do not know the events
surrounding the Alamo, such as how it was over 11 days long (Febuary 23 – March 6, 1836), or
even what conflicts lead up to the inevitable battle between the Rebels and the Mexian loyalists. The
story leading up to the Battle of the Alamo is much like many other stories about rebellion. It starts
with a leader making bad decisions. That real battle starts before the start of the Texas Revolution,
when the Mexican leader President General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, began to shift away from

As the war raged on, many battles were fought, some swift and glorious, and even more long and
gruesome,The icon of these long and horrible battles was of course, The Alamo. The Alamo,
originally called 'Mission San Antonio de Valero ', was originally a Spanish religious outpost that
was converted into a fort by the recently expelled Mexican Army. Sadly, though it was a fort, it was
a sorry excuse of one. It was designed to hold off attacks by native tribes, not an artillery–equipped
army. This design made it incredibly hard to defend for troops from an age where artillery and guns
ruled all, so a Texian engineer named Green Jameson constructed catwalks along the walls to allow
defenders to fire over them. This method, though effective, also came at a cost. The position that the
men had to take along the walls left the riflemens ' upper bodies completely exposed. The garrison
stationed there was horribly undermanned and underprovisioned, with less than 100 men stationed at
the fort by January of 1836. Luckily though, there were a number if cannons left behind by the
Mexican forces, which Jameson installed along the walls. The defenders also had a large 18–
pounder artillery cannon, which Jameson installed in the southwest corner of the fort. These artillery
cannons were a major advantage for the Texian forces, so much so that Jameson boasted to the

the men of the Alamo defended their position for 10 days until they inevitably fell. There were a

growing desire to expand further out west, driven partially by the premise of Manifest Destiny.

This battle in particular was vital, as The 13 day siege at the Alamo gave General Sam Houston the
necessary time he needed to gather his army for the battle at San Jacinto. Texans became incredibly

remaining Texan soldiers to fight the large Mexican Army. It was through this battle that Texas won
its independence, but none of it wouldn't have been possible had it not been for the defenders of the
Alamo. On the opposite side of it General Santa Anna sought to polish his image as Mexico's savior.
His demonizing of the Texans and rushing of his army to San Antonio was all a symbolic act to both
defeat the Texans and solidify his place as Dictator. General Santa Anna's strategy for defeating the
rebels was to simply wait them out while also cutting off their reinforcements and wearing down
their defenses to the point were a ground assault would become highly successful. The defenders of
the Alamo's only hope of surviving was to reinforce the mission and hope for reinforcements, but

Why Is The Alamo Important
THE ALAMO
Many people read and learn about the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas and the battle that went on
there. However, many do not know that it is also a United Nations World Heritage site. The Alamo
is significant to the people of Texas as a part of how it gained its independence from Mexico. The
Alamo tells a story of the event that took place there in 1836. This battle was a part of the
independence of Texas which helped people remember the odds and struggles these men sacrificed
for their freedom and it is important part in Texas history.
The Alamo was originally built as a mission church in 1718 for San Antonio de Valero. These
mission churches were used as schools for Indians, when not being used for church services. The
mission when first built was just several huts and a small stone tower. However, in 1724 the tower
was destroyed by a storm. It took approximately another twenty years for them to build a church
building that was finished in 1744. The construction of this church was not very good and it
collapsed in 1756. They then started to build another second church in 1758 to replace the one that
had collapsed, however, it was never finished and this is how it looks ... Show more content on

The Battle Of The Alamo
Introduction
Few battles have had such an affect on the American experience as the battle of the Alamo. This
battle is the subject of heroism, sacrifice, and valor. Would American history be the same if this
historical battle had never taken place? What would the implications be if the defenders of the
Alamo never sacrificed themselves for Texas independence? Although poor decisions and misuse of
available intelligence directly contributed to the devastating loss, the defeat at the Alamo was the
catalyst for the future success of the Texas Revolution. The defenders of the Alamo achieved their
goal of an independent Texas through their sacrifice. In this paper, I will examine the Alamo by
using the four–steps of battle analysis and discuss the implications of an alternate outcome for the
battle of the Alamo.

Definition of the Battle
The Battle of the Alamo took place in San Antonio de Béxar in a former mission originally named
San Antonio de Valero in 1744. In 1803, Spanish soldiers stationed at the mission renamed it the
Pueblo de la Compañia del Alamo after their hometown. The primary adversaries of the battle were
the centralist Mexican military led by Antonio López de Santa Anna and the Texas revolutionaries
led by William Barret Travis and James Bowie. The battle took place over the course of thirteen
days and ended on March 6, 1836 with Santa Anna victorious (Tinkle, 1958).

In times before the confrontation at the Alamo, the Mexican government welcomed settlers into

So in light of both sides having grievances it was only a matter of time before someone snapped.
And snapped they did, in a string of firecracker events the seeds of revolution and the battle of the
Alamo ensued.
The Alamo first saw action when General Cos landed at Copano, and headed to San Antonio to meet
up with Colonel Ugartechea. By now war was on everyone's mind and many events prior to Cos
marching toward San Antonio set the playing field for war, but not everyone really was for it,..... at
least not yet. Meanwhile, in Gonzales the revolution had started over a cannon that the settlers
would not give up. This is also were the phrase "come and take it!" was born. What had happen was
Ugartechea sent a lieutenant with some men to unarm a group of colonist who had a cannon at their
disposal in Gonzales. What the Mexican's did not count on was that in the end they would be sent
running off to San Antonio after being repulsed by the colonists. Now the colonists formed a small
army to March on Cos and his men, which the settlers wanted out of Texas for good. As Lord points
out Cos would be ready for the settlers in San Antonio. Lord also points out how the mission in San
Antonio got its name, Lord states that the mission once held a colonial company from the Alamo de
Parras in Mexico, and that the named carried over and was shortened to just being called the Alamo.

The Alamo
"Remember the Alamo," is a well–known saying in America, although few people really understand
what happened at The Battle of the Alamo. The Battle of the Alamo was fought between the Texans
and Mexicans. The Texans were fighting for their independence from Mexico. Although the
Mexican forces were victorious, this battle was a key event in the westward expansion of America.
The Alamo has become an American landmark due to the famous Battle of the Alamo in 1836, but
the Alamo itself started off vastly different. The building is located in a section of downtown San
Antonio, Texas. The word Alamo actually stands for "cottonwood" and thus was named due to the
cottonwood trees that surrounded the site. The Alamo was originally established as mission in 1718
and erected in 1724. (Selcraig)
Before understanding the importance of the Battle of the Alamo, a brief history of the region is
needed and the understanding of the factors that lead to the battle itself. Shortly after Mexico gained
its independence from Spain in 1821, the young republic was desperate to populate its northern state
of Texas. There was an attempt to gain control of the vast territory, but there was a problem. The
problem was that the area was already inhabited by Apache and Comanche tribes who were not

The State Of Texas Gained Its Independence
The state of Texas gained its independence on December 29, 1845 after six and a half enduring
months of ceaseless brawls. The colonization of Texas first began with Stephen F. Austin, whom is
also recognized as the Father of Texas. Stephen began the uprising for self–reliance against the
Army of Mexico, led by Antonio López de Santa Anna, when he proposed opening up Texas to a
swamp of immigrants. This action of his branched off throughout the years into countless battles for
the Lonestar state to become individualistic. The first battle of the Revolution was the Battle of

the most memorable engagements within this period of time, where the legendary cry, ''Remember

The Battle Of The Alamo
The battle of the Alamo has been one of the most significant events in not only the Texas
Revolution, but American and Mexican history as well. The battle of the Alamo started in February
of 1836 and ended in March of 1836, lasting less than two weeks' total. The battle was between the
Mexican army and the rebelling Texans. The Mexican army was led by the Mexican President and
General, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, while the rebelling Texans were led by Lt. Colonel William
Travis, Jim Bowie, and David Crockett. The battle of the Alamo happened to be one of the most
pivotal points in the Texas Revolution causing both countries to experience the complete opposite of
the projected outcome, eventually resulting in Texas' independence.
Before the Alamo, the battle was named The Mission San Antonio de Valero, which was established
in the 18th century. The soldiers who were there called the mission El Alamo after the cottonwood
trees surrounding the land. Overtime, the mission was renamed the Alamo. Many of Spanish settlers
built the Mission San Antonio de Valero on the banks of the San Antonio River around 1718. The
Mission San Antonio de Valero happened to house not only missionaries, but their Native American
converts as well. They did this for approximately 70 years until Spanish authorities decided to split
up their land and distribute it to many of the residents. The Alamo was first occupied by Spanish
soldiers. After the Spanish soldiers, Mexican soldiers came to occupy it.

What Is The Battle Of The Alamo?
The Battle of the Alamo was a 13 day siege at a mission in San Antonio that was fought between
February 23, 1836 – March 6, 1836 by Mexican forces of about 4000, under President General
Santa Anna, against a handful of 180 American rebels fighting for Texan independence from Mexico
(american–historama.org). This was a very important war for the Texans, this war decided if the

Battle Of The Alamo Research Paper
Did you know that Texas was actually once Mexican territory? You may wonder why Texas is one
of the 50 states in America today, and what were the events leading up to the Mexican American
war. But why does a simple mission church relate to all of it? The battle of the Alamo was one of the
most gruesome battles in American history. Today the Alamo Cenotaph stands 60 feet tall in the
heart of San Antonio to honor all of the brave men and women who lost their lives for the freedom
of Texas. Today America would be very different if the Mexican American war had not occurred.
The Alamo was originally built in 1744 as a mission church to try to convert Native Americans and
Mexican Citizens to Christianity. The Alamo was build in present day San Antonio, Texas. ... Show

The men fought very bravely and had some of the best fighters in America at their side, such as
Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and William B. Travis were all patriots who came together to fight for
Texas's freedom. All of the soldiers who fought for the Alamo were volunteers, all wanting their
freedom from the Santa Anna. The Texan soldiers defeated over 700 of the Santa Anna's soldiers but
still lost the battle of the Alamo.
The battle of the Alamo lasted all day and all night, for thirteen days! The men were tired and they
were losing. The Santa Anna was attacking from all sides of the Texan base. The rebels were losing
hope but knew they could not flee to safety, for they would be caught by the Santa Anna, and be
killed. The rebels knew they had lost, but they fought to the death for their country. On the dawn of
the thirteenth day of the war the Santa Anna forced their way into the base. Immediately all hope
was lost and the men said goodbye to their hiding families and tried to hold off the attacking Santa
Anna so their families could escape. Unfortunately the Santa Anna had expected the Texans to flee
so they had men hidden waiting to kill the

  • 1. Jim Blackman Research Paper In Jim's early life he was born in Logan County, Kentucky in April of 1796. When Jim was six years old his family moved to Bayou Boeuf, Louisiana in 1802. In Louisiana, he developed the spirit of adventure. His usual hobby was wrestling alligators and just exploring around the areas he lived by. In 1812 he enlisted in the Louisiana militia after the start of the war in 1812 against the British but he was too late to see any action. Soon he was back in the Louisiana selling timber. But with the money that he earned he bought slaves. Jim later met Jean Lafitte, who was a gulf coast pirate who was involved with illegal slave smuggling. Jim's brothers bought smuggled slaves and said that they found them and kept the money when they were sold at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The ad interim government of the new Republic of Texas and much of the civilian population fled eastward ahead of the Mexican forces. The conflict arose after Antonio López de Santa Anna abrogated the 1824 constitution of Mexico and established martial law in Coahuila y Tejas. The Texians resisted and declared their independence. It was Sam Houston's responsibility, as the appointed commander–in–chief of the Provisional Army of Texas (before such an army actually existed), to recruit and train a military force to defend the population against troops led by Santa Anna. Residents on the Gulf Coast and at San Antonio de Béxar began evacuating in January upon learning of the Mexican army's troop movements into their area, an event that was ultimately replayed across Texas. During early skirmishes, some Texian soldiers surrendered, believing that they would become prisoners of war – but Santa Anna demanded their executions. The news of the Battle of the Alamo and the Goliad massacre instilled fear in the population and resulted in the mass exodus of the civilian population of Gonzales, where the opening battle of the Texian revolution had begun and where, only days before the fall of the Alamo, they had sent a militia to reinforce the defenders at the mission. The civilian refugees were accompanied by the newly forming provisional army, as Houston bought time to train soldiers and create a military structure that could oppose Santa Anna's greater forces. ... After a hurricane destroyed most of the existing buildings in 1724, the mission was re–established on its present site on the east bank of the San Antonio River. Replacing earlier adobe structures, the two–story, arcaded stone building eventually included two wings along the west and south edges of an inner courtyard, immediately north of the church. The convento, now known as the long barracks, also served to house the friars, offices, kitchens, dining room, and guest rooms. The construction of The Alamo began on May 8,1744. It was built with lots of blocks of limestone. Originally, The Alamo was designed to have two bell towers and a domed roof, but was never really completed. This paper will show how using Intellectual standards and critical seasoning can be used to conduct battle analysis as well as develop and alternate outcome to a historical battle. The turning point in the fight for Texas' independence from Mexico was the fight at the Alamo again Santa Ana. If Santa Ana would not have won that decisive victory over the Texas militia at the Alamo, the fight for Independence from Mexico would have possibly taken longer to rally the troops. That instant when the Alamo fell, intertwined Santa Ana's fate with the Alamo. (LSJunction, 1999) What if Santa Ana did not strategically place forces around the Alamo and reinforcements had come to aid the Alamo? The Alamo was never intended to be a defensive position by any means, but was meant to be a mission. The Mission San Antonio De Valero, established in the early 18th century, was situated along the San Antonio River. By 1800, the missionaries were displaced and their land was seized for military purposes. Occupying soldiers called the Mission–turned–garrison El Alamo after the cottonwood trees surrounding it. Eventually the mission was officially renamed The Alamo. First Spanish soldiers, then Mexican soldiers occupied The Alamo. With only 200 Texan soldiers defending the Alamo, Santa Ana lost 600 soldiers during the 13 day siege of the Alamo. Reinforcements would have turned the tide in favor of the Texans. William B. Travis wrote a letter to the people of Texas and all Americans. • 21. The Battle Of The Alamo Keren Lee Mr. Lewis AP US History 1 2 December 2014 The Battle of the Alamo The Battle of the Alamo was a devastating battle between the Texan and Mexican Army that occurred in the midst of the Texas Revolution and had an everlasting effect on the country and then state of Texas. The Alamo wasn't built with the intention of being a fort. The Event– The Alamo In the early 1700s the Spanish set up a mission in Texas to house local Native Americans and convert individuals to Catholicism. The mission was founded by Antonio de San Buenaventura, and was called the San Antonio de Valero Mission. The mission had three locations. The first was near San Pedro Creek, the second was closer to where it is today and the third location of the mission is where the Alamo stands today. Alamo expert, Melinda Tomerlin, of alamo.org says, "While this is the third spot for Mission San Antonio de Valero, it is the only place the 'Alamo ' has ever been" (Tomerlin). In 1793 the Spanish government seized control of many missions, including the San Antonio de Valero Mission. They wanted to secularize the missions, and in the 1800s Spanish troops were stationed in the abandoned mission because of its key location. The mission then became a fort. The soldiers of the fort nicknamed it "El Alamo" (meaning cottonwood) because the fort stood in an orchid of cottonwood trees. After Mexico 's victory in the war for independence from Spain, Mexican soldiers were stationed at the fort until after the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

And since then the Alamo has entered itself deeply into the American spirit and for reasons that have nothing to do with aggressive pride, militarism, or passion with blood. No, it has to do with the fact that we measure our experiences against the situations, not against average ones. The Alamo, a mission compound in San Antonio, Texas, was surprise attacked by General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army. This army consisted of about 1,800 Mexican soldiers. To the Texans defending the Alamo, this army should have easily overcome them. The Texan army, led by James Bowie and William Travis, had only about 200 troops. Nevertheless, the Texan army fought until the end. Their perseverance makes the Battle of the Alamo a battle to remember. In the 1820's, Spanish power in Mexico weakened. This caused Mexico to become an independent nation in 1821. Then, in 1824, the "Republic of Mexico" was established. After the Republic of Mexico came the "First Mexican Empire." This was a short moment of rule by a monarch. That monarch was President Antonio López de Santa Anna, a Creole soldier and politician. Amberlyn Carruthers The Girl of the Alamo We have all heard of the heroic men of the Alamo, but one hero you might not know about was a woman by the name of Susanna Dickinson. She was the wife of Captain Almeron Dickinson who was the assistant to Colonel William B. Travis. In this book, I learned a little about Susanna's early life when she was married at the young age of fifteen and the day to day telling of events leading up to, during, and after the battle at the Alamo. Susanna Wilkerson Dickinson was born on a Tennessee farm in 1814. Not much is known of her early life. She met Almeron Dickinson one day at a blacksmith shop in Tennessee where she watched him hammering red hot iron into shapes. They were married not long after. During the first week of their marriage they lived Bolivar, TN where Susanna's husband met Green DeWitt. DeWitt told Almeron about a place called Texas where he was given grants to bring 400 families to settle there. Almeron and Susanna decided to move to Texas and start a family. They settled on a piece of land near Gonzales, 70 miles east of San Antonio de Bexar, now known as San Antonio. Understanding The Alamo Understanding the Battle of the Alamo INTRODUCTON The Battle of the Alamo was an extremely important Battle for the Southern States, and one of the well–known civil engagements in United States History. The battle only lasted 13 days, but was a major strategic point for both forces, the Mexicans and Americans. During the battle, many factors played roles in the outcome of March 6. Many of those factors belong to the Mexicans and the way they approached the battle. In addition, the facts that have lived in infamy since that day are well known throughout the people of the United States; the courage of those men and the famous men we know as Bowie and Crockett. One fact that emphasizes this notion is that the Mexican Army encountered a sudden blizzard in route to Texas that began on the evening of February 13 and continued through the next day. The weather during this storm was severe enough to kill horses, mules, men and camp followers. However, the snowstorm did not extend into Texas. Two observers in Texas in 1836, William Fairfax Gray and Colonel Juan Almonte, both kept records of the weather in their journals. From their entries, information was gathered that reveals the weather at the time of the battle. A cold front arrived on the evening of February 25 that dropped the temperatures into the 30s. Prior to that, it had been "shirt sleeve" weather. It remained cold and rainy but warmed to nearly 60 degrees on February 29th. That night, a second cold front swept the region. The temperature gradually warmed over the next few days. It remained cool on March 6, but by March 8 Gray proclaimed "Fine weather". Any Texan should recognize this as a description of typical Texas weather (Texas A&M, 2016, N.P.). The Battle of the Alamo was a battle between rebellious Texans and the Mexican army. It was a battle of competing political issues between the Mexican government and the interests of the United States of America. It is difficult to truly understand the significance of the Battle of the Alamo without describing the events that occurred before. Before the actual Battle of the Alamo, the Mexican Army conducted a 13 day siege. The prelude of the Battle of the Alamo will help those unfamiliar with this pivotal event understand how everything culminated in the 13 day siege and eventual victory for the Mexican forces. The Alamo The building in San Antonio we call the Alamo, originally was built as the chapel of the Mission San Antonio de Valero. It was built in 1724 outside of San Antonio de Bexar, which is modern day San Antonio, Texas. The purpose of this mission was to help convert Mexican– Indians to Catholicism. During this time, Mexico was still a colony of Spain. In 1794, construction was halted, rendering the compound incomplete. The compound later adopted a new name when a group of Spanish Soldiers began using the compound. The Soldiers hailed from a Mexican town called Alamo de Parras. The mission was then called The Alamo (Ramos, 1992) . The Texas Revolution And The Alamo : A Fight For Freedom The Texas Revolution and the Alamo: A Fight for Freedom The Battle of the Alamo, a thirteen day siege at the Alamo Mission in the middle of San Antonio Texas. Although it resulted in a Mexican victory it was a crucial turning point in the Texas Revolution. The Texas Revolution did not occur because of cultural differences nor did the Battle of the Alamo, they were both caused by both the newly arrived Texans and the native Tejanos fighting for autonomy from the Mexican government. President General Antonio López de Santa Anna repealed the constitution of 1824 in favor of a more "centralist" government, because of this conversion to centralism the native people's rights became increasingly limited. The Texans and Tejanos living along the border of Texas and the rest of Mexico were not supportive of Santa Anna's new regime and began to revolt. However, it was not just the people of Texas pushing for independence, citizens of the United States were also providing a grand amount of support. The Siege of the Alamo was not a war based on cultural variations, both the native people and the newly arrived texans were fighting for their independence from the centralist Mexican government. It also served to convert the natives to the Spanish way of life in order to create a self–sufficient population that could grow and sustain it–self as loyal Spanish subjects to keep other European powers out of this area. But this strategy did not last for long. Near the end of the 18th century, the Indian convert population had dwindled because of increased exposure to new diseases carried by Europeans. This design made it incredibly hard to defend for troops from an age where artillery and guns ruled all, so a Texian engineer named Green Jameson constructed catwalks along the walls to allow defenders to fire over them. This method, though effective, also came at a cost. The position that the men had to take along the walls left the riflemens ' upper bodies completely exposed. The garrison stationed there was horribly undermanned and underprovisioned, with less than 100 men stationed at the fort by January of 1836. Luckily though, there were a number if cannons left behind by the Mexican forces, which Jameson installed along the walls. The defenders also had a large 18– pounder artillery cannon, which Jameson installed in the southwest corner of the fort. These artillery cannons were a major advantage for the Texian forces, so much so that Jameson boasted to the Texian Army commander ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Led by Colonel William B. Travis the men of the Alamo defended their position for 10 days until they inevitably fell. There were a bevy of factors that led to the United States to declare war on Mexico. For example, the language barrier was a contributing factor as was the difference in religions. Their was also the United States growing desire to expand further out west, driven partially by the premise of Manifest Destiny. This battle in particular was vital, as The 13 day siege at the Alamo gave General Sam Houston the necessary time he needed to gather his army for the battle at San Jacinto. Texans became incredibly inspired by the bravery of the rebels and the battle cry of "Remember the Alamo" spurred the remaining Texan soldiers to fight the large Mexican Army. It was through this battle that Texas won its independence, but none of it wouldn't have been possible had it not been for the defenders of the Alamo. On the opposite side of it General Santa Anna sought to polish his image as Mexico's savior. His demonizing of the Texans and rushing of his army to San Antonio was all a symbolic act to both defeat the Texans and solidify his place as Dictator. General Santa Anna's strategy for defeating the rebels was to simply wait them out while also cutting off their reinforcements and wearing down their defenses to the point were a ground assault would become highly successful. The defenders of the Alamo's only hope of surviving was to reinforce the mission and hope for reinforcements, but logistically they knew they had no chance of defeating the Mexican army of General Santa ... However, many do not know that it is also a United Nations World Heritage site. The Alamo is significant to the people of Texas as a part of how it gained its independence from Mexico. The Alamo tells a story of the event that took place there in 1836. This battle was a part of the independence of Texas which helped people remember the odds and struggles these men sacrificed for their freedom and it is important part in Texas history. The Alamo was originally built as a mission church in 1718 for San Antonio de Valero. These mission churches were used as schools for Indians, when not being used for church services. The mission when first built was just several huts and a small stone tower. However, in 1724 the tower was destroyed by a storm. It took approximately another twenty years for them to build a church building that was finished in 1744. The construction of this church was not very good and it collapsed in 1756. He was a military leader and politician whose actions made a lasting mark. Sam Houston took a stand for Texas through his leadership in the Texan army, securing self–rule, and by setting the foundation for the annexation of Texas. Before the arrival of Sam Houston, Stephen Austin, an American, set out to colonize land owned by the Spanish Empire. Continuing the plans of his father Moses, Austin arranged the movement of hundreds of families to his newly acquired space as a result of a Spanish grant (Encyclopedia of American History Expansion and Reform 1813–1855 Volume IV). • 118. The Battle Of The Alamo Introduction Few battles have had such an affect on the American experience as the battle of the Alamo. This battle is the subject of heroism, sacrifice, and valor. Would American history be the same if this historical battle had never taken place? What would the implications be if the defenders of the Alamo never sacrificed themselves for Texas independence? Although poor decisions and misuse of available intelligence directly contributed to the devastating loss, the defeat at the Alamo was the catalyst for the future success of the Texas Revolution. The defenders of the Alamo achieved their goal of an independent Texas through their sacrifice. In this paper, I will examine the Alamo by using the four–steps of battle analysis and discuss the implications of an alternate outcome for the battle of the Alamo. Discussion Definition of the Battle The Battle of the Alamo took place in San Antonio de Béxar in a former mission originally named San Antonio de Valero in 1744. In 1803, Spanish soldiers stationed at the mission renamed it the Pueblo de la Compañia del Alamo after their hometown. The primary adversaries of the battle were the centralist Mexican military led by Antonio López de Santa Anna and the Texas revolutionaries led by William Barret Travis and James Bowie. The battle took place over the course of thirteen days and ended on March 6, 1836 with Santa Anna victorious (Tinkle, 1958).
