Benguet History
BENGUET HISTORY
Early in the 19th century after the Spanish explorer Guillermo Galvey's report of his expedition, the
Spanish government organized the mountain region into six commandancias politico militar",
namely: Benguet in 1846, Lepanto in 1852, Bontoc in 1859, Amburayan in 1889, and Kayapa and
Cabugaoan in 1891. The Province of Benguet, as now constituted, has portions which were parts of
the Districts of Lepanto, Bontoc and Amburayan.
The early commandancias were divided into rancherias. The commandancia of Benguet was divided
into 41 rancherias, with La Trinidad as the capital. It was named in honor of Don Galvey's wife
Trinidad. The first "Kapitan" of Benguet was Pulito of Kafagway, now Baguio City, which was then

The American established civil government in Benguet by 1900. On August 13, 1908, Benguet
became a sub–province of the Mountain Province together with Amburayan, Apayao, Bontoc,
Ifugao, Kalinga and Lepanto. During the 1930s, mining companies began massive operations to
work the gold mines in the area. This attracted many lowlanders to work and settle in the area,
especially in towns surrounding the mines, including Itogon.
During World War II, Benguet was the site of fierce battles fought by Igorot guerrillas and American
forces to open up the western flank of the Japanese defenders during the final days of liberation in
1945. By authority of the President of the United States, the US Philippine Commission enacted Act
No. 49 on November 23, 1900, establishing a civil government for the Province of Benguet. The
officers of this government were a provincial governor, provincial secretary and a provincial
inspector. All these officers shall reside and have their offices in the township of Baguio, which shall
be the capital of the province. The governor shall be the chief executive of the province. Until such
time as a treasurer shall be appointed for the province, the governor shall act as provincial treasurer,
subject to the provisions of the general law. He shall also make known to the people of his province
through proclamations or communications delivered to the presidents of each township, all general
laws or governmental orders. Mr. H. P. Whitmarsh, a Canadian

The Accomplishments Of Sam Houston
Contrary to the typical stereotypes of Texans, Sam Houston was much more than a drunkard and an
excellent gunslinger. Although, he possessed these traits as well, Houston displayed a certain level
of maturity, honor, and critical thinking that most men, or even women, at the time did not own. To
assume Sam Houston was a one trick pony, or only skilled in one aspect merely because of his
heritage and place of birth would be an understatement, as his father was a major . The tall,
handsome troublemaker did not fit in with the standard expected of boys or men during his time,
however, he is one of the most revered political figures not only in Texas's history, but also the
history of the nation as a whole. Houston held numerous political ... Show more content on

After a few years of going to church with his family fervently on Sundays, fourteen year old Sam
lost his father, which later on would describe as "Only one for passion, a military life" .
In his early life, and for the rest of it, Sam Houston's reputation was that of a rebel and a
troublemaker due to the problems he would get himself into. Subsequently, he did not work as hard
or as fervently as his siblings during his childhood, whether it be on the family farm or the general
store they owned in Maryland, and that particularly undesirable trait would follow him into his
death. Sam ran away multiple times a child and young adult, finding himself among a new family
separate to his own that he did not expect to become affiliated with. However so, he grew closer to
this adopted family than his own, becoming an honorary member of this group; Houston became an
honorary member of the three hundred person Cherokee tribe led by forty–five year old Chief Oo–
loo–te–ka , whose name means "He who puts away the drum" in English. Houston himself stated he
preferred the company of nature and the Indians to the tyranny of his brothers and did not return to
his mother for more than a year later, regardless of his brother's pleading. Eventually, after he
disappeared again for another two years after returning to his home, and he lived among the

Sam Houston was born in Rockbridge, Virginia on March 2,1793. He dedicated all of his life
defending his beliefs without giving up. His first major role was joining in the U.S Army and
demonstrated that he was able to rise rapidly, personal qualities of openness and friendliness and
also a determination of never throwing the towel. Houston also had the quality of being a noble
person, willing to protect the people that practically raised him, the Cherokees. After leaving them,
he was appointed agent in managing the removal of the tribe, but always seeking to protect them
from any injustice. His popularity, courage and commanding presence allowed him to rise in the

For Houston, Andrew Jackson was his idol. They both shared same beliefs like "The Federal Union,
it must be preserved" and pro–slavery views.Houston even supported his presidential campaign and
worked closely with him. Old Hickory was like a mentor to Sam Houston and helped him rise in
politics. Another key individual in the live of Sam Houston is John Jolly( Chief Oo–loo–te–ka),
because he became his adoptive father and was basically the one that taught him lessons that
reached beyond Indian culture and Indian–white relations, he is the one that made Houston a person
that favored peace over war. For Houston, life with Cherokees was "greatly to his own satisfaction
and comfort" and it basically shaped his future. Margaret Lea was the third wife of Sam Houston. As
he put it, he loved his wife "almost to madness". She was crucial in the life of Houston because she
gave him happiness by loving him and having 8 children together. After being unsuccessful at love,
Houston had the loving wife and family that he had always wanted.r, she even persuaded him to stop
excessive drinking and convinced him to join the Baptist

Sam Houston was as legend reports a big man about six foot and six inches tall. He was an exciting

was enthusiastically received by Andrew Jackson at a reception for the Diplomatic Corps. Houston
also was somewhat of a writer. His first newspaper column was written to defend the position of
Indians and was published in The Arkansas Gazette under the name Tah–lohn–tusky. It was at this
time he married a Native American named Tiana Rogers (second wife) in a Cherokee Indian
ceremony.
Sam Houston was an ambitious businessman also. He and several of his associates purchased the
Grand Saline and the land surrounding it from the Osage children of A.P. Chouteau. Houston sold a
"third interest" in his purchase of the Grand Saline for $6,500. Houston returns to Baker County,
Tennessee and was at his mother's side when she dies. Sam Houston went to Washington, D.C. and

A Good Time To Die Summary
General George A. Custer, was in deed the key factor, that enabled the Lakota, Sioux to defeat the
7th US Cavalry at the battle of little Horn in 1876. I believe there was a defeat on the 7th Cavalry,
due to Custer's arrogance and his stupidity. At the time general Phillip Sheridan made plans to send
generals, troops and officers to take land away from the Indians, he didn't realize the arrogance that
bolted Custer at the time. Sitting Bull, the chief of the Lakota tribe awaited the time for war,
knowing the Americans would come back to try to steal their land from them, the tribe prepared
themselves for what was to come. According to the Documentary "A Good Time To Die" Sitting
Bull tells his tribe the soldiers will fall into their camp. In

Chemical Warfare During The First World War
Chemical Warfare in the First World War The First World War, while engulfing Europe with four
years of death and destruction, also served as something of a testing ground, allowing nations to test
and deploy the newest and most high tech weapons in their arsenals. It is from these experiences, on
the bitter, mud drenched fields of Flanders, Eastern Europe, and elsewhere, that many technologies
that shape the modern battlefield today, such as the air plane or the tank, were first put to use on a
grand scale. It is here too, that another weapon was unleashed upon humanity for first time, but this
one was deemed so sinister that the nations of the world near unanimously agreed to ban once the
war ended. A weapon so awful that even today, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Its use, however, despite its non–lethality, served to set a dangerous precedent for the war. German
planners wasted no time in developing their own incapacitating agents to retaliate with, and before
long something of a chemical weapons arms race was underway. The German chemical response
finally came that October, when British forces at Neuve Chapelle were hit with a wave of xylyl
bromide, and apparently the Germans like what they saw. In January, they decided to turn their new
weapon against the Russian army, in what they hoped would send their opponents running beneath a
thick cloud of tear gas. To create this cloud, nearly 20,000 shells were filled with teargas and
unleashed on the Russian positions west of Warsaw. Unfortunately for the Germans, however, they
did not take into account the frigid conditions that occur in Central Poland in July, and most of the
gas froze, the shells harmlessly falling to earth amongst a bewildered Czarist force. In light of the
developments on the Eastern Front, as well as the fact that xylyl bromide was found to corrode
metals and thus posed a logistics nightmare for the men transporting the shells, the German army
began looking for alternatives and finally

'When You See Millions Of The Mouthless Dead'
Charles Hamilton Sorley was a Scottish born poet who fought as a captain in The Great War. Sorley
was well educated, attending Oxford University before enlisting in the war. He entered the war as a
lieutenant and quickly earned a promotion to captain. Sorley's last battle was the Battle of Loos,
where he was shot and killed, along with over 8,000 others. His body was never recovered, but his
kit was. Inside this soldier's kit were thirty–seven poems written during the war. One of the poems,
titled "When you see millions of the mouthless dead" instills the reader with the powerful realization
of impending death. This poem, at face value, can be taken as a basic "How To" guide for mourning
the loss of lives during war times. However, with further ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

When examining the narrator's character, knowing the setting of the poem, and the exact meaning of
all of the lines, it becomes clear that the narrator is not living at all. The constant use of the word
"you" in the poem can separate the narrator and the reader. This separation is emphasized in the last
lines of the poem, "Nor honour. It is easy to be dead. Say only this, 'They are dead.' Then add
thereto, 'yet many a better one has died before,'" in these lines, the narrator is speaking not only of
the millions of other casualties, but of himself. He is instructing the reader, potential mourners, not
to mourn. He is saying that there is no honor in his death because it is easy and the narrator
recognizes that death is inevitable. He notes that everyone who died before him experienced death
just as he has. Everyone before has been stripped of their humanity; therefore, it is not honorable of
him to do so. The narrator humbles himself by saying "Yet many a better one has died before," This
line hints at the theme of indifference about the war, Many British did not want to fight; they had no
issues with their enemy. This line suggests regret from the narrator; he wished that he were a better
soldier. He wished that he died honorably, for a cause he felt strongly about. However, he did not.
He died an "easy" death in a war that he has no strong feelings for. This lack of

Analysis Of The Book ' We Must Go '
"We must go," hissed Gollum, tugging at his masters cloak, attempting to get him to turn and follow
him towards the Dark land. "We mustn't stand here. Make haste!"
The hobbits walked slowly behind forcing Gollum to constantly be slowing his pace and look back
to make sure they were following him. Though this gave him time to think at least. In his mind the
thoughts of killing his nice master and the mean Samwise seemed to be grabbing hold. Gollum
turned his glowing eyes to look back at the weary hobbits. Sméagol took the thought away and
reminded Gollum of their promise. Their promise on the precious.

He was too blinded by fear to realize what they were. He groveled on the ground. He groveled for
however long it took for the sound to end. He quickly glanced at Frodo and Sam to find Frodos hand
slowly moving to his chest. "Does he haves the precious there?" Gollum thought. Suddenly Frodos
hand got forced back and grabbed something else. Gollum tried to make out what it was but quickly
pulled his head back between his arms as the sound of cloven footsteps trampling against the ground
started again.
The sounds stopped and Gollum shakily stood up in fear of more bad people still looking. Gollum
had somehow found himself on a ledge beneath the hobbits. He did not remember getting there but
he slowly crawled up the rocks to find Frodo and Sam standing. He spoke to them and they slowly
began the journey again. The path once again was being trod. After only a few minutes Gollum
turned and spoke, "Careful!" he whispered. "Steps. Lots of steps. Must be careful!"
The climb was long but not terrible for Gollum. Sadly, the Hobbits were not Gollum. Whenever
Gollum would look back the hobbits would be tripping over eachother and struggling to climb the
easy part of it. Finally Gollums arm outstretched to find somewhat flat ground as they got to the top

August 28th through August 30th, 1862 the second battle of Bull Run took place and it was another
one of the bloodiest battles in history. The Union and Confederate army again met up near Bull Run

General Pope's troops (McPherson, 71). General Pope requested backup from General McClellan,
but the help never came. This battle resulted in almost 14,000 Union casualties and about 8,000
Confederate casualties (McPherson 71). Along with the extravagant loos of men, the Union army

Examples Of Misinterpretation In Julius Caesar
Throughout our lives, we continually misinterpret events that happen to us. One can say
misinterpretation occurs because we are afraid of the truth. However, the simple answer is
misinterpretation is in human nature. For millions of years, people persistently misinterpret events
believing their opinions are always correct. This happens to the best of us, including the Trojans and
Julius Caesar. During the Trojan War, the Trojans received a giant wooden horse from the Greeks.
Believing the gift was given to them by the gods for winning the war, they accepted the present.
However, the Trojans purposely misinterpreted the gift since they wanted to believe they won the

He questions "what other oath than honesty to honesty engaged that this shall be, or we will fall for
it (II.i.126–128)?" According to Brutus, Caesar's assassination was for the good of Rome. Because
of this, the people would understand why this murderous act had to take place. However, this was
not so. After the killing of Julius Caesar, the Romans grow outraged with Brutus. In Antony's
speech, Antony constantly refers back to, "Yet Brutus says he [Caesar] was ambitious; and Brutus is
an honorable man (III.ii.94–95)." Eventually, Antony's speech causes Brutus to run away from
Rome because the commoners are motivated to kill Brutus and the Senators for assassinating their
beloved Caesar. Nearing the final scene, Brutus acknowledges he is losing the battle in Philippi.
Understanding he will be executed, he knows he cannot surrender to Antony and Octavius.
Therefore, the remaining option was to have Strato, another of Brutus' servants, kill him, which
Strato did. Thus, the beautiful life of Brutus was taken away from him because of one
misinterpretation. Believing the Romans sent the letters, Brutus decides to join the assassination of
Caesar. This, though, causes the commoners blaming Brutus for the death of Caesar and leading to

C. Diff Research Paper
Antibiotics have always been one of the most reliable drugs in medical history, making them a
saving grace for those who suffer from bacterial caused illnesses. Although many types of drugs are
used to cure diseases, are antibiotics actually capable of completely "curing" a patient? Many people
find antibiotics to be a reliable source when it comes to fighting of an infection, however, when
someone either overuses or misuses the prescription of antibiotics, harsh side effects may occur. One
of the main problems that comes with the abuse of antibiotics being the resistance of them for future
use. This becomes a major problem when further down the road a severe illness is accumulated by
someone, but cannot be treated due to the resistance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Gas Masks During World War I
On October 1914, Germany gassed Britain at Neuve Chapelle, but this did not have much impact.
Later, on 31 January 1915 the first biggest known gas attack was made by Germany to Russia. The
generals had calculated over 18,000 shells fired that had contained liquid xylyl bromide tear gas.
Because of the cold weather the liquid, instead of vaporizing, froze and did not get the best results
for Germany. Ever since then, countries are trying to make better poison gasses and to counter this,
countries have to make better, much more efficient gas masks. By 22 April 1915, Germany struck
again with poison gas but this time with chlorine. The wind helped get the chlorine to the French
territories. The Triple Entente, which is Great Britain, France, Russia claimed that what Germany
did was a violation of international law. Germany disagreed saying that the Hague treaty had only
banned chemical shells, not the use of gas projectors. On "The Second Battle of Ypres", it was
reported that 90 men died from gas poisoning in the trenches, out of the 207 near the dressing
stations forty six out of the fifty eight died almost immediately. The British expressed their anger

General of the state of Tennessee, with the military rank of Colonel. Next, he was nominated and
won the office of Attorney General of the Nashville District in Tennessee. Sam later resigned to

politicians in the time period, Sam Houston badly wounded General William A. White in a duel

Invention Of The Bagpipe
"This old, barbaric music has magic in it. It transforms the Gael. It reawakens in the depths of their
being, even in this century, impressions, moods, and feelings inherited from a wild untamed ancestry
for thousands of years, and thus gives them, more than strong wine, that strength of arm and that
endurance of soul which makes them invincible." What sort of music could playwright Michael
MacDonagh possibly be referring to? The bagpipe is probably one of the most controversial
instruments in the world. It is either greatly adored (as evidenced by MacDonagh's aforementioned
quote) or it is much abhorred. Take the following quote by renowned film producer Alfred
Hitchcock for example: "These are bagpipes. I understand the inventor of the bagpipes was inspired
when he saw a man carrying an indignant, asthmatic pig under his arm. Unfortunately, the man–
made sound never equalled the purity of the sound achieved by the pig." Though the bagpipe is most
often associated with Scotland, it is an instrument rich with history throughout many different parts
of the world. To begin, let us look at the earliest records of the bagpipe. Some mentions of
instruments similar to bagpipes are found on ancient Middle Eastern slabs. These early
documentations date all the way back to the year 1000 B.C. The ancient Romans were known to use
bagpipes. Some Roman coins depict the emperor Nero playing the pipes. Pipes were used long
before the addition of the bag. Perhaps the bag was invented to

Trench Warfare In World War One
World War 1 was not the last world war, but it might be considered the "war to end all wars"
because of the number of deaths, the trench warfare, the use of chemical weapons, advances in
weaponry and disease. Trench warfare had soldiers fighting hand to hand. This was one of the worst
types of fighting. Trench warfare resulted in huge losses of human life for small amounts of land.
Life in the trenches was horrendous. They had to sleep next to rats running around and bomb shells
going off. They said that sleep was impossible. Along with that fresh food was nonexistent. Then, on
top of all of that they went to attack and got greeted with murderous rounds of machine gun fire. A
French soldier described it as "the air being unbreathable and living hell with the injured crawling
while screaming." It was a "terrain of death" said a British soldier. ... Show more content on

OPERATION ANACONDA: JOINT OPERATION PLANNING ERRORS
Joint Operations After the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the Twin Towers, the United
States (US) declared a global war on terrorism. Afghanistan was the first battleground with
Operation ENDURING FREEDOM; US forces engaged enemy combatants in effort to deter, isolate
and destroy, terrorist networks. In the early stages, unified land operations consisted mostly of
special operation forces (SOF) with support of the US Airforce, US Navy, allies and Afghan
Security Forces (ASF). This early collation was a joint effort that proved successful during the early
phases of the operation. Engagement of enemy forces successfully deterred their operational
capabilities and efforts that pushed enemy forces into Shahi Kot Valley. This concentration of enemy
forces in Shahi Kot Valley fostered the development of Operation ANACONDA, a joint,
interagency, intergovernmental, multinational (JIIM) operation. The joint operations planning
process (JOPP), employed during the operational design failed to achieve the desired combat power
necessary for successful shaping operations and decisive action.
Challenges Gathering Accurate Intelligence The Combined Joint Task Force (CJTF) Mountain (10th
Mountain Division), was assigned command and control (C2) of Operation Anaconda. In early
2002, CJTF Mountain initiated the joint

World War I: A Total War
It has often been argued that the First World War was an example of a total war. In order to
understand whether World War I was a total war for the British Empire it is necessary to first define
what a total war is. According to the Oxford Dictionary total war can be defined as, "A war that is
unrestricted in terms of the weapons used, the territory or combatants involved, or the objectives
pursued, especially one in which the laws of war are disregarded." From this definition two
important characteristics of total war can be seen. First, a total war will be fought without
restrictions on the weapons used. This utilization of weapons will ignore previous laws and
agreements concerning the use of weapons. Second, a total war will ignore the ... Show more

This characteristic of total war is best exemplified by the British use of chemical weapons
throughout the First World War, particularly the use of poison gases. The use of poison gases was
deemed ethically troubling on the battlefield even before they were first weaponized. This can be
seen in the Hague Convention of 1899 which banned the use of "projectiles with the sole object to
spread asphyxiating poisonous gases." The main cause of this distaste likely relates to the terrifying
nature of chemical gas attacks. In the words of Palazzo, "war gases kill by denying their victims the
ability to breathe, a violation of man's most essential and instinctive functions." This distaste for the
weapons did not last long in the face of the First World War however. The German's were the first
nation to engage in chemical warfare, but the other nations quickly joined in on the use of chemical
weapons. The British first attempted to utilize gas weapons at the Battle of Loos in 1915, but the
result was an abysmal failure for the British forces. Despite this failure the British continued to
develop their chemical weapons capabilities. These weapons became an important component of
artillery barrages on all sides of the battlefield. The utilization of these weapons, which had been
banned in the Hague Convention of 1899 is a clear example of the British willingness to utilize any
weapon system available to them that would maximize their chances at winning the war. This is a
clear indication that the First World War was a total War for the

"Green" Incentives in Malaysia
Environmental sustainability is gaining much focus in the recent years as people are beginning to
strive for a balance between economic growth and sustainability. In fact, many developed countries
such as UK, Japan have implemented strict environmental policies to enhance the quality on the
environment and to preserve the sustainability of its resources. It is viewed that Malaysia's effort has
been marginal in achieving effective management of resources, pollution control and prevention of
environmental degradation.
Tax Incentives

TRANSPORTATION
In Budget 2009, 100% import duty and 50% exercise duty are given to franchise holders on new

WASTE RECYCLING
Solid waste is one of the environmental problems that are often overlooked by Malaysian. Due to
the increasing population and development, generation of solid waste continues to increase and it is
expected to reach about 30,000 tons per day in the year 2020. To promote waste recycling and
management, Malaysia introduced tax incentives in the form of Pioneer Status, Investment Tax

The Somme : The Darkest Hour On The Western Front
The Somme: The Darkest Hour on the Western Front by Peter Hart is a narrative describing the
battle at the Somme. It begins with a description of the war before for the action and the
preparations that took place to prepare for this battle. It progresses quickly then to the opening day,
with its goal of breaking through the German lines. The author then discusses the numerous battles
that occurred over this four and a half months long battle until the stalemate ending. The author then
offers an assessment of this brutal and futile military encounter; one of the bloodiest and deadliest
battles of all time. The author, Peter Hart, is a British military historian. He attended Liverpool
University, Crewe & Alsager College, and Liverpool Polytechnic. He is an oral historian and
currently directs the Imperial War Museum in London. He writes primarily about World War I and
has authored eight books about this period of war. The beginning, the first few chapters of Hart's
book, is about the war before the battle of the Somme. The British has for the most abandoned their
naval battle and moved into a battle over land that developed into a trench warfare system that
stretched from Switzerland to the North Sea. The Allies knew this could not remain as it was, and
developed a plan for stopping this war. That plan, according to Haig, was to wear down the enemy
and then send a massive amount of troops in to break through the enemy line and win the victory.
Finally, the plan was

Chapter 6 Of Fussel: Play Summary
Chapter 6 of Fussel opens up a new way of looking at the poem. One of the distinct ways is from the
first few pages of the chapter, which asserts how soldiers felt as if they were staring in a play
themselves, a play that was so sophisticated with all the costumes and the leading roles such as
Corporal, Lieutenant, and others that were so well coordinated to play their part, at least in most
cases. In addition to the characters the actual unraveling of the war really conveyed such ideas by
the rather surreal aspect of it, which ultimately really lead to a notion of unreality and created a view
of theater and an act as Major Pilditch recalls prior to the attack at Loos "A sort of new feeling of
unreality, as if I were acting on a stage" (p.192). Given the fact that many had no idea what it was to
be at war, they felt a sense of acting in the war in whatever way they were told to do so or role they

Anderson And Hemingways Use Of The First Person Essay
"It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."At one point in
his short story, "Big Two–Hearted River: Part II", Hemingway's character Nick speaks
in the first person. Why he adopts, for one line only, the first person voice is an interesting question,
without an easy answer. Sherwood Anderson does the same thing in the introduction to his work,
Winesburg, Ohio. The first piece, called "The Book of the Grotesque", is told from the
first person point of view. But after this introduction, Anderson chooses not to allow the first person
to narrate the work. Anderson and Hemingway both wrote collections of short stories told in the
third person, and the intrusion of the first person ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nick tries as hard as he can, but the fish snaps the line and escapes. Then, as Nick thinks about the
fate of the trout which got away, Hemingway writes, "He felt like a rock, too, before he started
off. By God, he was a big one.
By God, he was the biggest one I ever heard of." This sudden switch to first–person narration
is startling to the reader. Until this point Hemingway had solely used third person narration, but he
did it so well that the reader feels as one with Nick. It is not definite whether this is Nick or
Hemingway speaking. It could easily be either of the two.
Hemingway doesn't include, "he thought," or, "he said to himself," and so it
is unclear. The result is the same regardless. Using first person narration at this point serves to make
the story more alive, more personal. It jolts the reader into realizing the humanity of Nick; he is no
longer the object of a story but a real person. If Nick is making so much stir over it that he speaks
directly to the reader, he must feel passionately about it. Or if Hemingway is so moved by the size of
the trout that he exclaims at its size, I can only accept that Nick also feels this excitement.
The sudden intrusion of the first person narrator makes the story more complete and its only
character more life–like. It also brings the reader into the story as a listener. Sherwood Anderson's
collection of short stories, Winesburg,

The Pros And Cons Of Marxist Communism
I would like to start off this essay by first stating that it would be immensely hypocritical to call
myself a member of the proletariat or even a Communist. I, however, subscribe to the belief that
some of the writings in the Communist Manifesto, are indeed applicable. Which, in the long run
should be implemented in all liberal societies as a means to protect the working class peoples.
Marxist Communism, in it's most pure form, calls for the abolition of the old society (Pg 86) and
radical ruptures of traditionalist ideas" (Pg 87). In it's place, there must be a reinstatement of a new
communist society where all old ideals of capitalism or feudalism or any other "old conditions of
existence" (Pg 86) must be dissolved. In process of overthrowing the old society, Marx describes a
plethora of other problems of which the proletariat as well as the communist party must face. Within
the Manifesto are several different obstacles that haunt the struggle of the proletariat and the
Communists. The chief of such obstacles is the "battle of democracy" (Pg 88), which Marx claims it
to also be the "first step in revolution" (Pg 87).
In the following writing, I will explore the fundamental obstacles that Marx and Engels outlined in
the Communist Manifesto that stand in between the present and the not–so–distant communist
future. then explain why those other problems take a metaphorical back seat to the chief of all
obstacles standing in the way of the proletariat is bourgeois democracy.

Showing great potential from the day he arrives at basic training, Jack even practices after the

The Allied Powers of the First World War
I. Introduction
During the First World War (1914– 1918) The United Kingdom was one of the Allied Powers,
fighting against the Central Powers (the German Empire, the Austro–Hungarian Empire, the
Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Bulgaria).
In 1914, British Army did not have the power to fight a major war on the continent, and throughout
the course of military actions had to multiply in size fourteen times (Chandler/ Beckett 211). Nature
of the conflict that forced reorganization of the British Army, including raising one of the largest all–
volunteer militaries in history, creation of the Royal Air Force, and use of conscription, as well as
facing modern and far more brutal weapons resulted in tremendous changes in the British warfare.
British commanders, experienced in fighting small colonial wars, had to quickly adapt to a very
different set of circumstances.
The end of War marked a decline in the respect of authority. Economical effects of massive
casualties, during carnages like the Battle of the Somme (1916), became felt and evidences of
Generals' incompetence were brought to light (for example in 1927 publication of Lions Led by
Donkeys: Showing how victory in the Great War was achieved by those who made the fewest
mistakes by British Captain P.A. Thompson). The criticism intensified after the end of the Second
World War, when massive sacrifices of the previous war were put in perspective. Publication of
book like the Donkeys (1961) by Alan Clark or release of

World War I: Chemical Warfare
At the beginning of World War I, the use of chemical weapons was still very much taboo. Not only
did mankind have a universal aversion to the use of poison but there was also the 1899 Hague
Convention Respecting the Laws and Customs of War on Land that prohibited "poison or poisoned
weapons" as permissible in war (#Tucker, 2006).
As the war progressed and trench warfare led to virtual stalemates throughout the theater, the
aversion to chemical weapons and the legal ramifications were subordinated to the military
necessity of the gases (or at least the military necessity as judged by the German High Command).
The Germans were especially well suited to chemical warfare because there chemical industry was

However, they were cumbersome, the gases were hard to detect, and there were malfunctions so
large scale casualties were still common. Phosgene for instance had no effects for hours after
exposure and victims would not know they were exposed. One attack on February 21, 1916 against
French and British soldiers with Phosgene resulted in 750,000 casualties (#Hutchinson, 2003).
Additionally, certain chemicals could not be detected easily.
New gases continued to be developed and used. France and Britain produced blood agents which
attempted to inhibit the victims ability to absorb oxygen into the blood. These gases were not
terribly effective in battle. The most devastating new gas was Mustard Gas. This was developed as
to circumvent the newly invented gas helmet and affect exposed skin (#Tucker, 2006). It was first
used July 12–13, 1917 at Ypres Salient by the Germans. In the next six weeks the British suffered
9,000 casualties as a result of Mustard Gas (#Hutchinson,

It was not enough. In 1996, the United States Army investigated and substantiated allegations that
uniformed instructors at Aberdeen Proving Ground had sexually assaulted and raped female trainees
under their charge. In 2003, the United States Air Force Academy substantiated claims of rape and
sexual assault conducted by and against students at the Academy. In 2012, an investigative
documentary entitled The Invisible War, chronicled the problem of sexual assault and harassment

fight in trenches. Started from 1914 to 1918 throughout the war, over millions of soldier fought for
their country and died along a front hundreds of miles long in trenches which rarely move
backwards or forwards by more than a few hundred yards at a time. The life in trenches is very
dangerous, for as well as the clearly dangers during an attack, the front lines in trenches meant
constant exposure to surprise attack, grenade, sniping, shelling and gas attack or trench raid. The
soldier died not only by the bullets of machine gun, rifles, sniper or grenade but gas and shells that

The Development and Usage of Gas Warfare Essay
Gas warfare was first introduced in World War I and continued to be used throughout World War II.
It was most commonly used in the front lines, and was feared by many. Gas warfare was a very
effective war tactic. The effects of gases were unbearable, which is what caused them to be so
heavily feared. Luckily, by the time that World War II came about protective masks called, gas
masks had been invented. This resulted in a decrease of use in World War II compared to World War
I, however it did not totally destroy the effort ("Poison Gas and World War Two"). There were many
different purposes for gas warfare during World War I and II, gases could do anything from merely
disabling soldiers, to killing hundreds at a time. The reasoning ... Show more content on

Symptoms appear much more slowly from a skin dosage than from a respiratory dosage. Although
skin absorption great enough to cause death may occur in 1 to 2 minutes, death may be delayed for 1
to 2 hours. Respiratory lethal dosages kill in 1 to 10 minutes, and liquid in the eye kills almost as
rapidly." Although most gases are made to be lethal, some gases just inhabilitate soldiers for a period
of time, rather than killing them ("Chemical Warfare Weapons Fact Sheets – Tabun – GA Nerve
Agent"). There are many different types of gas, each is unique to producing its own symptoms and
effects. "The primary gases of World War I were Mustard, Phosgene, Chlorine, and a mix of
Chlorine and Phosgene gases" ("Research"). Mustard gas is probably the most commonly known.
Mustard gas was really painful because it caused the soldiers skin to blister. However, its symptoms
did not always appear right away. Some soldiers did not even realize they had been infected with it
until up to twelve hours later! One of the reasons it was so nasty was because it could transfer
through material onto the skin. It was given the nickname "King of Gases" because of how
commonly it was used. Another commonly used gas was Chlorine. Chlorine caused many deaths.
Even those who survived the original dose usually ended up dying later due to pneumonia. The
Chlorine gas caused acute bronchitis, and slowly suffocated those exposed to it.

The Invention Of The Dye Industry
During WWII there were many advancements in modern weaponry, the production of larger
weapons and faster planes allowed for devastation across the globe. Many of these weapons were
very effective and while the war trudged on as did the new technology that arose from the hellish
time. German forces, at this time, were on the frontlines in trenches as they tried to push back
British and French troops. Although Germany's armies were strong they still struggled to advance on
the British and French troops. Meanwhile in Germany, the dye industry was steadily producing
economic growth but, the German army had other plans. These plans would eventually change the
dynamic of war itself.
It was 1915, German forces grew tired and started to look for other ways to advance on British and
French troops. As stated before the dye industry was a great weapon. Except it wasn't the dye that
was used but a chemical used to create the dye, chlorine. The German army filled canisters of
chlorine and bought them to the battlefield. As they opened the canisters yellowish gas flowed from
the metal cases directly toward two French regiments. The French regiments watched as this gas
flowed toward them, before they knew it the gas had reached them. One by one French soldiers
started choking on the gas as their lungs filled with chlorine. As the gas melted the tissues of their
lungs French troops fell, all of them. Two French divisions were destroyed, in no time the gas had

The narrator's technique was pretty interesting to me where he puts together the story from the
beginning as we get to know both Kipling and Jack. We spend most of the time with both characters
as we see their interactions with the females in the house and listening to some speeches of Rudyard
Kipling about the war. We also watch scenes where the father does what it takes to get his son into
the military, while also watching how frustrated jack becomes as he fails his medical exams. We
further on see the rain–soaked battle that Jack leads one day after his 18th birthday. He is unskilled
and has a group of soldiers behind him who are full of fear. All of a sudden, Jack is gone, not only
from the film, but from their lives.
As jack goes missing, the whole family is covered with sadness and fear of the worst as they go
through thousands of pictures of wounded soldiers. The pictures they see shows them what exactly
the risk they took and how dangerous it is letting their son go to war. They look at the pictures one

At this point, Kipling becomes exhausted as they have been looking at the pictures over and over
again without any success. Carrie, the mother insists on looking at the pictures one more time,
hoping they will come across a picture of their beloved son. And so they do. Sadly, Jack is nowhere

it done in 1981. The story happens in 1863, when US civil war was in ongoing. Knowing the
potential amputation of his wounded leg, Union Army Officer Lieutenant John J. Dunbar turns
suicidal and rides a horse to attract the enemy during a strange standoff. His act of suicide has the
unexpected effect of rallying his comrades who win the battle later, thus, was misconstrued as
bravery and earns him sympathy and fatherly love from General Tipton ... Show more content on

Dunbar becomes a hero among the Comanche after he helps locate and hunt the buffalo on which
the life of Comanche depends. After being seen the larkishness with Two Socks, a older wolf who's
been named and befriended by Dunbar, he is given a Comanche name "Dances With Wolves" by
Kicking Bird who is a medicine man and wondering the reason of Dunbar's alone existence in the
deserted fort. Dances With Wolves is integrating into the Comanche with the help of Kicking Bird
who assigns Stands With A Fist to be the translator and teach Comanche language. Dances With
Wolves and Stands With A Fist fall for each other during that period of time.Dances With Wolves
later further helps the Comanche fight off the raid from Pawnee by providing weapons. But his
idyllic life ends when he tells Kicking Bird and Ten Bears, chief of the Comanche the inevitable
coming and invasion of white soldiers to their land. Then, Ten Bears decides to move the village to

Ending The Opioid And Heroin Problem Analysis
Society Must Do Its Part in Ending the Opioid and Heroin Problem As we entered the dim living
room we immediately noticed my uncle. He sat there on the ugly floral sofa looking lifeless. Today
was his twenty–fourth birthday and we had come over to celebrate. My mother and I brought over
cupcakes and streamers. Today was supposed to be a celebration of his life but he was so much
closer to death. My mom could tell how alone and scared he was without him even speaking. I
looked up at her and could see all the anger in her eyes. She wasn't mad at her only brother, instead
she was mad at heroin. That's what brought him to this state after all. My uncle is not the only
person that's been brought to this state. Its an epidemic and the only way to win the battle against
drugs and addiction is to support the government in finding a solution. ... Show more content on

Bruce Brandler is a man who lost his son to heroin. Brandler says in an article by the Los Angeles
Times, "I want to evaporate the myth that heroin addicts are just homeless derelicts, this epidemic
hit's everyone... I think my situation exemplifies that.". I think what Brandler meant by this is many
people have a certain image in their minds when they think about heroin addicts. This image is often
wrong simply because heroin addicts are now the people right in front of us. When society expects
all addicts to fit one description it often overlooks those that need

Personal Narrative Essay: The Origin Of Pokemon Go
This is weird, I thought to myself not too long ago, while I was standing at a urinal. While doing my
business in the loo I stumbled across a Pokemon Go idea that might just have exposed the location
of the enigmatic Mew. Mew's whereabouts finally revealed?
Since the app's launch, the fissure between the digital and the physical life has healed slightly.
Players can be seen walking the streets, device in hand, in search of Pokémon, whose presence is
discovered by a buzz. Libraries and sport stadiums become battle arenas. That train station where
you wait for your morning train becomes a Pokéball dispenser. The local park becomes a land
packed with creatures and gyms that can be defeated. The world became our stage.
The fun and health promoting app allows players to catch many pokemon to level up, give or a take
a few, it is known that there are around 142 Pokemon available to catch on the app. Including region
exclusives such as Kangaskhan in Australia , Farfetch'd in Asia and Tauros in America. Not to
mention extremely rare pokemon (maybe even unavailable) such as Mew, have sparked various
responses from players. Mew's whereabouts has been a mystery since the launch of Pokemon Go,
but certain theories may have just answered your questions. ... Show more content on

So if it's actually in the game, where on Earth could they be hiding? In Pokemon for the Game Boy,
players are able to discover a certain journal which is in the Pokemon Mansion. This journal

of Guyana in South America, in accordance to this

Benguet History

  • 1. Benguet History BENGUET HISTORY Early in the 19th century after the Spanish explorer Guillermo Galvey's report of his expedition, the Spanish government organized the mountain region into six commandancias politico militar", namely: Benguet in 1846, Lepanto in 1852, Bontoc in 1859, Amburayan in 1889, and Kayapa and Cabugaoan in 1891. The Province of Benguet, as now constituted, has portions which were parts of the Districts of Lepanto, Bontoc and Amburayan. The early commandancias were divided into rancherias. The commandancia of Benguet was divided into 41 rancherias, with La Trinidad as the capital. It was named in honor of Don Galvey's wife Trinidad. The American established civil government in Benguet by 1900. On August 13, 1908, Benguet became a sub–province of the Mountain Province together with Amburayan, Apayao, Bontoc, Ifugao, Kalinga and Lepanto. During the 1930s, mining companies began massive operations to work the gold mines in the area. This attracted many lowlanders to work and settle in the area, especially in towns surrounding the mines, including Itogon. During World War II, Benguet was the site of fierce battles fought by Igorot guerrillas and American forces to open up the western flank of the Japanese defenders during the final days of liberation in 1945. By authority of the President of the United States, the US Philippine Commission enacted Act No. 49 on November 23, 1900, establishing a civil government for the Province of Benguet. The officers of this government were a provincial governor, provincial secretary and a provincial inspector. All these officers shall reside and have their offices in the township of Baguio, which shall be the capital of the province. The governor shall be the chief executive of the province. Until such time as a treasurer shall be appointed for the province, the governor shall act as provincial treasurer, subject to the provisions of the general law. He shall also make known to the people of his province through proclamations or communications delivered to the presidents of each township, all general laws or governmental orders. Mr. H. P. • 3. The Accomplishments Of Sam Houston Contrary to the typical stereotypes of Texans, Sam Houston was much more than a drunkard and an excellent gunslinger. Although, he possessed these traits as well, Houston displayed a certain level of maturity, honor, and critical thinking that most men, or even women, at the time did not own. To assume Sam Houston was a one trick pony, or only skilled in one aspect merely because of his heritage and place of birth would be an understatement, as his father was a major . The tall, handsome troublemaker did not fit in with the standard expected of boys or men during his time, however, he is one of the most revered political figures not only in Texas's history, but also the history of the nation as a whole. Houston held numerous political ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After a few years of going to church with his family fervently on Sundays, fourteen year old Sam lost his father, which later on would describe as "Only one for passion, a military life" . In his early life, and for the rest of it, Sam Houston's reputation was that of a rebel and a troublemaker due to the problems he would get himself into. Subsequently, he did not work as hard or as fervently as his siblings during his childhood, whether it be on the family farm or the general store they owned in Maryland, and that particularly undesirable trait would follow him into his death. Sam ran away multiple times a child and young adult, finding himself among a new family separate to his own that he did not expect to become affiliated with. However so, he grew closer to this adopted family than his own, becoming an honorary member of this group; Houston became an honorary member of the three hundred person Cherokee tribe led by forty–five year old Chief Oo– loo–te–ka , whose name means "He who puts away the drum" in English. Houston himself stated he preferred the company of nature and the Indians to the tyranny of his brothers and did not return to his mother for more than a year later, regardless of his brother's pleading. Eventually, after he disappeared again for another two years after returning to his home, and he lived among the Cherokees for so long that Chief Oo–loo–te–ka adopted him as his ... His first major role was joining in the U.S Army and demonstrated that he was able to rise rapidly, personal qualities of openness and friendliness and also a determination of never throwing the towel. Houston also had the quality of being a noble person, willing to protect the people that practically raised him, the Cherokees. After leaving them, he was appointed agent in managing the removal of the tribe, but always seeking to protect them from any injustice. Another key individual in the live of Sam Houston is John Jolly( Chief Oo–loo–te–ka), because he became his adoptive father and was basically the one that taught him lessons that reached beyond Indian culture and Indian–white relations, he is the one that made Houston a person that favored peace over war. For Houston, life with Cherokees was "greatly to his own satisfaction and comfort" and it basically shaped his future. Margaret Lea was the third wife of Sam Houston. As he put it, he loved his wife "almost to madness". She was crucial in the life of Houston because she gave him happiness by loving him and having 8 children together. He was an exciting historical figure and war hero who was involved with much of the early development of our country and Texas. He was a soldier, lawyer, politician, businessman, and family man, whose name will be synonymous with nation heroes who played a vital part in the shaping of a young and prosperous country. Houston also was somewhat of a writer. His first newspaper column was written to defend the position of Indians and was published in The Arkansas Gazette under the name Tah–lohn–tusky. It was at this time he married a Native American named Tiana Rogers (second wife) in a Cherokee Indian ceremony. Sam Houston was an ambitious businessman also. He and several of his associates purchased the Grand Saline and the land surrounding it from the Osage children of A.P. Chouteau. Houston sold a "third interest" in his purchase of the Grand Saline for $6,500. Houston returns to Baker County, Tennessee and was at his mother's side when she dies. • 13. Chemical Warfare During The First World War Chemical Warfare in the First World War The First World War, while engulfing Europe with four years of death and destruction, also served as something of a testing ground, allowing nations to test and deploy the newest and most high tech weapons in their arsenals. It is from these experiences, on the bitter, mud drenched fields of Flanders, Eastern Europe, and elsewhere, that many technologies that shape the modern battlefield today, such as the air plane or the tank, were first put to use on a grand scale. It is here too, that another weapon was unleashed upon humanity for first time, but this one was deemed so sinister that the nations of the world near unanimously agreed to ban once the war ended. A weapon so awful that even today, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Its use, however, despite its non–lethality, served to set a dangerous precedent for the war. German planners wasted no time in developing their own incapacitating agents to retaliate with, and before long something of a chemical weapons arms race was underway. The German chemical response finally came that October, when British forces at Neuve Chapelle were hit with a wave of xylyl bromide, and apparently the Germans like what they saw. In January, they decided to turn their new weapon against the Russian army, in what they hoped would send their opponents running beneath a thick cloud of tear gas. To create this cloud, nearly 20,000 shells were filled with teargas and unleashed on the Russian positions west of Warsaw. Unfortunately for the Germans, however, they did not take into account the frigid conditions that occur in Central Poland in July, and most of the gas froze, the shells harmlessly falling to earth amongst a bewildered Czarist force. In light of the developments on the Eastern Front, as well as the fact that xylyl bromide was found to corrode metals and thus posed a logistics nightmare for the men transporting the shells, the German army began looking for alternatives and finally ... • 15. 'When You See Millions Of The Mouthless Dead' Charles Hamilton Sorley was a Scottish born poet who fought as a captain in The Great War. Sorley was well educated, attending Oxford University before enlisting in the war. He entered the war as a lieutenant and quickly earned a promotion to captain. Sorley's last battle was the Battle of Loos, where he was shot and killed, along with over 8,000 others. His body was never recovered, but his kit was. Inside this soldier's kit were thirty–seven poems written during the war. One of the poems, titled "When you see millions of the mouthless dead" instills the reader with the powerful realization of impending death. When examining the narrator's character, knowing the setting of the poem, and the exact meaning of all of the lines, it becomes clear that the narrator is not living at all. The constant use of the word "you" in the poem can separate the narrator and the reader. This separation is emphasized in the last lines of the poem, "Nor honour. It is easy to be dead. Say only this, 'They are dead.' Then add thereto, 'yet many a better one has died before,'" in these lines, the narrator is speaking not only of the millions of other casualties, but of himself. He is instructing the reader, potential mourners, not to mourn. He is saying that there is no honor in his death because it is easy and the narrator recognizes that death is inevitable. He notes that everyone who died before him experienced death just as he has. Everyone before has been stripped of their humanity; therefore, it is not honorable of him to do so. The narrator humbles himself by saying "Yet many a better one has died before," This line hints at the theme of indifference about the war, Many British did not want to fight; they had no issues with their enemy. This line suggests regret from the narrator; he wished that he were a better soldier. He wished that he died honorably, for a cause he felt strongly about. However, he did not. Later, on 31 January 1915 the first biggest known gas attack was made by Germany to Russia. The generals had calculated over 18,000 shells fired that had contained liquid xylyl bromide tear gas. Because of the cold weather the liquid, instead of vaporizing, froze and did not get the best results for Germany. Ever since then, countries are trying to make better poison gasses and to counter this, countries have to make better, much more efficient gas masks. By 22 April 1915, Germany struck again with poison gas but this time with chlorine. The wind helped get the chlorine to the French territories. The Triple Entente, which is Great Britain, France, Russia claimed that what Germany did was a violation of international law. Germany disagreed saying that the Hague treaty had only banned chemical shells, not the use of gas projectors. On "The Second Battle of Ypres", it was reported that 90 men died from gas poisoning in the trenches, out of the 207 near the dressing stations forty six out of the fifty eight died almost immediately. It reawakens in the depths of their being, even in this century, impressions, moods, and feelings inherited from a wild untamed ancestry for thousands of years, and thus gives them, more than strong wine, that strength of arm and that endurance of soul which makes them invincible." What sort of music could playwright Michael MacDonagh possibly be referring to? The bagpipe is probably one of the most controversial instruments in the world. It is either greatly adored (as evidenced by MacDonagh's aforementioned quote) or it is much abhorred. Take the following quote by renowned film producer Alfred Hitchcock for example: "These are bagpipes. I understand the inventor of the bagpipes was inspired when he saw a man carrying an indignant, asthmatic pig under his arm. Unfortunately, the man– made sound never equalled the purity of the sound achieved by the pig." Though the bagpipe is most often associated with Scotland, it is an instrument rich with history throughout many different parts of the world. To begin, let us look at the earliest records of the bagpipe. Some mentions of instruments similar to bagpipes are found on ancient Middle Eastern slabs. These early documentations date all the way back to the year 1000 B.C. The ancient Romans were known to use bagpipes. Some Roman coins depict the emperor Nero playing the pipes. • 39. World War I: A Total War It has often been argued that the First World War was an example of a total war. In order to understand whether World War I was a total war for the British Empire it is necessary to first define what a total war is. According to the Oxford Dictionary total war can be defined as, "A war that is unrestricted in terms of the weapons used, the territory or combatants involved, or the objectives pursued, especially one in which the laws of war are disregarded." From this definition two important characteristics of total war can be seen. First, a total war will be fought without restrictions on the weapons used. This characteristic of total war is best exemplified by the British use of chemical weapons throughout the First World War, particularly the use of poison gases. The use of poison gases was deemed ethically troubling on the battlefield even before they were first weaponized. This can be seen in the Hague Convention of 1899 which banned the use of "projectiles with the sole object to spread asphyxiating poisonous gases." The main cause of this distaste likely relates to the terrifying nature of chemical gas attacks. In the words of Palazzo, "war gases kill by denying their victims the ability to breathe, a violation of man's most essential and instinctive functions." This distaste for the weapons did not last long in the face of the First World War however. The German's were the first nation to engage in chemical warfare, but the other nations quickly joined in on the use of chemical weapons. The British first attempted to utilize gas weapons at the Battle of Loos in 1915, but the result was an abysmal failure for the British forces. Despite this failure the British continued to develop their chemical weapons capabilities. These weapons became an important component of artillery barrages on all sides of the battlefield. The utilization of these weapons, which had been banned in the Hague Convention of 1899 is a clear example of the British willingness to utilize any weapon system available to them that would maximize their chances at winning the war. It begins with a description of the war before for the action and the preparations that took place to prepare for this battle. It progresses quickly then to the opening day, with its goal of breaking through the German lines. The author then discusses the numerous battles that occurred over this four and a half months long battle until the stalemate ending. The author then offers an assessment of this brutal and futile military encounter; one of the bloodiest and deadliest battles of all time. The author, Peter Hart, is a British military historian. He attended Liverpool University, Crewe & Alsager College, and Liverpool Polytechnic. He is an oral historian and currently directs the Imperial War Museum in London. He writes primarily about World War I and has authored eight books about this period of war. The beginning, the first few chapters of Hart's book, is about the war before the battle of the Somme. The British has for the most abandoned their naval battle and moved into a battle over land that developed into a trench warfare system that stretched from Switzerland to the North Sea. In addition to the characters the actual unraveling of the war really conveyed such ideas by the rather surreal aspect of it, which ultimately really lead to a notion of unreality and created a view of theater and an act as Major Pilditch recalls prior to the attack at Loos "A sort of new feeling of unreality, as if I were acting on a stage" (p.192). Anderson And Hemingways Use Of The First Person Essay "It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."At one point in his short story, "Big Two–Hearted River: Part II", Hemingway's character Nick speaks in the first person. Why he adopts, for one line only, the first person voice is an interesting question, without an easy answer. Sherwood Anderson does the same thing in the introduction to his work, Winesburg, Ohio. The first piece, called "The Book of the Grotesque", is told from the first person point of view. But after this introduction, Anderson chooses not to allow the first person to narrate the work. Anderson and Hemingway both wrote collections of short stories told in the third person, and the intrusion of the first person ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nick tries as hard as he can, but the fish snaps the line and escapes. Then, as Nick thinks about the fate of the trout which got away, Hemingway writes, "He felt like a rock, too, before he started off. By God, he was a big one. By God, he was the biggest one I ever heard of." This sudden switch to first–person narration is startling to the reader. Until this point Hemingway had solely used third person narration, but he did it so well that the reader feels as one with Nick. It is not definite whether this is Nick or Hemingway speaking. It could easily be either of the two. Hemingway doesn't include, "he thought," or, "he said to himself," and so it is unclear. The result is the same regardless. Using first person narration at this point serves to make the story more alive, more personal. It jolts the reader into realizing the humanity of Nick; he is no longer the object of a story but a real person. If Nick is making so much stir over it that he speaks directly to the reader, he must feel passionately about it. Or if Hemingway is so moved by the size of the trout that he exclaims at its size, I can only accept that Nick also feels this excitement. The sudden intrusion of the first person narrator makes the story more complete and its only character more life–like. It also brings the reader into the story as a listener. • 51. The Pros And Cons Of Marxist Communism I would like to start off this essay by first stating that it would be immensely hypocritical to call myself a member of the proletariat or even a Communist. I, however, subscribe to the belief that some of the writings in the Communist Manifesto, are indeed applicable. Which, in the long run should be implemented in all liberal societies as a means to protect the working class peoples. Marxist Communism, in it's most pure form, calls for the abolition of the old society (Pg 86) and radical ruptures of traditionalist ideas" (Pg 87). In it's place, there must be a reinstatement of a new communist society where all old ideals of capitalism or feudalism or any other "old conditions of existence" (Pg 86) must be dissolved. In process of overthrowing the old society, Marx describes a plethora of other problems of which the proletariat as well as the communist party must face. Within the Manifesto are several different obstacles that haunt the struggle of the proletariat and the Communists. The chief of such obstacles is the "battle of democracy" (Pg 88), which Marx claims it to also be the "first step in revolution" (Pg 87). In the following writing, I will explore the fundamental obstacles that Marx and Engels outlined in the Communist Manifesto that stand in between the present and the not–so–distant communist future. then explain why those other problems take a metaphorical back seat to the chief of all obstacles standing in the way of the proletariat is bourgeois democracy. ... What Is Baileyard's View Of War The movie My Boy Jack tells the story of Jack Kipling, son of renowned author Rudyard Kipling, and his journey toward becoming a highly respected officer in the Irish Guards. Rudyard, who has encouraged Jack to joined the armed forces, is furious that his son has been refused. Rudyard believes in the strength and power of the United Kingdom, saying that Britain has built up a "family of nations" and it is their patriarchal duty to protect them. Showing great potential from the day he arrives at basic training, Jack even practices after the workday is done to improve his shooting skills. • 55. The Allied Powers of the First World War I. Introduction During the First World War (1914– 1918) The United Kingdom was one of the Allied Powers, fighting against the Central Powers (the German Empire, the Austro–Hungarian Empire, the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Bulgaria). In 1914, British Army did not have the power to fight a major war on the continent, and throughout the course of military actions had to multiply in size fourteen times (Chandler/ Beckett 211). Nature of the conflict that forced reorganization of the British Army, including raising one of the largest all– volunteer militaries in history, creation of the Royal Air Force, and use of conscription, as well as facing modern and far more brutal weapons resulted in tremendous changes in the British warfare. British commanders, experienced in fighting small colonial wars, had to quickly adapt to a very different set of circumstances. The end of War marked a decline in the respect of authority. Economical effects of massive casualties, during carnages like the Battle of the Somme (1916), became felt and evidences of Generals' incompetence were brought to light (for example in 1927 publication of Lions Led by Donkeys: Showing how victory in the Great War was achieved by those who made the fewest mistakes by British Captain P.A. Thompson). The criticism intensified after the end of the Second World War, when massive sacrifices of the previous war were put in perspective. Not only did mankind have a universal aversion to the use of poison but there was also the 1899 Hague Convention Respecting the Laws and Customs of War on Land that prohibited "poison or poisoned weapons" as permissible in war (#Tucker, 2006). As the war progressed and trench warfare led to virtual stalemates throughout the theater, the aversion to chemical weapons and the legal ramifications were subordinated to the military necessity of the gases (or at least the military necessity as judged by the German High Command). New gases continued to be developed and used. France and Britain produced blood agents which attempted to inhibit the victims ability to absorb oxygen into the blood. These gases were not terribly effective in battle. The most devastating new gas was Mustard Gas. This was developed as to circumvent the newly invented gas helmet and affect exposed skin (#Tucker, 2006). It was first used July 12–13, 1917 at Ypres Salient by the Germans. It was most commonly used in the front lines, and was feared by many. Gas warfare was a very effective war tactic. The effects of gases were unbearable, which is what caused them to be so heavily feared. Luckily, by the time that World War II came about protective masks called, gas masks had been invented. This resulted in a decrease of use in World War II compared to World War I, however it did not totally destroy the effort ("Poison Gas and World War Two"). Although most gases are made to be lethal, some gases just inhabilitate soldiers for a period of time, rather than killing them ("Chemical Warfare Weapons Fact Sheets – Tabun – GA Nerve Agent"). There are many different types of gas, each is unique to producing its own symptoms and effects. "The primary gases of World War I were Mustard, Phosgene, Chlorine, and a mix of Chlorine and Phosgene gases" ("Research"). Mustard gas is probably the most commonly known. Mustard gas was really painful because it caused the soldiers skin to blister. However, its symptoms did not always appear right away. Some soldiers did not even realize they had been infected with it until up to twelve hours later! One of the reasons it was so nasty was because it could transfer through material onto the skin. It was given the nickname "King of Gases" because of how commonly it was used. Another commonly used gas was Chlorine. Chlorine caused many deaths. Many of these weapons were very effective and while the war trudged on as did the new technology that arose from the hellish time. German forces, at this time, were on the frontlines in trenches as they tried to push back British and French troops. Although Germany's armies were strong they still struggled to advance on the British and French troops. Meanwhile in Germany, the dye industry was steadily producing economic growth but, the German army had other plans. These plans would eventually change the dynamic of war itself. It was 1915, German forces grew tired and started to look for other ways to advance on British and French troops. As stated before the dye industry was a great weapon. Except it wasn't the dye that was used but a chemical used to create the dye, chlorine. The German army filled canisters of chlorine and bought them to the battlefield. As they opened the canisters yellowish gas flowed from the metal cases directly toward two French regiments. The French regiments watched as this gas flowed toward them, before they knew it the gas had reached them. One by one French soldiers started choking on the gas as their lungs filled with chlorine.
