WRITING
TEACHER KUMUTHA
CHUNG HUA HIGH SCHOOL SEREMBAN
Practice (Pg65, UEC Workbook) Passage (Pg57-58)
Read the passage on ‘Science Has Gone Too Far’
and summarise it in a 150-word continuous essay.
Credit will be given for the use of own words. State,
in brackets, the number of words you have written.
In your summary, you must include the following
points.
A. How people perceive Science
B. The positive and negative impacts of Science
(perceptions)
(Good and bad effects)
Human beings everywhere seem to look to science as
miracle problem-solver in a world beset with problems
and therefore science is placed on a high,
unquestionable pedestal. (pg57, para 1-line 4,5,6)
(Perception)
Human beings everywhere seem to look to science as
miracle problem-solver in a world beset with problems
and therefore science is placed on a high,
unquestionable pedestal.
(Perception)
 People perceive science as miracle problem-solver.
Hence, it is placed on a high, undeniable pedestal.
This opened up the possibility that exact copies of
animals and plants can be made through cloning
technology. (Pg57, para 3-line 3-5)
(Positive impact)
 Science has opened up the chance of cloning
copies of animals and plants.
 Science has initiated the opportunity of cloning
copies of animals and plants.
Many moral issues are, however, involved in cloning.
…should human beings play God? … Another concern is that
cloning is not a natural reproductive process and it results in
lesser genetic diversity that has been a factor of survival and
adaptation. (Pg57&58, para 3, line 5&6, 11&12)
 A lot of moral issues such as human beings as God,
unnatural reproductive process and lesser genetic
diversity, are concerned in cloning.
(Negative impact)
(Positive impact)
 Scientific developments ultimately influence the
production lines of factories.
Scientific breakthroughs eventually end up in the
production lines of factories (Pg58, para 4, line 2-3)
(Negative impact)
This seems to give people the impression of a vicious
circle in which a problem is solved but a new one
created and the problem-solving process has no end
in view. (Pg58, para 4, line 6-8)
 The problem-solving process has no end.
(Positive and negative impact)
Genetically modified foods may help to boost the yield of
crops and tackle the problem of hunger to some extent, but
it also brings a host of other problems about safety, possible
allergic reaction to GM foods, and hazards to the
environment. (Pg58, para 4, line 8-11)
 Genetically modified foods help improve yields/produce
food and solve the problem of hunger, but other
problems such as safety, allergic reaction, dangers to the
environment also occur.
(Positive and negative impact)
Science and technology have probably brought about
greater materialistic wealth but at a high
environmental cost. (Pg58, para 5, line 1-2)
 Science and technology may bring wealth, but may
destroy the environment.
(Positive and negative impact)
Ironically, science has directly brought about these
modern diseases; it also plays the role of turning
out new drugs or supplement to rectify the
situation. (Pg58, para 5, line 5-7)
 While science has brought modern diseases, it
turns the new drugs to remedy the situation.
SUMMARY
People perceive science as a miracle problem-saver. Hence, it is always
placed on high, undeniable pedestal. One of the major positive impacts of science
is it has opened up the possibility of cloning copies of animals and plants.
However, several moral issues such as human beings as God, unnatural
reproductive process and lesser genetic diversity, involve in cloning. Besides,
scientific developments also largely influence the production lines of factories. Yet,
the problem-solving process has no end in view. Other than that, genetically
modified foods may help produce food and solve the problem of hunger, but other
problems such as safety, allergic reaction, hazards to the environment also occur.
Subsequently, science and technology may bring wealth, but may destroy the
environment. Despite the fact that science has brought modern diseases, it turns the
new drugs to remedy the situation. (147 words)
WRITING
Practice (Pg65)
Write a composition of not less than 350 words
on one of the following topics.
1. Science has done more harm than good. Do you agree?
2. Discipline problems in school.
3. Should there be school during weekends as well? Discuss.
4. Why reality shows such as ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’ and
‘Amazing Race’ are popular?
5. Compare and contrast the influence of celebrities and parents on
students.
Science has done more harm than
good. Do you agree? (Disagree)
Treats various disorders
- using the right medication and surgical methods.
Antibiotics have become the biggest life saver,
vaccination is the best preventative method of
potentially fatal illnesses and most importantly
surgical procedures can be done with no pain
through anesthesia.
- Medicine is the science and practice of the
diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
Improves the quality of life
The quality of life has improved with electricity.
Society has a safe source of light; electricity replaced
gas lamps and fires and eliminated accidents that may
have been occurred because of this. It has made
refrigeration possible and because of this food lasted
longer, food safety improved and food transportation
has become easier. The industrialization has
improved; dangerous jobs that were done manually
were now done with machines. Various forms of
communication stemmed from electricity such as the
telegraph, telephone and television.
- Technology (smart phones, computers and internet)
has made our lives better.
New scientific discoveries
E.g. the discovery of the structure of DNA was a
fundamental breakthrough in biology. It formed the
basis of research that would ultimately lead to a wide
variety of practical applications, including DNA
fingerprinting, genetically engineered crops and tests
for genetic diseases.
DNA copying and sequencing technologies discover
relationships among organisms.
Science has been playing significant role in
our daily lives. I strongly disagree that science
has done more harm than good because it has
improved the quality of our lives, treated various
disorders and exposed new scientific discoveries.
Thesis statement
Science has a major impact on society and its impact
is growing. It is drastically changing our means of
communication, the way we work, our housing,
clothes, food and our methods of transportation, and,
indeed, even the length and quality of life itself.
However, it has also placed us in the unique position
of being able to destroy ourselves in a way of
contributing to wars and global warming as well as
promoting unhealthy activities. Therefore, I strongly
agree that science has done more harm than good.
Science has been finger pointed for causing
wars. Scientists discovered mass weapons of
destruction which are being used to kill
people.
Science has done more harm
than good. Do you agree?
(Agree)
Science inventions like motor cars,
refrigerator, air conditioner and factories
destroy the ozone layer, which contributes to
global warming.
The advancement of science promote
unhealthy activities
- e-cigarettes
- pornographic

Problems in
School
Factors
Problems
Ways to
overcome
• Disrespect
• Bullying
• Aggressio
n
• Lack of discipline, guidance and
care
• Peer influence
• Media influence
• Community
• Create and enforce
schoolwide discipline
plan
• Increase parental
involvement
• Keep students
engaged
Gives more time of learning
- focus more
- Extra curricular activities
Students will be connected with
the teachers more.
- Develop good rapport Teachers and students need break
– Time to relax
- Family time
- Space for social life and entertainment
Chances of getting exposure to other
skills (gardening, plumbing, cooking)
Should there be school
during weekends as
well? Discuss.
• Competitive In Nature
People who have a competitive nature are more likely to
watch reality televisions shows in a similar way that people
enjoy watching sports. (The Bachelor, So You Think You Can
Dance, American Idol, Project Runway, Survivor, The Voice,
America’s Next Top Model, Top Chef etc).
Why reality shows such as
‘Who Wants to Be a
Millionaire’ and ‘Amazing
Race’ are popular?
• Source of inspiration
It can make people feel better about themselves on many
occasions. People like to watch others who are successful.
- Everyone wants to live a luxurious life and therefore want
to see how other people live that sort of life.
- It is human nature to see what other people have and to
want it.
- The drama that these shows
provide (the numerous fights
and confrontations) definitely
sparks the interest of the
viewers.
- the more drama and fighting
that a reality show has, the
more likely it is to be popular
and earn excellent ratings.
• The drama draws
attention
They share similarities in choices of lifestyle, effectiveness
through imitation, and qualities of influence. They contrast each
other in that they differ in physical distance, having one’s best
interest, and power of limiting.
Compare and contrast the influence of
celebrities and parents on students.
