What IS Recycled Carbon?
Defined as carbon-based
products such as fuel,
synthetic fibers, plastics, etc.
made from captured waste
carbon.
These waste gases are found
in emissions from large point
sources, such as a steel mill,
cement factory or biomass
power plant.

Captured carbon can theoretically be made
into any kind of fuel or chemical that is
currently based on petroleum.
The average global surface
temperature is rising and has
increased by about 0.74 deg
Celsius since the 1800s.
2014-2018 have been the 5
hottest years ever recorded.
The main cause of this warming
trend is all the carbon emissions
we keep pumping into the
atmosphere.

Retrofitting Brewery Technology
By retrofitting a special type
of brewery onto an emission
source like a steel mill or
landfill site, pollution can be
converted by bacteria to
fuels & chemicals.
Other biomass resources
include municipal solid waste,
organic industrial waste and
agricultural waste.

Example Product: Ethanol
Ethanol, aka alcohol, ethyl
alcohol, and grain alcohol, is a
clear, colorless liquid.
Uses of ethanol include:
•  Fuel – >98% of U.S. gasoline
contains ethanol (E10 blend)
•  A common ingredient in many
cosmetics & beauty products
•  Solvents for paints, lacquers,
varnish, and household cleaning
•  Food additive such as flavor of
food extracts (e.g. vanilla extract)

The global ethanol market is projected to
grow by US$49.8 billion, driven by a
compounded growth of 7.5%.
Carbon from waste gas
emissions can be recycled
and processed into jet fuel.
One such platform is the
‘alcohol-to-jet’ (AtJ)
developed by LanzaTech. Via
a catalytic process, it can
upgrade ethanol to jet fuel.

2011 to pursue the use of low
carbon jet fuel in all its
commercial flights.
In October 2018, Virgin Atlantic
completed the first-ever
commercial flight using
LanzaTech’s jet fuel from
Orlando to London Gatwick,
operated by a Boeing 747.

Synthetic fibers are made
through chemical synthesis.
Examples include nylon and
polyester.
Basically, recycled carbon
can be processed to become
synthetic fibers, which will
eventually be used to make
fabrics for a variety of uses.
