3. Fingerprint Recognitions
Recognize the identity by analyzing fingerprint
- Narrow sense
- Automated method of verifying a match between two human fingerprints
- Fingerprints are one of many forms of biometrics used to identify individuals and verify their identity.
Fingerprint recognition in electronic devices
- 1st smartphone manufacturer to integrate fingerprint recognition: 2011
4. Components
Three basic patterns of fingerprints analysis : Arch, Loop, Whorl
3 primary functions :
- Enrollment
Captures fingerprint image from the sensor
- Searching
A reason is that the way people put their fingerprints on a mirror to scan can affect to the result in the
searching and verifying process
- Verification
Several techniques to match fingerprints
Most popular: Minutiae based matching algorithm → Efficient
5. Types
Optical Sensor
- Capturing a digital image of the print using
visible light.
- This type of sensor is, in essence, a
specialized type of digital camera.
- Not susceptible to electrostatic discharge
damage
- Fingerprints can be read from a distance
Ultrasonic Sensor
- Make use of the principles of medical
ultrasonography in order to create visual
images of the fingerprint.
- Use very high frequency sound waves to
penetrate the epidermal layer of skin.
6. Types
Capacitance Sensor
- Use principles associated with capacitance
in order to form fingerprint images.
- Apple's Touch ID uses a capacitive
fingerprint sensor
- Passive capacitance sensor:
Use the principle outlined above to form an
image of the fingerprint patterns on the
dermal layer of skin.
- Active capacitance sensors:
Use a charging cycle to apply a voltage to
the skin before measurement takes place
7. Applications
Voter registration and identification
- Check authenticity of voter
- Authorize legitimate voters to vote
-Avoid double vote casting by any individual
8. Applications
Border control via passport verification by using biological parameters
- Verify the identity or check against other entries in the database
- Reduce use of stolen and counterfeit visas
- Protect against possible use by terrorists
- E channel in Hong Kong
9. Applications
Population census by using biometrics
- Nigeria is a country that is embracing biometric technology
- Prevent people from gaining advantage through manipulation of the Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD)
- Calculate the population size, distribution and characteristics
- Effective economic planning
- Judicious use of relatively scarce resources
10. Applications
Driver’s license and professional ID card verification with biometric identifiers
- Tracking and apprehending known or suspected terrorists
- Reduce fraud and identity theft
- Invasion of privacy
11. Online Survey
An online survey has done to investigate how much do people know about fingerprint recognition.
Several Questions are asked:
1. Gender
2. Smartphones brand
3. Methods of unlocking their phones
4. Knowledge on usage of fingerprint recognition
5. Attractions of fingerprint recognition
12. v
More than half of the respondents are
female(63.6%) while only 36.4% are male.
As technology is getting more advanced,
all respondents (100%) have their own
smart phones.
13. From the data, respondents who are
using Iphone occupies the most(50%)
while the second most is
Samsung(36.4%).
More than 80% of the respondents use
fingerprint recognition to unlock their
phones while only 13.6% of them use
passcode.
14. All of the respondents know fingerprint can use in unlocking the phone while 77.3% of
respondents know it can use to purchase online apps. The third most common is using
fingerprint to log in personal accounts. However, only a few people know fingerprint can use
to secure your phone records and sign sensitive documents.
15. 16 people never heard of any terms about fingerprint recognition. This indicates many
people use fingerprint but have little knowledge on how it actually works. However, only 4
people know what ultrasonic scanner is and one person know cryptography and optical
fingerprint scanners for each.
16. The most attractive reason is “you can’t misplace your fingerprint” which has 72.7% voted.
Also. high security is also the other attractive reason among them.
Overall, fingerprint recognition is getting more common due to its convenience and security.
However, people have little knowledge on it.
18. Conclusion
Positive
- Convenient
- Secure
- More common and developing in different
aspect around us
Negative
- Fingerprints can't be changed
- Number of fingerprints per person is
limited (10 fingers)
- Can't verify identity when the fingers get
wet
- Some fingerprints are difficult to verify
(esp. elderly and children)
