3. What is car jack and what is the use of it?

4. How it works.?
A car jack uses hydraulic or mechanical force to lift vehicles. Jacks using hydraulic
force depend on pressure. A pump plunger takes oil through two cylinders. When
pushed back, the plunger opens the suction valve and forces the oil into the pump
chamber.
6. History of car jack
The history of the hydraulic jacks can be dated many years ago when French
mathematician and philosopher by the name Blaise Pascal illustrated the principle
of hydraulic jack in the 17th century. Later in 1795, Joseph Bramah the British
engineer obtained a Patent for certain new methods of producing and application
of more power to all machinery that requiring motion and force, and this involved
the first hydraulic press. Richard Dudgeon incorporation started in New York as a
machine shop and on July 8, 1851,inventor, and founder Richard Dudgeon was
awarded a patent for ‘portable hydraulic press’.These jacks were operated by
water or any other fluids as whiskey and whale oil; the heads device was the
location for fluid reservoir. During the winter, other liquids tend to freeze and
thicken hence the most applied fluid was whiskey and the name Whiskey Jack
came into existence.
8. Richard dudgeon(1851-1855)
The origin of hydraulic jacks may be dated several years ago when Richard
Dudgeon, the inventor of hydraulic jacks, started a machine shop. In the year 1851,
he was granted a patent for his hydraulic jack. In the year 1855, he literally amazed
on lookers in New York when he drove from his abode to his place of work in a
steam carriage. It produced a very weird noise that disturbed the horses and so its
usage was limited to a single street.

The first hydraulic car lift was patented by Peter Lunati. he had a Patent B66F7/18
Lifting frames, for lifting vehicles; Platform lifts with platforms supported directly
by the jacks by one or more hydraulic or pneumatic jacks by a single central jack.
11. 1945(AUTOMOTIVE LIFT INSTITUTE)
By 1945, there were so many companies making hydraulic lifts for the motor
vehicle industry. In the Us, 9 lift manufacturers formed the Automotive Lift
Institute (ALI). ALI was created to further improving the quality of automotive lifts.
These companies shared concerns over the availability of steel and other raw
materials used to produce automotive lifts since these materials remained under
government allocation. At the same time, high-grade steel, required for machined
pistons and cylinders and for forming superstructure components, was in short
supply and as a result, scrap steel of questionable quality was being reprocessed
to manufacture some lifts. As a result, ALI was concerned about the quality of
vehicle lifts produced and the safety of the lift operator.

A pneumatic jack is a hydraulic jack that is actuated by compressed air - for
example, air from a compressor - instead of human work. This eliminates the need
for the user to actuate the hydraulic mechanism, saving effort and potentially
increasing speed. Sometimes, such jacks are also able to be operated by the
normal hydraulic actuation method, thereby retaining functionality, even if a source
of compressed air is not available.

Pneumatics is a branch of technology that deals with the study and application of
pressurized gas in affecting mechanical motion. In this project “Mechanical Project
Report on Centre Jack for Cars” is designed to make a pneumatic jack that can lift
a complete car or an automobile when placed at the car’s bottom. These systems
are mainly used in industries, factories and are generally plumbed with
compressed air.
The preference for pneumatic systems is because a centrally and electrically
powered compressor is used to power cylinders through solenoid valves and
provides motion in a cheaper and flexible mode. The best point of the project is
that it can drive a complete system with the aid of compressed air without any part
of the automobile touching the ground.

In this project Automatic jack for cars, a compressor is used. This compressor
consists of a pump which compresses air, increasing the pressure and gives it to
the pneumatic system. The check valve allows the pressurized air to get inside the
pneumatic system and also prevents backflow, once it is stopped.
The compressed air is stored in the accumulator and prevents pressure surges and
restarts the duty cycle. To control the pressurized air from source, a directional
valve is used for control. An actuator is used in the project to transform the energy
of compressed air into mechanical motion. The alternate tools are rotary actuators
and air tools.

the most common type. Reciprocating compressors lap be had is sizes from the smallest
capacities to deliver more than 500m3/min.In single stage compressor, the air pressure may
be of 6 bar machines discharge of pressure is up to 15 bars.Discharge pressure in the range
of 250 bars can be obtained with high pressure reciprocating compressors that of three &
four stages. Single stage and 1200 stage models are particularly suitable For applications,
with preference going to the two stage design as soon as the discharge pressure exceeds 6
bars, because it in capable of matching the performance of single stage machine at lower
costs per driving powers in the range.

The directional valve is one of the important parts of a pneumatic system.
Commonly known as DCV; this valve is used to control the direction of air flow in
the pneumatic system. The directional valve does this by changing the position of
its internal movable parts.
This valve was selected for speedy operation and to reduce the manual effort and
also for the modification of the machine into automatic machine by means of using
a solenoid valve.
A solenoid is an electrical device that converts electrical energy into straight line
motion and force. These are also used to operate a mechanical operation which in
turn operates the valve mechanism. Solenoid is one is which the plunger is pulled
when the solenoid is energized.

29. Working principle of solenoid valve
The solenoid valve has 5 openings. These ensure easy exhausting of 5/2Valve.the
spool of the 5/2 valve slide inside the main bore according to spool position: the
ports get connected and disconnected
The working principle is as follows.
Position-1
When the spool is actuated towards outer direction port „P‟ gets connected to „B‟
and „S‟ remains closed while „A “gets connected to „R‟.

When the spool is pushed in the inner direction port „P‟ and „A‟ Gets connected to
each other and „B‟ to „S‟ while port „R‟remains closed.
31. Flow control valve
In any fluid power circuit, flow control valve is used to control the speed of actuator.
The flow control can be achieved by varying the area of flow through which the air
in passing.
When area is increased, more quantity of air will be sent to actuator as a result its
speed will increase. If the quantity of air entering into the actuator is reduced, the
speed of the actuator is reduced.

polyurethane. These hose can withstand at a maximum
pressure level of 10 x105N/m2.
34. Working principle
The working medium adopted is compressed air. The compressed air is transmitted through tubes to
pneumatic cylinder where power is converted into reciprocating motion. The reciprocating motion is
obtained by using an electrically controlled solenoid valve. The input to the solenoid valve is given through
the control unit. The reciprocating motion transmitted to the jack through the piston which moves on the
cylinder. The jack is placed under the vehicle chassis, where the vehicle to be lifted. The vehicle can be lifted
when the solenoid valve is switched. The vehicle over the jack gets the reciprocating motion through the
piston which is connected to the jack. Thus using a pneumatic jack the vehicle can be lifted with ease in
operation.
35. FACTORS DETERMINING THE CHOICE OF MATERIALS
The various factors which determine the choice of material are discussed below

Compressive shear, bending, torsional and buckling load, fatigue resistance, impact resistance, elastic limit,
endurance limit, and modulus of elasticity, hardness, wear resistance and sliding properties.

maintaibility in automobile industries for service of any car in very less time.the use
