The Calabar Angwantibo Lemus
The Calabar Angwantibo's scientific name is Arctocebus calabarensis.
The Calabar Angwantibo likes to live in the rainforests of west Africa.
Their back is orange–yellow, and their belly is grey or white. The Calabar Angwantibo has a white strip that goes from the tip of their nose to their
forehead. Many people think they are beautiful. The Calabar Angwantibo is the world's only primate that has a third eyelid. They will weigh 9.38 to
16.4 ounces.
They like to live in the lower part of the trees. During the day, the Calabar Angwantibo likes to sleep in tree branches. They will hunt for food at night.
The male Calabar Angwantibo prefers to hunt for food alone. They eat insects, and they prefer caterpillars.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
None had been seen since 1875 and in 1966 they were found again.
The Hairy–eared Dwarf Lemurs forest habitat has been cut down, and they are trapped for food. They are considered endangered and at risk of
extinction.
The Weasel Lemur The weasel lemur is found living in Madagascar. They like to live in wet forests.
The weasel lemur is 2 feet long including their tail which is quiet long. Their fur on their back is a reddish–brown. Their belly has fur on it that is
grayish.
The weasel lemur will be active at night. They like to live in trees and they are great at jumping from tree to tree. At times they will descend to the
ground. In the day time they like to sleep in tree holes. The male weasel lemur will live alone and the females will live with their young. During
mating season the males will live with the females for a short time.
The weasel lemur eats leaves mainly. They will also eat fruit, bark and flowers.
The weasel lemur is preyed on by snakes, eagles, fossa and

Jumping Spider Quotes
Once the emotion because of the dikencingi frog? Or scratching your head because a Grasshopper who used to chase you to feed the birds suddenly
disappeared just when resting in a tree? Yes, that is how God created the creatures. They have always provided the unique techniques for hiding or
fleeing from a predator.
Each animal had its own unique coping mechanisms and not the same. Some classified as simple as using speed or sound, but some are using the
technique of super genius. For example by mimicking other animal or take advantage of the superiority of his body to escape. Well, whatever the heck
that animal had a technique of super genius? Following his review.

A research done to prove it. The first two were placed in a glass container and then observed the pattern. Turns out it's true, the moths these cool directly

The Guam Rail Should Be Saved from Possible Extinction Essay
The Guam Rail or Ko'ko bird is a flightless bird which was endemic to Guam. The Guam Rail is mostly brown with white stripes on its stomach. It
grows up to a height of 30cm and is omnivorous. There used to be as many as 10,000 Guam Rails on the island and they were easily spotted.
However, during World War II, theBrown Tree Snake (Boiga irregularis) came to Guam and devastated native bird populations. The Guam Rail was
one of the native birds that were annihilated. In just 30 years, the Guam Rail population plummeted to just 21 birds. The Guam Rail is now extinct in
the wild. However, there are still some birds in captivity now. The Guam Rail should be preserved from possibleextinction.

The Guam Rail, as well as spreading seeds, also pollinates certain native plants. Without the Guam Rail and other native birds, pollination of these
plants will become rarer resulting in a drop in the population of those plants. These plants might even become extinct altogether. This could create a
domino–like effect that could become catastrophic for the ecosystem of Guam. Also, spider populations on Guam have skyrocketed in the past few
years. The population of native birds on Guam seems to be proportional to the number of spiders on Guam. As the number of Guam's native birds
decreased, spider populations have increased. This suggests that with fewer predators, the spiders have flourished. Haldre Rogers, a biology student,
says that "Guam appears to be swarming with spiders...The spiders used to be controlled by the birds, but now they, too, have few predators".
An example of a bird which has been successfully preserved from extinction is the Bald Eagle. Due to the extensive use of DDT, excessive hunting,
and loss of habitat, the Bald Eagle population in America plunged from around 400,000 in the 1700's to just 412 nesting pairs in the 1950's.
However, just by imposing regulations on hunting, and by banning DDT, the population has rebounded back to around 9789 breeding pairs in 2006.
That's 23 times more than 50 years ago. This proves how easy it can be to preserve endangered animals if the government commits to a plan. To

The Use of Color Symbolism by Nathaniel Hawthorne Essay
Is it possible for an author to utilize so much symbolism that it captivates the reader to the extent of paralleling the tale with their own life? The
principle of symbolism is quite evident in the story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, "Young Goodman Brown". Nathaniel Hawthorn's work is immersed with
symbolism with most of it deriving from his Puritan beliefs. The themes of sin, guilt, innocence, and lust come forth through the uses of color
symbolism as well as visual clues. All of these things are dealt with in everyday life in modern America. "His ability to create vivid and symbolic
images that embody great moral questions appears strongly in his short stories." (Bloom) To begin to understand the mind of Nathaniel Hawthorne you

The pink ribbons in Faith's hair are Hawthorne's way to captivate the reader's imagination. By doing so it makes the reader question as they are
reading whether or not Faith is as pure as she portrays to be. "Those celebrated pink ribbons on Faith's cap–the objects of an astonishing range of
responses by critics of the story are vital to an understanding of her metamorphosis and of Brown's desperate efforts to recover his faith." (Bloom)
As Goodman Brown enters into the forest Hawthorn utilizes once again the description of darkness to symbolize the forest as being a place of
evil doings. In the description of the staff that the old man held resembled that of a black snake. The use of the color black would indicate the
possibility of the staff being a symbol of something evil, but the addition of snake was sure to set the reader at full attention. A black snake is
what tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden in the Bible. Hawthorne utilized this color symbolism to warn of the evil doings or thoughts the older
traveler was involved in. After Goodman Brown was disappointed by hearing what the pastor and deacon of his church were talking about he began
to question God and if there truly was a heaven. As God does in our own lives he sent signals to reveal to Goodman Brown the love he has for
mankind. For Goodman Brown that was the blue arch and the sky filled with stars shining. During Brown's realization of "God's all knowing power"
Hawthorne then proves a point

Impact and Control of the Brown Tree Snake as an Invasive Species on Guam
by
Karen Myers
Introduction
"Invasive species are a rapidly growing problem, and in many areas, they are the second–most–important cause of species declines" (Perry & Vice,
2009, p. 993). Often times, the invasive problem is by accident due to transportation of the species, but at times is intentional. This paper will review
the history of the Brown Tree Snake as an invasive species, a species description of the Brown Tree Snake, and the impact this species has had on Guam

The time that would be spent on searching for ways to get rid of the snakes would be very costly and could cause a serious economic burden on
Hawaii (Burnett, Sittidaj, & Roumasset, 2011). Because of the history and background of the Brown Tree Snake and the negative impact it has
had on Guam, researchers are continuously looking for ways to control the ongoing threat it could have on other Pacific Islands. A description and
attributes of the Brown Tree Snake's species helps researchers in their efforts to find and control the invasion of the snake.
Species Description
"The Brown Tree Snake is one of about 1,800 species of modern snakes lumped into... the family of ''typical'' snakes... Boiga irregularis includes all
of the closely related brown Boiga found east and south from Sulawesi to Australia and the Solomon Islands, though various proposals have been
suggested to recognize locally distinctive forms" (Rodda, G. H., & Savidge, J. A., 2007, p. 307). "The species name irregularis recognizes the
diversity of morphology in the species" (Rodda & Savidge, 2007, p. 308). Brian K. Hall explained morphological species as "being a population
of individuals that share more characters (features) with one another than they do with any other organism" (Hall, B., p. 308). The typical Brown Tree

Allegory in Young Goodman Brown Essay
Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story "Young Goodman Brown" is an excellent example of an allegory. Allegories use events, characters or symbolism as
a bizarre or abstract representation of ideas in the story, and throughout "Young Goodman Brown", Hawthorne uses a heavy amount of symbolism, as
well as his characters and the events of the story line to develop a religious allegory. A large symbolic role is played by protagonist Goodman Brown's
wife, Faith. Also, the main event in the short story, Brown's journey into the forest, holds several major symbolic roles such as the traveler's staff, and
the thick mass of black clouds. This essay will be exploring how Hawthorne used symbolism to achieve an allegory within his short story.... Show more

"The Devil!" screamed the pious old lady." (Hawthorne 3) The old Puritan woman is walking through the heathen forest in prayer, and clearly
acknowledges the snake staff to be that of the devil. Not only could the serpent–like staff represent the devil itself, which is also conveyed as a serpent
in the Bible, but it can also convey the sly, snake–like personality of the elderly traveler, who knows just what giving the staff to Brown would do to
him. In Bible, the serpent in the Garden of Eden encourages Eve to eat of the Tree of Knowledge. "And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall
not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil".
(Genesis 3:4–5) The sly character of Brown's companion resembles the sly character of the devil in the story of Adam and Eve in relation to the fall of
Man. Once Adam ate of the Tree of Knowledge, sin and transgression of the law came unto Man. Likewise, the traveler knew that if Brown walked
with his staff, he would no longer be blind to see the sin among his В‘Puritan' family and

Symbolism in "Young Goodman Brown" "Young Goodman Brown" is a short story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and was set during the 17th
Century Puritan Era. The story was published in 1835 during the Romantic Era. Nathaniel Hawthorne was known for being the master of symbolism.
His novels and short stories have been embedded with suggestion and imagination. The dense symbolism that Hawthorne writes could imply multiple
interpretations. "Young Goodman Brown" has quite a few themes and symbols within itself. Faith, Young Goodman Brown, the forest, the old man, the
pink ribbons, and the staff are all symbols in the short story. Faith is Goodman Brown's young wife, and a symbol ... Show more content on

He is a young, good man. He symbolizes the innocence of young Christian men who are often tempted and naГЇve. Goodman leaves his wife, Faith,
who also symbolizes his faith in God, and goes on a journey in the forest where he is confronted by the old man, who symbolizes the devil. Young
Goodman Brown is shocked when he hears stories of his father and grandfather, and when he sees with the minister and Deacon Gookin with his
own eyes. He realizes even the most Christian men in his life had been tempted by the devil at some point in their lives. Once Goodman became
aware of his wife also being involved in the devil's scheme, he decides to do the same. He loses his faith in God. He loses his innocence because of
is incoherent corruptibility. This was bound to happen whether this was all a dream or not. If it was all a dream, this is all coming from
Goodman's head, implying he has a deep, dark side. Either way, his loss of innocence was certain. The forest represents evil and darkness. From the
moment Goodman enters the woods, he is apprehensive about what will happen. "'There may be a devilish Indian behind every tree,' said Goodman
Brown to himself; and he glanced fearfully behind him as he added, 'What if the devil himself should be at my very elbow'" (Hawthorne n. pag.)! As
Goodman continues deeper into the forest after running into the old man, the more frightened he becomes. "'Too far! Too far!' exclaimed the

Nathanial Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown
Young Goodman Brown
Nathanial Hawthorne's short story of Young Goodman Brown is a reflection of the Puritan faith as well as the conflicts that occur leading into evil.
Hawthorne delivers a story based on seventeenth century events and has revealed a story that has double meanings throughout. This analysis will
highlight the themes of Young Goodman Brownhimself as well as the usage of symbols and allegories within the story.
The short story YoungGoodman Brown starts off when "Young Goodman Brown came forth at sunset into the street at Salem village"(1). His
journey is said to begin at sunset into a forest, which is odd because it is not the usual time to begin a trip. Also, the Salem village has a double
meaning because the Salem village is the place where he lives but also brings to mind the famous witch trials one hundred years ago, while the puritan
faith got out of control in this time, Young Goodman Brown is also from the same time which sets the scene for the story. As Brown starts off on his
journey into the dark woods symbolizing the unknown, the frightened, and the uncivilized. This makes an assumption that evil is ... Show more content

Goodman Brown Symbolism
In the short story "Young Goodman Brown" written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the symbolism was used throughout the story. Hawthorne used
symbolism to create another world of ideas concerning Goodman Brown's faith. The symbolism in this short story shows points in Goodman Brown
where he begins to make comparisons between his religious beliefs and the evil he is "witnessing." Brown's view on people and life becomes
conflicted when he starts to realize that there is evil all around him. Nathaniel Hawthorne portrayed symbolism in this short story by giving his main
character the name "Goodman Brown and naming Goodman's wife "Faith", the pink ribbons in her hair, the path Goodman chooses to take, the forest
he goes through, the staff his companion carries and the significance of the townspeople he discovers in the forest all contribute to the symbolism that
Hawthorne is delivering in this story.
Goodman Brown seems to be a religious man that is becoming skeptical about his faith and the goodness in people. Nathaniel Hawthorne names his
main character Goodman, which is a representative of the general good in all men and women. As Goodman Brown takes his journey through the
forest he begins to lose his faith. Goodman Brown says "What a wretch am I to leave her on such an errand!" (Hawthorne 1) and when he tells his
companion "having kept covenant by meeting thee here, it is my purpose now to return whence I came. I have scruples touching the matter thou wot'st
of" (Hawthorne 3).

How Do Brown Tree Snakes Affect Our Ecosystems?
Brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis)
Invasive species are a potential critical problem. They can influence the environment completely; anything from individual species to entire ecosystems.
The brown tree snake was at first located in Indonesia and New Guinea, but the brown tree snake became an invasive species to Guam by coincidence
(3). Because the Brown tree snake is very capable to hide in confined spaces it is believed that they were distributed to Guam by U.S military ships
during their war against Japan (5). The brown tree snake can be easily distinguished by its brown, greenish colour, rear fangs and a large, almost
disproportioned, head compared to its body (5).
In 2001 there were 12,000 to 15,000 snakes per square miles in Guam. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Dating Vs Radiometric Dating
Radiometric dating is a technique for determining the age of objects by measuring the decay of radioactive elements they contain (). Radiometric
dating helps to determine the age of the earth and its organisms by measuring its radioactivity. This process is can provide dates with a fair amount of
precision. Whereas, the fossil record helps to provide clues to the past and history of life on earth. It also proves the common occurrence of the
evolution from one species to another. Each of these theories helps to support the theory of evolution. Evidence suggest when comparing the fossil
record with radiometric dating, the proof of evolution between the two lines of evidence are agreeable.

Another obvious reason such a soft–bodied animal would change colour is to hide from predators. An example of animal use colour as a survival
mechanism is Cuttlefish. These fish change its colour and texture to blend into its surrounding. It uses a sensor to detect the amount of light that being

In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe conflict is almost inevitable when two cultures come into contact. Okonkwo has a normal life as a male
villager he has to grow his yams and live normal but when foreigners show up conflict occurs. This is shown in the book by showing the villagers
saying to the white men to build their church in the evil forest and the white men go on and do it. This attracts some of the villagers to this which
leads to major conflict in the village and they start to attack each other by burning things and arresting each other. It does not have to lead to conflict
right away but it does happen at some point hence the name Things Fall Apart when the Christians first arrive all is ok but later on it all breaks loose.

Young Goodman Brown Character Analysis
Brown's downfall is caused by his excessive pride. "Young Goodman Brown" is a story about a Puritan minister named Goodman Brown leaving his
home to go meet with the devil, although neither he nor the audience knows it's the devil yet. Throughout the events in the story, Goodman Brown's
pride is the main cause of the misery and suffering he goes through. In the beginning of the story, Goodman Brown is about to leave his home and
his wife, Faith, to go on an errand. His wife begs him not to leave, for fear that she will sin if she is alone with her thoughts. He says "(my) love and
(my) Faith...this one night I must tarry away from thee." He is referring to Faith, meaning his wife, here, but it is also metaphorical for his faith in God.
He is leaving his faith in God just for the night (supposedly). He is leaving his faith with his wife, Faith, when he goes to meet the devil in the
woods. He promises to "cling to her skirts and follow her to Heaven." His pride is shown here, because he thinks he can meet the devil and will
only sin for the night just because he made that promise. This is also ironic because when he returns home the next morning, he is unable to see his
wife in the same way as before. Upon meeting the devil, Goodman Brown is late and says it's because "Faith kept me back awhile." Goodman Brown
is talking about his wife, Faith, who physically held him back, but he is also talking about his faith in God psychologically holding him back. One clue
that tells the

Theme of Good vs. Evil in “Sweat” Essay
The main character in Zora Neale Hurston's "Sweat" is a black woman who resides in the South that clutches on to her belief in God to help her get
through the suffering that she endures from her abusive and adulterous husband, Sykes. "Sweat" is full of religious symbolism that demonstrates that
Hurston was using the theme of good vs. evil in the short story. In the very beginning of "Sweat" one can see that Delia possesses a very strong
work ethic, by the way that she is working vigorously to wash the clothes for the white people that she worked for to put food on the table and a roof
over her and Sykes' head. The white clothing that Delia washes in the story represents her character. White signifies her virtuousness and wholesome...

Sykes personality is totally different than Delia's. Sykes Jones is physically and emotionally cruel to Delia. He is immoral and unfaithful; furthermore
he takes the money that is earned from Delia's tough labor and squanders it away on his mistress, Bertha. Whereas Sykes may be strong in body, he
does not have any belief in God. Sykes in a sense can be compared to the devil because like the devil he drained Delia of her beauty, joy and
happiness that she once possessed. This point is brought up in the story when Joe Clarke and the village men are talking about Delia and Sykes "
...But dey squeeze an' grind an' wring every drop uh pleasure dat's in 'em out" (443). According to Davis Masson, who wrote, Essays Biographical
and Critical "All sadness and melancholy come from the devil" (86). Once their marriage starts to fall apart, Sykes uses Delia's anxiety of snakes
against her. Andre' MГ©nez, who wrote The Subtle Beast, states, "Being sometimes poisonous, hidden in the shadows; slowly and mutely guiding,
snakes have often been deemed powerful and shifty, evil creatures whose major aim was to frustrate the natural and proper development of life" (9).
The spiritual correlation of good and evil is set up in two occurrences in this narrative. On one occasion, Sykes sneaks up behind Delia and uses a
whip to frighten Delia by placing it on her shoulders, making her assume that it was a snake. Delia yells, "Sykes, why you throw

Nathaniel Hawthorne 's Young Goodman Brown
"The Path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men," (Tarantino). In Nathaniel Hawthorne's
story "Young Goodman Brown", Brown is the righteous man following a path beset on all sides by evil. Hawthorne utilizes the fictional elements of
symbolism, characterization, and setting to discuss the story's theme of temptation of the wrong choices over the right. This story is based in
Hawthorne's home town Salem. The story is about a man's journey through a forest where he is intercepted by the devil on his way to a black mass.
Goodman Brown is torn between continuing on this path of evil alongside the devil or returning to his wife faith. Throughout his journey Brown is

This object was his beloved faith's pink ribbons which only proved that she too has chosen to walk along the path of evil and sin. The forest in
which Brown travelled along with the devil is not just as simple as being the setting of the story. The forest also shows symbolic values to this
story. Hawthorne explains the forest when saying "He had taken a dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest, which barely
stood aside to let the narrow path creep through, and closed immediately behind. It was all as lonely as could be..." (261). It is shown here how
dark the forest is which is symbolizing the dark path that Goodman Brown is on. "It was now deep dusk in the forest, and deepest in that part of it
where these two were journeying." (Hawthorne 262). Again using darkness to show the path to evil with this quote. This is when Brown has already
crossed paths with the devil himself and they both are on the path of evil towards this black mass in the middle of the forest. Goodman Brown's
continuation into the forest to attend the black mass shows his temptation to choose the wrong choices over the right ones. When venturing into the
forest Brown is immediately approached by someone which is later revealed as the devil. The devil shows similar features to brown but what stands
out the most is the staff the devils has. "But the only thing about him, that could be fixed upon was

considered one of the most aggressive invasive species. The snake has wreaked havoc on the island. They have no nature predators on Guam. This
lead to a quick decreased the bird population; 12 native bird species have been driven into or close to extinction (Morelle). Other species,

Analysis Of ' Snake ' And The Snake
"Snake" and "The Snake"
Fred Min
"Snake" by D.H. Lawrence
1. Emotional fear within oneself is a common foundation that dictates the "reaction" in relation to certain situations, such as the presence of a snake. In
D.H. Lawrence's "Snake", the emotions of fascination and intense hospitality, although dysfunctional, heavily takes precedence over fear. The two
factors of morality or "education" also plays a key role in Lawrence's internal conflict. This is clearly presented in the text by the description of the
author's initial reaction to the encounter of the snake. Rather than running away in terror or forcing it to flee, D.H. Lawrence "like a second–comer"

Young Goodman Brown from a Moral Standpoint
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts. At the age of four, his father passed away from yellow fever, forcing his family to move in
with his uncle. The positively influential Uncle Robert Manning pushed Hawthorne to succeed in school and insisted he go to college. Following his
education at Bowdoin College, Hawthorne spent years in isolation mastering the art of writing. It was during those years when Hawthorne discovered
that his ancestors were founders and Puritan leaders of the Salem witch trials. Shortly after this tragic finding, he wrote "Young Goodman Brown," a tale
that is considered one of the greatest in American literature. AnalyzingNathaniel Hawthorne's work from a moral perspective can help illuminate his

She represents Goodman Brown's "faith" or his religious intentions throughout the story. The setting of the story also plays a significant role in
Hawthorne's moral story set in symbolism. As Brown travels further into the depths of the forest, he feels more fearful and unsafe, saying to himself,
"there may be a devilish Indian behind every tree. What if the devil himself should be at my very elbow!" (Hawthorne 27). Therefore, to iterate the
previously stated passage from an analyst's point of view: the tale begins with "good man" Brown leaving faith to spend a night in fear and uncertainty
in order to experiment with the devil. But if young Goodman Brown is such a moral being, then why would he experiment with the devil in the first
place?
According to German philosopher Immanuel Kant, "conscience is an instinct to pass judgment upon ourselves in accordance with moral laws"
(Kant 93). Brown did not pass judgment on himself when he decided to experiment with the devil because he knew he had an escape with his wife.
Faith was, in his eyes, the purest human being on the face of the Earth and when he became bored with his trial, he could go back and enjoy religious
sanctuary with her. Once he discovered the presence of his wife at the ceremony, Brown begins to scream Faith's name (Hawthorne 32). Only when
Brown sees this pink ribbon from Faith's cap flutter down from the sky, does he

"Young Goodman Brown" is a story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1835. This was the period around the crazy incidents of the Salem Witch
Trials. This piece is covered with topics that can be described as having alternative meanings. Through the symbolism in the story, the audience is able
to make ties between the old relationships Goodman Brown had with the other townspeople. The series of event in the story bring him to believe that
his entire life was a lie and no one was worthy of his trust. All of the misconceptions in his life were brought on by the occupations and actions that his
fellow townsfolk underwent while Goodman Brown was around them. Through the regards of symbolism, new meanings of this nighttime experience

It was stated that the man he encountered had known Browns' elders as well. Goodman was led to a large assembly and he found many townspeople
that he knew gathered around an altar surrounded by burning trees. He recognized many of these faces and it changed the image he had toward them.
From the audiences' perspective, we understand many of the stories "characters have the names of Salem residents charged with witchcraft; and its
major action takes place in the noisy pasture historical documents of, the period designate as a witches ' gathering place" (Bunge 434). At the time,
Brown had seen many of the people that attended the assembly to be sin free. This is symbolic because the assembly takes place in what the
audience knows to be as a town that has had numerous witch trials. This led him to realize that everyone has their flaws but he may not be able to
accept them. This explains a concept of the story involving the loss of innocence. When he discovers the town in this meeting, his faith is being
tested. He is not able to cope and has reason to believe that he is now held to a higher standard than others because the ones he thought were saints are
no longer faithful in his eyes.
As mentioned, when Goodman Brown wandered into the forest, he encountered a man. This man is seen to be the Devil due to the serpent like
engravings that wrapped around his staff. With a resembling figure of Goodman, the

We tell stories to remember history, but these tales aren't as static as the facts of history. Each time a story is told, it changes with the storyteller's
interpretation. Paintings are no exception. One of the most famous stories in mainstream Christianity is the story of Adam and Eve. The story of the
mother and father of all humans disobeying God and eating from the forbidden tree of knowledge, and being punished for the misdeed, is passed
down as a lesson about why people must obey God. There have been numerous artistic depictions of this story created throughout the ages, two of the
most famous being created by Michelangelo and Cranach. Adam and Eve by Cranach and Adam and Eve by Michelangelo are both depictions of
Adam and Even eating the forbidden fruit. Cranach demonstrates his viewpoint of the act as an unwitting sin using a path of blame from the serpent all
the way to Adam and Eve as well as bold colors to emphasize vitality and pureness lost. Michelangelo, on the other hand, shows his belief that it was
deliberate disobedience, demonstrated by the integration of snake and man as the source of temptation and a barren landscape to imply their lack of
remorse. Ultimately, Cranach shows a reason to forgive, while Michelangelo justifies the punishment. The lines connecting Adam, Eve and the serpent
as well as the distinction, or lack of, between them and the snake in Cranach's and Michelangelo's paintings shows where they place the

Young Goodman Brown Nathaniel Hawthorn's "Young Goodman Brown" has many symbols that tie to the theme. The symbols take many forms from
the settings to the characters. Symbolism is used as a means to discover the truth about some characters. Hawthorne "placed them (his characters) amid
settings and objects that gave symbolic expression to their inward states" (Conn 111). The symbols can be seen as just part of the storyline but when
you take a further look and analyze the story they can be seen to represent many different things. "Young Goodman Brown" is a story about people
facing everyday temptation. Hawthorne used setting, internal conflict, and symbols to describe how evil tested Browns faith. Images of darkness,
symbolic representations of names and people and the journey through the woods all contribute to Hawthorne 's theme of good people sometimes doing
bad things. Goodman Brown himself is one of the symbols in this story. "With the name Goodman Brown, Hawthorne makes his hero a representative
character, a kind of Puritan everyman, and so the weakness Hawthorne finds in Brown would apply to Puritans in general"(Predmore 255). In
Hawthorne's story Brown's name symbolizes youth and nature. His youth suggests that he is yet to be corrupted by the world and is innocent. Brown
was a husband who symbolizes goodness and immaturity. He seems to be very religious, happily married and trustworthy. Goodman Brown is

How Young Goodman Brown Became Old Badman Brown Essay
Nathaniel Hawthorne was a nineteenth–century American writer of the Romantic Movement. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1804, he was one of
those rare writers who drew critical acclaim during his lifetime. Hawthorne used Salem as a setting for most of his stories, such as The Scarlet Letter,
The Blithedale Romance, and "Young Goodman Brown". Today, readers still appreciate Hawthorne's work for its storytelling qualities and for the
moral and theological questions it raises. Nathaniel Hawthorne's work is typically fraught with symbolism, much of it deriving from his Puritan
ancestry; relatives of his were judges in the Salem witchcraft trials. "Young Goodman Brown" is an allegory whose characters play a major role in

Likewise, he will be left alone afterwards when he tries to retrieve it/her during his journey. Author Terence Martin speculates that Goodman Brown's
journey into the forest is best defined as a kind of "general, indeterminate allegory, representing man's irrational drive to leave faith, home, and security
temporarily behind, for whatever reason, to take a chance with one more errand onto the wilder shores of experience" (Martin 92).
It should not escape attention that Goodman Brown's wife, a lighthearted naive woman, has the name of Faith. Faith is by no means an unusual
woman's name, but it is significant in this story that she is presented to us first as a very young bride with pink ribbons in her hair––almost like a child
(1264). This young woman is filled with hidden sin, yet she is said to be Godly. Because Faith was so honest and Godly, Young Goodman Brown put
all of his faith in her, which made her the best of his worst enemies. Faith's ribbon is a description of her personality or her inner–self. The pink ribbon
that Faith wears is a symbol of purity. Faith's ribbon is found in the evil forest when Brown awakes, and that's when Faith is really seen as an
unclear person. Faith is also said to have forsaken not only against Goodman Brown but also against God because she gave in to the likes of the devil.
The ribbons provide continuity between faith as an ideal of a Puritan woman and as a sinner. Her pink

The Setting of "Young Goodman Brown"

The tale opens at Goodman and Faith Brown's house, in the doorway where the protagonist is telling his wife goodbye, and where she is trying to

Young Goodman Brown Symbolism Essay
Young Goodman Brown is a short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Written in 1835, the story deals with a late night meeting between a man and the
Devil. On the surface this is all the story is, but if one looks closer one would find the story to be littered with symbolic images.
Brown has been married to his wife aptly named Faith, for only three months. Three months is a very short time and this can symbolize that he
lacks an attachment to faith. He is willing to stray from his own wife to go on his journey at night. Brown knows that what lies at the end of his
journey of the woods is not good, but he only sees it as a one time occasion. Goodman Brown even says to himself "Well; she 's a blessed angel on
earth; and after this one night, I 'll ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Come, devil, for thee is this world given." He has given up and welcomes the devil.
I think one of the biggest symbols in the story was Satan himself. When we hear the word Satan we think, hell, fire, he it the symbol for ultimate evil
and Brown himself continues that tradition. Satan represents a number of things in the story like evil lies within all of us. When Goodman Brown
first had a meeting in the woods, Satan is described as an older version of Brown, "apparently in the same rank of life as Goodman Brown, and
bearing a considerable resemblance to him, though more in expression than features. Still they might have been taken for father and son." In human
form, Satan carries with him, a walking stick in the shape of a snake. Since the story of Adam and Eve, snakes have been symbolic representation of
Satan.
The story of Young Goodman Brownis one that works on two very different levels. On it 's surface, the story is nothing more than about a man who
experiences a quite literally hellish event. When looked at deeper, the story is a much deeper meaning of the importance of faith, and how easily a
person can be made or broken by it.

Symbolism In Pablo Picasso's Snakes
Symbolism in "Snakes" Throughout the past, people expressed their emotions, thoughts, or struggles more fully using symbolism through works of
arts. For example, Pablo Picasso, an artist known for his "Blue Period" that occurred from 1900 to 1904, expressed his sadness and deep regrets
through a series of paintings using different shades of blue after learning about the suicide of his friend ("Pablo Picasso's Blue Period"). Another
example is Frida Kahlo, a famous Mexican painter during the 20th century. She showed her pain through a series of paintings of self–portraits, which
often had symbolism of physical and psychological wounds ("Frida Kahlo Biography"). People still use symbolism to express their thoughts and
feelings or connect with readers through their works of art till this present day. An example of this is an Americanfiction author by the name of
Danielle Evans. Evans wrote multiple short stories and debuted it into a collection known as Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self. In thisshort

Foreshadowing In Young Goodman Brown
Young Goodman Brown: Brief Analysis Young Goodman Brown is about a story of a young everyday man and his journey through a darkened forest
with a dark and foreboding stranger. The theme of the story is about a test of faith, how one man figuratively abandons his Faith to seek a treacherous
task with the dark stranger. His young wife Faith, is an allegory to faith, and his lying to and leaving Faith is a figurative demonstration of Young
Goodman Brown literally abandoning his faith in God. There is also a use of foreshadowing in the phrase "There may be a devilish Indian behind
every tree ... What if the devil himself should be at my very elbow!" (Hawthorn, 1835). This use of foreshadowing is very important, because this also
denotes a shift in the story. This leads me to believe that the events following are just a dream, as it seems that this is a self–fulfilling prophecy. The
staff that the man carries is repeatedly referred to, and compared to a snake, a serpent. The serpent is a biblically evil creature; the talking snake in the
Garden of Eden was the manipulator of Eve that caused the fall of man. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

his faith was what saved him from the harrowing dream, and what woke him from his slumber. However, he is not completely saved as he had

The old traveler first appears in the allegory as sitting down at the foot of a tree, waiting for Young Goodman Brown. At that instant, he becomes Young
Goodman Brown's companion on his journey through the woods. Henceforth, the Narrator states, "And it was I that bought your father a pitch – pine
knot, kindled at my own hearth, to set fire to an Indian village, in King Philip's War" (263). The detail suggests that Nathaniel Hawthorne
purposely makes the old traveler tell Goodman Brown his evil doings, to warn the reader about his evil nature. In the same fashion, the detail
proves that the old traveler knows Young Goodman Brown's family during the 1670s. Eventually, both men get on the topic of Faith, Young
Goodman's wife of three months. To clarify, the Narrator states, "I would not for twenty old women like that one hobbling before us, that Faith
should come to any harm" (263). The detail puts into question how good the traveler knows Faith. Comparatively, the detail questions the
traveler's power to make sure no harm comes to Faith. Moreover, the old traveler and Young Goodman Brown conversate with Goody Cloyse on
her way to the meeting. Specifically, the Narrator states, "The devil! ...The Goody Cloyse knows her old friend?" (264). The detail implies that
many people know who he is, no matter how he looks. The detail also notes how the old traveler claims Goody Cloyse's accusation of being the
devil. After leaving Goody Cloyse, the old traveler continues to go down the same path with Young Goodman Brown. Due to him giving Goody
Close his serpent staff, the old traveler needs a new one. The Narrator states, "He plucked a branch of maple to serve for a walking stick, and began to
strip it of the twigs and bough ... the moment his fingers touched them, they became strangely withered and dried up, as with a week's sunshine" (265).

The Devil In Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown
Young Goodman Brown
In the short story Young goodman brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Goodman Brown realizes something extremely important about the world. Around
the beginning of the story, we can tell that Brown is very easy going and trusting. However, that changes by the end of the story.
Brown is living a happy life with his wife and friends. He thinks everything is perfect the way it is. One night, Young Goodman Brownleft to go on a
journey through the forest. We do not know exactly why he when on this journey but we do know that it had an evil purpose. We also do not know
why he was going to do something evil when he had such a happy life.

They were having a ceremony for somebody. Little did Brown know that it was his wife Faith that the ceremony was for. He tried to get to Faith as
quick as he could but he was too late. "There was a scream, drowned immediately in a louder murmur of voices...But something fluttered lightly down
through the air, and caught on the branch of a tree. The young man seized it, and beheld a pink ribbon" (Hawthorne, 49). Young Goodman Brown
realized that the pink ribbon was from Faith's hat. He has lost his faith. She gave into the darkness and will never return to the way she was.
After Brown lost his faith, he no longer trusted anybody in his village. "Often, awakening suddenly at midnight, he shrank from the bosom of Faith,
and at morning or even–tide, when the family knelt down at prayer, he scowled, and muttered to himself, and gazed sternly at his wife, and turned
away" (Hawthorne, 72). Brown did not like when his wife prayed anymore because he knows that she gave into the temptation of darkness.
Brown made a major realization by the end of the story. He found out that evil countroles the world and there is nothing that can be done about it. All
of his friends and family have been taken over by evil. He learned that nobody can be

Essay On Symbolism In Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown
Symbolism in Young Goodman Brown In the short story, "young Goodman brown," by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author elaborately unveils an
allegorical piece of work through his extensive use of symbolism. The story in itself takes us in a literal as well as figurative journey through a
transitional state in a man's spiritual life. Our protagonist Young Goodman browngoes through this transitional state as he is ripped away from
previously held ideals and religious beliefs. Curiosity is what drives young Brown outside of his safe heaven, and into a promising hell; a hell that is to

Hawthorne accomplishes his purpose by implementing symbolism the story. The strategic use of specific characters, objects, and places are all put
together to convey a frame of meaning beyond just their literal sense. We first see our set of symbolic components at the beginning of the story a
Goodman brown walks away from his beloved faith. Although subtle at first, as the story develops one can come to the conclusion that faith beyond
her physical self represents individual faith in the individual. Another symbolic character we come across with is the old man in the forest. As he
lures Goodman brown deeper into a forest of doubt, the old man and his staff become the ultimate tool to drive the young man away from his faith
and religion. Beyond his physical description, the old man seems to portray an image of universal evil, and the devil himself. In addition to the use of
certain key characters, Hawthorne expresses symbolism through a couple inanimate objects. The pink ribbons in faith's cap portray an overall sense of
innocence and purity. On the other hand, the staff with "the likeness of a black snake" portrays all that is opposite to purity and innocence. it is the
staff that allows brown to experience the world through darkened eyes, a world in which even the holiest ones turn to

Young Goodman Brown Quickwrite
Throughout the short story titled Young Goodman Brown, Hawthorne uses allegories and symbolism to introduce and present a theme. The overall
theme of this short story is that curiosity leads to temptation and sin even with people that are innocent. By using strong symbols, it creates a
realization of what the message of the story is. One symbol, the pink ribbon, exemplifies this idea. The pink ribbon symbolizes purity, and how Faith is
perfect and innocent, never doing anything wrong. Hawthorne describes Faith and her pink ribbons, stating, "with the pink ribbons, gazing anxiously
forth, and bursting with such joy at the sight of him" (Hawthorne 67). The color of Faith's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The serpentine staff plays a significance in the short story, as the animal on the staff resembles a snake. Snakes are usually thought of as 'cunning',
'sneaky' and 'sly'. More importantly, snakes are pictured as loathsome and dangerous in the bible, and in christian religions. They are also
associated with Satan. In the bible, snakes are mentioned in the story of Adam and Eve. The snake was used by satan to trick and tempt Eve into
disobeying God. In short the bible states, ' "But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your
eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." ' (Genesis 3:1–24). By using the snake as the animal on the staff, Hawthorne is
able to create the image that the staff is satanic, and associated with evil and the devil. To illustrate, the text explains, ' "The devil!" screamed the
pious old lady. "Then Goody Cloyse knows her old friend?" observed the traveller, confronting her and leaning on his writhing stick.' (Hawthorne 60).
The descriptive imagery of the staff explains the association with the devil, as the traveler talks about his encounters with young goodman brown's
grandfather and father. The traveler, with his serpentine staff ,tempts Brown to keep going into the forest of Salem village, the place where the
Witchcraft trials took place. The

The Guam Rail is mostly brown with white stripes on its stomach. It grows up to a height of 30cm and is omnivorous. There used to be as many as 10,000 Guam Rails on the island and they were easily spotted. However, during World War II, theBrown Tree Snake (Boiga irregularis) came to Guam and devastated native bird populations. The Guam Rail was one of the native birds that were annihilated. In just 30 years, the Guam Rail population plummeted to just 21 birds. The Guam Rail is now extinct in the wild. However, there are still some birds in captivity now. The Guam Rail, as well as spreading seeds, also pollinates certain native plants. Without the Guam Rail and other native birds, pollination of these plants will become rarer resulting in a drop in the population of those plants. These plants might even become extinct altogether. This could create a domino–like effect that could become catastrophic for the ecosystem of Guam. Also, spider populations on Guam have skyrocketed in the past few years. The population of native birds on Guam seems to be proportional to the number of spiders on Guam. As the number of Guam's native birds decreased, spider populations have increased. This suggests that with fewer predators, the spiders have flourished. Haldre Rogers, a biology student, says that "Guam appears to be swarming with spiders...The spiders used to be controlled by the birds, but now they, too, have few predators". An example of a bird which has been successfully preserved from extinction is the Bald Eagle. Due to the extensive use of DDT, excessive hunting, and loss of habitat, the Bald Eagle population in America plunged from around 400,000 in the 1700's to just 412 nesting pairs in the 1950's. However, just by imposing regulations on hunting, and by banning DDT, the population has rebounded back to around 9789 breeding pairs in 2006. That's 23 times more than 50 years ago. This proves how easy it can be to preserve endangered animals if the government commits to a plan. To ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Use of Color Symbolism by Nathaniel Hawthorne Essay Is it possible for an author to utilize so much symbolism that it captivates the reader to the extent of paralleling the tale with their own life? The principle of symbolism is quite evident in the story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, "Young Goodman Brown". Nathaniel Hawthorn's work is immersed with symbolism with most of it deriving from his Puritan beliefs. The themes of sin, guilt, innocence, and lust come forth through the uses of color symbolism as well as visual clues. All of these things are dealt with in everyday life in modern America. "His ability to create vivid and symbolic images that embody great moral questions appears strongly in his short stories." (Bloom) To begin to understand the mind of Nathaniel Hawthorne you must ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The pink ribbons in Faith's hair are Hawthorne's way to captivate the reader's imagination. By doing so it makes the reader question as they are reading whether or not Faith is as pure as she portrays to be. "Those celebrated pink ribbons on Faith's cap–the objects of an astonishing range of responses by critics of the story are vital to an understanding of her metamorphosis and of Brown's desperate efforts to recover his faith." (Bloom) As Goodman Brown enters into the forest Hawthorn utilizes once again the description of darkness to symbolize the forest as being a place of evil doings. In the description of the staff that the old man held resembled that of a black snake. The use of the color black would indicate the possibility of the staff being a symbol of something evil, but the addition of snake was sure to set the reader at full attention. A black snake is what tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden in the Bible. Hawthorne utilized this color symbolism to warn of the evil doings or thoughts the older traveler was involved in. After Goodman Brown was disappointed by hearing what the pastor and deacon of his church were talking about he began to question God and if there truly was a heaven. As God does in our own lives he sent signals to reveal to Goodman Brown the love he has for mankind. For Goodman Brown that was the blue arch and the sky filled with stars shining. Impact and Control of the Brown Tree Snake as an Invasive Species on Guam by Karen Myers Introduction "Invasive species are a rapidly growing problem, and in many areas, they are the second–most–important cause of species declines" (Perry & Vice, 2009, p. 993). Often times, the invasive problem is by accident due to transportation of the species, but at times is intentional. This paper will review the history of the Brown Tree Snake as an invasive species, a species description of the Brown Tree Snake, and the impact this species has had on Guam . The time that would be spent on searching for ways to get rid of the snakes would be very costly and could cause a serious economic burden on Hawaii (Burnett, Sittidaj, & Roumasset, 2011). Because of the history and background of the Brown Tree Snake and the negative impact it has had on Guam, researchers are continuously looking for ways to control the ongoing threat it could have on other Pacific Islands. A description and attributes of the Brown Tree Snake's species helps researchers in their efforts to find and control the invasion of the snake. Species Description "The Brown Tree Snake is one of about 1,800 species of modern snakes lumped into... the family of ''typical'' snakes... Allegories use events, characters or symbolism as a bizarre or abstract representation of ideas in the story, and throughout "Young Goodman Brown", Hawthorne uses a heavy amount of symbolism, as well as his characters and the events of the story line to develop a religious allegory. A large symbolic role is played by protagonist Goodman Brown's wife, Faith. Also, the main event in the short story, Brown's journey into the forest, holds several major symbolic roles such as the traveler's staff, and the thick mass of black clouds. This essay will be exploring how Hawthorne used symbolism to achieve an allegory within his short story.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "The Devil!" screamed the pious old lady." (Hawthorne 3) The old Puritan woman is walking through the heathen forest in prayer, and clearly acknowledges the snake staff to be that of the devil. Not only could the serpent–like staff represent the devil itself, which is also conveyed as a serpent in the Bible, but it can also convey the sly, snake–like personality of the elderly traveler, who knows just what giving the staff to Brown would do to him. In Bible, the serpent in the Garden of Eden encourages Eve to eat of the Tree of Knowledge. "And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil". The story was published in 1835 during the Romantic Era. Nathaniel Hawthorne was known for being the master of symbolism. His novels and short stories have been embedded with suggestion and imagination. The dense symbolism that Hawthorne writes could imply multiple interpretations. Goodman leaves his wife, Faith, who also symbolizes his faith in God, and goes on a journey in the forest where he is confronted by the old man, who symbolizes the devil. Young Goodman Brown is shocked when he hears stories of his father and grandfather, and when he sees with the minister and Deacon Gookin with his own eyes. He realizes even the most Christian men in his life had been tempted by the devil at some point in their lives. Once Goodman became aware of his wife also being involved in the devil's scheme, he decides to do the same. He loses his faith in God. He loses his innocence because of is incoherent corruptibility. • 10. Nathanial Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown Young Goodman Brown Nathanial Hawthorne's short story of Young Goodman Brown is a reflection of the Puritan faith as well as the conflicts that occur leading into evil. Hawthorne delivers a story based on seventeenth century events and has revealed a story that has double meanings throughout. This analysis will highlight the themes of Young Goodman Brownhimself as well as the usage of symbols and allegories within the story. The short story YoungGoodman Brown starts off when "Young Goodman Brown came forth at sunset into the street at Salem village"(1). His journey is said to begin at sunset into a forest, which is odd because it is not the usual time to begin a trip. Also, the Salem village has a double meaning because the Salem village is the place where he lives but also brings to mind the famous witch trials one hundred years ago, while the puritan faith got out of control in this time, Young Goodman Brown is also from the same time which sets the scene for the story. • 11. Goodman Brown Symbolism In the short story "Young Goodman Brown" written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the symbolism was used throughout the story. Hawthorne used symbolism to create another world of ideas concerning Goodman Brown's faith. The symbolism in this short story shows points in Goodman Brown where he begins to make comparisons between his religious beliefs and the evil he is "witnessing." Brown's view on people and life becomes conflicted when he starts to realize that there is evil all around him. Nathaniel Hawthorne portrayed symbolism in this short story by giving his main character the name "Goodman Brown and naming Goodman's wife "Faith", the pink ribbons in her hair, the path Goodman chooses to take, the forest he goes through, the staff his companion carries and the significance of the townspeople he discovers in the forest all contribute to the symbolism that Hawthorne is delivering in this story. Goodman Brown seems to be a religious man that is becoming skeptical about his faith and the goodness in people. Nathaniel Hawthorne names his main character Goodman, which is a representative of the general good in all men and women. As Goodman Brown takes his journey through the forest he begins to lose his faith. Goodman Brown says "What a wretch am I to leave her on such an errand!" • 12. How Do Brown Tree Snakes Affect Our Ecosystems? Brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis) Invasive species are a potential critical problem. They can influence the environment completely; anything from individual species to entire ecosystems. The brown tree snake was at first located in Indonesia and New Guinea, but the brown tree snake became an invasive species to Guam by coincidence (3). Because the Brown tree snake is very capable to hide in confined spaces it is believed that they were distributed to Guam by U.S military ships during their war against Japan (5). The brown tree snake can be easily distinguished by its brown, greenish colour, rear fangs and a large, almost disproportioned, head compared to its body (5). In 2001 there were 12,000 to 15,000 snakes per square miles in Guam. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Campbell, G.H. Rodda, T.H. Fritts. "Young Goodman Brown" is a story about a Puritan minister named Goodman Brown leaving his home to go meet with the devil, although neither he nor the audience knows it's the devil yet. Throughout the events in the story, Goodman Brown's pride is the main cause of the misery and suffering he goes through. In the beginning of the story, Goodman Brown is about to leave his home and his wife, Faith, to go on an errand. His wife begs him not to leave, for fear that she will sin if she is alone with her thoughts. He says "(my) love and (my) Faith...this one night I must tarry away from thee." He is referring to Faith, meaning his wife, here, but it is also metaphorical for his faith in God. He is leaving his faith in God just for the night (supposedly). He is leaving his faith with his wife, Faith, when he goes to meet the devil in the woods. He promises to "cling to her skirts and follow her to Heaven." His pride is shown here, because he thinks he can meet the devil and will only sin for the night just because he made that promise. This is also ironic because when he returns home the next morning, he is unable to see his wife in the same way as before. Upon meeting the devil, Goodman Brown is late and says it's because "Faith kept me back awhile." Goodman Brown is talking about his wife, Faith, who physically held him back, but he is also talking about his faith in God psychologically holding him back. One clue that tells the ... "Sweat" is full of religious symbolism that demonstrates that Hurston was using the theme of good vs. evil in the short story. In the very beginning of "Sweat" one can see that Delia possesses a very strong work ethic, by the way that she is working vigorously to wash the clothes for the white people that she worked for to put food on the table and a roof over her and Sykes' head. Sykes in a sense can be compared to the devil because like the devil he drained Delia of her beauty, joy and happiness that she once possessed. This point is brought up in the story when Joe Clarke and the village men are talking about Delia and Sykes " ...But dey squeeze an' grind an' wring every drop uh pleasure dat's in 'em out" (443). In Nathaniel Hawthorne's story "Young Goodman Brown", Brown is the righteous man following a path beset on all sides by evil. Hawthorne utilizes the fictional elements of symbolism, characterization, and setting to discuss the story's theme of temptation of the wrong choices over the right. This story is based in Hawthorne's home town Salem. The story is about a man's journey through a forest where he is intercepted by the devil on his way to a black mass. The forest in which Brown travelled along with the devil is not just as simple as being the setting of the story. The forest also shows symbolic values to this story. Hawthorne explains the forest when saying "He had taken a dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest, which barely stood aside to let the narrow path creep through, and closed immediately behind. It was all as lonely as could be..." (261). It is shown here how dark the forest is which is symbolizing the dark path that Goodman Brown is on. "It was now deep dusk in the forest, and deepest in that part of it where these two were journeying." (Hawthorne 262). Again using darkness to show the path to evil with this quote. This is when Brown has already crossed paths with the devil himself and they both are on the path of evil towards this black mass in the middle of the forest. Goodman Brown's continuation into the forest to attend the black mass shows his temptation to choose the wrong choices over the right ones. When venturing into the forest Brown is immediately approached by someone which is later revealed as the devil. Emotional fear within oneself is a common foundation that dictates the "reaction" in relation to certain situations, such as the presence of a snake. In D.H. Lawrence's "Snake", the emotions of fascination and intense hospitality, although dysfunctional, heavily takes precedence over fear. The two factors of morality or "education" also plays a key role in Lawrence's internal conflict. This is clearly presented in the text by the description of the author's initial reaction to the encounter of the snake. Rather than running away in terror or forcing it to flee, D.H. Lawrence "like a second–comer" waited. Not only did he wait, he observed the undulating snake with a deeply consuming curiosity; essentially in hopes to discover an idiosyncratic trait that would reassure himself that this was no ordinary snake. However this did not stop Lawrence's conscious to pursue mental control, explaining how "voices in me said, if you were a man/ You would take a stick and break him now, and finish him off". The quote refers to the way the "traditional reaction" would have affected his actions and also how his education often attempts to strike fear away. "If you were not afraid you would kill him". Lawrence further endeavored away from the "traditional reaction" by feeling "honoured still more/ That he should seek my hospitality". 2. In stanza 12 of the "Snake", D.H. At the age of four, his father passed away from yellow fever, forcing his family to move in with his uncle. The positively influential Uncle Robert Manning pushed Hawthorne to succeed in school and insisted he go to college. Following his education at Bowdoin College, Hawthorne spent years in isolation mastering the art of writing. It was during those years when Hawthorne discovered that his ancestors were founders and Puritan leaders of the Salem witch trials. She represents Goodman Brown's "faith" or his religious intentions throughout the story. The setting of the story also plays a significant role in Hawthorne's moral story set in symbolism. As Brown travels further into the depths of the forest, he feels more fearful and unsafe, saying to himself, "there may be a devilish Indian behind every tree. What if the devil himself should be at my very elbow!" (Hawthorne 27). Therefore, to iterate the previously stated passage from an analyst's point of view: the tale begins with "good man" Brown leaving faith to spend a night in fear and uncertainty in order to experiment with the devil. But if young Goodman Brown is such a moral being, then why would he experiment with the devil in the first place? According to German philosopher Immanuel Kant, "conscience is an instinct to pass judgment upon ourselves in accordance with moral laws" (Kant 93). Brown did not pass judgment on himself when he decided to experiment with the devil because he knew he had an escape with his wife. Faith was, in his eyes, the purest human being on the face of the Earth and when he became bored with his trial, he could go back and enjoy religious sanctuary with her. Once he discovered the presence of his wife at the ceremony, Brown begins to scream Faith's name (Hawthorne 32). Goodman was led to a large assembly and he found many townspeople that he knew gathered around an altar surrounded by burning trees. From the audiences' perspective, we understand many of the stories "characters have the names of Salem residents charged with witchcraft; and its major action takes place in the noisy pasture historical documents of, the period designate as a witches ' gathering place" (Bunge 434). At the time, Brown had seen many of the people that attended the assembly to be sin free. This is symbolic because the assembly takes place in what the audience knows to be as a town that has had numerous witch trials. This led him to realize that everyone has their flaws but he may not be able to accept them. This explains a concept of the story involving the loss of innocence. Each time a story is told, it changes with the storyteller's interpretation. Paintings are no exception. One of the most famous stories in mainstream Christianity is the story of Adam and Eve. The story of the mother and father of all humans disobeying God and eating from the forbidden tree of knowledge, and being punished for the misdeed, is passed down as a lesson about why people must obey God. There have been numerous artistic depictions of this story created throughout the ages, two of the most famous being created by Michelangelo and Cranach. Adam and Eve by Cranach and Adam and Eve by Michelangelo are both depictions of Adam and Even eating the forbidden fruit. Cranach demonstrates his viewpoint of the act as an unwitting sin using a path of blame from the serpent all the way to Adam and Eve as well as bold colors to emphasize vitality and pureness lost. Michelangelo, on the other hand, shows his belief that it was deliberate disobedience, demonstrated by the integration of snake and man as the source of temptation and a barren landscape to imply their lack of remorse. Ultimately, Cranach shows a reason to forgive, while Michelangelo justifies the punishment. Analysis Of Nathaniel 's ' Young Goodman Brown ' Rosse Karely Velez Professor Faucette ENG 123 12 April 2015 Young Goodman Brown Nathaniel Hawthorn's "Young Goodman Brown" has many symbols that tie to the theme. The symbols take many forms from the settings to the characters. Symbolism is used as a means to discover the truth about some characters. Hawthorne "placed them (his characters) amid settings and objects that gave symbolic expression to their inward states" (Conn 111). The symbols can be seen as just part of the storyline but when you take a further look and analyze the story they can be seen to represent many different things. "Young Goodman Brown" is a story about people facing everyday temptation. Hawthorne used setting, internal conflict, and symbols to describe how evil tested Browns faith. Images of darkness, symbolic representations of names and people and the journey through the woods all contribute to Hawthorne 's theme of good people sometimes doing bad things. Goodman Brown himself is one of the symbols in this story. "With the name Goodman Brown, Hawthorne makes his hero a representative character, a kind of Puritan everyman, and so the weakness Hawthorne finds in Brown would apply to Puritans in general"(Predmore 255). It should not escape attention that Goodman Brown's wife, a lighthearted naive woman, has the name of Faith. Faith is by no means an unusual woman's name, but it is significant in this story that she is presented to us first as a very young bride with pink ribbons in her hair––almost like a child (1264). This young woman is filled with hidden sin, yet she is said to be Godly. Because Faith was so honest and Godly, Young Goodman Brown put all of his faith in her, which made her the best of his worst enemies. Faith's ribbon is a description of her personality or her inner–self. The pink ribbon that Faith wears is a symbol of purity. Faith's ribbon is found in the evil forest when Brown awakes, and that's when Faith is really seen as an unclear person. • 33. Young Goodman Brown Symbolism Essay Young Goodman Brown is a short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Written in 1835, the story deals with a late night meeting between a man and the Devil. On the surface this is all the story is, but if one looks closer one would find the story to be littered with symbolic images. Brown has been married to his wife aptly named Faith, for only three months. Three months is a very short time and this can symbolize that he lacks an attachment to faith. He is willing to stray from his own wife to go on his journey at night. Brown knows that what lies at the end of his journey of the woods is not good, but he only sees it as a one time occasion. Goodman Brown even says to himself "Well; she 's a blessed angel on earth; and after this one night, I 'll ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Come, devil, for thee is this world given." He has given up and welcomes the devil. I think one of the biggest symbols in the story was Satan himself. When we hear the word Satan we think, hell, fire, he it the symbol for ultimate evil and Brown himself continues that tradition. Satan represents a number of things in the story like evil lies within all of us. When Goodman Brown first had a meeting in the woods, Satan is described as an older version of Brown, "apparently in the same rank of life as Goodman Brown, and bearing a considerable resemblance to him, though more in expression than features. Still they might have been taken for father and son." In human form, Satan carries with him, a walking stick in the shape of a snake. Since the story of Adam and Eve, snakes have been symbolic representation of Satan. The story of Young Goodman Brownis one that works on two very different levels. On it 's surface, the story is nothing more than about a man who experiences a quite literally hellish event. When looked at deeper, the story is a much deeper meaning of the importance of faith, and how easily a person can be made or broken by it. Sweat by Zora Neale Hurston is a short story of Delia Jones, a humble, timid woman trapped in a marriage with an abusive cheating man who kind of enjoys mistreating and abusing her. • 34. Symbolism In Pablo Picasso's Snakes Symbolism in "Snakes" Throughout the past, people expressed their emotions, thoughts, or struggles more fully using symbolism through works of arts. For example, Pablo Picasso, an artist known for his "Blue Period" that occurred from 1900 to 1904, expressed his sadness and deep regrets through a series of paintings using different shades of blue after learning about the suicide of his friend ("Pablo Picasso's Blue Period"). Another example is Frida Kahlo, a famous Mexican painter during the 20th century. She showed her pain through a series of paintings of self–portraits, which often had symbolism of physical and psychological wounds ("Frida Kahlo Biography"). People still use symbolism to express their thoughts and feelings or connect with readers through their works of art till this present day. An example of this is an Americanfiction author by the name of Danielle Evans. Evans wrote multiple short stories and debuted it into a collection known as Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self. • 35. Foreshadowing In Young Goodman Brown Young Goodman Brown: Brief Analysis Young Goodman Brown is about a story of a young everyday man and his journey through a darkened forest with a dark and foreboding stranger. The theme of the story is about a test of faith, how one man figuratively abandons his Faith to seek a treacherous task with the dark stranger. His young wife Faith, is an allegory to faith, and his lying to and leaving Faith is a figurative demonstration of Young Goodman Brown literally abandoning his faith in God. There is also a use of foreshadowing in the phrase "There may be a devilish Indian behind every tree ... What if the devil himself should be at my very elbow!" (Hawthorn, 1835). This use of foreshadowing is very important, because this also denotes a shift in the story. This leads me to believe that the events following are just a dream, as it seems that this is a self–fulfilling prophecy. The staff that the man carries is repeatedly referred to, and compared to a snake, a serpent. The serpent is a biblically evil creature; the talking snake in the Garden of Eden was the manipulator of Eve that caused the fall of man. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The detail suggests that Nathaniel Hawthorne purposely makes the old traveler tell Goodman Brown his evil doings, to warn the reader about his evil nature. In the same fashion, the detail proves that the old traveler knows Young Goodman Brown's family during the 1670s. Eventually, both men get on the topic of Faith, Young Goodman's wife of three months. To clarify, the Narrator states, "I would not for twenty old women like that one hobbling before us, that Faith should come to any harm" (263). The detail puts into question how good the traveler knows Faith. Comparatively, the detail questions the traveler's power to make sure no harm comes to Faith. • 37. Personal Narrative: My House By Allison Ree Moga The name given to me on June 23rd, 1998 was Allison Ree Moga, but since then many have referred to me as Alli. My younger brother, sister, and I are the product of a marriage that has since gone wrong. I don't have any allergies, am a bit of a germaphobe, and could do without all of life's drama. That and snakes. I deeply dislike snakes. My nightmares used to include six foot long snakes slithering down my driveway. Daytime relieved me, until I walked around the corner of my house one day and nearly fainted. On the west corner of the house, a skinny garter snake slowly made its ascent up along the siding. The disgusting thing stuck out of my house like a branch on a tree. Horrified, I turned away and almost stepped on Satan himself. A five foot long, PVC pipe thick, rat snake challenged me with his forked tongue. In response, I let out a blood curdling scream and ran into the house to dial my dad. At ten years old, I prepared myself for death. One simply does not live through a snake sighting. On the third ring, Dad answered my tears with, "Well, go get a shovel. You're bigger than he is." With a little more confidence, I wiped away my fears and set out to the west side of the walk. Shovel in hand, I scanned the ground until I found him. Essay On Symbolism In Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown Symbolism in Young Goodman Brown In the short story, "young Goodman brown," by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author elaborately unveils an allegorical piece of work through his extensive use of symbolism. The story in itself takes us in a literal as well as figurative journey through a transitional state in a man's spiritual life. Our protagonist Young Goodman browngoes through this transitional state as he is ripped away from previously held ideals and religious beliefs. The strategic use of specific characters, objects, and places are all put together to convey a frame of meaning beyond just their literal sense. We first see our set of symbolic components at the beginning of the story a Goodman brown walks away from his beloved faith. Although subtle at first, as the story develops one can come to the conclusion that faith beyond her physical self represents individual faith in the individual. Another symbolic character we come across with is the old man in the forest. As he lures Goodman brown deeper into a forest of doubt, the old man and his staff become the ultimate tool to drive the young man away from his faith and religion. Beyond his physical description, the old man seems to portray an image of universal evil, and the devil himself. In addition to the use of certain key characters, Hawthorne expresses symbolism through a couple inanimate objects. The pink ribbons in faith's cap portray an overall sense of innocence and purity. On the other hand, the staff with "the likeness of a black snake" portrays all that is opposite to purity and innocence. it is the staff that allows brown to experience the world through darkened eyes, a world in which even the holiest ones turn to ... Jurassic Park Quotes In the novel jurassic park there are many consequences that affected many people on the island of Isla Nublar one of the many reasons the consequences were so large and impactful because they were dealing with animals that were around 247 million years ago. They had to find and use strands of DNA from frogs and petrified tree sap which made them able to breed because frogs can change their sex to be able to have offspring. Also because of the dinosaurs being able to breed there was more dinosaurs then the people thought were on the island. Because there was more dinosaurs they were escaping and they didn't realize because the computer was only programed to count the original number of dinosaurs and it didn't account for the new ones that were appearing and living on the island. While on the tour through Jurassic Park Lex spots two juvenile velociraptors on one of the supply ships escaping from the island it shows that the dinosaurs are breeding because they only had adult velociraptors in the park but they found the two juveniles which made them investigate further into the breeding and how many dinosaurs are now on the island and how their breeding. Goodman Brown Allegory Hannah Barney English 11 27 January 16 Young Goodman Brown Quickwrite Throughout the short story titled Young Goodman Brown, Hawthorne uses allegories and symbolism to introduce and present a theme. The overall theme of this short story is that curiosity leads to temptation and sin even with people that are innocent. By using strong symbols, it creates a realization of what the message of the story is. One symbol, the pink ribbon, exemplifies this idea. The pink ribbon symbolizes purity, and how Faith is perfect and innocent, never doing anything wrong. Hawthorne describes Faith and her pink ribbons, stating, "with the pink ribbons, gazing anxiously forth, and bursting with such joy at the sight of him" (Hawthorne 67). The color of Faith's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The serpentine staff plays a significance in the short story, as the animal on the staff resembles a snake. Snakes are usually thought of as 'cunning', 'sneaky' and 'sly'. More importantly, snakes are pictured as loathsome and dangerous in the bible, and in christian religions. They are also associated with Satan. In the bible, snakes are mentioned in the story of Adam and Eve. The snake was used by satan to trick and tempt Eve into disobeying God. In short the bible states, ' "But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." ' (Genesis 3:1–24). By using the snake as the animal on the staff, Hawthorne is able to create the image that the staff is satanic, and associated with evil and the devil. To illustrate, the text explains, ' "The devil!" screamed the pious old lady. "Then Goody Cloyse knows her old friend?" observed the traveller, confronting her and leaning on his writhing stick.' (Hawthorne 60). The descriptive imagery of the staff explains the association with the devil, as the traveler talks about his encounters with young goodman brown's grandfather and father. The traveler, with his serpentine staff ,tempts Brown to keep going into the forest of Salem village, the place where the Witchcraft trials took place. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
