Groundbreaking Piece in the New York Magazine of 1915...
In February 1915, the New York magazine, The Smart Set: A Magazine of Cleverness, featured a piece called, The Flapper. This was the first time a
magazine had ever shown the rebellious young girl who wore short dresses and skirts in the 1920's. The magazine described the flapper as "A
charming creature!" (The Smart Set : A Magazine of Cleverness) and continued to boast the reputation of theflapper by portraying her as educated and
mysterious. The magazine Vanity Fair soon followed in September of 1921, but this magazine demolished the reputation of the flapper girl. "Why
aren't they at home?" (Panzini "The Flapper – a New Type: September 1921) the magazine and the majority of people asked. The article then described
how the image of the flapper girl is distinguishing a mother from her daughter by the way they acted and dressed.
The image of a flapper girl was not just in the United States, for Germany and France had the flapper girl as an icon. The term for flapper girl in
Germany is, der Backfish, and in French it is l'IngГ©nue. (The Smart Set : A Magazine of Cleverness) Before the flapper girl, there was the era of
Victorian fashion, the role of women before World War One, and the role of women during World War One. Post World War One, the focus on the
image of women in society skyrocketed through every day flapper girls and through publicized flapper girls such as famous actresses Clara Bow and
Louise Brooks. In the 1920's, opportunities expanded dramatically for women,

Mommie Dearest
Joan Crawford, a widely known 1900s American television star was not the totally loving and nurturing mother she was made out to be. During her
time, her country looked up to her as a successful actress and affectionate mother of five adopted children. After her death, her oldest daughter,
Christina, wrote a revealing memoir called Mommie Dearest, conveying the brutal reality of what is was like to live in the psychotic star's home. In
the movie, Joan Crawford possessed various, obvious signs of personality disorders, specifically portrayed by her abusiveness towards Christina.
Crawford had several marriages and affairs, all of which were to help her get to "the top" and attain all fame and fortune. In the end, the movie showed

People who acquire this personality disorder are obsessed with making their life orderly, perfect, and controlled. In the beginning of the movie,
Joan Crawford washes herself very thoroughly with soap, scrubbers, hot water, then cold water. She obsessively cleans her home with more help
from maids and scolds them if they do not get every space spotless. Later in the movie, she freaks out on her daughter once she discovers she is
using wire hangers for her expensive dresses as opposed to the luxurious, padded ones that she prefers. Another personality disorder of Joan
Crawford's is histrionic personality disorder. This disorder is described as "a mental condition in which people act in a very emotional and dramatic
way that draws attention to themselves." (Berger) Symptoms of this disorder include wanting to be the center of all attention and success, but
blaming others for one's own failure or disappointments. Joan Crawford persistently seeks attention from her boyfriends and husbands. She blames
her Hollywood downfalls on the scripts, photographers, cameras, and even the mayor. She often gets married for the press so that she can get on
television and radios, and she takes her daughter's role in a television show because she is jealous of her growing

The Election of 1824 Essay
The election of 1824 is one of the most unique and interesting elections in American history. The four candidates in the election were William
Crawford, Henry Clay, John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Jackson. They were all from the Jacksonian Republican Party.
William H. Crawford was very experienced in politics. Before running for president in 1824, he was James Monroe's secretary of war and he was also
secretary of treasury under Monroe and James Madison. He also served in congress as an U.S. Senator from Georgia. He was a minister to France from
1813 thru 1815. Prior to the election of 1824, Crawford had a stroke and was nearly blinded. Despite his health, the Congressional caucuses selected

After leaving the House, he served in the Senate. In the war of 1812, Jackson became one the major generals of the war and he became the national hero
of the war when he defeated the British at the Battle of New Orleans. After this battle people nationwide started calling him "Old Hickory."3 Jackson
said his main concern if he was president would be the internal improvements to the nation to guarantee national defense and he claimed adherence to a
"judicious tariff."4
John Quincy Adams, the son of former president John Adams, had a very rich political background prior to the election of 1824. In 1803, he was
elected to the senate. He spent a few years in the senate, and then in 1809, James Madison appointed Adams his minister to St. Petersburg. He helped
to bring about the end of The War of 1812 by help negotiate the Treaty of Ghent in 1814. After the war was over he became the minister to London in
1815. Then in 1817, James Monroe appointed Adams his secretary of state.5 Adams supported protective tariffs and federal programs that were
intended for internal improvements. He was also had a much more formal manner than the other candidates.6
As for the election, Andrew Jackson had the most popular votes with 153,544. John Quincy Adams came in second with 108,740. Coming in third and
fourth respectively were William Crawford and Henry Clay. Crawford had 46,618 votes and Clay had 47,136.

The School Of A Single School Corporation
It the past, many school corporations have consolidated, which has caused many small– town schools like Johnson township in Eckerty indiana, to

Johnson Township held all kinds of kids in one room even though they had different ages and grades. The classroom accommodated kids from first

(List) Instead of the children switching classes, the teachers had to move rooms. The kids ages ranged from 8 to 16. It did not even matter what

President Andrew Jackson Essay
President AJ Andrew Jackson was born in 1767, and grew up in the border of North and South Carolina. He attended frontier schools and acquired the
reputation of being fiery–tempered and willing to fight all comers. He also learned to read, and he was often called on by the community to read aloud
the news from the Philadelphia papers.
In 1775, with the beginning of the American Revolution, Andrew Jackson, then only 13 years old became an orderly andmessenger. He took part in the
Battle of Hanging Rock against the British and in a few small skirmishes with British sympathizers known as Loyalists or Tories. His brother Hugh was
killed, and when the British raided Waxhaw, both he and Robert were captured. Because Jackson refused to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After one year in the, Jackson moved to the Senate, the other chamber of the Congress of the United States. He served from September 1797 to April
1798 and then retired to private life.
During the years of 1804 to 1812, Jackson settled, with his wife in his home – retiring indefinately. Although Jackson was active in local politics, he
took little interest in national affairs. The one exception was his brief involvement with the so–called Burr conspiracy. Former Vice President Aaron
Burr, determined to restore his personal fortunes, convinced Jackson that he had government backing to lead a filibustering expedition into Mexico.
Jackson agreed to build him some boats, but when he realized that Burr and his group were acting entirely on their own, he immediately dropped his
connection with the scheme. Jackson's hot temper involved him in a number of feuds and duels. Many of them were caused by remarks made about
his marriage. The duel with Charles Dickinson in 1806 stands out as an example of Jackson's characteristic refusal even to acknowledge the
possibility of defeat. Jackson let his opponent fire first, because Dickinson was a faster and better shot. Allowing himself time to take deliberate aim,
Jackson planned to kill his man with a single bullet, even "if he had shot me through the brain." Thus, Jackson took a bullet in the chest and, without
flinching, calmly killed his man. Jackson was also

Joan Crawford's Personality Disorders
"No wire hangers!" What would be a normal thing to find in an average persons home is not accepted in Joan Crawford's home. This posses the
question why in the movie Mommie Dearest does Mrs. Crawford have a dilemma with wire hangers in her closet? Why does she have so many mental
complications in general? Although to the public, Joan seems like a striving successful actress she obviously has some underlying issues. She has
developed her personality disorders her whole life, but how she got them is a mystery. Most people develop personality disorders from their parents or
how they are raised. This is most likely the case with Joan Crawford, but no one really knows since she is diseased. Joan has four major personality
disorders within the movie; Obsessive–compulsive, Bipolar, Borderline, and Narcissistic personality disorder. Obsessive–compulsive disorder was the
disorder most evident within Joan's personality, throughout, the movie. This disorder demands perfection, and that's in everything. There are often
ridiculous rules within the household, and often times the home will be perfectly clean. For example, in the movie Joan blows a gasket on her daughter
Christina, because, Joan finds a wire hanger in her closet. This shouldn't be a humongous situation, but it is, and the end result Christina gets beaten
with wire hangers. Another scene from the movie shows Joan eating raw steak, and trying to make Christina eat it as well. Christina thinks the raw
steak is disgusting,

Personality Disorders In 'Mommie Dearest'
"But Nobody ever said life was fair. Tina." The movie Mommie Dearest is based on a true story. Actress Joan Crawford suffers from many
personality disorders. Personality disorders are patterns of inflexible traits that disrupt social life or work and may distress the affected individual
(Rathus, 2010). Today I will use the Movie Mommie Dearest and help show specific scenes from the movie that demonstrates these disorders that Joan
had.
One of the mood disorders that Joan showed was Bipolar Disorder. Bipolar disorder is when your mood changes from depression to really excited or
happy very quickly and back to extreme angriness again (Rathus, 2010). When Christina is swimming in the pool and her mom wants to race her but
she is really tired and doesn't want to swim anymore her mom forces Christina to race her. Joan ends up winning every time and Christina doesn't like

People with this disorder believe they deserve excessive admiration. They show little empathy to toward other people (Rathus, 2010). At Christina's
birthday party Joan hires a bunch of photographers to take pictures of her. She makes them take pictures of her and Christiana opening presents and
tries to show the media that she is a perfect mom. She constantly has to have admiration from her fans and signs thousands of pictures of herself to
send to her fans. Joan thinks that she is the best actress in the world and no one is better than her. Another symptom of narcissistic behavior is being in
love with the way things look not how they feel. When the Crawford family gets interviewed on the radio during Christmas Joan acts like her family
is the perfect American family and she always wants her fans to think her children give all their other presents to children in need. She wants her
family to look perfect for the media. It may look perfect but nobody knows what the children are going through and what they are feeling (Koontz &

They did what others would not ever think of doing in this time period. From coast to coast people were reading the exploits of a new type of

the traditional role of women. Women were the guardians of morality. They were made of finer stuff than men. They were expected to act accordingly.

Rhetorical Analysis of the Ugly Truth About Beauty

Rehtorical Analsysis of "The Ugly Truth About Beauty" There is a clichГ© quote that people say, "Beauty is in the eye of beholder." But in the essay
"The Ugly Truth About Beauty" (1998) Dave Barry argues about how women who spend countless hours on their so called "beauty" whereas men
seem not to care. Barry uses juxtaposition and exaggeration to poke fun at men and women behavior and shed light on the harm that the beauty
industry is doing. When Barry argues his point of his essay he addresses both genders, but more specifically teenage to middle age men and women,
but he writes about it in a humorous and light–hearted manner. In the essay, Barry juxtaposes men ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As for the oppsoite sex, women, would spend on average five thousand hours on their fingernails, which in most cases go unnoticed. The only reason
that women care this much about their appearance is because of the standards that the beauty industry has set, which is very difficult to actually
achieve and causes problems for the health of women. Such as annerexia, depression and other serious health concerns. Not only does Barry uses
juxtapositon he also use exaggeration to argue his views. Barry uses exaggeration to add a sesnse of humor to the essay. He exaggerates the Barbie
doll proportions giving her a height of seven feet and eighty–one pounds with fifty–three of those pounds being bosoms. He also exaggerates mens
complacency with their apperance even "if their faces cause heart failure in cattle at a range of 300 yards, and when their faces sag and their noses
bloat to the size of eggplants and their eyebrows grow together to form what appears to be a giant forehead–dwelling tropical caterpillar." With these
exaggerations he shows how women are willing to try and be like something that is very hard to achieve, even though they have already achieved
their goals in the eyes of men and others. He shows how men are careless about their appearance, even though they may look horrendous; they care
more about manly activities. As you can see Barry really used juxtaposition and

Fashion in the 1920's Essay
Fashion in the 1920's
The Roaring Twenties brought many fads and fashion rages. During the 1920's, Americans were given the honor of being called the "best– dressed".
Several things contributed to this honor: Affordable pricing, mass production clothing, the birth of the "flapper girl", and rise of fashionable movie stars
that Americans wanted to imitate.
The style and cut of women's clothing during the 1920's changed drastically. Waistlines dropped dramatically while hemlines rose scandalously.
Turned–down hose were no longer black, but beige. Rouged knees, bobbed hair, and figureless figures characterized the "radical flappers". These
women violated many of the rules dictating appropriate clothing and behavior for women. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The "flapper girl" trend peaked in 1926, leaving materials such as silk, chiffons, georgettes, crepes, and voiles in high demand. Beads, sequins, and
feathers also adorned the fashionable dresses. Coco Chanel, a role model for the flapper, provided many styles, including the popular single strand
of pearls. Corsets were no longer popular, but instead the "sexless" figure was favored. Scarfs were often draped over the shoulders if one could not
afford a dead fox neck piece. However, the one thing that distinguished the flapper from anyone else was the bobbed haircut. Although, efforts were
made to revive long hair, the bob remained stylish.
The fashionable flapper remained throughout the 20s, until the craze faded away with the oncoming 30s. The fads and rages of the flappers left an
impression on Americans for years to come. These radical women, who were considered immoral and distasteful, remain symbolic of the famous
Roaring 20s.
The flapper fashion was borrowed by many of the women who lived in the 1920's. But as it is with every fashion craze, there are many different
examples. The pictures that follow show some of the other clothing items that were characteristic of the 1920's. This beautiful velvet dress and jacket
would have been worn for an evening on the town, as would this satin hat. The purple velvet dress below also is representative of the period. These

The Impact of Television on American Society Essay
The Impact of Television on American Society
What role does television play in society? For decades we have seen many parts of our world rapidly going through changes in technology. Today's
society has been transformed by means of communication and the available information through mass media. Most Americans rely on television for
news, sports, and entertainment. Television is just one of the many examples of how technology has changed our lives. Since the invention of the
television in the early 1900's, it has played a very important role in our lives. Having a television set in the home has become very essential in today's
society. We depend on it to entertain us with its sitcoms and to inform us about current world issues. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another way television misleads its viewers is by the way that they present candidates for an election of politicians. They spend all their time and
money trying to put together a commercial that only puts down the other candidate. How are voters supposed to know whom to vote for if all
they are presented with is negative ideas about each candidate? Television also tries to persuade us to vote for a certain proposition. Voters are also
lured into voting for or against a proposition by listening to the music being played in the background of the commercial. An example of this type of
situation may be the campaign on proposition 5 dealing with the Indian Casinos. They play sad, and convincing, music in the background of their
commercial so the viewers can soften their hearts and vote "yes" on their proposition. Television is powerful enough to make our shopping easier.
Actually, it is making us lazier. TV stations such as the Home Shopping Network make shopping as easy as dialing some numbers on a touch tone
phone. People are also convinced to buy a certain product because a celebrity is presenting it. For example: if supermodel Cindy Crawford presents
make–up, ladies will buy it and wear it because they believe that it will make them look like her. As a television viewer myself, I believe that television
has us all trapped in a world where we believe everything that is being said. As

Essay about The Search for a Home in Jane Austen's...
Jane Austen's Mansfield Park is a novel obsessed with home and family. It
begins a story of one family, three sisters, and quickly expands to a story of
three families, the Bertrams, the Prices, and the Norrises. Family upon family
is added, each one growing, expanding, and moving until the novel is crowded
with characters and estates. An obsession with movement creates an overall
feeling of displacement and confusion. Fanny Price is moved from Portsmouth to

A "gentleman's residence" is "comfortable" and fitting (219). For the
homeless Fanny, self is not defined. With no home, she has no self. She must,
therefore, grow into Mansfield Park before asserting selfhood. As Fanny defines
and redefines "home," she is able to define herself and ultimately fit into
Mansfield Park and the family it represents.
At her arrival, Mansfield Park is clearly no home to Fanny.
Displaced from her home in Portsmouth, Fanny is almost a not–Fanny. The initial
description of her is marked by negation. There is "not . . . much in her first
appearance" though "nothing to disgust" (9). She has "no glow of complexion,
nor any other striking beauty" (9). She is "awkward" but "not vulgar" (9). The
negatives (not, nothing, no, nor) reduce Fanny to nothingness. The modifiers,
too, are diminutive. Though Fanny is not much younger than Julia and Maria, she
is described as "just ten years old" and "small of her age" (9). She is
"timid," "shy," "shrinking from notice" (9), all words that reflect deficiency.
The Miss Bertrams feed off of this diminishment, "increasing from their cousin's
shyness" (10). Fanny's self threatens to dissolve altogether. After meeting
the Bertrams and seeing the display of a "remarkably fine family," who were "all
at home" (10), Fanny finds herself "longing for the

The Case For Working With Your Hands By Mathew B. Crawford
Why is it that in today's society people only think that a person can be successful if they have a degree from a higher education? In the article "The
Case for Working With Your Hands" author Mathew B. Crawford talks about his life as a mechanic and the decisions and revelations that got him there.
Crawford claims that a good job can be defined to meet an individual's passions and to see the "effects of the world" (Crawford). Crawford is saying
that a person does not have to have a degree to have a good job. With Crawford's claim, in the article titled "The Case for Working With Your
Hands," that a person should find a job that satisfies their own passions and desires I would agree with the author's stance based on my own
personal experiences as well as his information he presents. To start off, the article "The Case for Working With Your Hands" is about Matthew
B. Crawford and his decision to start a car repair shop after getting his Ph. D in political philosophy. Crawford starts off the article by discussing a
television show called "Deadliest Catch," and how in today's society many people can never see the effects they are having in their career. He goes
on by creating a stance that in today's society many people assume that a student must attend a college or university to achieve a overall success
instead of following their "own inclinations" (Crawford, Matthew). Crawford talks about how he chose to open up a motorcycle shop to work as a
mechanic instead of getting a

Narcissism: Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disor
About 1 in 100 people have Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder, OCPD (International OCD Foundation, 2010), and when the person has this
disorder they can have trouble in their personal relationships. In their work life they do an exceptional job in whatever it is they do, but to their
co–workers and boss they can be mean. In the public's eyes they are the best person to have ever lived, but to their close friends and acquaintances
they can be a cruel individual. Many times a person with OCPD can be a Narcissist. Narcissism is when an individual believe that they should be

low self–esteem, does not respond positively towards criticism and critiques. Also they manipulate people into getting whatever they want. In the award

Can Officers Effectively Prosecute Domestic Violence...
When prosecuting criminal domestic violence cases too many officers constructed their entire case only on statements made by the victim. However,
"victims of domestic violence are more likely than victims of other violent crime to recant or refuse to cooperate in prosecutorial efforts" (Breitenbach,
2008, p. 1256). Officers must consider that victims of domestic violence may refuse to testify because of fear of retaliation, intimidation, financial
dependence, emotional attachment, and/or because they reunited with the batterer. If the victim refused to testify during court, their statement against
the abuser becomes hearsay evidence. Several recent cases have had a huge influence on how those statements and hearsay evidence may be ... Show

Thus, any out of court statements made by witnesses and/or victims to law enforcement must be excluded unless the defendant had prior opportunity to
cross–examine the unavailable witnesses (Byrom, 2005). The only non–testimonial statements that would be utilized in court, without direct testimony
from the witness and/or complainant, were the taped 911 phone calls reporting the incident. If the victim testified, their previous statements would be
allowed as evidence without limitation because the witness was subjected to cross–examination. However, if the victim refused to testify, any
testimonials made to law enforcement were not allowed as evidence in the court proceedings.
In light of these legal changes, officers needed to construct their domestic violence cases under the assumption that the victim would not be
participating in the prosecution. The case commenced at the time the call was received by dispatch up until the case was presented to a judge or jury.
Therefore, officers needed to complete the proper procedures to secure recordings of the calls made to the 911 dispatch center to report the domestic
situation. In addition to having the subject, victim and/or witnesses complete written and/or video statements, the officer must diligently identify,
collect, and photograph evidence at the crime scene (Ellison, 2002). This required officers to visit the victim several days later to photograph bruising,
because some bruising

The Era of Wonderful Nonsense
The 1920's is sometimes referred to as the "Roaring Twenties," or "The Era of Wonderful Nonsense." The nonsense this phrase is referring to is the
style and boldness of the new kind of rebel: the flapper. In the 1920's the flappers shocked everyone and set the path for other people who yearned to
stand out and be different. The flappers certainly contrasted the generation before them, but that did not happen overnight. There are many reasons
credited as to why flappers started rebelling, but one of the major ones was WWI. The women decided that most of the eligible bachelors were dead or
at war, meaning that there were not enough men to go around. When those men had gone off to war, they left their jobs, meaning that someone had to

Some of these things were so improper that women were arrested for smoking in public even though smoking was not illegal. Flappers took every
chance they could to make things scandalous. The style of flappers was one of the most controversial things about them. Before the Roaring Twenties,
dresses that went above the middle of the calf muscle were unheard of, let alone just–below or just–above the knee. These new dress lengths horrified
older generations. Along with the dress, she would wear a "step–in, a single piece of lingerie that took the place of the stiff–boned corset" (Gourley 62).
Because of this, the flappers could maneuver more freely. The dresses were not the only reason for this. Another new concept the flappers
shocked the world with was short, bobbed hair. Long hair represented elegance and respect, but "flappers had no time for elaborate hairdos"
(Fashion . . . through the Ages 1). Many of them would wear their hair in small waves called "marcels," named after the man who invented them,
Marcel Greateau. Sometimes they would pin the hair back with another new invention called a bobby pin, which is still in use today. The shorter
hair added to the "boyish look" that the flappers wanted. They would also wear newsboy caps and bras that made their chests look smaller, because
big chests were considered ladylike. The flappers liked to believe that they were the complete opposite of ladylike. The center of attention was the
desired goal. Everyone

Henry Clay: The Great Compromiser Henry Clay is probably the most famous Congressman to have never been elected President. He was known
as the Great Compromiser, and was a member of the Congress for 40 years. Clay was a member of the "Great Triumvirate" along with Daniel
Webster and John C. Calhoun. In his time in Washington he ran for president 5 times, but was never successful. He founded the Whig party, and was
instrumental in defining the issues of the second party system. He also served as the Secretary of State and Speaker of the House of Representatives.
In 1957 he was voted as one of the 5 greatest senators by a committee headed up by John F. Kennedy.(1)(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Clay)

the age of 29 Clay got his first taste of action on the national political stage when he was elected to the United States Senate on November 19, 1806
to replace Senator John Adair. He served in the Senate until March 19 1807, when he was still under the constitutionally mandated age of 30. Clay
returned to the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1808, and was elected Speaker a year later in 1809. Henry Clay was elected again to the
Senate to fill the vacancy left when Buckner Thruston resigned on January 14 1810. He Served there until his successful bid for a seat in the
United States House of Representatives in 1812 as a Democratic Republican. On the first day of the session 34 year old clay was selected as the
Speaker of the House of Representatives, a feat that has never before or since been accomplished.(1) During the next 14 years he was elected to the

made it a position of power almost equal to that of the President of the United States. He appointed members of his War Hawk group

Essay about Freedom of the Flapper
Partying, drinking, and dancing; these are the adjectives most commonly associated with the life of a flapper. While these descriptions are accurate,
they do not inform people of the advantages and gains flappers made for the female gender. The flapper embodied the idea of freedom from the usual
duties of a young female in the 1920s. These women were no longer tied down with the expectation that they immediately become a wife and mother,
as well as being conservative and modest. By diving into a look at the fashion, music, and lifestyle of the flapper during the 1920s it will become
obvious that they were not only independent, liberated, and enjoying many more freedoms than they had previously throughout history, but that they

However, it is in their style where they contrast the most greatly with the women of the 1920s. They wore long skirts and dresses which hugged their
curves and their hair was long. The look of the flapper was drastically different from that of the earlier generations of women in the United States.
Their hair was cut into a short "bob" and they wore much more make–up than previous women. The hem line of the flapper's dresses rose to the knee
and they began "bounding" their chests and wearing high heels. Along with the rise of the hem line, nude colored stockings were favored over the
former black; the flapper also bared her arms; this gave off a much more "naked" look than any previous generations. They did away with the corset
and instead adopted the girdle, which simply flattened the abdomen rather than emphasizing the waist. The infamous Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel's
clothing designs became the epitome of 1920's style.1 Flappers who enjoyed dancing and jazz music were referred to as "jazz babies". The music of
the 1920s included ragtime, blues, and jazz; all of which were considered to be an American art.2 However, it is jazz music that resonated most
thoroughly with the flapper. Jazz was an extremely different type of music for this era in comparison to that of their parents. This new music was loud
and sultry with innovative and unusual rhythms; it was seen as being a bad influence which led to an increase in the

Davis V. Washington ( 2006.
Courts handle some pretty complex cases on a daily basis and rely on their previous knowledge of cases and on previous cases themselves to help
them decide cases. This is a practice that goes on across the land. Issues such as hearsay, best evidence, mental capacity, and many others come into
play while the judge is presiding over the case. Attorney's need to monitor these things as well, and need to object to certain things within the
allotted time frames. There needs to be set standards that are followed, and the Federal Rules of Evidence (FRE), State Rules of Evidence, and any
common law practices are out there to assist and direct proceedings on the do's and do not's of the trial process. These rules state what may be allowed

When the police arrived, they were able to observe her shaken state, with fresh injuries on her forearm and her face. They also observed the frantic
state she was in while she was trying to gather belongings and her children so they could leave. The State charged Davis with a felony violation. The
State's only witnesses were the two police officers who responded to the 911 call. Both officers testified that McCottry exhibited injuries that appeared
to be recent, but neither officer could testify as to the cause of the injuries. McCottry presumably could have testified as to whether Davis was her
assailant, but she did not appear. Over Davis's objection, based on the Confrontation Clause of the Sixth Amendment, the trial court admitted the
recording of her exchange with the 911 operator, and the jury convicted him (Davis v. Washington, 2012). Davis appealed to the Washington Court of
Appeals and then to the Supreme Court of Washington. It is here that we will focus time on how the decisions were made affirming Davis' conviction.
Davis appealed based on the Confrontation Clause of the Sixth Amendment. The judge at this time would need to look at the Sixth Amendment and
base the decision off of that information. The Sixth Amendment states: In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and
public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall

The Case For Working With Your Hands By Mathew B. Crawford
Why is it that in today's society, people merely believe that a person can be successful if they have a degree from a higher education? In the article
"The Case for Working With Your Hands" author Mathew B. Crawford talks about his life as a mechanic and the decisions and revelations that got him
there. Crawford claims that a good job is defined to meet an individual's passion and to see the "effects of the world" (Crawford).
Crawford starts off the article by discussing a
television show called "Deadliest Catch," and how in today's society, many people can never see the effects they are having in their career. He goes
on by creating a stance that in today's society, many people will assume that a student must attend a college or university to achieve an overall success
instead of following their "own inclinations" (Crawford, Matthew). Crawford talks about how he chose to open up a motorcycle shop to work as a
mechanic instead of

Mommie Dearest Quotes
Mommie Dearest was a best selling memoir, turned into a bio–drama motion picture. The book was released in 1978 and the movie was released in
1981. The memoir was written by Christina Crawford, adopted daughter of actress Joan Crawford. Christina recounts her childhood and claims that she
and her siblings were physically and emotionally abused by their alcoholic mother. This movie primarily follows the relationship between Christina and
Joan.
Joan Crawford was in her late 20's or early 30's when the film begins. She was an Oscar–winning actress with a high reputation of perfection to uphold.
Joan is a beautiful, hard working, self confident, perfectionist who will do anything to get her way. Joan displays symptoms of narcissistic personality ...

Joan wins the race and Christina childishly reacts by stating that the race was unfair because of their age and size difference. Joan responds by
saying, "Ah, but no one ever said that life is fair, Tina. I am bigger and I am faster. I will always beat you". In this one statement, Joan portrays
multiple narcissistic character traits. Such as, having a superiority complex, wanting to be admired, and showing no empathy toward her young
daughter. She also proves that she wants to be admired and that she is worthy of love when she asks Christina "Why can't you give me the respect
that I'm entitled to? Why can't you treat me like I would be treated by any stranger on the street?" Joan continually fails to acknowledge others needs
and interests. When Christina starts to assert herself and her opinions, she is sent off to boarding school. When Christina was a teenager, she was
caught in a compromising scenario with a boy from her boarding school. Although the headmistress of the school says that it was innocent and both
children have been properly punished, Joan pulls Christina out of the school and calls the school a "teenage brothel", belittling the school and the

The Men Of The 1824 Election
The Men of the 1824 Election The political climate of 1824 was turbulent, a dynamic and would alter the history of the United States of America for
the foreseeable future. "The 1824 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION marked the final collapse of the Republican–Federalist political framework. For the
first time no candidate ran as a Federalist, while five significant candidates competed as Democratic–Republicans." (ushistory.org) James Monroe was
the President of the United States of America (P.O.T.U.S) at the time and was dealing with other European Countries Claiming land in the area of what
is now the Continental United States of America; at the same time the Native Americans and the topic of slavery where a hot bed for trouble. President
Monroe needed to put a stop to the European over reach across the world. Monroe in 1823 formulated a declaration of principles on South America,
known in later years as the Monroe Doctrine. Warning that the "American Continents where free and independent are henceforth not to be considered
for colonization by and European power. Any attempt would be regarded as the manifestation of an unfriendly disposition toward the United states."

Women In Advertising
Jean Kilbourne (2010) in the video Killing Us Softly 4: Advertising's image of women pointed out that people always assume the women in
advertisements have the perfect look and a good figure. Many women even feel ashamed when they failed to achieve ideal beauty and retain slim
figure after they saw the advertisements. I agree with her idea that the advertisement depict women in a very dangerous way. Many people started to
judge women by perfect look and slim figure. These kinds of advertisements may do harm to women's health mentally and physically, especially to
teenagers, when they are trying to achieve perfect appearance as perfect women depicted in advertisements.
Everyone cares about how he or she look and wants to have a good figure. Today, a good appearance can even leave a good impression to other
people. However, nobody is perfect. I think nobody has a perfect face and retain flawless forever. The perfect women in advertisements and
magazines have good make up that make them look flawless and slim. Some pictures were photoshoped to show the audience how good their
products work. Like Jean Kilbourne (2010) said in the video Killing Us Softly 4: Advertising's image of women that the supermodel Cindy Crawford
once said I wish I looked like Cindy Crawford. Thus, even the supermodels and actress do not believe in their pictures and advertisements. They know
they are not as perfect as what is depicting in the advertisement. They also pursue the ideal beauty and wish to

The Flappers Of The 1920s
Flappers What is a flapper? The flapper is one of the most essential parts of the 1920s. They represented a new type of woman. Whether in attitude,
attire, or slang. The 1920s flapper demonstrated how women could transform into something that is a part of the modern construction of women's
identity. The flapper was a major part of "The Roaring Twenties". The flapper was how young women sought to define themselves. Prior to the 1920s
American women were seen in a very traditional light. They were meant to stay in the backgrounds of their husbands. Their dresses were meant to
cover all the parts of their bodys. Women were told to follow the traditional and subservient roles. With the ending of World War 1, Europe was in
ruins, America became seen as the center of the world's stage.
The war caused many American women to take factory jobs as result of the men enlisting in the war effort. They took these jobs because once the
husband left there was no source of income coming to the family. So the women had to go to work to receive income to feed their families. Also, they
started to work at the factories so they could make guns, bombs, food, and clothes to send to the troops in Europe who were fighting in the war.
The 19th Amendment was passed in 1920 by the United States Constitution that allowed women the right to vote. On November 2, 1920 more than 8
million women across the United States voted in elections for the first time. It took

The Harms Of Plagiarism In 'Finding Forrester'
In the movie "Finding Forrester" , it's main focus was to imply the word "Plagiarism" into the acts of the main character Jamal Wallace. This plays a
role later into the movie in which he is assumed to have plagiarized the work of William Forrester a famous writer. Although the movie promotes the
harms of plagiarism it also tells a good story about a friendship amongst two strangers. Throughout the movie Jamal Wallace developes a friendship
with William Forrester that starts to become more than just writing sessions in an apartment. They begin to find a friendship within themselves due to
their same abilities as writer, and begin to trust one another in keeping secrets solely just inside Forrester's apartment. Both characters really show the
true meaning of what a friendship should be between two people no matter if they have the same interest or are different from one another. Jamal is a
kid from the Bronx who is shown to be an African American student that seems to be an average student that receives C's in his classes. From the
town he is from many people believe that during this time a guy who is African American was not educated and would not go far in anything they
do but to be in jail. For Jamal at the age of 16 he didn't believe that he had a plan of what he wanted in life so he lived as if he was a regular kid
going to school. Jamal lived up to the belief at that time that African Americans were not intelligent enough and lacked ambition to make
something of themselves. He pretends to be much less than he truly is capable of being and doesn't feel like he needs to express how well of a
writer he can be. Although he portrays this character of being an average student at his school his test results shows that anyone can be smart and
can be there true self once they truly find what they want in there future. After Jamal gets to know William Forrester, and begins to learn the true
meaning behind writing and he begins to find his true self through his writing and who he is as a person. He begins to love the passion writing has to
offer after being taught the true meaning of why William Forrester wrote books. But through his passion for writing also came the setback of

Confrontation Clause
In the United States criminal justice system, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty. With this concept in mind, the accused are given
many rights to a fair trial. One of those rights falls under the sixth amendment in the United States Constitution. The confrontation clause reads, "In all
criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right...to be confronted with the witnesses against him." West's Encyclopedia of American Law
defines the confrontation clause as, "A fundamental right of a defendant in a criminal action to come face–to–face with an adverse witness in the
court's presence so the defendant has a fair chance to object the testimony of the witness, and the opportunity to cross–examine him or her" (Lehman &

The court treats sex abuse cases, where young children are victims differently. In 1990, the case Maryland v. Craig permitted young children to testify
by the use of one–way, closed circuit televisions out of the courtroom, under certain circumstances. The Supreme Court concluded that children's
psychological well–being outweighed the accused entitlement to face–to–face confrontation (Parise, 1991, p. 1099).
In the past few years several cases have enforced a more comprehensive meaning to the confrontation clause. Such cases are Crawford v. Washington,
Melendez–Diaz v. Massachusetts, and Davis v. Washington. In 2004, the landmark case Crawford v. Washington, involved an assault where the
defendant Michael Crawford, got into an altercation involving a knife with another male over his wife. During the arrest, the police taped both Michael
and his wife statements. The prosecution used his wife's damaging statement, as she was unwilling to testify against her husband, during his trial and
Crawford was convicted (Friedman, p. 440). Subsequently, the case made it to the United States Supreme Court and they overturned the 1980 decision
in Ohio v. Roberts. Justice Scalia wrote, "Out–of–court statements were admissible only when the witness was unavailable to testify and the defendant
had been able to cross–examine the witness on a previous occasion" (Supreme Court: Right to Confront Witnesses Strengthened, 2004). Under the

Sylvia's story was tape–recorded (Id.). This tape recording was used in court because she was barred from testifying in court through use of a marital

Analysis Of `` Killing Us Softly 4 `` By Jean Kilbourne
Whether we realize it or not, we are constantly surrounded by advertisements. On average, we are exposed to approximately 3,000 ads per day,
through logos, billboards, and television commercials, even our choices of brands. But in today's society, one of the most used and influential tools of
advertising are women. But the unfortunate thing is that women are not just viewed as actresses in these ads but as objects for people to look at, use,
abuse, and more. In her fourth installment in a line of documentaries, "Killing Us Softly 4," Jean Kilbourne explains the influence of advertising
women and popular culture, and its relationship to gender violence, sexism and racism, and eating disorders. For women, advertising exemplifies the
ideal female body. According to Kilbourne, young girls are taught from a very early age that they need to spend lots of time and money to achieve this
"physical perfection." But realistically this cannot be achieved. The ideal woman's body is Caucasian, very skinny, big breasts, no flaws, and pretty
much no pores. This cannot be achieved because it is physically impossible to look like this; the illusion comes from the secret world of Photoshop.
No woman is beautiful enough so they leave it to technology to create perfection. The supermodel Cindy Crawford said, "I wish I looked like Cindy
Crawford!" She knew the realities of Photoshop and body image, and more women and girls need to become aware of this as well. Kilbourne uses the

The Emerging Femininity In The 1920s
The Emerging Femininity through Fashion
"The woman who does not require validation from anyone is the most feared individual on the planet" (Mohadesa Najumi). Essentially, femininity is
the art of being a woman. Through fashion in the 1920's, a new kind of femininity blossomed enthralling both men and women. As illustrated during the
Jazz Age, a wave of women rejected the damsel in distress outlook and began channeling their inner Femme Fatale.
The Victorian Era depicted a traditional woman. Women were expected to be beautiful but conservative. A notable fashion piece to mention is the
notorious corset. Krystal D'Souza states that corsets were meant to, "... accentuate a woman's breasts and hips, while cinching the body at the
waist, and dramatically curving the back" (D'Souza). The corset was created to slim the waist and make the hips and bottom larger. This was
meant to create the ideal, "Hour glass shape," women were expected to have. In the Victorian Era, dresses were worn all the time and the skirt
length had to be passed the ankles. Pagoda sleeves were essential to dresses to cover shoulders and high necklines were made to cover the women's

Analysis Of Henry Clay 's ' The Great Compromiser '
Title
Marissa Walker
Mr. Patrick Stoker
HISTORY 1301–140
November 20, 2015 Humans have faults. Politicians are humans therefore they have faults. No matter how people feel about politicians most of them
don't wake up in the morning wanting to ruin the country. Many politicians take advantage of opportunities to make the country better in the way they
see fit. Henry Clay is known for the strides he made to improve the quality of life for the American people. Henry Clay put forth every effort to
become the president of the United States. Clay never became president but he had great influence in government matters. His skill of effectively
charming people and finding balance in negotiations earned him the nickname, "The Great Compromiser" (Clay, 2015). Henry Clay was born and
raised in Virginia. Henry's family was part of the middle–class. Clay was studied law under the guidance of American revolutionist, George Wythe. He
was then admitted to the Virginia bar and moved to Kentucky to practice as a real estate lawyer settling land claims (Bowen, 2014). While in
Kentucky he married into a wealthy family who was popular among the social circles of Kentucky. After making a name for himself in Kentucky as a
well–established lawyer he was elected to be part of the Kentucky legislature in 1803. He served as part of the Kentucky House of Representatives
until 1806. After serving as a representative for the state of Kentucky, Clay was elected to fill a vacant seat in

Contemporary Form Of Materialism In The Women And Mildred...
Two films released amidst the years of the post American Great Depression and World War II, The Women and Mildred Pierce, both similarly explore
the issues surrounding the contemporary form of materialism that has made itself present in society. The economic boom the war provided America
birthed a new form of ultra consumerism that swept the nation, changing everything in a matter of years. These films act as social commentaries in
such a way they are able to highlight the impact materialism has made in all aspects of both the rich and middle class during this span in American
history. George Cukor introduces this as one of his main themes throughout his film The Women. Using it to act as a key motivating factor for his
character Mary Haines, a housewife and mother seemingly trapped in a marriage with a cheating husband due to the luxurious lifestyle it provides. All
the other women in this film find themselves in similar situations yet none speak against what is happening in fear of losing their possessions and
comfortability. Similarly,Michael Curtiz's Mildred Pierce, uses the desire for things such as clothes, houses, and a generally expensive lifestyle as
driving factors for both Mildred Pierce and her Daughter, Veda. Veda Pierce has been raised in a home where she has always received anything she's
wanted. As she grows up we find her desires have amassed to an all time high. So much so when she learns her mother won't be able to give her the

driving factors for both Mildred Pierce and her daughter, Veda. Veda Pierce has been raised in a home where she has always received anything
she's wanted. As she grows up we find her desires have amassed to an all time high. So much so that when she learns her mother won't be able to
give her the opulent life she yearns for, she abandons the family; causing her mother to make conflicting decisions regarding her personal life and
attitude towards materialistic endeavors in hopes of prompting her daughters return. Both of these movies rely heavily on this common theme to
drive the plot as well as build definitive characters. It is important to take into consideration that in this day and age, women found themselves
extensively restricted by societal norms that standardized their lines of work to underpaid jobs. Censuses completed in 1930 and 1940 state that
roughly only 25% of women were employed and only a select handful of those who did held professional jobs ("Baughman et al. Vol. 4"). These
statistics give us a general idea of how unlikely it is for a woman to be able to support herself without a husband. In The Women, these conditions cause
Mary Haines to contemplate her decision to

Groundbreaking Piece In The New York Magazine Of 1915...

  • 1. Groundbreaking Piece in the New York Magazine of 1915... In February 1915, the New York magazine, The Smart Set: A Magazine of Cleverness, featured a piece called, The Flapper. This was the first time a magazine had ever shown the rebellious young girl who wore short dresses and skirts in the 1920's. The magazine described the flapper as "A charming creature!" (The Smart Set : A Magazine of Cleverness) and continued to boast the reputation of theflapper by portraying her as educated and mysterious. The magazine Vanity Fair soon followed in September of 1921, but this magazine demolished the reputation of the flapper girl. "Why aren't they at home?" (Panzini "The Flapper – a New Type: September 1921) the magazine and the majority of people asked. The article then described how the image of the flapper girl is distinguishing a mother from her daughter by the way they acted and dressed. The image of a flapper girl was not just in the United States, for Germany and France had the flapper girl as an icon. The term for flapper girl in Germany is, der Backfish, and in French it is l'IngГ©nue. (The Smart Set : A Magazine of Cleverness) Before the flapper girl, there was the era of Victorian fashion, the role of women before World War One, and the role of women during World War One. Post World War One, the focus on the image of women in society skyrocketed through every day flapper girls and through publicized flapper girls such as famous actresses Clara Bow and Louise Brooks. In the 1920's, opportunities expanded dramatically for women, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Mommie Dearest Joan Crawford, a widely known 1900s American television star was not the totally loving and nurturing mother she was made out to be. During her time, her country looked up to her as a successful actress and affectionate mother of five adopted children. After her death, her oldest daughter, Christina, wrote a revealing memoir called Mommie Dearest, conveying the brutal reality of what is was like to live in the psychotic star's home. In the movie, Joan Crawford possessed various, obvious signs of personality disorders, specifically portrayed by her abusiveness towards Christina. Crawford had several marriages and affairs, all of which were to help her get to "the top" and attain all fame and fortune. In the end, the movie showed her daughter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People who acquire this personality disorder are obsessed with making their life orderly, perfect, and controlled. In the beginning of the movie, Joan Crawford washes herself very thoroughly with soap, scrubbers, hot water, then cold water. She obsessively cleans her home with more help from maids and scolds them if they do not get every space spotless. Later in the movie, she freaks out on her daughter once she discovers she is using wire hangers for her expensive dresses as opposed to the luxurious, padded ones that she prefers. Another personality disorder of Joan Crawford's is histrionic personality disorder. This disorder is described as "a mental condition in which people act in a very emotional and dramatic way that draws attention to themselves." (Berger) Symptoms of this disorder include wanting to be the center of all attention and success, but blaming others for one's own failure or disappointments. Joan Crawford persistently seeks attention from her boyfriends and husbands. She blames her Hollywood downfalls on the scripts, photographers, cameras, and even the mayor. She often gets married for the press so that she can get on television and radios, and she takes her daughter's role in a television show because she is jealous of her growing ... The four candidates in the election were William Crawford, Henry Clay, John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Jackson. They were all from the Jacksonian Republican Party. William H. Crawford was very experienced in politics. Before running for president in 1824, he was James Monroe's secretary of war and he was also secretary of treasury under Monroe and James Madison. He also served in congress as an U.S. Senator from Georgia. He was a minister to France from 1813 thru 1815. Prior to the election of 1824, Crawford had a stroke and was nearly blinded. In 1803, he was elected to the senate. He spent a few years in the senate, and then in 1809, James Madison appointed Adams his minister to St. Petersburg. He helped to bring about the end of The War of 1812 by help negotiate the Treaty of Ghent in 1814. After the war was over he became the minister to London in 1815. The one exception was his brief involvement with the so–called Burr conspiracy. Former Vice President Aaron Burr, determined to restore his personal fortunes, convinced Jackson that he had government backing to lead a filibustering expedition into Mexico. Jackson agreed to build him some boats, but when he realized that Burr and his group were acting entirely on their own, he immediately dropped his connection with the scheme. Jackson's hot temper involved him in a number of feuds and duels. Many of them were caused by remarks made about his marriage. The duel with Charles Dickinson in 1806 stands out as an example of Jackson's characteristic refusal even to acknowledge the possibility of defeat. Jackson let his opponent fire first, because Dickinson was a faster and better shot. • 6. Joan Crawford's Personality Disorders "No wire hangers!" What would be a normal thing to find in an average persons home is not accepted in Joan Crawford's home. This posses the question why in the movie Mommie Dearest does Mrs. Crawford have a dilemma with wire hangers in her closet? Why does she have so many mental complications in general? Although to the public, Joan seems like a striving successful actress she obviously has some underlying issues. She has developed her personality disorders her whole life, but how she got them is a mystery. Most people develop personality disorders from their parents or how they are raised. This is most likely the case with Joan Crawford, but no one really knows since she is diseased. Joan has four major personality disorders within the movie; Obsessive–compulsive, Bipolar, Borderline, and Narcissistic personality disorder. Obsessive–compulsive disorder was the disorder most evident within Joan's personality, throughout, the movie. This disorder demands perfection, and that's in everything. There are often ridiculous rules within the household, and often times the home will be perfectly clean. For example, in the movie Joan blows a gasket on her daughter Christina, because, Joan finds a wire hanger in her closet. This shouldn't be a humongous situation, but it is, and the end result Christina gets beaten with wire hangers. Actress Joan Crawford suffers from many personality disorders. Personality disorders are patterns of inflexible traits that disrupt social life or work and may distress the affected individual (Rathus, 2010). Today I will use the Movie Mommie Dearest and help show specific scenes from the movie that demonstrates these disorders that Joan had. One of the mood disorders that Joan showed was Bipolar Disorder. Bipolar disorder is when your mood changes from depression to really excited or happy very quickly and back to extreme angriness again (Rathus, 2010). She constantly has to have admiration from her fans and signs thousands of pictures of herself to send to her fans. Joan thinks that she is the best actress in the world and no one is better than her. Another symptom of narcissistic behavior is being in love with the way things look not how they feel. When the Crawford family gets interviewed on the radio during Christmas Joan acts like her family is the perfect American family and she always wants her fans to think her children give all their other presents to children in need. But in the essay "The Ugly Truth About Beauty" (1998) Dave Barry argues about how women who spend countless hours on their so called "beauty" whereas men seem not to care. Barry uses juxtaposition and exaggeration to poke fun at men and women behavior and shed light on the harm that the beauty industry is doing. Such as annerexia, depression and other serious health concerns. Not only does Barry uses juxtapositon he also use exaggeration to argue his views. Barry uses exaggeration to add a sesnse of humor to the essay. He exaggerates the Barbie doll proportions giving her a height of seven feet and eighty–one pounds with fifty–three of those pounds being bosoms. He also exaggerates mens complacency with their apperance even "if their faces cause heart failure in cattle at a range of 300 yards, and when their faces sag and their noses bloat to the size of eggplants and their eyebrows grow together to form what appears to be a giant forehead–dwelling tropical caterpillar." With these exaggerations he shows how women are willing to try and be like something that is very hard to achieve, even though they have already achieved their goals in the eyes of men and others. He shows how men are careless about their appearance, even though they may look horrendous; they care more about manly activities. As you can see Barry really used juxtaposition and ... • 10. Fashion in the 1920's Essay Fashion in the 1920's The Roaring Twenties brought many fads and fashion rages. During the 1920's, Americans were given the honor of being called the "best– dressed". Several things contributed to this honor: Affordable pricing, mass production clothing, the birth of the "flapper girl", and rise of fashionable movie stars that Americans wanted to imitate. The style and cut of women's clothing during the 1920's changed drastically. Waistlines dropped dramatically while hemlines rose scandalously. Turned–down hose were no longer black, but beige. Rouged knees, bobbed hair, and figureless figures characterized the "radical flappers". These women violated many of the rules dictating appropriate clothing and behavior for women. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The "flapper girl" trend peaked in 1926, leaving materials such as silk, chiffons, georgettes, crepes, and voiles in high demand. Beads, sequins, and feathers also adorned the fashionable dresses. Coco Chanel, a role model for the flapper, provided many styles, including the popular single strand of pearls. Corsets were no longer popular, but instead the "sexless" figure was favored. Scarfs were often draped over the shoulders if one could not afford a dead fox neck piece. However, the one thing that distinguished the flapper from anyone else was the bobbed haircut. Although, efforts were made to revive long hair, the bob remained stylish. The fashionable flapper remained throughout the 20s, until the craze faded away with the oncoming 30s. The fads and rages of the flappers left an impression on Americans for years to come. These radical women, who were considered immoral and distasteful, remain symbolic of the famous Roaring 20s. The flapper fashion was borrowed by many of the women who lived in the 1920's. • 11. The Impact of Television on American Society Essay The Impact of Television on American Society What role does television play in society? For decades we have seen many parts of our world rapidly going through changes in technology. Today's society has been transformed by means of communication and the available information through mass media. Most Americans rely on television for news, sports, and entertainment. Television is just one of the many examples of how technology has changed our lives. Since the invention of the television in the early 1900's, it has played a very important role in our lives. Having a television set in the home has become very essential in today's society. We depend on it to entertain us with its sitcoms and to inform us about current world issues. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another way television misleads its viewers is by the way that they present candidates for an election of politicians. They spend all their time and money trying to put together a commercial that only puts down the other candidate. How are voters supposed to know whom to vote for if all they are presented with is negative ideas about each candidate? Television also tries to persuade us to vote for a certain proposition. Voters are also lured into voting for or against a proposition by listening to the music being played in the background of the commercial. An example of this type of situation may be the campaign on proposition 5 dealing with the Indian Casinos. They play sad, and convincing, music in the background of their commercial so the viewers can soften their hearts and vote "yes" on their proposition. Television is powerful enough to make our shopping easier. Actually, it is making us lazier. TV stations such as the Home Shopping Network make shopping as easy as dialing some numbers on a touch tone phone. People are also convinced to buy a certain product because a celebrity is presenting it. When prosecuting criminal domestic violence cases too many officers constructed their entire case only on statements made by the victim. However, "victims of domestic violence are more likely than victims of other violent crime to recant or refuse to cooperate in prosecutorial efforts" (Breitenbach, 2008, p. 1256). Officers must consider that victims of domestic violence may refuse to testify because of fear of retaliation, intimidation, financial dependence, emotional attachment, and/or because they reunited with the batterer. Thus, any out of court statements made by witnesses and/or victims to law enforcement must be excluded unless the defendant had prior opportunity to cross–examine the unavailable witnesses (Byrom, 2005). The only non–testimonial statements that would be utilized in court, without direct testimony from the witness and/or complainant, were the taped 911 phone calls reporting the incident. If the victim testified, their previous statements would be allowed as evidence without limitation because the witness was subjected to cross–examination. However, if the victim refused to testify, any testimonials made to law enforcement were not allowed as evidence in the court proceedings. In light of these legal changes, officers needed to construct their domestic violence cases under the assumption that the victim would not be participating in the prosecution. The case commenced at the time the call was received by dispatch up until the case was presented to a judge or jury. Therefore, officers needed to complete the proper procedures to secure recordings of the calls made to the 911 dispatch center to report the domestic situation. In addition to having the subject, victim and/or witnesses complete written and/or video statements, the officer must diligently identify, collect, and photograph evidence at the crime scene (Ellison, 2002). The dresses were not the only reason for this. Another new concept the flappers shocked the world with was short, bobbed hair. Long hair represented elegance and respect, but "flappers had no time for elaborate hairdos" (Fashion . . . through the Ages 1). Many of them would wear their hair in small waves called "marcels," named after the man who invented them, Marcel Greateau. Sometimes they would pin the hair back with another new invention called a bobby pin, which is still in use today. The shorter hair added to the "boyish look" that the flappers wanted. • 28. The Flappers Of The 1920s Flappers What is a flapper? The flapper is one of the most essential parts of the 1920s. They represented a new type of woman. Whether in attitude, attire, or slang. The 1920s flapper demonstrated how women could transform into something that is a part of the modern construction of women's identity. The flapper was a major part of "The Roaring Twenties". The flapper was how young women sought to define themselves. Prior to the 1920s American women were seen in a very traditional light. They were meant to stay in the backgrounds of their husbands. Their dresses were meant to cover all the parts of their bodys. Women were told to follow the traditional and subservient roles. With the ending of World War 1, Europe was in ruins, America became seen as the center of the world's stage. The war caused many American women to take factory jobs as result of the men enlisting in the war effort. They took these jobs because once the husband left there was no source of income coming to the family. So the women had to go to work to receive income to feed their families. Also, they started to work at the factories so they could make guns, bombs, food, and clothes to send to the troops in Europe who were fighting in the war. The 19th Amendment was passed in 1920 by the United States Constitution that allowed women the right to vote. On November 2, 1920 more than 8 million women across the United States voted in elections for the first time. It took ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. The Harms Of Plagiarism In 'Finding Forrester' In the movie "Finding Forrester" , it's main focus was to imply the word "Plagiarism" into the acts of the main character Jamal Wallace. This plays a role later into the movie in which he is assumed to have plagiarized the work of William Forrester a famous writer. Throughout the movie Jamal Wallace developes a friendship with William Forrester that starts to become more than just writing sessions in an apartment. They begin to find a friendship within themselves due to their same abilities as writer, and begin to trust one another in keeping secrets solely just inside Forrester's apartment. Both characters really show the true meaning of what a friendship should be between two people no matter if they have the same interest or are different from one another. Jamal lived up to the belief at that time that African Americans were not intelligent enough and lacked ambition to make something of themselves. He pretends to be much less than he truly is capable of being and doesn't feel like he needs to express how well of a writer he can be. Although he portrays this character of being an average student at his school his test results shows that anyone can be smart and can be there true self once they truly find what they want in there future. The Supreme Court concluded that children's psychological well–being outweighed the accused entitlement to face–to–face confrontation (Parise, 1991, p. 1099). In the past few years several cases have enforced a more comprehensive meaning to the confrontation clause. Such cases are Crawford v. Washington, Melendez–Diaz v. Massachusetts, and Davis v. Washington. In 2004, the landmark case Crawford v. Washington, involved an assault where the defendant Michael Crawford, got into an altercation involving a knife with another male over his wife. During the arrest, the police taped both Michael and his wife statements. The prosecution used his wife's damaging statement, as she was unwilling to testify against her husband, during his trial and Crawford was convicted (Friedman, p. 440). Subsequently, the case made it to the United States Supreme Court and they overturned the 1980 decision in Ohio v. Roberts. • 37. Analysis Of `` Killing Us Softly 4 `` By Jean Kilbourne Whether we realize it or not, we are constantly surrounded by advertisements. On average, we are exposed to approximately 3,000 ads per day, through logos, billboards, and television commercials, even our choices of brands. But in today's society, one of the most used and influential tools of advertising are women. But the unfortunate thing is that women are not just viewed as actresses in these ads but as objects for people to look at, use, abuse, and more. In her fourth installment in a line of documentaries, "Killing Us Softly 4," Jean Kilbourne explains the influence of advertising women and popular culture, and its relationship to gender violence, sexism and racism, and eating disorders. For women, advertising exemplifies the ideal female body. According to Kilbourne, young girls are taught from a very early age that they need to spend lots of time and money to achieve this "physical perfection." But realistically this cannot be achieved. The ideal woman's body is Caucasian, very skinny, big breasts, no flaws, and pretty much no pores. This cannot be achieved because it is physically impossible to look like this; the illusion comes from the secret world of Photoshop. No woman is beautiful enough so they leave it to technology to create perfection. The supermodel Cindy Crawford said, "I wish I looked like Cindy Crawford!" She knew the realities of Photoshop and body image, and more women and girls need to become aware of this as well. Kilbourne uses the example of Ana ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Emerging Femininity In The 1920s The Emerging Femininity through Fashion "The woman who does not require validation from anyone is the most feared individual on the planet" (Mohadesa Najumi). Essentially, femininity is the art of being a woman. Through fashion in the 1920's, a new kind of femininity blossomed enthralling both men and women. As illustrated during the Jazz Age, a wave of women rejected the damsel in distress outlook and began channeling their inner Femme Fatale. The Victorian Era depicted a traditional woman. Women were expected to be beautiful but conservative. A notable fashion piece to mention is the notorious corset. Krystal D'Souza states that corsets were meant to, "... accentuate a woman's breasts and hips, while cinching the body at the waist, and dramatically curving the back" (D'Souza). The corset was created to slim the waist and make the hips and bottom larger. This was meant to create the ideal, "Hour glass shape," women were expected to have. In the Victorian Era, dresses were worn all the time and the skirt length had to be passed the ankles. Pagoda sleeves were essential to dresses to cover shoulders and high necklines were made to cover the women's neck and dГ©colletage. If the skirts were not touching the floor, skirts were closely worn over the hip and flared out just above the knee. (Joshi). The Victorian Age signifies a time period where women had to follow stringent dress codes. The thought of showing any feminine flesh was un–lady like and unrespectable. (Alchin "Women ... So much so that when she learns her mother won't be able to give her the opulent life she yearns for, she abandons the family; causing her mother to make conflicting decisions regarding her personal life and attitude towards materialistic endeavors in hopes of prompting her daughters return.
