- Welcome, everyone, to “Getting Started in Second Life” How Four Nonprofits are Using Virtual Worlds to Create Communities of Virtue. I’m Jennifer Ragan-Fore. I’m the general membership director for ISTE, an educational technology membership association. I introduced our Second Life community in late 2006, and continue to develop and manage it. We have a truly excellent panel assembled for our session—my colleagues on the panel are some of the most experienced and influential nonprofit leaders using Second Life today. Starting at the end, on my far right, is Susan Tenby. As TechSoup's Community Manager, Susan launched and is responsible for promotion and management of community forums that draw 125,000 unique monthly visitors. She is also the force behind the Nonprofit Commons in Second Life, a community of 400+ nonprofit workers. Susan, would you like to say a few works about your project? Next to me is Josh Knauer, the CEO of Rhiza Labs, a company that creates software that helps non-profits and government agencies share information and understand community needs and assets. He is also the founder of Commonwealth Islands, a community of nonprofit organizations working in Second Life. Josh, would you say a few words about your Second Life Project? Last but not least, on my left is Meghan Deana, an associate with Global Kids, a nonprofit focused on transforming urban youth into successful students and global and community leaders. Working in Global Kids’ Online Leadership Program, Meghan is responsible for several key Second Life projects. Another interesting thing to note is that before joining Global Kids, Meghan worked as a liaison for Linden Labs, the company who creates Second Life.
