The Pros And Cons Of A Designer Baby
A designer baby is a baby that has been genetically engineered for selected traits by scientists and
parents. These traits can vary from gender selection to lowered disease–risk and much more. In the
future, there will most likely be even more options to choose from. This process is done through in
vitro fertilization (IVF) and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). IVF is when an egg is
fertilization outside the body, usually in a test tube. The egg and sperm sample is usually extracted
and then the two are combined in a laboratory dish. Then, the embryo is moved to the mother's
womb. The purpose of a designer baby is for the parents to be able to artificially select the baby's
genetic makeup, usually to produce desirable traits such as appearance, personality, and intelligence,
can also be modified. This will provide the child with many advantages in life if it is given more
genes that can increase athleticism, intelligence, artistic ability and plenty more according to the

Although it can increase lifespan, provide a better understanding of genetics, and give a child genes
that the parents do not carry, there are many bad side effects. First of all, with designer babies, there
will be termination of extra embryos. This is unethical because it requires the killing of several
humans since life begins at conception. An affect society would face would be a greater divide
between the economically disadvantaged, and the wealthy. Only the upper classes would be able to
afford a designer baby. Consequently, the designer babies would have an unfair advantage in life

Science is an advanced subject that has developed tremendously throughout the years. It has let us
do things that no one would've thought was possible in the past. One of those things include being
able to "design" our children. So what exactly do you mean by "design"? It means that you can

For instance, if you design your child to have a more than average level of intelligence but instead
of your child using their potential to be as smart as they can, they choose to not care, not want to
learn, and not want to be as smart as they are capable of being. Now what are you going to do when
your child does not meet your expectations?
Lastly, Unless you have a few thousand dollars laying around, chances are you probably don't want
to invest your money on a designer baby. To want to have a designer baby it means to spend close to
$9000 on an In vitro fertilization with $3,000 to $5,000 of add–ons for medication, close to $4000
for a pre–implantation genetic diagnosis and $18,000 for a gender selection. Sometimes even simple
genetic tests can cost over $200. That much money is way over the budget for most people.
To summarize, I do not have a positive view on designer babies. It is violating the baby's rights, the
parents would have some sort of expectations for the child that the child may or may not be able to
meet and designer babies are not affordable for the average family. The research for designer babies
is not a 100% completed yet. We can not predict if they will be a pro or a con for the future. Only

Technology is quickly advancing, and many opportunities only dreamt about previously have
developed. One of these opportunities arising is designing your baby. Currently, scientist can

certain genes which cause traits like intelligence and musical ability (Bostrom 19). The doctor
screens multiple embryos to see what traits the it carries, and the parents can choose which embryo
they desire (Ethical questions over designer babies). Another way to create a designer baby is to use
a donor gamete. This allows parents to match a donor gamete with desired traits to one of their own
and then implant that embryo through in vitro fertilisation (Bostrom 19). Currently, it is not possible
for doctors to screen for intelligence and musical ability, but it is possible to screen for gender, eye
