Scientists aim to gain knowledge and improve the power output, the time duration, and the energy
cost.
Nuclear fusion is a process that occurs when two hydrogen isotopes (tritium and deuterium) fuse
together. This reaction produces a neutron and also a large amount of energy. However, a massive
amount of heat is necessary for the reaction to initiate because the nuclei (which have very strong
opposing charges) must fuse together. The temperature necessary for this to occur is over one
hundred million degrees Kelvin. When the reaction occurs, the energy is so great that it is very
difficult to contain. So far the known methods of containment are magnetic confinement and inertial
confinement. The magnetic confinement uses a very powerful magnetic field, and the inertial
confinement uses the inertia of the reaction.

or reflects if fusion is feasible. We believe fusion would be a feasible source of power if it could
produce reasonably more energy that is put in.

There are several methods to create nuclear fusion for power. The most successful is the star, which

Teller was born in Budapest in 1908, and was educated in Germany at the Institute of Technology in

agriculture, municipalities, oil, and gas fields. My family and I have lived on the Cimarron River for
the past 20 years. My parents drilled their own house well in 1992. Today, the water level in our
house well is marginal, and will only last ten more years before we have to drill deeper. As our water
is non–renewable, we may not find anything when we do drill deeper. It would be devastating to
think my family would have to move from Southwest, Kansas. In the near future, we may find that
water is priced as high as gasoline or even gold. Without water we will not have people around to
plant and harvest crops much less water those plants. It is a vicious cycle and drastic changes need

A final, more personal note as to why I so desire to attend Berkeley over a few of my other
possibilities: in the middle of November, in the midst of completing the bulk of my college
applications, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Combined with applying to college,
completing homework, staying on top of classes, and keeping my commitments to extra–curricular
activities, the knowledge that my mom has a serious form of cancer made those few months all the
more stress–filled and difficult. Thank the Lord, my mom has successfully completed radiation and
continues to see specialists regularly, solidifying her status in my mind as the strongest person I
know. Going off to college, I am going to miss my mom dearly, and she will dearly miss me. I've
always been very close with her, and I recognize the ambivalence within her of wanting me to stay
close to home in the Bay Area while wanting what's best for me. I feel similar sentiments, having
the strong urge to protect and care for my mom, visiting on a regular basis, while desiring to grow as

element number 114 on the periodic table. It was given the official name of flerovium by the IUPAC

livermorium by the IUPAC in 2012. There are two other elements that have been discovered, but not

The creation of the element was the work of the two science teams at the Joint Institute for Nuclear
Research in Dubna and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. The creation of
the element was made possible through the fusion of elements 20 and 96. To be precise, calcium–48
was fused with curium–248. When calcium atoms were fired at the curium target, the atom
livermorium–292 was formed. It lasted for about 50 ms before it underwent alpha decay. In a year's
worth of experimentation, two atoms of livermorium–292 had been created. One lasted for around

"Heavy rain over the last few days caused the water level in the river to rise which made it drag
