approximately 87 days. This became the largest and most devastating oil spill in the United States.
The coastlines of Texas, Alabama, Florida, MIssissippi and Louisiana were drastically effected by
this horrible oil spill. In the end the BP oil spill negativity impacted more than 16,000 miles of
coastline. Even today, oil is appearing on shores, and created horrible damage to living organisms in

Located in Southern Iraq, 20 miles from the Kuwaiti border, is the Rumaila oil field (Fig. 1). It is
one the biggest oil fields in the world and the biggest in Iraq. Discovered in 1953 by the Basrah
Petroleum Company (BPC) at 2.4 km below the surface, an associate company of the Iraq
Petroleum Company, this super–giant oil field's first estimated volume was thought to be 30 billion
barrels in oil reserves (Bb) (Vassiliou 2009); it is now estimated to be 17 Bb (Hydrocarbons
Technology n.d.). Since 1961, it has been under control of the Iraqi Government and has been
heavily developed (Shwadran 1977). The field makes up around 40% of Iraq's oil production with
around 200 land wells operating. On November 3rd, 2009, British Petroleum (BP) along with the
China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) bid on the field and signed a joint contract acquiring
a share of acreage and production with Iraq's state–owned South Oil Company (SOL), the company
that had run the oil field since its inception with the state. In the contract BP received 38% of
production share, its partner CNPC gaining 37%, and 25% for the Iraqi government's State Oil
Marketing Organization (SOMO) (BP 2014). BP and CNPC aimed to increase production from 1.1
million barrels a day to 2.85 by 2016. By October 2012, the field was producing around 1.33 million

On 16 October 2007 Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation officials reported a toxic
spill of methanol (methyl alcohol) at the Prudhoe Bay oil field managed by BP PLC. Nearly 2,000
gallons of mostly methanol, mixed with some crude oil and water, spilled onto a frozen tundra pond

crude that is higher value and can be further refined at more facilities worldwide. In addition, it can
be transported and stored using 'conventional' crude infrastructure already in place and leverage that

It is critically important that all of us are in agreement why we are meeting and the expected

personnel may include representation from the director of field operations, land based facility safety,
off shore facility safety, finance, public relations, marketing, legal operations, audit department,

British Petroleum as a company was founded in 1954, however its roots go back another half
century. British geologists discovered oil underneath Iran in 1908 and by 1909 the Anglo–Persian
Oil Company (APOC) began drilling for the British government. APOC benefited from World War I
as it was predicted all British naval ships will soon be converted from coal to oil and the company
could spread further into Europe. Refineries were built in Whales, Scotland and were bought in
France and Australia. In 1935, APOC was officially changed to Anglo–Iranian Oil Company
(AIOC) due to Persia being referred to as Iran.
World War II gave rise to nationalism inside the Arab countries including Iran. The Iranian
government in 1951 obtained control of the Iranian oil industry forming the National Iranian Oil
Company and consequently pushing out the AIOC. The American and British governments worked
to over throw the Iranian government in 1953 to regain control of oil in Iran. AIOC became the
British Petroleum Company (BP) in 1954 after a holding company Iranian Oil Participants (IOP)

In 1914, the British government became the company's principle stockholder. While the company
was originally registered as the Anglo–Persian Oil Company, Ltd; in response to the Persian
government voting to change its name to Iran in 1935, the company was renamed the Anglo–Iranian
Oil Company, Ltd. Unfortunately, over the next couple Decades, sentiment in Iran began to turn
against the company. The Iranian government began to believe that they were being taken advantage
of, and that the British company was reaping profits at the expense of the Iranian people. In 1951,
due in part to these beliefs, the country elected Mohammed Mossedegh as Prime Minister, who
pushed to nationalize the holdings of the Anglo–Iranian Oil Company. Later that year, Iran voted on
a bill nationalizing the oil company so that oil profits would then benefit Iran. The result was an
international boycott of Iran. Nationalization was not accepted by the British government and their
strategy consisted of "no mediation, no compromise, no acceptance of nationalization of any form."

While it is true that British petroleum does pay for and take full responsibility for each of their

It is critically important that all of us are in agreement why we are meeting and the expected
outcomes. Finally, as part of the agenda review, we will review a proposed list of attendees. These
personnel may include representation from the director of field operations, land based facility safety,
off shore facility safety, finance, public relations, marketing, legal operations, audit department,
human resources and finally key members of the project team. The workshop will be two days in
duration at an offsite conference center so the group can focus on the development of the risks that
are relevant to this project and its deliverables. The agenda, beginning with day one will include
introduction of all members to include the facilitator of our meeting. We will use a facilitator who is
not a stakeholder so all participants are on a level playing ground with each other. Next we will
confirm the objective of the project which is to draft an action plan to restore the reputation of BP

British Petroleum is one of the biggest oil and gas organizations around the world. British Petroleum
had the rights to investigate the Macondo all around, situated in the Gulf of Mexico in 2009. Events
like Deep Water Horizon explosion has also been taken place under the supervision of the British
Petroleum company. Because of the absence of regulations, both inward and outward, and in
additionally due to the reduction in the health and safety budget decision by the higher management,
the incident of the Deep Water Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico region has happened. Despite the fact
that the oil kit was rented by British Petroleum, an organization named Transocean claimed and
worked the Deep Water Horizon. Their activities, deliberate or not, changed the lives of numerous

Why Did The British Petroleum Oil Spill
April 20, 2010 has gone down in the history books as the day that the most horrific oil spill in
history happened. British Petroleum's leased offshore drilling rig exploded on this day. The
Deepwater Horizon caused the largest accidental marine oil spill ever (Crandall, Parnell and Spillan,
2013). The ruptured oil well leaked nearly 5 million barrels of oil into the sea over a three month
period of time. The devastation killed eleven men. 17 others were severely injured. The devastation
reached marine wildlife and some 5 years later, that group is still feeling the after affects.
This tragedy was bound to happen at some point because all of the key indicators were in place. In
