My Community Service
Going to many different private schools during my elementary and middle school years, I had the opportunity to do many special things in my
community most students did not have access to. Though all of the schools were very different, they all had the common value of service before self
and gave their students numerous ways to help the school and community. From visiting nursing homes, to playing with the band at school
fundraisers, to being paired up as mentors with younger students, I always had my hands busy providing someone in need. One of the biggest parts of
my community service was visits to those in assisted living. Those visits taught me an immense amount about the importance of reaching out,
especially to those who have been isolated from the outside world. Just the act of visiting and singing Christmas carols, or simply talking to them
brought so much joy to the entire facility and improved the residents' days. Though I may not have had the most polished singing voice, the happiness
our miniature concerts brought far surpassed the embarrassment I felt scratching out the notes. On one occasion, our little group managed to get an
entire facility participating in an exciting rendition of "She'll be Comin' 'Round the Mountain," staff and residents alike were overjoyed to be

decreasing its crime rate, particularly during the 1990s. While some coalitions have attributed this positive development to changes in

The problem with this model is that it is difficult for police departments to dedicate officer to public relations while there are serious crimes that need
to be prevented. The idea of the public reporting crimes to the police in a community meeting is acceptable but in many cases especially with the
current economic crisis that we are facing, it is impossible for police departments to have officers strictly assigned to community police. As discussed

The Windshield Survey gathered information to better see the bigger picture of the community. There are many older detached single family
homes with front and back yards. There is also a mix of old apartments, as well as brand new apartments. There are lots of open spaces due to the
number of cemeteries in Colma. Some have lush green fields with trees and planted flowers, while one has a lake with ducks. Most common place

Many times it is the responsibility of the community to speak out about problems. Communities are "the only effective power that can limit

I recently had the privilege of spending a week with a community called Furaha Community Center that provides education, social services, and
community action efforts within a slum community called Haruma located in Nairobi, Kenya. The community of Haruma has roughly 500,000 people
living in the equivalent of 12 square blocks. The community suffers from poor sanitation, rampant disease, and violence. Furaha Community Center
serves the poorest and the sickest of the community in efforts to provide food, education, micro loans, and social services. The community is defined
by some outsiders as poor, sick, dirty, lazy, disease ridden, gang infested, violent, sexually deviant, uneducated (education is not free in Kenya so many

Throughout the Edgewater and Rogers Park community, my focus was on the physical health and well being of the members of the community. The
assets identified were doctor's offices, small clinics and clinics that are a part of a larger chain. Each of these assets show the diversity in the medical
care offered in the Edgewater and Rogers Park community. For example, the assets that we found were mostly privately owned and the clinics that
are part of a larger chain such as the clinics in Walgreens or CVS, were small and run by only a few people. There weren't any assets that were part of
a large medical institution such as Advocate or Nova health. There was only one hospital which is Methodist Hospital which is one of the largest
assets we found. This illustrates how in the Edgewater and Rogers Park community, smaller and more convenient methods of receiving healthcare is
emphasized more than larger scale hospitals. The asset that I researched and interviewed was Physicians Immediate Care on 6140 North Broadway in
Edgewater Chicago. This is a small clinic which is actually part of a larger chain of clinics that are located in Nebraska, Indiana, and Illinois. This
particular clinic was run by the Physician Assistant. I learned through the interview that the Physician Assistant can perform many of the tasks that a
Doctor could, however, they must practice under a Doctor's license. The Physician Assistant I interviewed said that a Doctor will periodically come
during the week

Community is like an extended family. We support each other in so many ways, whether it's volunteering at a fundraiser, offering advice or even just
a smile and kind words. I live in a small town which means a lot of things, but most importantly that I grew up with a strong sense of community. I'll

Small Town Communities The neighborhood I live in is called Sugar Mill Pond; it's surrounded by fields and has a huge pond in the middle of it; it's
located in South Louisiana in Youngsville in between two cities New Iberia and Lafayette. The town Youngsville and Sugar Mill Pond has become

Giving Back I believe that giving back to the community is important because they have helped us out and I believe that we should do the same in
return. We've grown up in small place from small island, small town, and a small school.Without the support from others that we have now we

The transformation from high school to college was very big for me. Only because I was a loner and I didn't really get involved with groups nor
did I have a social life outside of playing basketball. When I came to college I made up in my mind that I was going to change. Once I was
introduced to the four pathways that Methodist offered I decide to choose community engagement. Community engagement fits me best because it

These were beneficial to not just the community, but to anyone who was set to receive blood transfusions for medical reasons. As a Boy Scout, we
also aided other organizations, such as the Lisbon Historical Society. Furthermore, my troop assisted in running events, such as my town's fall
