Community Reflection
It would be an understatement to say that I have been blessed to grow up in a neighborhood where I
knew nothing bad would happen to me. It would be an understatement to say that I can go to bed
knowing all the doors in the house are locked and my house is secure. It would be not be false to say
that these things are given to me each day, but it would be an understatement to say I am thankful
for each thing. An error is falling down your stairs because you did not turn a light on, but a mistake
would be taking any of this security for granted. I know these things not because of what I have
achieved in my life, but a result of my fathers job. He stands as the fire captain in Davenport, Iowa.
Listening to some of the horror stories from his job, has widened my perspective on not only life,
but in the small minor details surrounding everything. I can say I am more grateful for being able to
have the understanding of safety, that if ever in a bad situation, I would step in to take risks and
protect those around me. In today's society, crime is such a common thing and often occurs within
small communities. I remember reading and learning about history and how communities would
always be there to help one another. But today, community is such an overused word, and does not
describe what one is at all. The foundation of a community revolves around the people who risk
their lives day in and day out, to be there to protect us and get us out of harm's way.

Arcata Community Forestry
Managing a forest with and for the people: Community forestry and environmental public
participation in the case of Arcata, California
1. Introduction
All across the United States, historical patterns of resource extraction have led to degradation and
fragmentation of forest landscapes. When a community depends on those resources, a local crisis
can emerge from this process of degradation. To reverse this scenario, community forestry became a
popular approach in the 1970s as a modern policy and practice (Baker and Kusel, 2003). This model
was based on a simple assumption: as local people already use and rely on the natural resources of
their forests, they are in the best position to conserve them. However, recent literature has show that

1955, being the first municipally–owned forest in California, with the purpose of being managed to

Community Collaboration Paper
Community collaboration and leadership, with emphasis upon entrepreneurial leadership, and the
role of sustained dialog in the application of economic development and growth in rural regions, are
the subjects of this essay. Multi–community collaboration is a broader, more horizontal interaction
of people to meet their common needs. This process is a popular strategy for rural development
(Wilkinson, 1992). It is an emergent process that does not just occur, but evolves through a complex
and dynamic integration of ecological, social and psychological factors (Wilkinson, 1992). Because
rural townships and settlements are generally isolated, and tend to lack individually, in ecological,
community field and other vital resources to achieve ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though a private, therefore, closely held initiative, a project of the scope planned could have never
gotten off the drawing board without the input, support and guidance of local leaders. Thousands of
hours of discussion, planning and work have gone into this master plan development. Though self–
interested, ethical, transformational, global leadership can present new and innovative ways to bring
growth and development to a region, with, or without federal or state government as its principal
benefactor as Bridger asserts. In regions that have had no appreciable growth or development in
over 65 years, leadership, the creation and funding of thousands of high quality jobs, is
transformational. In majority poor, black, underserved communities in the US, waiting on the
federal or state government to change ones condition, is no longer an option. Instead, Korshing's
assertion of adaption is the key. Notwithstanding, the approval of the local elite, leaders converged
and have succeeded in acquiring funding to transform a region, a Bridger assertion, proven
incorrect. Innovative planning, sustained dialog with local leaders and entrepreneurial leadership
will soon yield over 100 thousand jobs, impact 3 Southern states, directly impact over 15 counties
and bring an infusion of billions of global dollars, into a region in desperate need of

A Small Community : My Community In A Small Town Community
Small Town Communities The neighborhood I live in is called Sugar Mill Pond; it's surrounded by
fields and has a huge pond in the middle of it; it's located in South Louisiana in Youngsville in
between two cities New Iberia and Lafayette. The town Youngsville and Sugar Mill Pond has
become one of the happiest places to live and work; both have become both my community because
of how small the town is so everyone knows everybody. It accommodates residents; it is surrounded
by multiple schools, retail shops, and businesses. Its location offers large amount of entertainment,
and a sense of caring in the air. My community comes together for any aspect that is needed, big or
small problems.
I would describe my neighborhood and town's atmosphere as a warm, bright aesthetically pleasing
place. I walk around the neighborhood and I see blue houses, white houses and, yellow houses; I
find the feeling as a beach atmosphere because, of the way the houses look and they all have open
windows that people have a beautiful view of the pond. As people walk around the pond in my
neighborhood people can easily talk to anyone and have a nice chat. I see kids playing with other
kids going back and forth to each other's houses; I see the parents interacting with the other kid's
parents forming that similarity or bond of the same dynamitic in the kids. This forms a community
for the kids and as well as the parents. Our streets in the neighborhood aren't like any others; we
hear laughter of kids

Udean Community : The Utopian Sense Of Community
The Utopian Sense of Community It is interesting the idea of a community, what is it stand for in the
general perspective? Does it mean a nation state, a specific group, or just a neighborhood for that
instance? There are many metrics make up a perfect community, from a utilitarian perspective to a
unique personality one community has to offer. Above it all, in my opinion, the metric that has an
outsized impact would have to be the priority of its people's welfare. The term "ideal community"
tends to us to think of the unattainable idea of a utopian society. First, let us break down the term
"community", the Oxford Dictionary defines the term, "a group of people living in the same place or
having a particular characteristic in common" or "a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of
sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals". Second of all, the term "ideal" means succeeding
one's concept of what is perfect or suitable. Since the ideal is often regarded individually, I would
like to start talking about the community as a group of people that share the same characteristic,
such as attending the same institution. Many people would think an ideal community involves with
an inviting environment, where people can enjoy their days together by a strong sense of leisure,
besides working, because (let's face it) recreational hobby is a powerful factor that makes us all have
a happy life. For example, when I go to school, I think being able to work hard with

The Importance Of Community Service For Your Community And...
Have you ever thought about what community service would do for your community or the
community of others? Or at least thought of the impact that it could have on not only you , but
others as well? Community Service or volunteering has a certain importance to it. Community
service is helpful when trying to build or better a community for not only those in the community
but you as well. By volunteering people gain compassion and understanding of the world around
them. When people volunteer, they usually volunteer in a project that they're really passionate about,
which gives them the opportunity to volunteer with as much time that is available. Community
service is way to bring a nation together. It is like the key point of a country, as there is a great
amount of importance of doing good for others. Community service is a handy service because it is
the best way to create a sense of responsibility to people. With so many things going wrong in the
world today, normal everyday people have the opportunity to fulfill a sense of purpose and they
have the chance to make their "world" a better place.
Community service is not only fun and rewarding experience, it also looks good really good on a
resume. By people stepping up to volunteer, it gives them a great sense of newfound purpose as
well. By giving back through community service this brings not only joy to those who are being
helped but a sense of pride and accomplishment for the person who is participating in community

Community Analysis
Community is like an extended family. We support each other in so many ways, whether it's
volunteering at a fundraiser, offering advice or even just a smile and kind words. I live in a small
town which means a lot of things, but most importantly that I grew up with a strong sense of
community. I'll be graduating with a class of about eighty of my peers this year and I've gone to
school with about half of these students since Kindergarten. This gave me the opportunity to grow
strong bonds with those around me. These experiences will help me to enrich the sense of
community that UW– has worked so hard to create. Helping each other learn and grow has and
always will be important to me.

Getting good grades has always been important to me, no matter what. During the first two years of
high school I struggled with my science classes. Although I was putting in the time and effort, some
of the concepts were difficult for me to understand and apply. Despite this setback, I have stayed on
the honor roll since 6th grade. However, just being on the honor roll wasn't my end goal. I was
determined to go above and beyond and not settle for anything other than my very best. For me it's
not just about finishing something, but doing it to the best of my abilities.
As a freshman I joined Future Farmers of America. I have enjoyed the opportunities it has afforded
me. Some of these include National Convention, judging contests, community events, and being an
officer. It has been so rewarding to give back to my community and to meet people from all around
the nation who share similar values. Being in FFA has shown me that when each person contributes
it leads to something greater. It has also helped me to find my voice and speak up for what I believe

Community Scholarship Essay
Growing up in such a small town, community was something deeply ingrained into my life from a
very young age. Community was something cultivated through one's obligations to help fellow
citizens, the overall ideology of benefits reaped through community service, and the beauty and
heart of a tight–knit community. In my small Texas town, community was the lifeblood coursing
through the veins of winding asphalt backroads, surrounded by agriculture.
In my hometown, hospitality and helping others went hand in helping hand. Almost every weekend,
a group of people host benefit plate sales, or raffles, as means of benefitting and serving another
community member. These acts of kindness ranged from assisting a suffering member of the
community, a community team yearning to travel and compete for the town's name, or to help cover
medical expenses for the ill and seriously injured. When these events happen, majority of the
community feels a subconscious obligation to, in some way, contribute to the improvement of the
cause behind the plate or raffle. For example, my family and others, do not always have time
permitted to actively serve at these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though I do plan on graduating and moving to Austin, Texas, I still do love how helpful having a
small community can be. In my experiences with community, I have felt nothing but support. When
a close friend of mine was lost in an accident, members of my community immediately stepped in to
help both his family, and the grieving students. This help came in the form of counselors ready to
listen to every falling tear, fellow citizens reaching out to care for the mourning family, and peers
comforting each other regardless of who you were. Any time there was an issue in Carrizo Springs,
there was always a multitude of neighbors and friends ready with both sweet food and sweet

I have made a difference in my community by volunteering for many organizations. To start, I have
participated in the Lisbon Community Band and provided musical entertainment for the community
to enjoy free of charge. Each year, my town band has a winter and summer concert. These concerts
include a new set of songs for the community to hear. Music relaxes the mind and is believed to
have certain healing properties. I have been in my town's community band for eight years now and I
plan to be a member for as long as I can. The community band is a valuable and necessary aspect of
my community. I also have participated in my town's Boy Scout Troop in the past, helping out

festival. My community extends to other parts of the state, as I have volunteered for organizations in
nearby towns. One such organization that I volunteer at is the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in
New London. I volunteer in the summers in the Lawrence and Memorial Lobby shop gift shop. I
feel I am able to make a difference in the life of those who come into the gift shop. Specifically, I
attempt to bring smiles to the faces of the customers and make their experience in the gift shop
enjoyable. Another organization I volunteer for is the Slater Library in Jewett City. One summer I
developed a reading and science experiment program that lasted for many weeks and motivated
children to read, as well as become interested in the sciences. Through the creation of this program,
I have observed children having a great time performing these science experiments while being
motivated to read challenging books. Overall, I believe I have made a significant impact on my

Essay on The Importance of Community
Community is very important and has many factors like kinship, unity, and identity. Community
helps society because it creates solutions, provides security and reveals dedication. It discovers
truthfulness. Communities are part of everyday life and have positive affects on its members.
Communities can be found everywhere and can be created anywhere. You may be unaware of it, but
you are part of a community not only based on your location, but also based on your lifestyle, your
religion, your heritage, your education, or your abilities. As Hewitt once said, "Community provides
a psychological world and a place of identification for its members." Identifying yourself with a
particular community may be easier than it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Observing others' behaviors lets one realize and understand more about different types and kinds of
people. Seeing how certain groups or communities act or react to situations lets us see more
perspective and hopefully appreciate their point of view. It is important to be part of communities
for much of the same reason. When you are part of a group, you understand and compromise with
the other members of the group. Discussing issues involving the community helps to lead to
solutions. Talking things through with other members improves social skills as well as relationships.
Knowing how people feel about certain issues let you know more about that person, and in turn, you
learn more about yourself. Hearing what other people have to say may sway your own opinions
about something. For example, maybe you are part of a church you thought you really believed in,
but hearing the discussions at the church meetings you start to think that you do not belong in this
community. Though that specific church may be the right place for many, you learn that you need a
new church community. Churches are communities because the members are unified in their
common beliefs. These communities are like families because the members support and help each
other religiously and they feel secure. Being a sound part of a community, you should continuously
learn more and more about yourself. As a member of a club, taking part in meetings and activities let
you learn

Community Reflection Paper
I recently had the privilege of spending a week with a community called Furaha Community Center
that provides education, social services, and community action efforts within a slum community
called Haruma located in Nairobi, Kenya. The community of Haruma has roughly 500,000 people
living in the equivalent of 12 square blocks. The community suffers from poor sanitation, rampant
disease, and violence. Furaha Community Center serves the poorest and the sickest of the
community in efforts to provide food, education, micro loans, and social services. The community is
defined by some outsiders as poor, sick, dirty, lazy, disease ridden, gang infested, violent, sexually
deviant, uneducated (education is not free in Kenya so many families cannot afford to send their
children to school) and beyond hope. Although some of these descriptors are partially true, I found
the community to be generous, supportive, hard–working, resilient, and joyful. To live in Haruma
and be a member of the community you have a difficult life. Tribal hierarchy defines your ability to
obtain opportunities to better yourself. Religion is a source of comfort, but is also used by some
religious leaders as a way gain power and influence over the desperate. Most people work as "day
laborers" and live day to day. They often do not eat every day because they cannot find work. Fires,
building collapses, gang activity, and violence are a part of everyday life. Diseases spread rapidly

Define Community Analysis
Community, what is community? How would you define it? Community can be defined as a
geographic location in a way that a group of individuals live in the same area like a neighborhood, a
city, a district, a town, or a country. In simplest terms, it is where you live. However, individuals can
also feel a sense of community through the place where they grew up or where they often go and
visit. It can also be a group of individuals who have certain characteristics in common such as
religion, race or ethnicity, culture, beliefs, professional and economic ties, interests, and more.
Individuals refer themselves to particular attributes or affinities (what individuals like to do). For
example, individuals say I belong to an Asian community or I belong to an art community. As such,
community bestows one a sense of identity (who people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though individuals are different and unique from each other, they all come to one because of
that one particular shared interest.
For me, community is bigger than that. I believe that community is diversity, kinship, unity, identity,
cooperation, passion, similarity, strength, motivation, and guidance. The word community does not
only limit itself to a group of individuals who have shared characteristics, interests, and experiences,
but it also goes beyond the idea of a group of diverse individuals coming together. These are
individuals who have different ethnicities, race, religion, culture, traditions, and so forth. Within a
community is where one develops relationships with other people over time by means of interacting
and communicating regularly, whether it would be in person or online. Thus, a better understanding
of the surroundings and in greater span, the world, is formed. Community is where it starts.
Differences are set aside. It is a place where everyone works together to make their community a
better place or a harmonious place to dwell. Everyone contributes whatever

Discourse Community In America
A discourse community is a group of individual who all have the same shared ideals, beliefs, values,
and rules––all communicated with using the discourse community's own established language. For
example, a grouping of innovative scientists are describing new ways of curing diseases, using their
own terminologies some people may find confusing because they are possibly not a part of that
community overall. A foreigner traveling to America may find the culture to be puzzling and
conflicting with how people abbreviate their words, and enforce their beliefs unto others. That
foreigner will more than likely feel outcasted for being unaware of how Americans run their own
culture. When somebody visits southern parts of the United States, such as ... Show more content on

difference in comparing and contrasting two incredibly diverse continents. The bottom line is that
people will only learn of the interested discourse community if they inquire what generals they

Community Oriented Policing
Community Oriented Policing
In spite of the fact that the United States still exceeds many other industrialized nations in overall
crime and violent crime, it has been effective in decreasing its crime rate, particularly during the
1990s. While some coalitions have attributed this positive development to changes in socio–
demographic trends and rigid enforcement approaches, one coalition highlights the success of the
community–oriented policing and problem–oriented policing in eradicating the root causes of crime
(Stephens, 2003). While I don't believe that community oriented policing in the sole cause of
decreased crime rates I do believe that it has its positive and negative sides.
Community oriented policing is based on the complete ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The problem with this model is that it is difficult for police departments to dedicate officer to public
relations while there are serious crimes that need to be prevented. The idea of the public reporting
crimes to the police in a community meeting is acceptable but in many cases especially with the
current economic crisis that we are facing, it is impossible for police departments to have officers
strictly assigned to community police. As discussed earlier without full cooperation from both sides
the practice of community police is ineffective.
The community policing plan created by the City of Aberdeen in Maryland provides a good example
of how the partnership between the police and members of the community can be effective for
dealing with crimes. In order to promote the police and community's adoption of these new roles,
the Mid–Atlantic Regional Community Policing Institute (MARCPI), along with the Johns Hopkins
University, will offer training to the police and the community. Both the police and the community
have to learn how to change their thinking processes in order to deal with the problems in a
proactive way, instead of the conventional reactive fashion. Through the training sessions, the
members of the community, the police officers and city department heads will acquire the skills and
knowledge for addressing problems. The involvement of the city department heads and other

Community Of Practice
Introduction
As our world becomes increasingly complex, it is important for today's leaders to develop a network
of committed individuals who are willing to share knowledge and wisdom, challenge beliefs, and
invest in each other's success. These networks or communities of practice take many different forms,
such as professional learning communities (PLC), professional learning networks (PLN), mentoring,
coaching, social media groups, or social media chats. Even though each community may take many
different shapes and forms, they share common characteristics, such as a mutual interest, meaningful
interaction, and the investment of time. Although communities of practice require a significant
investment of time, interaction, and commitment, I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without time spent interacting and developing relationships with a group of individuals, we fail to
establish the trust that is necessary for growth to occur. Time helps develop the trust which is
required to challenge our thinking, motivate us to learn from others, and cultivate growth. A good
example of this occurred during the time of Jesus' three–year ministry on earth. He invested a
substantial amount of time mentoring, coaching, and challenging his disciples to adequately prepare
them to share the gospel throughout Europe and Asia.
In our fast–paced society, finding time is a difficult task; however, throughout my interviews with
leaders from various professions, I have been reminded me of the correlation between time and
growth. Not only is time essential for developing trust, but it is also critical to growth. Many of the
leaders I interviewed have learned to spent significant amounts of time disciplining themselves
practice their skills, learn from others, and challenge their beliefs. Although I have always enjoyed
learning, I have found that I have isolated myself in my learning experiences. At times, I have
ignored and failed to appreciate the contributions of others. My ignorance has blinded me from
trying new ideas, challenging old beliefs, and trusting others enough to cultivate

The Impact Of Community Service On The Community
Community service is simply defined as non–paid work done by an individual, group, or
organization that benefits the community. While community service is commonly interchanged with
volunteerism, these two terms should not be interchanged with each other since the former could be
a mandatory task or requirement in certain situations. These situations include requirements for
being granted citizenship to a country, class projects or requirements, and it can also serve as a
corrective sanction for criminal charges.
Before we discuss the value of community service and its impacts on the individual, let us first look
into the relationship of the individual and to the society. With man being a social being, one can
never separate himself not only from his immediate community but to the larger society as well.
Since time immemorial, man has relied on the various mechanisms of community in order to
address his needs for survival. We can observe man's reliance on the community even dating back to
the prehistoric era. During this time, the primitive communal mode of production was dominant
among communities, where everyone had a part to play in feeding and taking care of the community
members. But this was not only the duties of the community members. While survival was the
primary interest during the primitive communal stage of society, by staying and living within a
community, mean learned to develop values, culture, and of course a set of rules to govern the
community and maintain

I never saw the term community as being important before this semester. After taking this course I
have realized that community is not as simple as the people living around you. Community is not
limited to location, it's also based on your lifestyle, religion, culture, education, and abilities.
Learning about different communities and what makes them a community was interesting.
Communities are part of everyday life and have positive affects on the individuals involved. The
most intriguing communities we studied and learned about were the jewish community in Trent
1475 and the prevocational community at Kalix. These two communities stood out the most to me
and I enjoyed learning about them both throughout the course. The Kalix community is similar to
our community at MSU. I admire the relationships everyone at Kalix had. They had such strong

Discourse Community
The conversation of assimilation into a discourse community has been a long standing presence in
academic conversation. Especially if a religious community is given the title of a discourse
community. Typical methods of assimilating new members into a desired religion usually standout.
For example, representatives of a religious organization go door to door to give out information
about the religion is common practice, it a simply direct. Daniel Olson states in his research that
smaller religious groups find more committed members through leaving and joining the group,
compared to larger religious groups (359). Although Rahsaan Maxwell and Erik Bleich uses

Mission Statement On Community And Community Service In...
I hope you are doing well. As one of the members of the youth, I would like to address a concern of
mine involving the youth group. Our church's mission statement is experience, equip, and severe. As
a whole, I feel that the youth group is lacking in the area of service. Not only is community service
important to our church, I also believe it is crucial to have our youth involved in community
outreach to promote emotional and spiritual growth. I believe our youth should participate in more
community outreach because it will counter selfish tendencies, allow the youth to feel helpful, and
promote our church's presence in our community.
Let's face the fact, in general, the youth today are very selfish and narcissistic. It's all about having
the coolest clothes, the newest iPhone, or how many likes and retweets they can get. It sometimes
seems as if caring for others has completely disappeared from their thought process. They have very
much embraced the selfie lifestyle. Along with selfishness and narcissism, the youth also seem to
have become somewhat ungrateful. Although some may say that this is how typical teenagers act, I
think over the past few years it has become more and more prevalent. Despite that fact, is it not our
job as a youth group to try to work against the negative stereotypes and better ourselves. To
overcome and rise above the low expectations we typically have. This is why I believe creating and
promoting community outreach opportunities is so important.

To begin, one can give money as a form of contribution, however, giving time is best. I would
contribute most of my time to the scholar community by doing community service. Due to my
contribution in my own community, I have the experience to help others, whether it be organizing a

clinics and clinics that are a part of a larger chain. Each of these assets show the diversity in the
medical care offered in the Edgewater and Rogers Park community. For example, the assets that we
found were mostly privately owned and the clinics that are part of a larger chain such as the clinics
in Walgreens or CVS, were small and run by only a few people. There weren't any assets that were
part of a large medical institution such as Advocate or Nova health. There was only one hospital
which is Methodist Hospital which is one of the largest assets we found. This illustrates how in the
Edgewater and Rogers Park community, smaller and more convenient methods of receiving
healthcare is emphasized more than larger scale hospitals. The asset that I researched and
interviewed was Physicians Immediate Care on 6140 North Broadway in Edgewater Chicago. This
is a small clinic which is actually part of a larger chain of clinics that are located in Nebraska,
Indiana, and Illinois. This particular clinic was run by the Physician Assistant. I learned through the
interview that the Physician Assistant can perform many of the tasks that a Doctor could, however,
they must practice under a Doctor's license. The Physician Assistant I interviewed said that a Doctor

The greatest challenges we face has nothing to do with the season of the year, it is with hospitals
discharging patients more quickly to shorten the length of stay and the acuity of the patients in the
community are much higher which necessitates the clinicians that are more skilled than ever. As of
now they have to take care of patients with tracheostomy, peg tube feeding, long term chest tubes,
nephrostomy tubes and ventilators and administer antibiotics. The job of the community health

the example of Hurricane sandy when they had to go visiting homes of patients who were oxygen

Essay On White Community
As a white person, you are allowed to have a sense of community. You are allowed to be part of a
community. You are also allowed to be a community leader, a pillar of the community, and an asset
to the community, but at no time will you be labeled as being from a "white community." A white
person who goes on a killing spree will never be reported to have "ties to the white community."
Timothy McVeigh, Dylann Roof, Eric Harris, and Jane Toppan; all murderers, all white and not of
them referred to as "having ties to the white community." None of them have ties to the Baptist
community, the Catholic community or any community at all. None of these people reflect poorly
on white people all over the world and in a local community. None of them cause people on the
street to see a white person and think, "OH, hey, there's a white person, I bet they are planning a
mass murder." Most media stations, when reporting on a violent act, carried out by someone with a
status other than white, the community that society assigns to them will most likely be discussed at
great length. For example, the trouble young man who stabbed people at the mall in Minnesota this

A Community Service At The Corporation For National And...
According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, the state of Nebraska spends
61.3 million hours a year doing community service. It also take 20 hours to learn and know
something very well, according to Forbes (Schawbel). With those two facts in mind, Nebraskan's
could have potentially learned 306,500 new things a year volunteering. When you 're introduced to
something new, you will gain a lot experience or knowledge in that new area. Therefore, when we
are spending that much time with our community, we will learn a lot about the people living in our
community and test what we thought we already knew based on stereotypes. While giving yourself
to your community during community service, one may find themselves further grasping, becoming
a part of, and deviating norms throughout their involvement. I have taken part in a community
service for many years that has taught me many things and given me insight into the community that
I live in.
I have a unique background in community service. I am involved in an organization called

friends. My grandfather started this team, and after he passed away, my dad took over. This team has

Defining Community
Defining Community
What makes a community? To get a better handle on this question, it may be useful to analyze a
specific encounter between the individual and his community(s). Let's take, for example, the much–
publicized soccer match between Mexico and the U.S. in the summer of 1996. This game received a
great deal of media attention because, even though the match was held in Los Angeles, on U.S. soil,
the vast majority of fans were cheering for the Mexican team. The U.S. team members, on the other
hand, were greeted with a chorus of boos and were pelted with various objects on the field. This
trend in urban areas of largely Hispanic support for the teams of other countries was hardly new for
U.S. soccer; the players and coaches ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Implicit in this reaction is our assumption that individuality and community are inversely
proportional. The French sociologist Emile Durkheim seems to support this view:
. . . there are in the consciousness of each of us two consciousnesses: one which is common to our
whole group, which . . . is not ourselves, but is society living and acting within us; the other
represents us at our most personal and distinctive, in everything that makes us an individual. The
solidarity that derives from similarities is at its maximum when the collective consciousness
completely envelops our total consciousness . . . but, at that moment, our individuality is nil. 1
He describes the relationship between individuality and community as a zero–sum. Durkheim argues
that we can become more collective only insofar as we sacrifice our individuality and vice–versa.
And if we agree that the relationship between individuality and community is a zero–sum, is there a
feasible balance between the two? Or must we shy away from community of any type because of the
risk that our individuality will become nil?
I would like to suggest, in response to the original question, "What makes a community?" that we
become a community by virtue of asking the question rather than by any particular answer to it we
give. Our community–by–collective–self–interrogation depends on setting almost nothing beyond

Community Assessment Part One
Crawford County, Kansas is very familiar to me; it is where I was born and raised and now, as an
adult, it is where I work as a nurse. Barriers to healthcare exists in every community. There is a high
amount of poverty in Crawford County that contributes to barriers to access to healthcare.
Furthermore, Crawford County has several stakeholders that influence the health of the community
and advanced practice registered nurse (ARNP) practice. In this assessment of my community, I will
identify Crawford County, as well as prevalent health care barriers and important stakeholders in my
community.
Community Identification
Crawford County is located in the southeast corner of Kansas. Crawford County is a short drive
from the Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas border and is about an hour and a half from both
Kansas City, Missouri and Tulsa, Oklahoma. Crawford County is where I have lived my whole life,
as well as where I plan on working as an APRN, which is why I chose Crawford County for the
community assessment. The healthcare of a community relies on many factors, such as healthcare
facilities and providers, patients, stakeholders, and barriers and assets to care. Awareness of the
community will help the APRN to understand and better serve their community.

How might Porter, Rose, and, Swales think about an individual's identity within a larger community,
when entering new writing contexts, who has authority in a discourse community, and, how might
negotiation with authority affect an outsider? When we write an individual piece before we are
aware of discourse communities, we as writers have no rules because we are the writers and readers
of our own works. However, once we as individuals communicate within a community we share
concepts that we understand while learning what a communities' limitations and rules are. Rose
introduces the concepts of identity and authority with individual limitations that we develop over the

Communitites
When most people talk about community, they think of a location, an area in which people live. By
definition "community" is a group of people living in the same location and under the same
government. Community can also be defined as a group of people with the same common interests
or segments in society. However, these definitions, which can be found in any dictionary, are only
the tip of the iceberg when it comes to explaining what community really is. Community is the
memories and traditions of a certain area, as well as the interactions and responsibilities of its
members. In order to truly belong to a community people must follow a set of values. These
communal values are needed to provide stability among ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many times it is the responsibility of the community to speak out about problems. Communities are
"the only effective power that can limit consumption, pollution, and the degradation of nature"
(Ehrenfeld 21). A program such as Neighborhood Watch is a good example of people coming
together on a community level to fix and prevent problems.
Another aspect of good community, which can be seen in farm communities, is the idea of
stewardship and treatment of the land. In the past, the communal system in farm communities was
that everyone relied on each other for survival. Then with the introduction of modern economic
systems, that was drastically changed in some areas. Farmers then relied more on making a profit
and getting the most money out of their land. David Kline represented his ideas that one must be "a
steward to the mysteries of god" (39). This example of how farm communities have changed
resembles some of the problems facing large rural communities today.
One major problem with communities today is that people frequently move between different areas
where every house looks identical. Such communities are like packaged communities and lack
dynamism. Harry W. Paige would call people living in packaged communities, "the rootless ones,"
because they lack a sense of place and belonging. Paige also expresses the idea of retirement
communities and how they can never mimic the real feeling of home. Even if they claim to be living

Connection To Australian Communities

Bring the community connection back to life. In every town, in every city from the West Coast of

my answer, I grew up in a small town on the West Coast of Tasmania, our community was strong,
our community was fun, nevertheless, we always had something to do around the town, but now that
community and many other communities have slowly died with major need of revival for Australia's

Our communities need a shakeup to give our local youth and families the best chance in life.

Community Engagement In The Community
Engaging ourselves as well as engaging in the community with issues of our society makes us open
to different things. Community engagement is the process of working with individuals and groups to
achieve specific goals. It involves community members with making decisions and taking action.
This process of creating a relationship with community members in society that can maintain a
mission with an ultimate goal of making something better. It's an ongoing process with collaborative
work, cooperative dialogue, collective decisions and shared ownership. There are many different
activities that community engagement is involved with, which are community service, internships,
voter's registration, service–learning and etc. The primary focus of community engagement is the
practice of moving communities towards change.
The transformation from high school to college was very big for me. Only because I was a loner and
I didn't really get involved with groups nor did I have a social life outside of playing basketball.
When I came to college I made up in my mind that I was going to change. Once I was introduced to
the four pathways that Methodist offered I decide to choose community engagement. Community
engagement fits me best because it gives me a chance to interact with people and also voices my
opinion. I wanted to work on enhancing this aspect because I'm a very shy person with a lot to say.

Morgan's Imagined Communities
1.
"Imagined communities," according to Anderson, are a form of speech communities created by the
mass–production of shared media. They are "imagined" because members will never meet all other
members face–to–face. The Morgan piece on speech communities begins by describing a music
video, which itself begins with two rappers speaking on the phone in different languages in different
countries. After a conversation, the two meet–up in person and begin the song. Morgan describes
this as a speech community formed around a shared style of music, with members of the community
belonging to various demographics. This would fit Anderson's model of imagined communities as
the community is formed around a shared consumption of a form of media with members who will
never interact with most other members. Anderson's model is primarily criticized for two reasons: it
is too vertical and it ignores hierarchy within communities.

Characteristics Of A Discourse Community
The human identity is worn as a mask with shapeshifting capabilities and espionage. In the real
world, this mask appears simplistic; however, the internet is an abstract space of node connections
that streams a wild flurry of ideas, people, and identities. One's mask does not need a definition to
stand firmly in this chaos but merely need to express what is hidden beneath the mask: humanity.
That is what it means to have the right to anonymity, the freedom of expression and the right to be
protected from outside entities who will stop at nothing to forcefully seize the mask along with
physical data. One discourse community dedicated to protecting the rights to anonymity is the Tor
Project, a worldwide group that helps create an anonymous browser to hide identity details and
participates in establishing it in journalism, academia, activism, and normal users. The exploration
of the rights of anonymity will be examined through the discourse community characteristics of Tor
by reviewing Porters and Swales works in discourse communities, by using methods of primary
investigation through interviewing Tor members, and discussing how Tor fits into Swales six
characteristics of a discourse community.

Community Policing Defined
Community policing
Community policing is defined as a " philosophy that promotes organizational strategies, which
support the systematic use of partnerships and problem–solving techniques, to proactively address
the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and
fear of crime" according to the U.S. Department of Justice. (U. S. Department of Justice). In other
words the main goal of community policing is the allocation of various police agencies/staff to
particular areas around the community so they become familiar with its inhabitants and lifestyle.
This style of policing attempts to modify the department through a system called de–
bureaucratization and has four major goals to meet. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Assigning key officers to permanent locations, Chicago officers could gain greater knowledge of the
community problems and how to solve them responsibly. Community policing displays the basic
elements of policing and it has some helped shape recent policing strategies such as Problem–
Oriented Policing and Zero Tolerance Policing. The most important obvious difference from other
policing strategies is that it represents a major change in the basic role of a police officer.
Traditionally police officers were used to only fight crime, with community policing it broaden their
role to order maintenance, conflict resolution and social and physical disorders within the home.
Problem–oriented policing main focus is based on law, order and fear problems. Unlike Community
policing, POP opts that officers should address particular problems and develop creative responses
to each one. Instead of a "crime fighter" image officers under the POP ideology function as problem
solvers, planners, and community advocates. POP and Community Policing are very similar in their
police tactics however, the newly accepted Zero–tolerance Policy is very different. It is
characterized by interventions that aggressively enforce criminal/civil laws and that are conducted
for the purpose of restoring order to communities. This theory believes through harsh and aggressive
enforcement of laws, crime will cause the community to be more inclined to care which will

Community Reflection

  • 1. Community Reflection It would be an understatement to say that I have been blessed to grow up in a neighborhood where I knew nothing bad would happen to me. It would be an understatement to say that I can go to bed knowing all the doors in the house are locked and my house is secure. It would be not be false to say that these things are given to me each day, but it would be an understatement to say I am thankful for each thing. An error is falling down your stairs because you did not turn a light on, but a mistake would be taking any of this security for granted. I know these things not because of what I have achieved in my life, but a result of my fathers job. He stands as the fire captain in Davenport, Iowa. Listening to some of the horror stories from his job, has widened my perspective on not only life, but in the small minor details surrounding everything. I can say I am more grateful for being able to have the understanding of safety, that if ever in a bad situation, I would step in to take risks and protect those around me. In today's society, crime is such a common thing and often occurs within small communities. I remember reading and learning about history and how communities would always be there to help one another. But today, community is such an overused word, and does not describe what one is at all. The foundation of a community revolves around the people who risk their lives day in and day out, to be there to protect us and get us out of harm's way. The hardest times in life, ... • 3. Arcata Community Forestry Managing a forest with and for the people: Community forestry and environmental public participation in the case of Arcata, California 1. Introduction All across the United States, historical patterns of resource extraction have led to degradation and fragmentation of forest landscapes. When a community depends on those resources, a local crisis can emerge from this process of degradation. To reverse this scenario, community forestry became a popular approach in the 1970s as a modern policy and practice (Baker and Kusel, 2003). This model was based on a simple assumption: as local people already use and rely on the natural resources of their forests, they are in the best position to conserve them. However, recent literature has show that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This forest is a great recreational attraction, both for locals and for tourist, due to its extensive trail systems which supports hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. The city is also home of the Humboldt State University, and the community forest is a place where students can achieve or expand their ecological knowledge and awareness. The Arcata Community Forest was dedicated in 1955, being the first municipally–owned forest in California, with the purpose of being managed to the benefits of all citizens with attention to to watershed, recreation, timber production and other values (Andre, ... • 5. Community Collaboration Paper Community collaboration and leadership, with emphasis upon entrepreneurial leadership, and the role of sustained dialog in the application of economic development and growth in rural regions, are the subjects of this essay. Multi–community collaboration is a broader, more horizontal interaction of people to meet their common needs. This process is a popular strategy for rural development (Wilkinson, 1992). It is an emergent process that does not just occur, but evolves through a complex and dynamic integration of ecological, social and psychological factors (Wilkinson, 1992). Because rural townships and settlements are generally isolated, and tend to lack individually, in ecological, community field and other vital resources to achieve ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though a private, therefore, closely held initiative, a project of the scope planned could have never gotten off the drawing board without the input, support and guidance of local leaders. Thousands of hours of discussion, planning and work have gone into this master plan development. Though self– interested, ethical, transformational, global leadership can present new and innovative ways to bring growth and development to a region, with, or without federal or state government as its principal benefactor as Bridger asserts. In regions that have had no appreciable growth or development in over 65 years, leadership, the creation and funding of thousands of high quality jobs, is transformational. In majority poor, black, underserved communities in the US, waiting on the federal or state government to change ones condition, is no longer an option. Instead, Korshing's assertion of adaption is the key. Notwithstanding, the approval of the local elite, leaders converged and have succeeded in acquiring funding to transform a region, a Bridger assertion, proven incorrect. Innovative planning, sustained dialog with local leaders and entrepreneurial leadership will soon yield over 100 thousand jobs, impact 3 Southern states, directly impact over 15 counties and bring an infusion of billions of global dollars, into a region in desperate need of ... • 7. A Small Community : My Community In A Small Town Community Small Town Communities The neighborhood I live in is called Sugar Mill Pond; it's surrounded by fields and has a huge pond in the middle of it; it's located in South Louisiana in Youngsville in between two cities New Iberia and Lafayette. The town Youngsville and Sugar Mill Pond has become one of the happiest places to live and work; both have become both my community because of how small the town is so everyone knows everybody. It accommodates residents; it is surrounded by multiple schools, retail shops, and businesses. Its location offers large amount of entertainment, and a sense of caring in the air. My community comes together for any aspect that is needed, big or small problems. I would describe my neighborhood and town's atmosphere as a warm, bright aesthetically pleasing place. I walk around the neighborhood and I see blue houses, white houses and, yellow houses; I find the feeling as a beach atmosphere because, of the way the houses look and they all have open windows that people have a beautiful view of the pond. As people walk around the pond in my neighborhood people can easily talk to anyone and have a nice chat. I see kids playing with other kids going back and forth to each other's houses; I see the parents interacting with the other kid's parents forming that similarity or bond of the same dynamitic in the kids. This forms a community for the kids and as well as the parents. Our streets in the neighborhood aren't like any others; we hear laughter of kids ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Udean Community : The Utopian Sense Of Community The Utopian Sense of Community It is interesting the idea of a community, what is it stand for in the general perspective? Does it mean a nation state, a specific group, or just a neighborhood for that instance? There are many metrics make up a perfect community, from a utilitarian perspective to a unique personality one community has to offer. Above it all, in my opinion, the metric that has an outsized impact would have to be the priority of its people's welfare. The term "ideal community" tends to us to think of the unattainable idea of a utopian society. First, let us break down the term "community", the Oxford Dictionary defines the term, "a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common" or "a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals". Second of all, the term "ideal" means succeeding one's concept of what is perfect or suitable. Since the ideal is often regarded individually, I would like to start talking about the community as a group of people that share the same characteristic, such as attending the same institution. Many people would think an ideal community involves with an inviting environment, where people can enjoy their days together by a strong sense of leisure, besides working, because (let's face it) recreational hobby is a powerful factor that makes us all have a happy life. For example, when I go to school, I think being able to work hard with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Importance Of Community Service For Your Community And... Have you ever thought about what community service would do for your community or the community of others? Or at least thought of the impact that it could have on not only you , but others as well? Community Service or volunteering has a certain importance to it. Community service is helpful when trying to build or better a community for not only those in the community but you as well. By volunteering people gain compassion and understanding of the world around them. When people volunteer, they usually volunteer in a project that they're really passionate about, which gives them the opportunity to volunteer with as much time that is available. Community service is way to bring a nation together. It is like the key point of a country, as there is a great amount of importance of doing good for others. Community service is a handy service because it is the best way to create a sense of responsibility to people. With so many things going wrong in the world today, normal everyday people have the opportunity to fulfill a sense of purpose and they have the chance to make their "world" a better place. Community service is not only fun and rewarding experience, it also looks good really good on a resume. By people stepping up to volunteer, it gives them a great sense of newfound purpose as well. By giving back through community service this brings not only joy to those who are being helped but a sense of pride and accomplishment for the person who is participating in community ... • 13. Community Analysis Community is like an extended family. We support each other in so many ways, whether it's volunteering at a fundraiser, offering advice or even just a smile and kind words. I live in a small town which means a lot of things, but most importantly that I grew up with a strong sense of community. I'll be graduating with a class of about eighty of my peers this year and I've gone to school with about half of these students since Kindergarten. This gave me the opportunity to grow strong bonds with those around me. These experiences will help me to enrich the sense of community that UW– has worked so hard to create. Helping each other learn and grow has and always will be important to me. I have played sports for my whole life. Getting good grades has always been important to me, no matter what. During the first two years of high school I struggled with my science classes. Although I was putting in the time and effort, some of the concepts were difficult for me to understand and apply. Despite this setback, I have stayed on the honor roll since 6th grade. However, just being on the honor roll wasn't my end goal. I was determined to go above and beyond and not settle for anything other than my very best. For me it's not just about finishing something, but doing it to the best of my abilities. As a freshman I joined Future Farmers of America. I have enjoyed the opportunities it has afforded me. Some of these include National Convention, judging contests, community events, and being an officer. It has been so rewarding to give back to my community and to meet people from all around the nation who share similar values. • 15. Community Scholarship Essay Growing up in such a small town, community was something deeply ingrained into my life from a very young age. Community was something cultivated through one's obligations to help fellow citizens, the overall ideology of benefits reaped through community service, and the beauty and heart of a tight–knit community. In my small Texas town, community was the lifeblood coursing through the veins of winding asphalt backroads, surrounded by agriculture. In my hometown, hospitality and helping others went hand in helping hand. Almost every weekend, a group of people host benefit plate sales, or raffles, as means of benefitting and serving another community member. These acts of kindness ranged from assisting a suffering member of the community, a community team yearning to travel and compete for the town's name, or to help cover medical expenses for the ill and seriously injured. When these events happen, majority of the community feels a subconscious obligation to, in some way, contribute to the improvement of the cause behind the plate or raffle. For example, my family and others, do not always have time permitted to actively serve at these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This help came in the form of counselors ready to listen to every falling tear, fellow citizens reaching out to care for the mourning family, and peers comforting each other regardless of who you were. To start, I have participated in the Lisbon Community Band and provided musical entertainment for the community to enjoy free of charge. Each year, my town band has a winter and summer concert. These concerts include a new set of songs for the community to hear. Music relaxes the mind and is believed to have certain healing properties. I have been in my town's community band for eight years now and I plan to be a member for as long as I can. The community band is a valuable and necessary aspect of my community. As a Boy Scout, we also aided other organizations, such as the Lisbon Historical Society. Furthermore, my troop assisted in running events, such as my town's fall festival. My community extends to other parts of the state, as I have volunteered for organizations in nearby towns. One such organization that I volunteer at is the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London. I volunteer in the summers in the Lawrence and Memorial Lobby shop gift shop. I feel I am able to make a difference in the life of those who come into the gift shop. Specifically, I attempt to bring smiles to the faces of the customers and make their experience in the gift shop enjoyable. Another organization I volunteer for is the Slater Library in Jewett City. One summer I developed a reading and science experiment program that lasted for many weeks and motivated children to read, as well as become interested in the sciences. • 19. Essay on The Importance of Community Community is very important and has many factors like kinship, unity, and identity. Community helps society because it creates solutions, provides security and reveals dedication. It discovers truthfulness. Communities are part of everyday life and have positive affects on its members. Communities can be found everywhere and can be created anywhere. You may be unaware of it, but you are part of a community not only based on your location, but also based on your lifestyle, your religion, your heritage, your education, or your abilities. As Hewitt once said, "Community provides a psychological world and a place of identification for its members." Identifying yourself with a particular community may be easier than it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Observing others' behaviors lets one realize and understand more about different types and kinds of people. Seeing how certain groups or communities act or react to situations lets us see more perspective and hopefully appreciate their point of view. It is important to be part of communities for much of the same reason. When you are part of a group, you understand and compromise with the other members of the group. Discussing issues involving the community helps to lead to solutions. Talking things through with other members improves social skills as well as relationships. Knowing how people feel about certain issues let you know more about that person, and in turn, you learn more about yourself. Hearing what other people have to say may sway your own opinions about something. For example, maybe you are part of a church you thought you really believed in, but hearing the discussions at the church meetings you start to think that you do not belong in this community. Though that specific church may be the right place for many, you learn that you need a new church community. Churches are communities because the members are unified in their common beliefs. These communities are like families because the members support and help each other religiously and they feel secure. Being a sound part of a community, you should continuously learn more and more about yourself. As a member of a club, taking part in meetings and activities let you learn ... • 21. Community Reflection Paper I recently had the privilege of spending a week with a community called Furaha Community Center that provides education, social services, and community action efforts within a slum community called Haruma located in Nairobi, Kenya. The community of Haruma has roughly 500,000 people living in the equivalent of 12 square blocks. The community suffers from poor sanitation, rampant disease, and violence. Furaha Community Center serves the poorest and the sickest of the community in efforts to provide food, education, micro loans, and social services. The community is defined by some outsiders as poor, sick, dirty, lazy, disease ridden, gang infested, violent, sexually deviant, uneducated (education is not free in Kenya so many families cannot afford to send their children to school) and beyond hope. Although some of these descriptors are partially true, I found the community to be generous, supportive, hard–working, resilient, and joyful. To live in Haruma and be a member of the community you have a difficult life. Tribal hierarchy defines your ability to obtain opportunities to better yourself. Religion is a source of comfort, but is also used by some religious leaders as a way gain power and influence over the desperate. Most people work as "day laborers" and live day to day. They often do not eat every day because they cannot find work. Fires, building collapses, gang activity, and violence are a part of everyday life. Diseases spread rapidly while no medical care ... • 23. Define Community Analysis Community, what is community? How would you define it? Community can be defined as a geographic location in a way that a group of individuals live in the same area like a neighborhood, a city, a district, a town, or a country. In simplest terms, it is where you live. However, individuals can also feel a sense of community through the place where they grew up or where they often go and visit. It can also be a group of individuals who have certain characteristics in common such as religion, race or ethnicity, culture, beliefs, professional and economic ties, interests, and more. Individuals refer themselves to particular attributes or affinities (what individuals like to do). For example, individuals say I belong to an Asian community or I belong to an art community. As such, community bestows one a sense of identity (who people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though individuals are different and unique from each other, they all come to one because of that one particular shared interest. For me, community is bigger than that. I believe that community is diversity, kinship, unity, identity, cooperation, passion, similarity, strength, motivation, and guidance. The word community does not only limit itself to a group of individuals who have shared characteristics, interests, and experiences, but it also goes beyond the idea of a group of diverse individuals coming together. These are individuals who have different ethnicities, race, religion, culture, traditions, and so forth. Within a community is where one develops relationships with other people over time by means of interacting and communicating regularly, whether it would be in person or online. Thus, a better understanding of the surroundings and in greater span, the world, is formed. Community is where it starts. Differences are set aside. Discourse Community In America A discourse community is a group of individual who all have the same shared ideals, beliefs, values, and rules––all communicated with using the discourse community's own established language. For example, a grouping of innovative scientists are describing new ways of curing diseases, using their own terminologies some people may find confusing because they are possibly not a part of that community overall. Community Oriented Policing Community Oriented Policing In spite of the fact that the United States still exceeds many other industrialized nations in overall crime and violent crime, it has been effective in decreasing its crime rate, particularly during the 1990s. While some coalitions have attributed this positive development to changes in socio– demographic trends and rigid enforcement approaches, one coalition highlights the success of the community–oriented policing and problem–oriented policing in eradicating the root causes of crime (Stephens, 2003). While I don't believe that community oriented policing in the sole cause of decreased crime rates I do believe that it has its positive and negative sides. The problem with this model is that it is difficult for police departments to dedicate officer to public relations while there are serious crimes that need to be prevented. The idea of the public reporting crimes to the police in a community meeting is acceptable but in many cases especially with the current economic crisis that we are facing, it is impossible for police departments to have officers strictly assigned to community police. As discussed earlier without full cooperation from both sides the practice of community police is ineffective. The community policing plan created by the City of Aberdeen in Maryland provides a good example of how the partnership between the police and members of the community can be effective for dealing with crimes. In order to promote the police and community's adoption of these new roles, the Mid–Atlantic Regional Community Policing Institute (MARCPI), along with the Johns Hopkins University, will offer training to the police and the community. Both the police and the community have to learn how to change their thinking processes in order to deal with the problems in a proactive way, instead of the conventional reactive fashion. Time helps develop the trust which is required to challenge our thinking, motivate us to learn from others, and cultivate growth. A good example of this occurred during the time of Jesus' three–year ministry on earth. He invested a substantial amount of time mentoring, coaching, and challenging his disciples to adequately prepare them to share the gospel throughout Europe and Asia. In our fast–paced society, finding time is a difficult task; however, throughout my interviews with leaders from various professions, I have been reminded me of the correlation between time and growth. Not only is time essential for developing trust, but it is also critical to growth. Many of the leaders I interviewed have learned to spent significant amounts of time disciplining themselves practice their skills, learn from others, and challenge their beliefs. Although I have always enjoyed learning, I have found that I have isolated myself in my learning experiences. At times, I have ignored and failed to appreciate the contributions of others. • 31. The Impact Of Community Service On The Community Community service is simply defined as non–paid work done by an individual, group, or organization that benefits the community. While community service is commonly interchanged with volunteerism, these two terms should not be interchanged with each other since the former could be a mandatory task or requirement in certain situations. These situations include requirements for being granted citizenship to a country, class projects or requirements, and it can also serve as a corrective sanction for criminal charges. Before we discuss the value of community service and its impacts on the individual, let us first look into the relationship of the individual and to the society. With man being a social being, one can never separate himself not only from his immediate community but to the larger society as well. Since time immemorial, man has relied on the various mechanisms of community in order to address his needs for survival. We can observe man's reliance on the community even dating back to the prehistoric era. During this time, the primitive communal mode of production was dominant among communities, where everyone had a part to play in feeding and taking care of the community members. But this was not only the duties of the community members. While survival was the primary interest during the primitive communal stage of society, by staying and living within a community, mean learned to develop values, culture, and of course a set of rules to govern the community and maintain ... • 33. Kalix: Community Analysis I never saw the term community as being important before this semester. After taking this course I have realized that community is not as simple as the people living around you. Community is not limited to location, it's also based on your lifestyle, religion, culture, education, and abilities. Learning about different communities and what makes them a community was interesting. Communities are part of everyday life and have positive affects on the individuals involved. The most intriguing communities we studied and learned about were the jewish community in Trent 1475 and the prevocational community at Kalix. These two communities stood out the most to me and I enjoyed learning about them both throughout the course. The Kalix community is similar to our community at MSU. I admire the relationships everyone at Kalix had. They had such strong connections and friendships unlike us. Our church's mission statement is experience, equip, and severe. As a whole, I feel that the youth group is lacking in the area of service. Not only is community service important to our church, I also believe it is crucial to have our youth involved in community outreach to promote emotional and spiritual growth. I believe our youth should participate in more community outreach because it will counter selfish tendencies, allow the youth to feel helpful, and promote our church's presence in our community. Let's face the fact, in general, the youth today are very selfish and narcissistic. It's all about having the coolest clothes, the newest iPhone, or how many likes and retweets they can get. It sometimes seems as if caring for others has completely disappeared from their thought process. They have very much embraced the selfie lifestyle. Along with selfishness and narcissism, the youth also seem to have become somewhat ungrateful. Although some may say that this is how typical teenagers act, I think over the past few years it has become more and more prevalent. Despite that fact, is it not our job as a youth group to try to work against the negative stereotypes and better ourselves. To overcome and rise above the low expectations we typically have. For example, the assets that we found were mostly privately owned and the clinics that are part of a larger chain such as the clinics in Walgreens or CVS, were small and run by only a few people. There weren't any assets that were part of a large medical institution such as Advocate or Nova health. To get a better handle on this question, it may be useful to analyze a specific encounter between the individual and his community(s). Let's take, for example, the much– publicized soccer match between Mexico and the U.S. in the summer of 1996. This game received a great deal of media attention because, even though the match was held in Los Angeles, on U.S. soil, the vast majority of fans were cheering for the Mexican team. Implicit in this reaction is our assumption that individuality and community are inversely proportional. The French sociologist Emile Durkheim seems to support this view: . . . there are in the consciousness of each of us two consciousnesses: one which is common to our whole group, which . . . is not ourselves, but is society living and acting within us; the other represents us at our most personal and distinctive, in everything that makes us an individual. The solidarity that derives from similarities is at its maximum when the collective consciousness completely envelops our total consciousness . . . but, at that moment, our individuality is nil. 1 He describes the relationship between individuality and community as a zero–sum. Durkheim argues that we can become more collective only insofar as we sacrifice our individuality and vice–versa. And if we agree that the relationship between individuality and community is a zero–sum, is there a feasible balance between the two? Or must we shy away from community of any type because of the risk that our individuality will become nil? I would like to suggest, in response to the original question, "What makes a community?" that we become a community by virtue of asking the question rather than by any particular answer to it we give. Communities are "the only effective power that can limit consumption, pollution, and the degradation of nature" (Ehrenfeld 21). A program such as Neighborhood Watch is a good example of people coming together on a community level to fix and prevent problems. Another aspect of good community, which can be seen in farm communities, is the idea of stewardship and treatment of the land. In the past, the communal system in farm communities was that everyone relied on each other for survival. Then with the introduction of modern economic systems, that was drastically changed in some areas. Farmers then relied more on making a profit and getting the most money out of their land. David Kline represented his ideas that one must be "a steward to the mysteries of god" (39). This example of how farm communities have changed resembles some of the problems facing large rural communities today. One major problem with communities today is that people frequently move between different areas where every house looks identical. Such communities are like packaged communities and lack dynamism. The information can also be carried on and utilized within many other professions. I have shared many of my learning experiences from this class with family and friends and have passed on a lot of knowledge. I honestly feel taking this class in a classroom would have been more educational to me. The use of visuals and hands on is a way I like to learn and as a result I would have retained and understood more in this area. Having an experience professional in the career already attending the class and sharing would have helped me too. Even though I did take this class online and a lot of topics were covered in a short amount of time a lot of good information was taken in. It does help that I have experienced on some level of the topics that were presented. There's always room for more growth while learning more on the topic of health in community development. Things are always changing, growing, and expanding, including the development of new Technology. I have just started the beginning of what all it entails. I think it would be helpful to have learned more on the solution to some of the problems presented. A lot of the topics were interesting to read about, but on some I felt the need ... • 74. Morgan's Imagined Communities 1. "Imagined communities," according to Anderson, are a form of speech communities created by the mass–production of shared media. They are "imagined" because members will never meet all other members face–to–face. The Morgan piece on speech communities begins by describing a music video, which itself begins with two rappers speaking on the phone in different languages in different countries. After a conversation, the two meet–up in person and begin the song. Morgan describes this as a speech community formed around a shared style of music, with members of the community belonging to various demographics. This would fit Anderson's model of imagined communities as the community is formed around a shared consumption of a form of media with members who will never interact with most other members. Anderson's model is primarily criticized for two reasons: it is too vertical and it ignores hierarchy within communities. 2. A person's linguistic repertoire encompasses all forms and levels of languaging practices that individual has access to. Using this term allows a broader understanding of one's access to various languaging practices as opposed to the understanding offered by the term "language." The latter is generally understood to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 76. Characteristics Of A Discourse Community The human identity is worn as a mask with shapeshifting capabilities and espionage. In the real world, this mask appears simplistic; however, the internet is an abstract space of node connections that streams a wild flurry of ideas, people, and identities. One's mask does not need a definition to stand firmly in this chaos but merely need to express what is hidden beneath the mask: humanity. That is what it means to have the right to anonymity, the freedom of expression and the right to be protected from outside entities who will stop at nothing to forcefully seize the mask along with physical data. One discourse community dedicated to protecting the rights to anonymity is the Tor Project, a worldwide group that helps create an anonymous browser to hide identity details and participates in establishing it in journalism, academia, activism, and normal users. The exploration of the rights of anonymity will be examined through the discourse community characteristics of Tor by reviewing Porters and Swales works in discourse communities, by using methods of primary investigation through interviewing Tor members, and discussing how Tor fits into Swales six characteristics of a discourse community. Literature Review Two definitive works done by Swales and Porter has helped established on the definition and criteria of a discourse community. While Swales was the primary source of information for Porter's own piece, Porter can develop a more in–depth view on discourse communities. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Community Policing Defined Community policing Community policing is defined as a " philosophy that promotes organizational strategies, which support the systematic use of partnerships and problem–solving techniques, to proactively address the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime" according to the U.S. Department of Justice. (U. S. Department of Justice). In other words the main goal of community policing is the allocation of various police agencies/staff to particular areas around the community so they become familiar with its inhabitants and lifestyle. This style of policing attempts to modify the department through a system called de– bureaucratization and has four major goals to meet. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Assigning key officers to permanent locations, Chicago officers could gain greater knowledge of the community problems and how to solve them responsibly. Community policing displays the basic elements of policing and it has some helped shape recent policing strategies such as Problem– Oriented Policing and Zero Tolerance Policing. The most important obvious difference from other policing strategies is that it represents a major change in the basic role of a police officer. Traditionally police officers were used to only fight crime, with community policing it broaden their role to order maintenance, conflict resolution and social and physical disorders within the home. Problem–oriented policing main focus is based on law, order and fear problems. Unlike Community policing, POP opts that officers should address particular problems and develop creative responses to each one. Instead of a "crime fighter" image officers under the POP ideology function as problem solvers, planners, and community advocates. POP and Community Policing are very similar in their police tactics however, the newly accepted Zero–tolerance Policy is very different. It is characterized by interventions that aggressively enforce criminal/civil laws and that are conducted for the purpose of restoring order to communities. This theory believes through harsh and aggressive enforcement of laws, crime will cause the community to be more inclined to care which will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
