At Homes of Promise, residents are required to obtain a sober friend and mentor/sponsor within 30 days. A sober friend acts as an accountability partner for sharing struggles, victories and praying together on a regular basis. A mentor/sponsor takes on a greater role based on the 12 steps, with a longer sobriety history and commitment to mentoring the person on a long-term basis, including meeting with them on a scheduled basis and attending meetings together. Residents can ask staff any questions about finding a sober friend or mentor/sponsor.

2. Sober Friends And Mentor/Sponsor
At Homes of Promise, we require all guests to obtain a sober
friend and a Mentor/Sponsor within 30 days of moving in. Here
are the roles of sober friend and Mentor/Sponsor, as we define
them.

3. Sober Friends
Your sober friend is your accountability partner(s). He or they are
someone who is also in recovery, and may be at the same stage
as you or a little further ahead. He may be a fellow guest in the
recovery home, but that is not required; all that is required is that
he is clean and sober, and someone you are comfortable with.
Because you are both on par with each other in your recovery
journeys, you can be his sober friend as well.
We don’t require that you meet formally with one another on a
specific schedule, but we do want the assurance that you are
holding one another accountable where sobriety is concerned.
That means talking about your struggles with each other, sharing
victories with each other and praying together on a regular basis.
Your sober friend is not your Mentor/Sponsor; that is a different
role, which we will explain next.

4. Mentor/Sponsor

5. We define the role of the Mentor/Sponsor the same way
that Alcoholics Anonymous does: A person who does
everything possible, within the limits of personal experience
and knowledge, to help the newcomer get sober and stay
sober through the 12-step program. The Mentor/Sponsor
must show by present example and addiction history what
the program has meant in his life.
Because the Mentor/Sponsor assumes a greater
mentorship role, it is recommended that the sponsor be
someone who has a longer history of sobriety than the
person he is sponsoring. He should be committed to
mentoring you on a long term basis, and he should be
available to speak with you as often as possible.

6. We prefer that our guests meet with their Mentor/Sponsor on a
scheduled basis, so that they can build their relationships
quickly and effectively. Attending meetings together is one way
to meet and build your relationship; the Mentor/Sponsor can
make sure you get your card signed at the meeting, which is
required in order to prove to us that you are attending.
