2. The Topic Sentence
A topic sentence is a complete sentence of at least subject and verb: generally with
complement as well.

Controlling idea has function to control the idea discusses in all supporting sentences.
3. Kinds of Topic Sentence
Reid and Lindstorm (1985:48) divide kids of a topic sentence into:
1. A statement of opinion
2. A statement of intent
Topic sentence of statement of opinion tells the writer’s judgment of topic involving his/her
personal feeling or belief that is usually expressed by adjectives such as interesting, terrifying,
fun, etc.
Ex: Surabaya is a new metropolis with interesting places to visit.
Topic sentence of statement of intent inform the writer’s objective judgment of a topic where the
topic will be objectively explain in the paragraph.
Ex: Making lemon tea has several steps to follow.
4. Supporting sentence of a paragraph
Supporting sentences are a set of related sentences developing a topic of a
paragraph by giving details to prove, illustrate, explain, clarify, argue, or describe the
truth of the specific point stated as controlling idea in a topic sentence.
Kind of detail in supporting sentences are grouped into four classification:
1. Facts
2. Physical description due to the sense: sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste
3. Examples
4. Personal experience
Transition signal:
A transition is used to tie supporting sentences and avoid jumping idea.
A transition can be in a form of word, a phrase, a clause or a sentence.
5. Concluding Sentence
A concluding sentence is a sentence that ends the development of supporting sentences in a paragraph
smoothly and gives readers a clear visual rendering about the paragraph’s content.
