The educator has been observing the preschool children and found they are interested in houses. Over several weeks, the children will engage in activities related to houses like storytelling, role playing, art projects, and songs. These activities will support the children's literacy, imagination, creativity, math, music and fine motor skills. The educator's goal is to keep parents informed of the children's activities through newsletters and a portfolio.
1. Good day Parents and Guardians!
As soon to be early childhood educators, we are currently trained to create and implement
activities and/or projects that are developmentally appropriate and are based on children’s interest and
cues. We do this through the use of observations.
In the past weeks, I have been observing the children in
Preschool 1 – looking after their cues and interests. After conducting
an observation, a circle time and a planned activity, I found out that
they are interested with the topic of houses. I have gathered a lot of
ideas from them (ex. “Daddy paints our house” and the like) and from
there I was able to initially plan out activities that will allow further
exploration. Following their lead will enable their holistic development,
which is considered as essential, especially during their early
childhood years.
As we conduct this project for several weeks, the children will be
doing the following:
• Sharing stories related to houses which will enhance not only their literacy skills but also
language (ex. Three little pigs). At the same time, during storytelling, I will bring different
materials that are used to build a house (basing on the story) that will enable them to explore
textures. Through textures, they will be able to make use of their senses and exercise it.
• Engage in role-taking, like playing the role of a carpenter of playing out the roles inside the
house. Fantasy play will enhance their imagination, and at the same time, enables them to
share their knowledge about their surroundings (community).
• Engage in painting and drawing, which will cater to their creativity.
• Engage in sorting and/or classifying objects and shapes, which will foster for their math
skills.
• Engage in singing songs related to houses, which enables them to develop their music skills
that is believed to help them in their later years (academic years).
• Engage in gluing/pasting, scanning, cutting, hammering and glossing which will help
strengthen their fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination.
As part of the field of ECE, are goal is to keep parents involved and to keep them aware of the
children’s activities. We will be keeping you posted through newsletters, and a portfolio will be available for
your viewing as well.
Respectfully yours,
Khiara
