Major Project Completed in Genome Institution of Singapore
Genomic Sequencing
Client: GTB Group
Duration: September 2008 to March 2012
Role: Project Lead
Team size: 4
Software and Platform: Quantum StorNext File System, Quantum Storage Manager, Quantum Tape Library iScalar 500,

Other Skillset used: RHEL 5.1, CentOS 5.2 for NFS and Samba services, Network Monitoring tool (Orion SolarWinds) to
monitor the network, volume, CPU and memory of each individual performance.
In charge of setting up the infrastructure of the entire genomic sequencing pipeline in GIS. This involved the management of
sequencing data based on Quantum StorNext File System software, in tandem with the Quantum Storage Manager; to fully
automate the movement of data from production to archival stages. Recent data is pumped to high performance disk storage which
is then migrated to lower cost storage such as tapes to optimize TCO. This enabled GIS to fully optimize its storage in accordance
to its usage.
30 SAN Clients (SMPs and Clusters) which will have direct access to 8 StorNext File System, amounting of 1PB scratch pool for
sequencing machine or high performance computing usage, involve a lot of I/O Read and write, the other 300TB will be as a
archival pool to archive critical data (keep for 7 years) will then transfer to tape media using Quantum iScalar 500. We are using
EMC CX4-960, Hitachi AMS 2500, HP EVA 8400 for the backend storage, all connection is through fibre via a pair of Brocade
5100 SAN Switch to ensure the I/O pormance is optimum. All the servers’ performance and network switches are being monitored
by Orion SolarWinds.
Implemented DLC for Sequencing machines and SMPs in year 2011 to improve the data access and data transfer via StorNext
File System through IP Network. The performance is proven 3 times faster than native NFS access.

This involved the management of sequencing data based on Quantum StorNext File System software, in tandem with the Quantum Storage Manager; to fully automate the movement of data from production to archival stages. Recent data is pumped to high performance disk storage which is then migrated to lower cost storage such as tapes to optimize TCO. This enabled GIS to fully optimize its storage in accordance to its usage. 30 SAN Clients (SMPs and Clusters) which will have direct access to 8 StorNext File System, amounting of 1PB scratch pool for sequencing machine or high performance computing usage, involve a lot of I/O Read and write, the other 300TB will be as a archival pool to archive critical data (keep for 7 years) will then transfer to tape media using Quantum iScalar 500. We are using EMC CX4-960, Hitachi AMS 2500, HP EVA 8400 for the backend storage, all connection is through fibre via a pair of Brocade 5100 SAN Switch to ensure the I/O pormance is optimum. All the servers’ performance and network switches are being monitored by Orion SolarWinds. Implemented DLC for Sequencing machines and SMPs in year 2011 to improve the data access and data transfer via StorNext File System through IP Network.
