Why are we talking about this?
In 2022, it’s likely that you’ll be meeting
with more people and going to more
places.
But it can also mean that you might face a few
situations that make you feel uneasy, awkward
or angry.
Meeting and being around lots of people
can help you to learn new things, make
friends and have fun.
One reason for this could be because your (or
someone else’s) personal boundaries are
crossed. This is what you will be learning about
today.

By now, you’ve probably met a lot of different people in your life, such as…

These are called your relationships.

What are boundaries?
Every relationship that you have will be different, and
you will probably behave a little bit differently with
different people, depending on what kind of relationship
you have with them.
For example, you probably act differently at home with
your family to how you would act in school with your
teacher. This is normal!
The behaviour that you feel is okay to do (and to be
done to you) is called boundaries.
Everyone’s boundaries are different. For example,
some friends might feel okay with holding hands in the
playground, and others might not.
Your boundaries are also different for different
people. For example, it might be okay to tell your
friend where you live, but it wouldn’t be okay to tell
a stranger.

Who’s in your circle?
The best way to think about what your boundaries are
is to think about your different relationships.

On a whiteboard or piece of
paper, draw a small circle in the
middle and write your name in
it.
Draw a slightly bigger circle
around yourself. Label this
“People close to me.”
Draw a slightly bigger circle again
and label this “People I know
well.”
Lastly, draw a bigger circle again
and label this “Other people that
I know.”

Now that you’ve got your chart, can you add at least three people into each circle?

What are your boundaries? (4-6 mins)
Now you are going to see six different actions.
Each one has a number. For each one, your job
is to decide if you would be ok with this action
happening and, if so, who by. Write the number
for each action on the circles chart you just
drew.

Now that you know your boundaries, it’s time to talk
about them with your classmates. In pairs or small
groups, discuss the two questions below.
If someone does something that crosses your
boundaries, you may feel uncomfortable,
upset or even angry.
Challenge:
Choose a spokesperson to
feedback your group’s answers to
the rest of the class.
This is why it’s important that you know how to
talk about your boundaries, and what you can
do if someone crosses them.

boundaries were crossed. For each one, discuss the questions at the bottom of the slide in
pairs or as a class.

Jenny really wants to be a hairdresser
when she grows up. She used to sit behind
Faye, and would sometimes play with her
hair in class.
Last week, her teacher moved her to sit
behind Amira. When Jenny started playing
with Amira’s hair, Amira got really angry
with her.
Jenny wasn’t trying to upset Amira, but
now Amira won’t speak to her and she
doesn’t know what to do.

He asked Rahul, but Rahul said that he
wanted to play basketball with another
group of children.
Kristof asked the other footballers to ask
Rahul instead. 10 different children asked
Rahul to play, and then Rahul shouted “Go
away!” at all of them.
Kristof was trying to organise a game of
football in the playground and needed
another player.

Norman, Jakub and Louise play a game
together online. They have headsets to
talk to each other at the same time too.
Recently, Jakub has started to say
horrible words while he is playing. Louise
told him that it’s unkind but he hasn’t
stopped doing it.
Louise feels uncomfortable playing with
Jakub now in case he says more horrible
things, but she doesn’t want to let Norman
down.

Now her aunt lives here, Gosha’s mum has
been taking her to visit her aunt every
weekend. Every time they go, Gosha’s aunt
asks Gosha to give her a kiss hello and
goodbye.
Gosha is used to kissing her family
goodbye, but she feels awkward with her
new aunt. Last week she pretended to be
ill so that she didn’t have to go.
Gosha’s aunt has just moved to the UK.
Before this, Gosha had never met her
aunt, but had spoke to her on the phone
sometimes.

Peter’s sister, Maggie, has a boyfriend
called Joe. Joe comes to Peter’s house a
few times a week and watches TV with
Maggie.
Last night, Peter’s parents were out and
Maggie and Joe was watching TV. Joe
started to hug Maggie and was touching
her knee.
Maggie didn’t say anything, but Peter could
tell she didn’t like it because her face
looked weird. Now he doesn’t know what to
do.

Knowing your boundaries
Final thoughts (2-3 mins)
Now it’s time to make sure you’re confident of what you’ve
learned today! You will see three statements, and for each one
move to the left of the room if you think it’s true, and to the
right if you think it is false.
It’s false!
It’s true!
If someone says no to you
doing something to them,
then you don’t have to listen.
Everyone’s boundaries are the
same, so the things that make me
uncomfortable are the same for all
my friends.
We always behave the same
way, no matter who the
person is we are with.
Challenge:
How will knowing these
things help you and
other people in the
future?
If you didn’t get them all right, don’t worry – just try to remember them from now
on!
