Starter: Is it okay if…?
Discuss (3-5 mins)
Take a look at these different actions. Using the
symbols on the right, show whether you think that this is
always okay, sometimes okay, or never okay.
Always
okay!
Sometimes
okay!
Never
okay!
Challenge:
Did everyone answer in the
same way? Why/why not?
A friend borrows your toy without asking.
A family member holds your hand.
A stranger asks you where you live.
A classmate touches your hair without
asking.
A family friend gives you money.

Why are we talking about this?
In 2022, it’s likely that you’ll be meeting
with more people and going to more
places.
But it can also mean that you might face a few
situations that make you feel uneasy, awkward
or angry.
Meeting and being around lots of people
can help you to learn new things, make
friends and have fun.
One reason for this could be because your (or
someone else’s) personal boundaries are
crossed. This is what you will be learning about
today.

By now, you’ve probably met a lot of different people in your life, such as…
What are boundaries?
Family
members
Classmates
Family
friends
People outside
of school
These are called your relationships.

©VotesforSchools2022
What are boundaries?
Every relationship that you have will be different, and
you will probably behave a little bit differently with
different people, depending on what kind of relationship
you have with them.
For example, you probably act differently at home with
your family to how you would act in school with your
teacher. This is normal!
The behaviour that you feel is okay to do (and to be
done to you) is called boundaries.
Everyone’s boundaries are different. For example,
some friends might feel okay with holding hands in the
playground, and others might not.
Your boundaries are also different for different
people. For example, it might be okay to tell your
friend where you live, but it wouldn’t be okay to tell
a stranger.

Who’s in your circle?
The best way to think about what your boundaries are
is to think about your different relationships.
Me
Who’s close to me? (2-3 mins)
On a whiteboard or piece of
paper, draw a small circle in the
middle and write your name in
it.
Draw a slightly bigger circle
around yourself. Label this
“People close to me.”
Draw a slightly bigger circle again
and label this “People I know
well.”
Lastly, draw a bigger circle again
and label this “Other people that
I know.”

Now you are going to see six different actions.
Each one has a number. For each one, your job
is to decide if you would be ok with this action
happening and, if so, who by. Write the number
for each action on the circles chart you just
drew.

What are your boundaries? (4-6 mins)
Now that you know your boundaries, it’s time to talk
about them with your classmates. In pairs or small
groups, discuss the two questions below.
If someone does something that crosses your
boundaries, you may feel uncomfortable,
upset or even angry.
Challenge:
Choose a spokesperson to
feedback your group’s answers to
the rest of the class.
This is why it’s important that you know how to
talk about your boundaries, and what you can
do if someone crosses them.
Did you all put the actions in the same
place? Why/why not?
How would you feel if someone from
outside your circle did one of these
actions?

Did it cross a boundary? (7-14 mins)
On the next few slides, you are going to see 5 different scenarios where someone’s
boundaries were crossed. For each one, discuss the questions at the bottom of the slide in
pairs or as a class.
Whose boundary was
crossed and how?
What could have been done
differently to stop the problem
from happening?
What would you do
now if you were
them?

Jenny really wants to be a hairdresser
when she grows up. She used to sit behind
Faye, and would sometimes play with her
hair in class.
Last week, her teacher moved her to sit
behind Amira. When Jenny started playing
with Amira’s hair, Amira got really angry
with her.
Jenny wasn’t trying to upset Amira, but
now Amira won’t speak to her and she
doesn’t know what to do.

Kristof asked the other footballers to ask

Norman, Jakub and Louise play a game
together online. They have headsets to
talk to each other at the same time too.
Recently, Jakub has started to say
horrible words while he is playing. Louise
told him that it’s unkind but he hasn’t
stopped doing it.
Louise feels uncomfortable playing with
Jakub now in case he says more horrible
things, but she doesn’t want to let Norman
down.

Now her aunt lives here, Gosha’s mum has
been taking her to visit her aunt every
weekend. Every time they go, Gosha’s aunt
asks Gosha to give her a kiss hello and
goodbye.
Gosha is used to kissing her family
goodbye, but she feels awkward with her
new aunt. Last week she pretended to be
ill so that she didn’t have to go.
Gosha’s aunt has just moved to the UK.
Before this, Gosha had never met her
aunt, but had spoke to her on the phone
sometimes.

Knowing your boundaries
Final thoughts (2-3 mins)
Now it’s time to make sure you’re confident of what you’ve
learned today! You will see three statements, and for each one
move to the left of the room if you think it’s true, and to the
right if you think it is false.
It’s false!
It’s true!
If someone says no to you
doing something to them,
then you don’t have to listen.
Everyone’s boundaries are the
same, so the things that make me
uncomfortable are the same for all
my friends.
We always behave the same
way, no matter who the
person is we are with.
Challenge:
How will knowing these
things help you and
other people in the
future?
If you didn’t get them all right, don’t worry – just try to remember them from now
on!

We will be sharing your thoughts on this topic with Childline, the NSPCC, Our Streets Now,
Everyone's Invited, and Victim Support.
Boundaries help us to stay
safe and comfortable in
lots of different situations.
There were some
situations in this lesson
that I wasn’t sure about,
so I would like to learn
more.
I didn’t realise that not
everyone’s boundaries
were the same, so this
shows we need to learn
more.
For most people,
boundaries are just
normal behaviour – we
don’t need to be taught
them!
There weren’t any
situations in this lesson
that I wasn’t sure about,
so I think I know enough.
Boundaries are pretty
simple: only do what you
or someone else is
comfortable with.

  • 3. ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2020/21 ©VotesforSchools2022 Starter: Is it okay if…? Discuss (3-5 mins) Take a look at these different actions. Using the symbols on the right, show whether you think that this is always okay, sometimes okay, or never okay. Always okay! Sometimes okay! Never okay! Challenge: Did everyone answer in the same way? Why/why not? A friend borrows your toy without asking. A family member holds your hand. A stranger asks you where you live. A classmate touches your hair without asking. A family friend gives you money.

  • 6. ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2020/21 ©VotesforSchools2022 Why are we talking about this? In 2022, it’s likely that you’ll be meeting with more people and going to more places. But it can also mean that you might face a few situations that make you feel uneasy, awkward or angry. Meeting and being around lots of people can help you to learn new things, make friends and have fun. One reason for this could be because your (or someone else’s) personal boundaries are crossed. This is what you will be learning about today.

  • 8. ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2020/21 ©VotesforSchools2022 By now, you’ve probably met a lot of different people in your life, such as… What are boundaries? Family members Classmates Family friends People outside of school These are called your relationships.
  • 9. ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2020/21 ©VotesforSchools2022 What are boundaries? Every relationship that you have will be different, and you will probably behave a little bit differently with different people, depending on what kind of relationship you have with them. For example, you probably act differently at home with your family to how you would act in school with your teacher. This is normal! The behaviour that you feel is okay to do (and to be done to you) is called boundaries. Everyone’s boundaries are different. For example, some friends might feel okay with holding hands in the playground, and others might not. Your boundaries are also different for different people. For example, it might be okay to tell your friend where you live, but it wouldn’t be okay to tell a stranger.

  • 11. ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2020/21 ©VotesforSchools2022 Who’s in your circle? The best way to think about what your boundaries are is to think about your different relationships. Me Who’s close to me? (2-3 mins) On a whiteboard or piece of paper, draw a small circle in the middle and write your name in it. Draw a slightly bigger circle around yourself. Label this “People close to me.” Draw a slightly bigger circle again and label this “People I know well.” Lastly, draw a bigger circle again and label this “Other people that I know.”
  • 12. ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2020/21 ©VotesforSchools2022 Who’s in your circle? Who’s in your circle? (3-5 mins) Now that you’ve got your chart, can you add at least three people into each circle? Family members Other friends Your teachers Family friends Classmates Me Other people you’ve met
  • 13. ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2020/21 ©VotesforSchools2022 Who’s in your circle? Me Now that you’ve thought about your relationships, you are going to think about your boundaries. Give me a hug without asking 1 1 2 4 5 6 Sleep over at my house 2 Pick me up and carry me 3 Borrow my things without asking 4 Call me unkind names 5 Share my food with me 6 3 Confused? Click to see what your sheet might look like by the end of this activity! Click to try it yourself! Me What are your boundaries? (4-6 mins) Now you are going to see six different actions. Each one has a number. For each one, your job is to decide if you would be ok with this action happening and, if so, who by. Write the number for each action on the circles chart you just drew.
  • 14. ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2020/21 ©VotesforSchools2022 Who’s in your circle? What are your boundaries? (4-6 mins) Now that you know your boundaries, it’s time to talk about them with your classmates. In pairs or small groups, discuss the two questions below. If someone does something that crosses your boundaries, you may feel uncomfortable, upset or even angry. Challenge: Choose a spokesperson to feedback your group’s answers to the rest of the class. This is why it’s important that you know how to talk about your boundaries, and what you can do if someone crosses them. Did you all put the actions in the same place? Why/why not? How would you feel if someone from outside your circle did one of these actions?

  • 16. ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2020/21 ©VotesforSchools2022 Did it cross a boundary? Did it cross a boundary? (7-14 mins) On the next few slides, you are going to see 5 different scenarios where someone’s boundaries were crossed. For each one, discuss the questions at the bottom of the slide in pairs or as a class. Whose boundary was crossed and how? What could have been done differently to stop the problem from happening? What would you do now if you were them?
  • 17. ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2020/21 ©VotesforSchools2022 Did it cross a boundary? Jenny really wants to be a hairdresser when she grows up. She used to sit behind Faye, and would sometimes play with her hair in class. Last week, her teacher moved her to sit behind Amira. When Jenny started playing with Amira’s hair, Amira got really angry with her. Jenny wasn’t trying to upset Amira, but now Amira won’t speak to her and she doesn’t know what to do. Whose boundary was crossed and how? What could have been done differently to stop the problem from happening? What would you do now if you were them?
  • 18. ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2020/21 ©VotesforSchools2022 Did it cross a boundary? He asked Rahul, but Rahul said that he wanted to play basketball with another group of children. Kristof asked the other footballers to ask Rahul instead. 10 different children asked Rahul to play, and then Rahul shouted “Go away!” at all of them. Kristof was trying to organise a game of football in the playground and needed another player. Whose boundary was crossed and how? What could have been done differently to stop the problem from happening? What would you do now if you were them?
  • 19. ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2020/21 ©VotesforSchools2022 Did it cross a boundary? Norman, Jakub and Louise play a game together online. They have headsets to talk to each other at the same time too. Recently, Jakub has started to say horrible words while he is playing. Louise told him that it’s unkind but he hasn’t stopped doing it. Louise feels uncomfortable playing with Jakub now in case he says more horrible things, but she doesn’t want to let Norman down. Whose boundary was crossed and how? What could have been done differently to stop the problem from happening? What would you do now if you were them?
  • 20. ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2020/21 ©VotesforSchools2022 Did it cross a boundary? Now her aunt lives here, Gosha’s mum has been taking her to visit her aunt every weekend. Every time they go, Gosha’s aunt asks Gosha to give her a kiss hello and goodbye. Gosha is used to kissing her family goodbye, but she feels awkward with her new aunt. Last week she pretended to be ill so that she didn’t have to go. Gosha’s aunt has just moved to the UK. Before this, Gosha had never met her aunt, but had spoke to her on the phone sometimes. Whose boundary was crossed and how? What could have been done differently to stop the problem from happening? What would you do now if you were them?
  • 21. ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2020/21 ©VotesforSchools2022 Did it cross a boundary? Peter’s sister, Maggie, has a boyfriend called Joe. Joe comes to Peter’s house a few times a week and watches TV with Maggie. Last night, Peter’s parents were out and Maggie and Joe was watching TV. Joe started to hug Maggie and was touching her knee. Maggie didn’t say anything, but Peter could tell she didn’t like it because her face looked weird. Now he doesn’t know what to do. Whose boundary was crossed and how? What could have been done differently to stop the problem from happening? What would you do now if you were them?

  • 23. ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2020/21 ©VotesforSchools2022 Knowing your boundaries Final thoughts (2-3 mins) Now it’s time to make sure you’re confident of what you’ve learned today! You will see three statements, and for each one move to the left of the room if you think it’s true, and to the right if you think it is false. It’s false! It’s true! If someone says no to you doing something to them, then you don’t have to listen. Everyone’s boundaries are the same, so the things that make me uncomfortable are the same for all my friends. We always behave the same way, no matter who the person is we are with. Challenge: How will knowing these things help you and other people in the future? If you didn’t get them all right, don’t worry – just try to remember them from now on!

  • 25. ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2022 ©VotesforSchools2022 Vote! We will be sharing your thoughts on this topic with Childline, the NSPCC, Our Streets Now, Everyone's Invited, and Victim Support. Boundaries help us to stay safe and comfortable in lots of different situations. There were some situations in this lesson that I wasn’t sure about, so I would like to learn more. I didn’t realise that not everyone’s boundaries were the same, so this shows we need to learn more. For most people, boundaries are just normal behaviour – we don’t need to be taught them! There weren’t any situations in this lesson that I wasn’t sure about, so I think I know enough. Boundaries are pretty simple: only do what you or someone else is comfortable with. ©VotesforSchools2022
