4. What is GRIS?
( Genetic Resources Information System (GRIS
is as a modeling tool to document, manage, visualize
and disseminate data on in-Situ and ex-Situ plant
genetic resources including GIS components and
indigenous knowledge
• GRIS captures information and I/K
about:
– Taxonomy
– Site Information
– Geographical Surveys
– Collected Samples
– Germplasm Management
– Exchange Germplasm Data
5. How does GRIS work?
• In addition GRIS helps with:
– Monitoring number of seeds /accession
– Monitoring seed viability
– Estimating regeneration date
7. How does GRIS work?
Now the researchers
are able to
use GRIS in two
different ways
GRIS

14. How does GRIS work?
• e-Mode: Where the researchers can use the
PDA to enter the information.
GRIS
• When the researchers go back to the lab, they
should connect the PDA with GRIS, and then
the GRIS would do the rest.
e-Mode
• GRIS would generate all the information
suitable to the data entered by PDA.
• GRIS also allows the user to verify all the
PDA contents before update the Database.
• In e-Mode you can enter all “normal mode”
information with just one step..

19. How does GRIS work?
• Most of GRIS sections make use of GIS
(Geographical Information Systems) for
Distribution maps for collection surveys,
surveyed sites, and collected samples.
20. How does GRIS work?
• the user can print reports and search and
save the search results in all sections.
22. What are the Tools needed to use GRIS?
• PDA Palm unit for digital survey forms: In the latest
version of GRIS you can use the e-survey to add
Taxonomy, Site, Geographical Surveys and Collected
Samples Information Automatically by PDA.
• PDA Palm unit for stock control: GRIS can check the
stock control and adjust it using the new technologies
installed by PDA.
• GPS for automatic detection of locations coordinates.
• barcode printer: Printing barcode labels.
• barcode reader: Optical Identification, Automatic Data
Entry/Retrieval.
• Digital Camera to capture high resolution digital images.
• mpeg video cam, this version of GRIS support mpeg
video format .
• Mp3 audio recorder can also be used because this
version support mp3 files

31. What is the design manager?
• This section provides an important service
to the GRIS by allowing the user to :
1. Design additional forms for
characterization and evaluation.
2. Enter information to these new forms.
3. Searching and filtering.
4. Printing information.
• And so, anyone can add new values to this
program (forms, reports and queries).
35. What's new in GRIS ?
• New Features added to GRIS v3.1:
– e-Survey.
– Send/Receive Accessions' Database to
PDA Unit, and stock control.
– Publish Passport Database.
– Upload Passport Database to GRIS
website.
– Backup and restore system.
– Support MP3 Audio (mp3) format and
MPEG Video format (mpg).
37. What about future?
• It is too important for GRIS future to keep using the newest programming
technologies and tools which offer new services to the users:
– Multiple platform (Windows, Linux, etc)
– Multi-user database using client/server architecture.
– Multi-lingual using Dynamic Language Definition technology (DLD).
– Artificial Intelligence and DSS technologies are used to develop a simulation
model for population growth of a species in a particular geographical area.
– Open Source technology are used in order to rationalize the costs and sustain
future GRIS developments by National Partners.
– XML data exchange.
– Windows SharePoint Services tools used for collaboration with partners.
• Now we are going to watch a video scene explaining this new technology.
