Please note that there are 2 parts to the project!
Keep in mind that 10 pts will be taken off for each day part one or two of the project is late.
Part One: Science Investigation
Due Date: Friday December 3 rd This is a test grade (100 pts!)
Choose a science related topic. Only one student in each class may choose a particular
topic. Please okay these with me first. You will be expected to create an informational tri-fold
brochure/pamphlet on the topic. It should include at least 3 pictures and at least 4 paragraphs of
text. This may be handmade or created on the computer and printed out or a combination of the
two. Text must be IN YOUR OWN WORDS. On the back, you must include at least 3 sources that
you used (google, ask.com, and Wikipedia are not allowed as sources). You will also be expected to
interview an expert on your topic. You may have to do some work to find this person and you
should contact them by phone, email, or in person as soon as possible. The interview must be typed
out and include your questions and the expert’s responses. You should ask at least 10 questions.
Part One Rubric:
Tri-fold Brochure/Pamphlet: 50 pts

>At least 3 sources (5 pts each)
Interview with an expert: 50 pts

Part Two: School/Community Service Project
Due Date: Friday April 15 th This is a test grade (100 pts!)
Complete 10 hours of service to your school or community. You will be expected to keep a
journal that details what kinds of things you did and explain how your experiences relate to science.
You must have a supervisor/participating adult sign off on your completed hours. He/She should
include a contact number also. Some volunteer ideas: volunteer work at a hospital, research lab,
vet’s office, day care, nursing home, park, school, or pet rescue. Many of these will require you to
attend a volunteer training. Contacting them sooner, rather than later is necessary.
Part Two Rubric:
10 hours completed and signed off on by supervisor/participating adult: 50 pts
>Each hour completed (5 pts per hour)
Detailed journal pages for each day volunteering: 50 pts
>Each entry includes the date, times, and where the service is taking place (10 pts)
>Each entry includes a detailed description of what was done AND how it relates to science
(40 pts)
