  3. 3. The Beginning <ul><li>The city-state came onto existence in 1929. It was built to house the Pope. </li></ul><ul><li>The actual church was built in the 16 th and 17 th century. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Population <ul><li>The population of Vatican City is only about 900 people. </li></ul><ul><li>Most of the population is staff to the Pope. </li></ul><ul><li>Hungry Horse, MT is about the same size </li></ul>
  5. 5. The Pope <ul><li>Pope means Father in Latin. </li></ul><ul><li>Our Pope is the first ever Pope to be German. </li></ul><ul><li>He is also 78 years old. </li></ul><ul><li>Born Feb 7, 1924 </li></ul>
  6. 6. Why was it built? <ul><li>At first, Vatican City was built as a shrine for St. Peter. It was built on top of him. </li></ul><ul><li>It was later made into a church. </li></ul>
  7. 7. The Pope <ul><li>The Pope is the center of Catholicism, he is the highest man in the religion. </li></ul><ul><li>Many people think that he is the person that is the closest to God. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Religion in the city <ul><li>Because Vatican City was made for the Pope, the religion is mostly Catholic but there are many other religions practiced there as well. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Christians in the World <ul><li>There is 2.1 billion Christians in the world; half of that population is Catholics. </li></ul><ul><li>THAT’S A WHOLE LOT OF CHRISTIANS!!!!! </li></ul>
