Performance Appraisal

Performance appraisal is the process of identifying, evaluating, and developing the work
performance of employee in the organization, so that the organizational goals and objectives are
more effectively achieved, while at the same time benefiting employee in terms of recognition,
receiving feedback, catering for work and offering career guidance.

Characteristics of Performance Appraisal

Performance appraisal is a systematic process of evaluation of individual job performance, and
seeks to provide feedback, recognize contributions made, and forms the basis of HR decisions. It
is the identification, measurement, and management of human performance in organizations.

Some of the characteristics of performance appraisal are

   1. Performance appraisal provides reassurance to employee that they are contributing and
       doing the right things.
   2. Performance appraisal reveals the adequacy of performance in terms of quantity, quality,
       speed, timeliness, etc.
   3. Performance appraisal reveals the adequacy of performance in terms of quantity, speed,
       timeliness, etc.
   4. Performance appraisal provides means for recognition of the importance and value of
       performance of employee.
   5. Performance appraisal provides opportunity for self-development of employees.
   6. Performance appraisal provides for administrative decisions and reward management of
       employee.
   7. Performance appraisal is a critical tool for training and development of employees.
   8. Performance appraisal is a foundation of career and succession planning.
   9. Performance appraisal is a foundation of career and succession planning.
   10. Performance appraisal is a valuable source of talent management.
