2. Crisis in the Cold War
- The Cuban Missile Crisis took place in October of 1962.
- This crisis happened because of Soviet Nuclear Missiles
that were sent to Cuba.
3. 13 Days
- The crisis was a 13 Day standoff between the U.S. and the Soviet Union over
missiles in Cuba.
- Cuba is only 90 miles from the U.S. coast.
4. Panic
- A U2 spy plane took pictures of missile sites in Cuba.
- President Kennedy told Americans about the missiles and
his plan to stop the Soviets from sending more by
blockading Cuba.
- Most Americans feared this would lead to a nuclear war.
5. Agreement
- The U.S. reached an agreement with the Soviet Union to avoid a war.
- The Soviets agreed to remove the missiles.
- The U.S. agreed not to invade Cuba. (Also, to secretly remove our missiles
from Turkey)
- Many believe this was the closest the world has been to nuclear war.
