Spiritual Reality - Journey Within
(Compiled by: Jitendra Gajjar)
Cosmic Energy
The Cosmic Energy exists everywhere in the Cosmos.
It is the Bond between the galaxies, the planets, humans and molecules.
It is the 'space' between each and everything.
It is the bond, which keeps the whole cosmos in order.
Cosmic Energy is the 'Life Force'.
This Cosmic Energy is essential to maintain the order of our life and to expand
our Consciousness.
Cosmic Energy is the base for all our actions and functions.
We receive some amount of Cosmic Energy in deep Sleep and in total Silence.
We are using this energy for our day-to-day activities of our Mind like seeing,
speaking, hearing, thinking and all actions of our Body.
This limited energy gained through sleep is not sufficient for these activities.
That is why we feel exhausted, tired and tensed. This leads to mental and
physical stress and all kinds of illnesses.
The only way to overcome this is to get more and more Cosmic Energy.
Cosmic Energy is essential to:
Maintain the order of our life
To lead a healthy and happy life
To totally involve in all situations we are in
To obtain Knowledge
And finally
For expansion of our Consciousness.
Abundant Cosmic Energy is obtained, only through Meditation.
Meditation
Meditation is the journey of our consciousness towards the Self.
Sleep is unconscious Meditation
Meditation is conscious sleep.
We receive some amount of Cosmic Energy in sleep and in deep silence.
We receive abundant Cosmic Energy in Meditation.
Meditation is the journey of our consciousness from:
Body to Mind,
Mind to Intellect,
Intellect to Self
And beyond.
To do Meditation, the first thing is Posture.
We may sit in any posture. Posture must be comfortable and stable.
We may sit either on the floor or on a chair.
Cross your legs, clasp the fingers
Close your eyes gently
Relax relax …
Then,
Observe your normal Breath
Do not chant any Mantra, do not think of any God
Just witness the Breath
If any thoughts come,
Do not go behind the thoughts, do not negate the thoughts
Just come back and observe the Breath
Witness the Breath
Be the Breath
Just Be.
This is the WAY. This is the Meditation Technique.
Then one reaches …
No Thought and No Breath state.
This is the Meditative State.
By more and more Meditation, we receive abundant Cosmic Energy.
With this Meditation Technique,
Our Energy body gets cleansed
Third Eye get activated, and further perfected
Astral Travel happens
We understand Life After Life
And many more
Energy Body
Energy Body is the structure for the Consciousness.
Energy Body forms with more than 72000 Nadis or Energy tubes which run all
across the Body.
All these Energy Tubes starts from the head region.
This region is called ‘Bramha Randhra’.
These Nadis spread throughout the body like roots of a plant.
Energy Body is the main base for the design of our life.
Energy Body is the main source for all our actions and even for our existence.
Our Energy Body receives Cosmic Energy during sleep and Meditation.
We are using this Energy for our body and mind activities like seeing, speaking,
hearing and physical movements and even for digestion.
All these functions are totally based on the incoming Cosmic Energy.
The inflow of Cosmic Energy is purely based on our thoughts.
When we have thoughts, the inflow of Cosmic Energy is obstructed.
In other words,
Our thoughts are the stumbling blocks for the inflow of Cosmic Energy.
When the inflow of Cosmic Energy is less, the Energy in the Energy Tubes
depletes. This depletion causes Etheric Patches in the Energy Body. This Etheric
Patches gradually leads to diseases in the physical body.
In other words,
Root cause of all diseases is the lack of Energy in the Energy Body.
In Meditation, we get abundant Cosmic Energy. It flows heavily through all our
Energy Tubes of Energy Body. Cosmic Energy cleanses all Etheric Patches due to
its heavy flow.
When Etheric Patches are cleansed, we come out of all our illness.
When Energy starts flowing heavily through Bramha Randhra, we ‘feel’ heaviness
in the head region or heaviness in the whole body.
When Energy is cleansing the Energy Tubes, we may get itching sensation or
pain in that region.
Sometimes we may experience pain in various places in the physical body.
For all these pains we need not take any medicines.
All these pains will vanish by increasing Meditation.
By intake of more and more Cosmic Energy by more and more Meditation, we
come out of all physical and mental illness.
Pyramid Power
Pyramid is the most stable structure, which receives the highest Cosmic Energy
in this Planet Earth.
Pyramid forms at an angle 52 degrees 51 minutes and because of this Angle, it
receives the highest Cosmic Energy.
Pyramid can be constructed with any material.
Materials make no difference in the receiving of the Cosmic Energy.
Pyramid has to be aligned to perfect cardinal directions- north, south, east and
west.
Cosmic Energy gets accumulated at 1/3rd height from the base of the Pyramid.
This place is known as King's Chamber.
Cosmic Energy will be the maximum in the King's Chamber and it spreads
throughout the Pyramid.
A crystal fixed at the apex of the Pyramid, multiplies and distributes the Cosmic
Energy throughout the Pyramid.
The No Thought State or “Nirmala Sthithi” is attained three times faster if one
meditates inside the Pyramid.
Pyramid can be used for communication with higher frequencies.
Meditation in the Pyramid helps in Healing and for all Meditation Experiences.
Third Eye
The Third Eye is a very powerful tool of the soul to 'see', to 'feel' and to 'hear'
the higher frequency realities.
These three functions of the soul are known as Third Eye.
When the Cosmic Energy flows heavily, the Third Eye gets activated.
At the time of activation of the Third Eye, we feel an itching sensation or pulling
sensation at the fore head region.
We start 'seeing' glimpses of various colors rotating around us. We 'see' pitch-
dark color.
We 'hear' murmuring sounds, sound of walking.
Here, we 'feel' we are traveling in a pitch dark Tunnel, we 'feel' as if we are
falling in a dark tunnel, we feel we are moving upwards in a dark tunnel towards
a brilliant light, we 'feel' we are traveling towards bright light.
Third Eye Perfection:
When the Etheric Body gets sufficient Cosmic Energy by more and more
Meditation, our Third Eye gets perfected.
Here, we perceive crystal clear visions of this plane and other planes.
In Third Eye perfection,
we 'see' so many things more crystal clear than the physical visions.
We 'see' other frequency realities.
We ''see' the things which are not present near the five senses.
We 'feel' so many things, which we cannot express with the words.
We 'hear' inner voices, sounds or sounds of Instruments from other frequencies.
We 'see' Masters who are not there physically with us.
We 'see' Masters in a physical form, as we know them.
After more Meditation, we start 'seeing' the Master like a 'Bright Light”.
Even by 'seeing' the Bright Light, we 'feel' the identity of the Master.
We can 'hear' the messages from the Masters.
We 'feel' moving in a tunnel and finally merging with the light.
Third Eye Experiences makes us to know that:
We can get answers for all our problems through
Messages from the Masters
or by 'seeing' other frequency realities or as a 'feeling'.
By this:
Our actions will change.
Our beliefs will change.
Our Understanding will change.
After this Third Eye experience, we find changes in our perception of this physical
plane.
Astral Travel
Astral Body is a tool of the Self to perceive other frequency realities.
Astral Body is one more form of our Consciousness like our physical body.
In normal condition our Consciousness is spread throughout the physical body.
When we receive sufficient amount of Energy and when we 'feel' to perceive the
other frequency realities, the consciousness moves in the form of Astral Body.
We perceive the Astral Body experiences unconsciously in Sleep, which we call as
DREAMS.
One can perceive Astral Body experiences consciously in Meditation.
Astral body travels beyond space and time.
After Conscious Astral Experiences, we start perceiving new dimensions.
In Meditation, after receiving abundant Cosmic Energy the Consciousness that is
spread everywhere in the body, starts moving towards a point.
While Consciousness is moving, we experience
jerks in the physical body,
rotation in the physical body.
Movements may be experienced in different parts of the body or sometimes, one
may experience as if the whole body is rotating.
We feel as if our body is floating.
We don't 'feel' the hands and legs.
We 'feel' lightness of the body like feather.
These are known as ASTRAL MOVEMENTS.
By doing more and more Meditation, we get more and more Cosmic Energy.
The Consciousness forming like an Astral Body, starts rotating very fast which
causes heavy movements in physical body.
After the movements, the Astral body starts coming out of the physical body
with a link called Silver Chord. Silver Chord is nothing but a high vibrant
consciousness which transfers the messages to physical body to astral body and
vice versa.
With this, we do ASTRAL TRAVEL.
Astral Travel is a travel of our Consciousness to known and unknown
frequencies.
By doing Astral Travel we get highest knowledge and understanding of the SELF.
In Astral Travel, our Astral Body can pass through all physical materials, all
elements like earth, water, fire, wind and ether. Astral Body can go to all other
frequency dimensions without any limitations.
After coming out of the body, Meditator 'sees' his own physical body. By this he
gets great understanding. He understands that he is not only the body, but he
stays in the body. This is a great understanding.
Everyone should experience Astral Travel.
By traveling a lot
our limitedness will vanish and
we will understand that we are unlimited
By this experience only,
We understand that we are THE CONSCIOUSNESS.
We understand that we are UNLIMITED.
We understand the NEW DIMENSIONS OF LIFE.
Nirvana
With more and more Meditation, we will receive more Cosmic Energy.
Cosmic Energy improves our involvement in what we are in.
By more and more total involvement with Body-Mind-Self,
We Understand IN-TOTAL about the situations.
This Understanding is nothing but KNOWLEDGE.
Common man will get only experience, but fails to perceive the
knowledge in that situation. It is because he experiences the situation with
physical understanding alone.
But a Master will understand the situation in TOTAL. It is because he Knows that
he is not just the Body, but he knows that he stays in the Body. He understands
that the situations are for his Knowledge.
After experiencing all meditational experiences, and implementing it in our
practical life, we will get 'great understanding'.
This Understanding opens up several thousands of doors which gives new
dimension of perceptions in our life.
Our understanding, our Perception and our Knowledge expands a lot.
This leads to the expansion of our Consciousness.
This is nothing but having the WISDOM.
We experience this state of Wisdom in meditation,
as a THOUSAND PETALLED GOLDEN LOTUS.
Each and every petal is a new dimension of understanding.
By perceiving more and more dimensions,
we understand more and more knowledge of other existences.
With this Understanding, we come to know that:
There is No Death and we are Eternal Beings.
We understand “what is Birth?” and “what is Death?”
Life after Life - Birth and Death
We are Consciousness
We come to this Earth plane as a speck of Cosmic Consciousness.
While coming from the source, we come with Etheric Body as a structure for the
Self.
We come to this Earth plane to have unique experiences.
For our experiences, we select the womb,
We select the parents, environment and situations.
The whole design of life is known to the Self.
Birth
After selecting the mother, speck of consciousness enters the mother’s womb.
After Consciousness enters into the mother’s womb, fetus gets life.
The physical body takes the shape according to the Cosmic Energy in the Etheric
Body and according to the Cause.
Consciousness will be traveling frequently to the source till it takes first breath.
After coming out from the mother’s womb, it takes its first external breath.
This is known as Birth.
Life
From day one to age of seven. we will have awareness of the source.
The mind starts taking its shape from age seven and it completely forms by age
fourteen.
Intellect starts its activation from the age fourteen and fully developed by the
age twenty-one.
From the age twenty-one to age of twenty-eight, one experiences the
combination of body, mind and intellect.
From the age of twenty eight, life depends on Self Knowledge.
If one does not have awareness of the Self, his Consciousness lies in between
body and mind.
Because of this, whole misery starts.
He cannot understand the situations.
Things will become more critical for him.
He moulds into concealed rigidness.
Rigidness blocks the Cosmic flow.
Due to this he suffers with physical illness, stress and tensions.
He passes his days without awareness.
He cannot understand the very purpose of his life.
Death and Beyond
If one passes his life without awareness and without Understanding,
Then,
He passes from childhood days to youth, then to old age and finally passes away
from this Earth plane without completion of his purpose of coming to this Earth
plane.
It is what we call Death.
Even after death, layer of rigid mind with wrong understanding does not allow
the Consciousness to reach the Source.
Because of the wrong understanding,
he creates his own Hell And Heaven and stays as a lower Astral World being.
If one starts one’s life being with the Self,
he will be always blissful in all given situations.
Even after Death, he won’t be in the lower frequencies.
He will go back to the Source.
Enlightenment
By obtaining The Higher Knowledge through Third Eye, Astral Travel, Knowledge
of Birth and Death one will have perfect understanding of Body, Mind, Intellect,
Self and Life force.
By living all the time with this understanding, one starts getting much more
higher understanding about the Existence of whole Creation.
With this understanding one will become a MIRACULOUS CREATOR.
This is what
E N L I G H T E N M E N T.
He understands that:
Consciousness is the combination of Energy and Knowledge.
Consciousness comes to this plane to gain more Energy and Knowledge and to
Create.
Then,
Whatever HE speaks, it manifests!
Whatever HE thinks, it manifests!
Whatever HE does, it becomes a CREATION!
1. Introduction to what human beings are comprised of
In this article we explain the composition of the human body and its various subtle
bodies. Modern science has gone in some depth into understanding the physical
body. However its understanding of the other aspects of human existence is still
very limited. For example the understanding of the human psyche and intellect is
still more or less limited to their physical aspects. However spiritual science has
studied the entire human existence in great detail.
2. What are human beings comprised of as per spiritual
science?
A living person is made up of the following bodies.
1. The Physical Body
2. The Vital Energy Body (Praan-deha)
3. The Mental Body (Mano-deha)
4. The Intellect Body or Causal body (Kaarana-deha)
5. The Subtle Ego or Supracausal body (Mahaakaarana-deha)
6. The Soul or the God Principle in each of us (Aatma
In the subsequent sections we will explain these various bodies in more detail.
3. The Physical Body
This is the body that is best known to modern science. It comprises of the skeletal
framework, muscles, tissues, organs, blood, 5 sense organs, etc.
4. The Vital Energy Body
This is the body also known as the Praandeha. This body provides the vital, life
sustaining energy for all the functions of the physical as well as the mental body.
There are five types of vital energies or praana:
 Praana: Energy for the activity of inhalation.
 Udaana: Energy for the activity of exhalation and speech.
 Samaana: Energy for the activity of the stomach and intestines.
 Vyaana: Energy for voluntary and involuntary movements of the body.
 Apaana: Energy for urination, excretion, ejaculation, childbirth, etc.
At the time of death the vital energy is released back into the Universe and also
helps in propelling the subtle body in its onward journey.
5. The Mental Body or the Mind
The Mental Body (Manodeha) or the Mind is the seat of our feelings, emotions and
desires. It carries in it countless number of impressions from this life and previous
lives. It is made up of three parts:
 The conscious mind: It is that part of our thoughts and feelings that we are
aware of.
 The sub-conscious mind: It contains all the impressions required to
complete our destiny (praarabdha) in our current lifetime. Thoughts from the
sub-conscious mind sometimes emerge into the conscious mind from time to
time either in response to some external stimulus or at time even without it. For
example during the course of one’s day one gets a random and unrelated
thought about some vague incident in one’s childhood.
 The unconscious mind: This is the aspect of our mind that we are
completely unaware of. This contains all the impressions that are associated
with our accumulated account.
The sub-conscious mind and unconscious mind together are known as the Chitta.
Sometimes we also refer to an aspect of the Mental Body as the Desires Body
or Vaasanaadeha. This is the aspect of the mind that contains all the impressions
of desires.
Please refer to the article on ‘Why we do the things we do’ as well as the e-
tutorial of the same name to understand the functional structure of the mind.
The physical organ associated with the Mental Body is the brain.
6. The Intellect
The Causal Body (Kaaranadeha) or the Intellect Body is the body which deals with
the decision making process and reasoning ability.
The physical organ associated with the Intellect Body is the brain.
7. The Subtle Ego
The Subtle Ego or the Supracausal Body (Mahaakaaranadeha) is the final vestige
of the nescience and is the feeling that we are separate from God.
8. The Soul
The Soul is the God principle within us and is our true nature. It is the main
component of the subtle body which is a fraction of the Supreme God Principle
with the qualities of Absolute Truth (Sat), Absolute Consciousness (Chit) and Bliss
(Aanand). The Soul is unaffected by the ups and downs in life and is in a perpetual
state of Bliss. It looks at the ups and downs of life in Maya or the Great Illusion
with an observer stance. The Soul is beyond the 3 subtle basic components;
however the rest of our consciousness like the Physical Body and the Mental Body
is made up of it.
9. The Subtle Body
The Subtle Body is defined as that part of our being or consciousness that leaves
our Physical Body at the time of physical death. It comprises of the Mental Body,
the Causal Body or Intellect, the Supracausal Body or Subtle Ego and the Soul.
What is left behind at the time of physical death is our Physical Body. The Vital
Energy is released back into the Universe.
The following are some other aspects of the subtle body
 Subtle sense organs: By subtle sense organs we mean the subtle aspect of
our 5 sense organs by which we are able to perceive the subtle realm. For
example we are able to perceive a subtle fragrance such as jasmine without
their being any stimulus to cause it. Also the fragrance may only be experienced
by one person and not by the others in the same room. This is explained in
more detail. Also refer to our article on – What is sixth sense?
 Subtle motor organs: By subtle motor organs we mean the subtle aspect of
our physical motor organs such as our arms, tongue, etc. All activity is initiated
first in subtle motor organs and then executed in the physical dimension by
one’s gross motor organs.
10. Nescience
All the other aspects of our being other than the Soul are part of Maya or
the Great Illusion. It is called Nescience or Avidyaa which when literally translated
means absence of knowledge. The word Nescience or Avidyaa stems from the fact
that we identify ourselves with our physical body, mind and intellect and not with
our true nature which is the Soul or the God principle within us.
Nescience is the root cause of unhappiness. Man gets attached to money, his own
house, family, city, country, etc. The greater the attachment to any individual or
object, greater is the likelihood of unhappiness arising from attachment. Even an
ideal social worker or a Saint may become attached to the society or His devotees
respectively. The greatest attachment that each one has is for himself; that is his
own mind and body. Even a slight discomfort or illness can make one unhappy;
hence everyone should gradually become detached about oneself and accept pain
and illness in one’s stride. This is of course with the inherent understanding that
happiness and unhappiness in life is experienced primarily due to our destiny. Also
that only by identifying with the Soul can we experience perpetual Bliss.
The Soul and Nescience together constitute the embodied soul. Nescience for a
living person has twenty components in all - the Physical Body, five subtle sense
organs, the five subtle motor organs, the five vital energies, the conscious mind,
the Chitta, the Intellect and the ego. Since the functions of the components of the
subtle body go on continuously, the attention of the embodied soul is drawn to
them instead of the soul, that is away from spiritual knowledge to Nescience.
1. Introduction to the purpose of life
Every now and again, we hear the clichéd question, ‘What is the meaning of life?’
or ‘What is the purpose of life?’ or ‘Why are we born?’. In most cases, we have our
own agenda on what our purpose in life is. However from a spiritual perspective,
there are two generic reasons why we are born. These reasons define the purpose
of our lives at the most basic level. They are:
 To complete the give-and-take account we have with various people.
 To make spiritual progress with the final aim of merging into God and
therefore getting out of the cycle of birth and death.
2. Completing our give-and-take account
Over many lifetimes, we accumulate many give-and-take accounts that are a
direct result of our deeds and actions. The accounts may be positive or negative
depending on the positive or negative nature of our actions. As a rule of thumb, in
the current era approximately 65% of our lives are destined (not within our
control) and 35% of our lives are governed by our own freewill. All major events in
our life are by and large destined. These events include our birth, the family we
are born into, the person (or persons) we marry, the children we have, serious
illnesses and the time of our death. The happiness and pain that we give and
receive from loved ones and acquaintances are by and large simply a case of prior
give-and-take accounts directing the way relationships unravel and play out.
However even our destiny in the current lifetime is just a fraction of the
accumulated give-and take account that we amass over many lifetimes.
In our lifetime, while we do complete our give-and-take account and destiny
earmarked for this particular lifetime of ours, we also end up creating more
accounts by using our willful action. This in turn finally adds up to our overall give-
and-take account known as the accumulated account. As a result, we have to be
born again to settle further give-and-take accounts and are stuck in the cycle of
birth and death.
Refer to the article on, 'Liberation from the cycle of birth and death' as it explains
how we get stuck in the cycle of birth and death.
3. Making spiritual progress
The ultimate in spiritual development in any Spiritual path is merging with God.
‘Merging with God’ means experiencing God within us and all around us and not
identifying with our five senses, mind and intellect. This happens at the
100% spiritual level. Most people in today’s world are at the 20-25% spiritual level
and are disinclined to any spiritual practice for spiritual development. They also
heavily identify with their 5 senses, mind and intellect. This is reflected in our lives
when we focus mainly on our looks or are arrogant about our intelligence or
success.
By spiritual practice when we grow to the spiritual level of 60% (samashti) or 70%
(vyashti), we are liberated from the cycle of birth and death. After this spiritual
level, we can settle whatever remaining give-and-take accounts we have from the
higher subtle realms of Mahaaloka and above. Sometimes however, people above
the 60% (samashti) or 70% (vyashti) spiritual level may choose to be born on
Earth to guide humanity in Spirituality.
Spiritual development is only possible through spiritual practice which conforms to
the six basic principles of spiritual practice. Spiritual paths that do not conform to
the six basic principles of spiritual practice lead to stagnation in an individual’s
spiritual development.
Refer to the article on The importance of the earth plane in being able to do
spiritual practice compared to other spiritual realms such as heaven and hell.
4. What does this mean in terms of our life goals?
Most of us have our own life goals. They may include becoming a doctor, being rich
and famous or representing one’s country in a certain field. Whatever the goal is
for the vast majority of us, more often than not, it is predominantly a worldly one.
Our entire education system is set up to help us pursue these worldly goals. As
parents too, we instill the same worldly purpose in our children by encouraging
them to study and enter professions that give them more benefits monetarily as
compared with one’s own profession.
One may ask, “How does having these worldly goals reconcile with the spiritual
purpose of life and the reason for our birth on Earth?”
The answer is quite simple. We strive for worldly goals primarily to achieve
satisfaction and happiness. The pursuit of the elusive ‘superlative and lasting
happiness’ is intrinsically what drives all our actions. However even after we
accomplish our worldly goals, the resultant happiness and satisfaction is short
lived, we then search for the next dream to chase.
‘Superlative and lasting happiness’ can only be attained through spiritual practice
which conforms to the six basic principles of spiritual practice. The highest form of
happiness which is Bliss is an aspect of God. When we merge into Him we too
experience perpetual Bliss.
This does not mean that we have to give up what we are doing and just focus on
spiritual practice. What it does mean is that only by introducing spiritual practice in
conjunction with worldly life are we likely to experience superlative and lasting
happiness. The benefits of spiritual practice have been discussed in detail in our
section on ‘Spiritual research for lasting happiness’.
In short, the more our life goals are in line with the intent of spiritual
development, the more rich our lives become and the less pain we experience
from life. The following is an example of how our perspective in life changes as we
develop and mature spiritually.
5. What is wrong with being born again and again?
Sometimes people think, “What is wrong in being born again and again?”
As we go deeper into Kaliyuga (the Era of Strife), the current era of the Universe,
life will be mostly riddled with problems and pain. Spiritual research has shown
that worldwide, the average human being is happy only 30% of the time while
40% of the time he is unhappy. The remaining 30% of the time a person is in a
neutral state where he does not experience happiness or unhappiness. For
example, when one is walking on the road or doing some mundane task etc. and
not having happy or unhappy thoughts.
The primary reason for this is because most people are at a lower spiritual level.
Therefore our decisions and actions quite often give others pain or end up
increasing the raja and tama in the environment. As a result, we end up
accumulating negative karma or give-and-take accounts. Therefore for most of
humanity our subsequent births will be more painful than our current.
While the world has made giant steps in economic, scientific and technical
progress, we are poorer than previous generations in terms of happiness which is
our most basic objective in life.
Given that all of us want happiness; rebirth and future lives will not give us the
superlative and lasting happiness we desire. Only spiritual evolvement and
merging into God will provide us with sustainable and lasting happiness.
1. About spiritual level
The Spiritual Science Research Foundation (SSRF) uses the term ‘spiritual level’ to
describe a person’s spiritual maturity or spiritual capacity. It acts as a scale to
define spiritual growth and gives perspective on where we are in our spiritual
journey. The higher one’s spiritual level the greater is the amount of God principle
manifest in that individual.
2. The scale of spiritual level
The SSRF uses a scale between 1 and 100% to describe spiritual level. 1% would
refer to the spiritual level of an inanimate object, while 100% would refer to the
pinnacle of spiritual growth for a person, which is Self-Realisation or being one
with God.
The majority of people in the current era, which is Kaliyuga, also known as the Era
of Strife, fall in the 20% spiritual level category. According to the science of
Spirituality, a person who is above the 70% spiritual level is known as a Saint. Just
as we have people who are at the top of their fields in the material world, so also,
in Spirituality, the Saints who live on Earth are the authorities. They are not just
scholars, but practitioners of the science of Spirituality in day-to-day life and are
God-realised souls.
Those Saints active in teaching Spirituality and nurturing seekers to grow
spiritually are known as Gurus. Less than 10% of the Saints living on Earth are
Gurus. Gurus are the physical form of the Teaching aspect of God and they act as
beacons of spiritual knowledge in our highly materialistic world.
3. Spiritual level and spiritual practice
4. How can spiritual level be measured?
Spiritual level cannot be measured by any modern scientific equipment, nor can it
be ascertained intellectually by any person. Only a Saint or a Guru can ascertain
the spiritual level of a person with the help of His highly activated sixth sense or
subtle perception ability.
Quite often the question is asked, “How can a Saint accurately measure a person’s
spiritual level?”
Just as the eye due to its intrinsic ability can easily differentiate between a blue
object and a red object with 100% accuracy, so also a Saint with His sixth sense
ability can accurately estimate a person’s spiritual level. The sixth sense enables
one to be acutely aware and accurately measure the unseen world.
As a rule of thumb, we have provided a scale below which will give an intellectual
understanding of one’s spiritual level.
With increase in one’s spiritual level, one’s attitude and perspective to life changes
dramatically. For example, a person at 30% spiritual level may find it very difficult
to find time in his busy schedule to attend even one spiritual discourse. The same
person having the same worldly commitments, after attaining the 40% spiritual
level will easily find time on a regular basis to attend spiritual discourses and
regularly study spiritual texts.
A person at a certain spiritual level, e.g. 30% spiritual level can only relate to a
person within a few percentage points from him. For example it is very difficult for
a person at the 30% spiritual level to relate to a person at the 40% spiritual level
and vice versa.
By the use of the intellect, it is somewhat possible to estimate that another person
is slightly ahead of one spiritually; however the estimation would at best be vague.
By use of the intellect it is impossible to identify whether a person is a Saint.
Spiritual level is defined by a number of contributing factors. In the following
points we have discussed some of the more important parameters that contribute
to a person’s spiritual level and how they vary with spiritual growth.
5. Breakdown of the world population in present times
by spiritual level
We have used spiritual research methodology to provide a breakdown of the world
population in the current era (Kaliyuga year 2006) by spiritual level based on 6.5
billion people.
Benefits of spiritual practice
Liberation from the cycle of birth and death
According to the science of Spirituality the definition of being liberated means not
being compelled to take birth again because one's destiny has been significantly
reduced.
Man is born repeatedly for two reasons. The first, that is, 65%, is to experience
happiness and sorrow according to destiny and the second, that is 35%, to make
spiritual progress so as to acquire Bliss.
On an average if one considers the accumulated account (that is all one's
accumulated merits and demerits caused due to the law of give-and-take) to
consist of 100 units, then in one birth, 6 units of these are experienced as destiny.
It stands to reason that a man should attain liberation within 16-17 births. But this
does not happen, as while undergoing those 6 units of destiny usually an average
person does not do any spiritual practice. Besides due to wilful actions the
accumulated account increases by 10 units. Thus at the time of death, the
accumulated account becomes 104 units and once again one gets entangled in the
cycle of birth and death.
By and large, everyone wants to live their life such that their next few lives will be
very happy. But the aim of life is not to have happy future births, but rather to get
out of the cycle of births and deaths. The reason that we are born is that we
haven’t yet learnt the lessons that we were meant to learn and so just as we have
to repeat a class if we fail our exams – likewise we have to be born over and over
again. Being liberated from the drudgery of this unending cycle can happen in this
very birth if we make an effort to grow spiritually and realise God. This is the
supreme spiritual goal any man can have.
Through spiritual practice, once a person reaches a minimum spiritual level of 60%
(samashti) or 70% (vyashti) one does not have to be reborn to make further
progress.
Benefits of spiritual practice
Bliss
Bliss is a superlative state which is far above and beyond happiness. The
happiness that we commonly refer to is in some way or the other related to the
external world. Bliss, on the other hand, is an experience pertaining to the soul
and is not related to external stimulii.
In life we find that whatever makes us happy has the potential to make us
unhappy. To understand this further, we have to study the media through which we
can experience happiness.
They are:
 The five senses: These are pleasures gained through the experiences of
touch, taste, sound, smell or sight.
Example: A person who loves ice-cream yearns to go to the ice-cream parlour. The
first ice-cream always tastes the best. As he keeps having more and more, the
pleasure that he gained from the first one begins to wane until he begins to feel
physically uncomfortable by the 7th or the 8th helping. Thus the pleasure gained
from ice-cream could not be sustained over a period of time. We can relate this
back to any object one desires in life - after our happiness from the object peaks,
it begins to wane.
 The mind: It is the part of one's thoughts that is linked with one's emotions
(our emotions and thoughts are interwoven with each other – unhappy thoughts
lead to unhappy feelings and vice-versa). Pleasure gained through the mind is
far superior to that gained through the five senses.
Example: What would be the most pleasurable emotion we could have? Probably it
would be the experience of falling in love. So take the example of two people who
fall in love and cannot dream of leading their lives apart from one another. Once
their relationship evolves into marriage, we find that the peak of their happiness
cannot be sustained. Each partner begins to see the other in a different light, and
in time they find that no one can hurt them or make them angrier than the very
spouse who also gives them so much joy!
 The intellect: This is our decision making and reasoning ability. It allows us
to experience a different kind of pleasure that is qualitatively and quantitatively
superior to the happiness gained through the mind.
Example: Let's take the example of a scientist who has immersed himself in
research. Now, say one day he solves a riddle that has baffled humankind for
centuries – of course he is elated. But what happens to his ecstasy when after a
while, the applause dies down? Now he is no longer on a high – in fact he is
restless, as he needs to busy himself with something new to discover. Or worse
still, he could be plunged into despair when he finds that this great discovery
(e.g.: the energy formula E=mc2
) has been used for the destruction of humankind
by way of the atom bomb.
This diagram shows how the happiness that we perceive through each of the
media (i.e. the 5 senses, mind, and intellect) progressively gets not only
qualitatively better but also lasts for a longer duration
However, when we experience Bliss from the soul, it is the most superlative quality
of happiness and lasts indefinitely. Bliss cannot be verbally described and has to be
experienced.
To indicate the limitation of words, let's take the example of the sweetness of
sugar. Is there any way we can verbally explain the sweetness of sugar to
someone who has no tongue? No! We find no words that can give us the actual
experience of the taste of sugar. Just as with Bliss, sweetness has to be
experienced to be understood. Spiritual practice is the only means by which one
can experience Bliss.
Spiritual Practice
Spirituality is to be experienced
1. Spiritual definition of ego
From a spiritual perspective, ego (aham) means considering oneself to be distinct
from others and God due to identification with the physical body and impressions
(sanskaars) in various centres of the subtle body. In short ego is leading our life as
per the thinking that our existence is limited to our 5 senses, mind, and intellect
and identifying with them to various degrees.
As per the science of Spirituality, our true state of existence is identification with
the Soul or God-principle within us and living our day to day life with this
consciousness. As the one and same God-principle exists within all, from a
spiritual perspective there is unity in all Creation.
However, depending on the level of our ego, we identify with the God-principle
within us, i.e. the Soul to varying degrees. If our ego is high, we identify less with
the Soul or the God-principle within us.
2. Ego from a psychological perspective
In layman’s terms one can define ego as pride about oneself. Thoughts such as my
body and mind, my intellect, my life, my wealth, my wife and children, I should
acquire happiness, etc. arise from ego alone.
Ego (ahankaar), awareness of the self (ahambhaav), pride, conceit and ‘i’ness are
words related to the word ‘ego or aham’ but on a psychological plane.
3. Subtle picture of a person having ego
The following is a subtle picture of a person with ego. It has been drawn by a
seeker of SSRF with highly advanced sixth sense, extrasensory perception or ESP.
The dark covering seen around the Soul is the ego of the person. As the ego of
this person is high he does not identify with the Soul. Due to the ego a covering of
black energy has collected around him. Also when one’s ego is high the flow of
grace from God is blocked.
As a result of the black energy covering coupled with the block in access to divine
grace, the person’s life is impacted negatively.
1. God’s ego
This is a state of no ego, i.e. the ego of the person is literally 0. This state is found
in Saints of 100% spiritual level when they are in a completely thoughtless state,
merged with God. The ‘i’ness of such a person in this state of complete
communion with God, is totally merged with the God-principle, i.e. there is no
‘i’ness. Hence all tasks that happen through such a person are mere acts (kriya)
not actions (karma) as they happen totally as per God’s wish. The hallmark of the
mental state of such Saints is that they are in a perpetual state of Bliss even in the
face of extreme adversity in their worldly lives.
2. Man’s ego
Man’s ego is again broadly divided into 2 subtypes:
2.1 Pure Ego
This is a state where traces of ego are seen in Saints of the highest order when
they are not in complete communion with God. These Saints have just a mere
awareness of one’s existence. This trace ego is required for the sustenance of body
functions.
 Pure ego can be understood as having the following attitudes :
 Considering oneself to be distinct or separate from Brahman (God principle),
that is harbouring awareness of the self through duality.
 Having awareness of one’s existence.
 Harbouring the spiritual emotion (bhav) that ‘I belong to others and all are
mine’.
Even this ego persists only as long as there is existence of the physical body. It
ceases to exist when the Saint gives up His body (passes away).
2.2 Impure Ego
This type of ego is what most of us experience. Almost all of us identify with our
physical body, or feelings and emotions and feel pride in our intellect. This is due
to various impressions in the centres of the subtle body like temperamental
characteristics, desires, likes and dislikes, etc.
Refer to the presentation on the functional structure of the mind.
Depending on thoughts and emotions, this ego can be
either sattvik (Sattva predominant), rajasik (Raja predominant)
or tamasik (Tamapredominant).
 Tamasik ego: The ego which is subtle basic Tama component predominant
is called tamasik ego, e.g. believing only in one’s own capability.
 Rajasik ego: Subtle basic Raja component predominant ego is
called rajasik ego, e.g. constantly striving for happiness.
 Sattvik ego: Ego which is predominant in the subtle
basic Sattva component is called sattvik ego, e.g. ego about sacrifice
is sattvik in nature.
3. Types according to the proportion of ego
On a scale of 0-100%, the ego of God or Saints at 100% spiritual level, when in a
state of complete communion with God, is 0%. The ego of the subtle sorcerer
(mantrik) of the highest strength from the 7th region of Hell (Patal) is 100%. On
this scale, the ego of an average individual is 30%. Adolf Hitler’s ego was 60%.
(Please note that by ‘average individual’ we mean a person who is average
spiritually. In his worldly life this individual could be a rich or poor person, a head
of state or a common working class individual.)
Depending on the proportion, ego can be classified as follows:
Abstract
The innumerable recorded and researched cases of past life experiences clearly
point to life after death. In all the recorded cases of reincarnations, it was found
that there was a variable time lag between the death of the person and his next
reincarnation on Earth. So, where do we go after death till our reincarnation on
Earth? Is it a single plane of existence or are there a variety of planes of
existence? If so, what are the factors that decide where we go after death? In this
article, we present the answers to these and other questions about this topic.
These answers are obtained through spiritual research done by seekers of the
Spiritual Science Research Foundation (SSRF) with highly developed sixth
sense (ESP).
Note: In order to understand this article better, it is recommended that you read
the article on the three subtle basic components of sattva, raja and tama.
1. What happens after death?
Spiritual research has shown that man is comprised of the following four basic
bodies:
 Physical
 Mental
 Causal or intellectual
 Supracausal or subtle ego
The picture below is a diagrammatic representation of what a human being is
comprised of.
When a person dies the physical body ceases to exist. However, the rest of his
existence or consciousness continues. The existence of the person minus the
physical body is known as the subtle body (linga deha) and it comprises of the
mental, causal (intellect) and supracausal (subtle ego) bodies. This subtle body
then goes to one of the 13 subtle planes of existence other than the Earth plane.
2. The 14 planes of existence in the Universe
There are 14 main planes of existence in the Universe. Seven of them are positive
planes of existence and seven are negative planes of existence. The seven
negative planes of existence are commonly known as Hell (Paataal). There are
numerous sub-planes within these main planes of existence.
Seven positive planes of existence: The planes of existence occupied mostly by
living persons and subtle bodies doing righteous deeds and engaged in spiritual
practice according to the positive path of spiritual practice are known as the seven
positive planes of existence or saptaloka. By positive path, we mean the
orientation of spiritual practice is towards God-realisation, which is the ultimate in
spiritual growth.
The Earth plane is the only physical plane of existence in the Universe and is also
the first plane of existence in the hierarchy of the positive planes of existence in
the Universe.
Seven Negative planes of existence: These are planes of existence occupied
mostly by subtle bodies that have done unrighteous deeds and are engaged in
spiritual practice according to the negative path. By negative path, we mean the
orientation of spiritual practice is towards attaining spiritual power, e.g.
supernatural powers. This spiritual power is primarily used to enhance one’s
control over others or for negative purposes. Thus all subtle bodies that go to any
one of the planes of existence of Hell, by virtue of their evil intentions become
ghosts.
Refer to the article on, ‘What is a ghost’?
Sub planes of existence of Hell (Narak): Every plane of existence of Hell (Paataal)
has a sub-plane known as Narak. For example, the first plane of existence of Hell
will have within it a sub-plane that is known as the first Narak. Narak is reserved
for the worst ghosts (demons, devils, negative energies, etc.) in Hell. The ghosts
(demons, devils, negative energies, etc.) occupying the first Narak face more
severe punishment and for a longer duration than those occupying the first plane
of existence of Hell.
The diagram below shows the 14 planes of existence in the Universe.
An explanation behind the color scheme used
 Earth is depicted reddish as it represents action (i.e. subtle
basic raja component), as it is the only plane where we have the physical body
to do something.
 Heaven has been depicted in pink, which represents an abundance of
happiness.
 Yellow represents spiritual knowledge and an increase in the subtle
basic sattva component. It finally becomes almost white at the highest stage,
which represents the close proximity to the unmanifest God principle.
 The regions of Hell are represented by darker shades to black, as there is an
increase in the subtle basic tama component.
What is Kundalini
1. What are the subtle energy systems in the body?
The universe is sustained by God’s mere presence. According to the Path
of Kundalini, God’s energy that is used in the running (i.e., creation, sustenance
and destruction) of the universe is Chaitanya (Divine Consciousness). With respect
to a person, this Chaitanya is known as chetanaa and it is that part of God’s
energy required for the functioning of a human being.
This chetanaa is of two types and, depending on its state of activity, it takes on
two different names.
 Active chetanaa – also known as prana-shakti or vital energy. The vital
energy or prana-shakti sustains and gives energy to the physical body, mind,
intellect and subtle ego. It is distributed through subtle channels known
as nadis. These nadis are prevalent throughout the body and supply energy to
the cells, nerves, arteries, lymph etc. Refer to the article – What are we
comprised of?
 Non-active chetanaa – which is known as the Kundalini. This Kundalini lies
dormant in a person until activated as described in the methods below.
The diagram below shows the distribution of the total subtle energy for vital
energy and the kundalini for spiritual growth.
2. What is the Kundalini used for?
The Kundalini or non-active chetanaa is used primarily for spiritual growth. It is
not used for, nor does it take part in, day-to-day bodily functioning.
3. How to activate the kundalini?
The Kundalini is activated through spiritual practice or spiritual transfer of energy.
3.1 Kundalini activation through spiritual practice
This includes practices that come under generic spiritual paths to God such as Path
of Action (Karmayoga), Path of Devotion, Path of Deliberate Rigour (Hathayoga)
and Path of the Guru’s Grace (Gurukrupaayoga). The practices in the Path
of Hathayoga include celibacy, pranayam (breathing exercises) and yogic exercises
and other spiritual practices.
Some people try to force the activation of the Kundalini by efforts through the Path
of Deliberate Rigour (Hathayoga). However this can lead to deleterious effects.
Some can even become insane from it.
3.2 Transfer of energy or shaktipat
Shaktipat refers to the bestowal of spiritual energy on one person by another i.e.
mainly a Guru/spiritually evolved person to His disciple. Shaktipat can be
transmitted with a sacred word or mantra, or by a look, thought or touch - the last
usually to the adnyaa chakra or brow chakra of the recipient. It is considered an
act of grace from the Guru to a deserving disciple. This transfer of energy itself
initiates the awakening of the Kundalini.
After it is awakened, the rate at which the Kundalini rises is dependent on the
disciple’s continuous and ever increasing efforts in spiritual practice.
3.3 Recommended way to awaken and channelise the Kundalini
Whatever the spiritual path, when there is spiritual growth the Kundalini rises.
SSRF recommends regular spiritual practice as per the six basic principles of
spiritual practice to help activate the kundalini naturally. Here the unmanifest Guru
Principle or the Teaching Principle of God itself activates the Kundalini. As it is
activated by the Guru’s grace then it automatically travels upwards and transforms
the seeker spiritually.
On the other hand, if it is thrust upon a seeker as in shaktipat, i.e. when someone
is suddenly given an excess of spiritual energy, while the experience is very
engaging and can be almost addictive, only ever increasing amounts of spiritual
practice both at a qualitative and quantitative level assure the continual grace of
the Guru Principle that leads the Kundalini on the right path and strengthens the
seeker’s faith.
To better understand this let us take the help of an analogy.
 Employing ones efforts in regular spiritual practice is like working hard and
then amassing a fortune
 Awakening the Kundalini by the direct transfer of energy is like being born
to a billionaire where the father provides the son with instant money.
Out of the two, having earned wealth (spiritual wealth) through hard earned
means is always a more sustainable and a surer option for future growth.
3.4 Key aspects of the Kundalini
Just as the heart is the principle centre (organ) of the circulatory system and the
brain of the nervous system, similarly the subtle energy system has various
centres (chakras), channels and ducts.
There are 72,000 subtle channels (nadi). Of these channels, the three main subtle
channels are:
 Sushumna nadi, that is, the central channel that extends from base of spine
to the top of the head,
 Pinglaa or the surya (sun) nadi, that is, the channel that runs to the right of
the sushumna nadi, and the
 Ida or the chandra (moon) nadi, that is, the channel that runs to the left of
the sushumna nadi.
The vital energy is transmitted in the body through the surya (sun) nadi and the
chandra (moon) nadi and the other smaller nadis. The vital energy flow alternates
between the surya (sun) nadi and the chandra (moon) nadi.
The Kundalini is the spiritual energy and it generally lies dormant, coiled at the
base of the sushumna nadi for an average person. Through spiritual practice it
begins to rise from the base of the spine through the sushumna nadi right till the
top of the head. While it does so, the Kundalini activates each of the chakras along
the way.
As the Kundalini passes each chakra along the sushumna nadi, there is a thin
subtle valve that it needs to push through at each chakra to make its onward
journey upwards. As it keeps pushing through the wall there is sometimes an
increase in the amount of spiritual energy from the sushumna nadi at that chakra.
Having nowhere to go, it sometimes flows out through the surrounding subtle
ducts and becomes converted intoprana-shakti or vital energy. For that period of
time, the concerned person may experience a heightened activity associated with
that area. For example an increase in prana-shakti or vital energy around the
sacral or swaadhisthaan chakra area can produce a heightened sexual drive.
As discussed earlier, the kundalini rises through spiritual practice regardless of
path. However the frame of reference may change in terms of how that Path to
God perceives it. For example when the kundalini passes the anaahat or
heart chakra:
 According to the Path of Devotion the seeker is said to have reached the
manifest bhav state which is a state of manifest spiritual emotion.
 However with respect to the Path of Knowledge a seeker begins to
experience Chaitanya or Divine Consciousness.
According to a 1985 article by David T. Eastman in Yoga Journal, some of the more
common signs and symptoms of an awakened kundalini include:
 Involuntary jerks, tremors or shaking
 Intense heat, especially as energy is experienced passing through
the chakras
 Spontaneous pranayama, asanas, mudras and bandhas
 Visions or sounds at times associated with a particular chakra
 Intense feelings of pleasure
 Emotional purgings in which particular emotions become dominant for short
periods of time.
Ref: Kundalini, Wikipedia.org, Sep 2010 These are effects that are more seen
in shaktipat as a means of awakening the kundalini. Seekers serious about
spiritual growth must be aware that while these experiences seem very tangible
and attractive, they are just preliminary outcomes and experiences due to the
sudden transfer of spiritual energy, and do not in any way represent the end in
itself of spiritual practice or alignment with the purpose of life.
Spiritual Remedies for Physical Illnesses
Abstract: We know that symptoms of physical illnesses are caused by
psychological factors as well as physical factors. But most of us are unaware that
in a huge majority of cases,
 the symptoms of our physical illnesses are caused first hand by spiritual
factors alone or
 spiritual factors have a big hand in aggravating the existing illness or
 spiritual factors are responsible for the non-response to adequate treatment
in many cases.
In this article, we present the spiritual research into some physical illnesses
caused by a spiritual factor, namely ghosts (demons, devils, negative energies,
etc.) and the corresponding spiritual healing remedies.
This is by no means an exhaustive thesis on all illnesses but is aimed to give an
idea of how the various symptoms are caused by ghosts and how they can be
cured by spiritual healing remedies by using the data unravelled through spiritual
research.
1. Introduction
All of us have experienced physical illness in some form or the other. It could be a
mild symptom like a running nose or something more serious like renal stones,
cancer or AIDS. In our section on spiritual causes of difficulties in life, we have
explained that the root cause of problems in life (health problems included) can be
physical, psychological and/or spiritual. Modern medical science, also known as
Allopathy has uncovered only the physical and psychological causes of physical
illnesses.
Most of us have heard about the concepts where a person feels like they are in a
tunnel and that they are moving towards the light at the end of the tunnel. This
visualisation acts as an analogy which represents the feeling that the person sees
a solution or a happy ending at the end of the ordeal they are going through.
We decided to examine what the phrase ‘the light at the end of a tunnel’ meant
from a spiritual perspective. Most often it is used spiritually in the following two
instances:
1. When a ghost (demon, devil, negative energy, etc.) affects a person
or a house, then quite often a spiritual authority like a priest or a medium
is called in to help remedy the situation. A common spiritual technique that
is used by them is to ask the distressing entity to 'go towards the light.' The
entity could either be an ancestor who is earthbound and has not been able
to move on or it could be a ghost. Therefore the intention of the priest or
the medium in telling the entity to go towards the light is asking him to go
towards God or Divinity or to higher positive planes.
2. Sometimes when people have near death experiences (NDE’s), they
too have a vision of traveling through a tunnel with a light at the end of it.
We investigated both these events through spiritual research to ascertain what the
‘light’ was that people could see. The following were the findings:
 The Divine Light in actuality is definitely seen by people who have a genuine
desire for God–realisation. Those above a spiritual level of 50% (samashti,
samashṭi) or 60% (vyashti, vyashṭi) are actually able to see Divine Light either
due to immense merits or very little ego. As they are above the 50% (samashti)
or 60% (vyashti) spiritual level they don't just see the Light but also finally
reach the Divine Heavenly Light.
A person at a lower spiritual level, such as 40%, may see a Divine Light when
they die if they had an intense desire for spiritual growth towards God-
realisation. In this case, while they may see the Light, they don’t actually reach
the region of Heaven.
 The rest of us, at the point of death, are not able to see any light. Instead
as soon as we die, ordinarily we see darkness. Even though the 'Region of the
Dead (Martyalok)' that we go through immediately after death is purplish in
colour, most subtle bodies journeying through it see only darkness. The reason
is because the subtle body has a black covering of impressions of unsatisfied
desires, personality defects, ego and in many cases a covering of black energy
of ghosts. Hence it is as if they have their eyes closed and thus cannot perceive
the actual colors of the Region of the Dead (Martyalok).
 Those people without a genuine desire for God-realisation who see a light
are in fact seeing the light generated by an illusion-creating subtle sorcerer.
Subtle sorcerers, due to their high spiritual strength, can create illusions of light
as well as feelings of peace and happiness radiating from the light. These
illusions are created by their spiritual powers and their black energy. They use
this as a mechanism to lure subtle bodies and trap them into slavery.
Earthbound ancestors are generally of a lower spiritual level and with a lot of
attachments and unfulfilled desires. This means that they ordinarily cannot see
a Divine Light when they die. By telling them to go towards the light, what one
is effectively doing is telling the departed ancestor to go towards the illusion
creating subtle sorcerer.
 The tunnel that is reportedly seen is in the Region of the Dead (Martyalok).
Due to a highly activated sixth sense (ESP), seekers of SSRF have been able to
see not only the tunnel but describe its details too.
So what is the solution to ensure that one sees true Divine Light? The best way is
to utilise one’s time on Earth in doing spiritual practice. This spiritual practice
needs to conform to the six basic principles of spiritual practice else it could lead to
stagnation or even deterioration in spiritual growth.
Spiritual energy in the body
About this section
This section explores the subtle energy systems in the body namely the Kun
alinī and the Vital energy. These unseen energy systems are responsible for
providing the energy required for the various functions of the gross and subtle
body.
The subtle energy systems in the body
The subtle energy systems in the body
The body functions through various systems like the cirulatory system, respiratory
system, digestive system etc. Similarly there is a system to provide energy to the
physical as well as subtle body. The components of the subtle body are denoted by
the star against it in the diagram below.
The other systems can be seen by dissection of the physical body. But the subtle
energy systems are not visible to the gross eye. Only those people with an
active sixth sense can perceive it. Some people equate this subtle energy system
with the nervous system but this is incorrect.
Just as the heart is the principle centre (organ) of the circulatory system and the
brain of the nervous system, similarly the subtle energy system has various
centres. They are known as ducts (granthi) and centres (chakras). All the ducts
and centres are situated in the Central Channel (Sushumna nadi). In the
subsequent articles we discuss these subtle energy systems in detail.
What is the relationship between awakening of
the Kundalini and spiritual level?
The awakening of the Kundalini and the awakening of the chakras is a process that
is closely related to the spiritual level of a person. The following table, obtained
though spiritual research, provides the spiritual level at which the Kundalini is
awakened and travels up the Central channel awakening the various chakras. The
awakening of the Kundalini starts at the 60% spiritual level.
Spiritual level
Awakening of the chakras
65% Muladhar-chakra
70% Swadhisṭhan-chakra
75% Manipur-chakra
80% Anahat-chakra
85% Vishuddha-chakra
90% Adnya-chakra
95% Sahasrar-chakra
Beyond 95% Awakening of the Brahmarandra
Currently, especially in the spiritual healing and new age circles, we often hear
people discuss their chakras and whether some chakra is opened or closed, or
indicating that the chakras need to be balanced. This is a misnomer as
the chakras (as seen from the table above) do not get activated until a higher
spiritual level and for the vast majority of people, they are dormant. What they are
in fact referring to is the active chetana which is also known as Prana-
shakti or vital energy. For example, the active chetana, which is strong in and
around the heart region, in their parlance, would be incorrectly referred to as the
Heart chakra being open.
Sounds of the Universe
We recently published a number of self-generated Divine sounds which have the
ability to spiritually heal and impart spiritual experiences.
Some of our readers have promptly pointed out that these Divine sounds markedly
resemble sounds that come from outer space, namely, the sound of pulsars.
A pulsar (portmanteau of pulsating star) is a highly magnetized, rotating neutron
star that emits a beam of electromagnetic radiation.
How does the sound of pulsars compare to the Divine Sounds that we have
published?
You can find out for yourself by hearing the pulsar sounds below and then listening
to the Divine sounds.
1. Introduction to Divine sounds
The work of Saints is for the upliftment of humankind. Their every move and
thought is for the benefit of society. Due to Their presence and resolve, many
people benefit spiritually. Saints think only of everyone’s benefit and this thought
becomes Their resolve which then starts to work. One such Saint who works
through resolve for the benefit of society is H. H. Dr. Athavale.
Today, the influence of negative energies is on the rise all over the world. Negative
energies create obstacles on the path of individuals who perform spiritual practice.
H.H. Dr. Athavale contemplates on how to overcome these obstacles. While He was
engrossed in this thought, on 23 June 2011, at 3.18 p.m. for no evident reason, a
sound was heard in His room at SSRF's spiritual research centre in Ramnathi, Goa,
India. Seekers from the audio-video department of the ashram recorded that
sound.
H.H. Dr. Athavale explained that this sound has the ability to perform spiritual
healing on people suffering from distress due to negative energies. Seekers who
heard it were not only relieved of their spiritual distress, but they had different
spiritual experiences as well.
This proved that the sound was Divine in origin. From then, until 28 November
2011, 15 different Divine sounds were heard. They came from His residential
room, His study and the room where He performs satseva, the ceiling fan He uses,
the air-cooler in His study-room and the refrigerator used to store His food items.
All emitted various Divine Sounds at certain times.
This happens due to the accumulation of Divine vibrations in objects used by, or in
the near proximity of Saints. This would be akin to one getting sun tan in the
presence of the Sun. Later, Divine sound was also heard in the premises used by
SSRF's research centre, at Devad, near Mumbai, India.
Thousands of seekers from all over the world have experienced the spiritual
healing capability of these Divine sounds. Since H.H. Dr. Athavale had the yearning
to reduce distress due to negative energies of people around the world who
perform spiritual practice, God has given this invaluable gift to the entire
humankind. The entire episode reveals the father-like unconditional love H.H. Dr.
Athavale has for the society.

3. Instructions for listening to the Divine sounds
While listening to these Divine sounds, do pay attention to which sound causes
distress or increases the existing distress, or which sound makes you feel good.
That is the sound that is required for you.
A. I do not know if I have distress due to negative energies
If you have not noticed any distress in yourself until now, and suddenly feel
distress after listening to the Divine sounds, it can mean that you are also
under the influence of negative energies. In that case, you can listen to the
Divine sound which has caused your distress to manifest.
B. I know that I have distress due to negative energies. Which
sound should I listen to?
Those of you, who already know that you are suffering from distress due to
negative energies, can listen to the Divine sound which causes most distress
in you or increases your distress.
B 1. How long should I listen to the Divine sound?
You can listen to the distressing sound continuously until you are able to
tolerate it, as spiritual healing occurs from it.
B 2. What should I do if I cannot tolerate listening to it for long?
If listening to a chosen Divine sound becomes intolerable, then switch to a
Divine sound which makes you feel good, until your distress reduces.
Thereafter, again revert to the Divine sound which causes distress. Keep
repeating this cycle. Healing through Divine sounds weakens the strength of
negative energy and therefore does spiritual healing on you.
B 3. What if I start experiencing a different type of distress caused
by negative energy?
If there is a change in the type of negative energy attacking or affecting us,
we may need to change the Divine Sound we need to listen to for spiritual
healing. This is akin to taking a new medicine when we start suffering from a
different illness.
When the mode of distress caused by the negative energies changes or if a
different negative energy starts causing distress, listen to all the Divine
sounds all over again, decide afresh on the necessary Divine sound for
yourself and use it for spiritual healing. At times, you may need to listen to a
different Divine sound after just a few hours.
C. I do not experience any distress due to negative energies, should
I also listen to the Divine sounds?
Those of you who do not suffer from distress due to negative energies can
keep listening to a Divine sound, which makes you feel good. After some
time if you experience a reduction in the benefit, listen to all the sounds all
over again and decide which sound is most beneficial for you.
There are sounds which enhance spiritual practice and spiritual emotion.
When there is no negative energy distress, listen to these sounds.
Use the Divine sounds with gratitude and reverence as they are a gift to us from
God. These sounds should not be used for worldly benefits such as to overcome
family problems, problems at the work place, or financial problems, because these
Divine sounds will not work for these problems. Do use them for spiritual benefit
only.
1. Introduction to life before birth
Is this life all I have? Where do we come from before we are born? Where do I go
after I die?
These questions will undoubtedly be familiar to almost all of us. Some time ago,
we published an article on ‘What happens after death’. Through spiritual research
we will cover our life before we are born in this 2 part series of articles. The two
parts are:
 Part 1: The time before we are conceived
 Part 2: The time we are in the womb
The reason we have published both life before birth and life after death is because
it brings to focus that we live our lives with consequences. TheLaw of
Karma pervades our entire life. The life that we lead in our current birth decides
the quality of our afterlife and subsequent births. Paradoxically while most people
are interested in the spiritual life before birth and life after death, only a handful
are interested in actually doing something about their spiritual life on Earth. This is
so as to have a better afterlife and subsequent births and to ultimately get out of
the cycle of birth and death.
2. Where are we before we are born?
After we die on Earth, we (i.e. our respective subtle bodies) go to one of the
various subtle regions of the Universe depending on our spiritual level and merits
and demerits. Here we stay for varied periods of time before we get a chance to
be born back on Earth. (Refer to point 2.4 for which subtle region we are most
likely to go to.)
2.1 Life before birth: Regions of Heaven and above
In the current times, only 2 out of every 100 of us will make it to the higher
positive regions of the Universe such as Heaven (Swargaloka),Mahaaloka etc. In
the higher regions of the Universe, the predominant experience is happiness and
Bliss.
The rest of us go to either the Nether world (Bhuvaloka) or one of the regions of
Hell (Paataal). Here the predominant experience is unhappiness to extreme
suffering.
2.2 Life before birth: The Nether world (Bhuvaloka)
The suffering experienced in the Nether world (Bhuvaloka) is generally far more
than that on the Earth plane as there is not much freewill. In the Nether world
(Bhuvaloka), 10% of the subtle bodies are guided by subtle bodies from higher
regions such as Heaven and Mahaaloka. These subtle bodies are those of seekers
with yearning for spiritual growth. Approximately 2% are controlled completely by
destiny. Approximately 88% of subtle bodies are attacked by ghosts (demons,
devils, negative energies, etc.) and controlled by them. These subtle bodies are
fully conscious that they are controlled by ghosts but can do little to fend them off
as they do not have any spiritual strength of their own.
2.3 Life before birth: Regions of Hell (Paataal)
With regards to Hell, even the worst part of one’s life on Earth is better than that
experienced in the regions of Hell (Paataal). In Hell (Paataal) subtle bodies are
controlled 100% by higher level negative energies. As we go to the lower rungs of
Hell, the suffering and pain is only amplified. We stay in the region
of Bhuvaloka for approximately 50-400 years before we are eligible for rebirth on
Earth. In the case of the region of Hell, we can languish for thousands of years
before we get an opportunity to be reborn.
2.4 Spiritual practice in the subtle regions
The following chart shows the likelihood of the subtle region we will go to after we
die in current times.
The only thing that can alleviate the suffering in the lower subtle regions of the
Universe is spiritual practice. However the likelihood of doing spiritual practice in
the lower subtle regions of the Universe (i.e. Nether and Hell) is next to nil.
Intense suffering compounded by attacks from higher level ghosts make the
environment impossible for spiritual practice as subtle bodies switch into survival
mode to combat the harshness of the environment.
In the subtle region of Heaven (Swargaloka), the happiness experienced is such
that subtle bodies get caught up in its experience and hardly do any spiritual
practice. So while subtle bodies can theoretically do spiritual practice in Heaven
(Swargaloka), the likelihood of actually doing it is minimal due to distractions of
various pleasurable experiences.
Spiritual practice can be done and actually does happen only in the higher subtle
regions of Mahaaloka to Satyaloka. Subtle bodies in these regions do not have to
be reborn on the Earth plane to settle their give-and-take accounts or to do
spiritual practice.
Life on the Earth region is of great importance as it is the only plane where people
from the lower regions can be born to do spiritual practice, complete their give-
and-take and get outside the cycle of birth and death.
2.5 Do we know about our previous births while in the subtle planes?
The average subtle body generally remembers events only from its last birth on
Earth. It does not remember births before that unless they are very notable. This
is up to the time the subtle body is reborn on Earth again. Wanting to know about
previous lives is not the highest item on our agenda in regions such as the Nether
world or Hell. Avoiding unhappiness, fending off ghosts and the agony of being
away from people that they are attached to are generally what occupy most subtle
bodies in the Nether world.
2.5.1 Why do we not remember our previous births in this lifetime?
As we get involved with the world, we forget our previous life in the subtle regions
and on Earth. Our physical senses strongly overshadow our sixth sense and we
lose our ability to perceive our previous births. It is also God’s compassion for us
that He has so arranged that we forget the previous lifetimes. Just imagine how
difficult it would be to go about the day to day affairs of this life remembering past
life events like the past birth relationships we had with the people in our life in this
birth. For example, a father and son in this life could well have been husband and
wife in an earlier life. Or a present life mother could have been responsible for the
death of her present life daughter in a previous lifetime.
3. Why are we born on Earth?
We are born on Earth to settle our give-and-take account or Karma and to do
spiritual practice. In the Nether world and Hell it is almost impossible to do
spiritual practice so as to burn our give-and-take account.
Refer to the article on the purpose of life.
After the death of a person, being born on Earth again is not in the hands of the
person (or rather his subtle body). Birth on the Earth plane is rare. For every entry
of a subtle body into an embryo, millions of other subtle bodies compete to gain
entry on Earth to experience worldly life. But it is only that subtle body that is
destined to enter an embryo that will get birth on Earth.
4. What are the factors that decide when and where and to
whom we are reborn on Earth
The two main factors that decide our birth on Earth are:
1. Are the conditions on Earth conducive for settling our give-and-take
account?
2. Which region are we in prior to our birth on Earth?
4.1 The give and take account and rebirth
Our give-and-take account is the single most important factor that decides
 the time period when we are born on Earth and
 into which family etc.
Our give-and-take account decides the time of our conception right up to the year,
month, hour, minute and second. This means that we take birth on Earth during
that period when it is most conducive for us to complete a maximum amount of
our accumulated give-and-take account. Hence we take birth at the same time
when those people with whom we have major give-and-take accounts are around
and also that external circumstances on Earth are conducive too. Let us take a
look at the following example case-study:
Mr. A has cheated Mr. B of all his fortune. Thus Mr. A has created an adverse give-
and-take account with Mr. B. If he dies without repaying this debt then he will
have to be reborn to repay it and thus complete that account. Now to complete
this, he will either have to be reborn immediately when Mr. B is still around or wait
till such time that Mr. B is reborn. Also if Mr. A has further lived a life of fraudulent
deals etc. he will have to face a life of major unhappiness in one or more of his
rebirths to atone for this. Naturally he will have to be born during a period of
general strife. Hence he cannot be born during relatively good times.
An important point about the give-and-take account is that it is not maintained in
terms of how much money is to be returned etc. but in terms of units of
unhappiness or happiness. In the above example if Mr. A by cheating Mr. B of a
certain amount of money has been responsible for 1000 units of unhappiness to
Mr. B then Mr. A may be reborn as mother and Mr. B as her child. The child (Mr. B
in earlier birth) is born very loving and obedient and enjoys lot of love from the
mother. He then dies in a fatal accident or brief illness at the age of say 10 years.
By that time the mother has become quite attached to the child and his untimely
death thus causes 1000 units of unhappiness to his now mother but earlier Mr. A.
The religion that we are born to takes a lesser priority as compared to the give-
and-take account we have with the parents we are born to.
4.1.1 What decides which part of the accumulated account will play out as
one’s destiny on Earth?
Here again the same rule applies: that part of the accumulated give-and-take
account will be selected based on what can be maximally settled in the impending
birth.
4.1.2 Can parents attract a more advanced and saattvik subtle body
before conception through spiritual practice like chanting?
Yes, it is possible to attract a more advanced and more saattvik subtle body into
the womb through spiritual practice. This is only possible when parents are doing a
considerable amount of spiritual practice, (i.e. a minimum of 4-5 hours a day
according to the six basic principles of spiritual practice including the sacrifice of
body, mind and wealth to serve God).
In the event of the spiritual practice by parents, suppose the first subtle body in
line (according to the strength of give-and-take with the parent) to come into the
womb is not that saattvik, then it will get superseded by the next
most saattvik subtle body in line. Some of the characteristics ofsaattvik children
are that they are well behaved, intelligent and well adjusted. There are also less
chances of having physically and mentally challenged children. The reason for this
is that people have challenged children due to negative destiny. Destiny is
overcome through spiritual practice. If parents are doing a high amount of spiritual
practice according to the six basic principles of spiritual practice then their
negative destinies are reduced.
If a Saint (i.e. a person above the 70% spiritual level) is to be born then
the spiritual level of the mother needs to be at least 50-60% to be able to bear the
positivity of the baby. The mother’s spiritual level holds 70% importance as
opposed to the father’s spiritual level.
4.1.3 What decides if one is born to wealthy families or to parents of a
higher spiritual level?
If a subtle body has more merits it will generally be born in good conditions and
into families that are well off. If the subtle body has an above average spiritual
level, it will be born to parents that are of a higher spiritual level that will be able
to nurture its spiritual growth. However Saints being born are beyond merits and
demerits and can also be born into very poor families. This will depend on their
mission on Earth.
4.2 Rebirth on Earth with respect to the region we are in before birth
The likelihood of being born on Earth is much lower when a subtle body is in the
 higher regions of the Universe such as Mahaaloka and above or
 lower regions such as Hell.
4.2.1 Rebirth from regions above Mahaaloka
As mentioned earlier when a subtle body attains the subtle regions
of Mahaaloka and above they are beyond the 60% (samashti, samashṭi) or 70%
(vyashti, vyashṭi) spiritual level. At this spiritual level they attain Mukti or
liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Whatever remaining destiny they may
have can be settled from the subtle region itself through spiritual practice.
People beyond 60% (samashti) or 70% (vyashti) spiritual level can however get
born of their own will. In Mahaaloka and Janaloka as the ‘I’ or subtle ego is still
active, though minimal, the subtle bodies themselves decide when they want to be
reborn as per the time conducive for their mission. Because of their high spiritual
level, they are born just by their wish and they will be born to parents of a higher
spiritual level. Even more spiritually evolved subtle bodies from Tapaloka decide
both when and where they will be reborn. In fact, many such evolved subtle
bodies are already born in the world to sustain the coming 1000 years of spiritual
renewal. Refer to the article on Armageddon.
4.2.2 From the region of Heaven
If one is in the region of Heaven, it can take approximately thousands of years to
be reborn on Earth again.
4.2.3 From the regions of Hell
In the lower regions of the Universe such as Hell, the time period of suffering is
greatly increased. Along with this, higher level ghosts directly influence the subtle
body’s existence making them do negative acts. As a result, the subtle body goes
into a negative vortex of negative give-and-take which keeps them in the lower
regions of Hell.
It is only when a subtle body from the first three regions of Hell has completed its
quota of suffering that it gets rebirth on Earth. Even then the probability of a
subtle body from the first region of Hell getting reborn on Earth is only 1 in
100,000 births. The probability of rebirth from the 2nd and 3rd regions of Hell is
even more negligible. The likelihood of getting birth from beyond the third region
of Hell is next to nonexistent.
In the approximately 350,000 births that happen on a daily basis around the
world, only three subtle bodies will be from Hell, the rest will be mainly from the
Netherworld and only a few from Heaven.
In some rare cases a subtle body will be going through its first birth even in
today’s era. As these subtle bodies have no prior give-and-take accounts, all the
events in their life are due to their wilful action. Also as they do not have any
fixed raja-tama impressions in their sub-conscious minds, they can use this wilful
action for spiritual practice. Hence they are in the best position to achieve God-
realisation in their first birth itself.
5. What is the time gap between death and rebirth on Earth?
There is no fixed time interval between death and rebirth on Earth. On an average
it is 50-400 years for subtle bodies from the Nether region (Bhuvaloka). Subtle
bodies in Heaven may have to wait thousands of years before they get rebirth on
Earth.
It is in very rare cases that a person dies and gains immediate entry into a womb.
Generally if this happens it will be just after the first trimester. Therefore one is
reborn in 6 months time. The probability of this happening is 0.001% out of all
births.
In even rarer cases the subtle body of a person who has just died can oust some
other subtle body in a 9 month old foetus and be born again immediately. In this
case the subtle body ousting another would need to have a higher spiritual level
and a more intense give-and-take with the family being born to.
6. When is the next birth of a person decided?
The next birth is decided at the time of death in the previous life itself in the case
of the majority of people. This is because most subtle bodies do not do any
spiritual practice in the afterlife after their physical death. As spiritual practice is
the only way to nullify the give-and-take account, for the majority of subtle bodies
the give-and-take remains unchanged due to a lack of spiritual practice in the
afterlife.
Only in the case of evolved subtle bodies coming from the region such
as Mahaaloka and Janaloka, it is decided at the time of their birth. This is because
when to be born is as per their wish, i.e. they are not affected by destiny. However
the subtle bodies in the lower subtle regions like the Nether region (Bhuvaloka),
Heaven (Swargaloka) and regions of Hell are 100% bound by destiny.
7. How many births have we gone through?
It is very difficult to give an answer that will encompass all people. The thing is we
could have lived over a thousand births as humans and it could also be the first
time we are being born in this current lifetime of ours. However on average the
person at the 20% spiritual level in today’s’ world would have been born a number
of times in the last 1000 years. The adjoining table gives one an understanding of
the various types of births that a human at the 20% spiritual level could go
through over a thousand year span.
Please note this is typical of a person that has come from the Nether region
(Bhuvaloka). He can be born in various forms to suffer before coming back as a
human.
8. Does a person know his destiny or who he is going to be
born to?
A person does not know about the family he is going to be born to until the very
moment of conception. Even after that there is a likelihood of it losing its place in
the womb to another subtle body. At the point in time of conception they have an
understanding of their give-and-take with the family they are being born into. This
means they understand whether the account is positive or negative. They may
also understand the nature of the reason for the account. They are however not
privy to the life that is destined for them.
9. Before one is born is there any guidance from an evolved
subtle body on what is expected of one?
No, there is no guidance given.
10. What decides the sex of the baby?
In the first birth the sex of the newborn is decided by God. From God’s point of
view, being born as a male or female is a moot point from the perspective of
realising the basic goal of life, i.e. attaining God-realisation.
After the first birth, those who are born as males generally continue to be born as
males if that is the predominant impression in the sub-conscious mind of the
person. This happens according to the rule that ‘What we don’t know we are not
interested in’. However if a person happens to have a lesbian or gay constitution
that person can be born in the next birth in the sex which they have a stronger
liking for.
From completing ones give-and-take account point of view being male or female is
of no value as the other personality characteristics remain the same like anger etc.
Also getting a male birth is not necessarily a plus from a God-realisation point of
view.
In fact according to Spiritual science, man and woman are not superior or inferior,
rather they are just one unit – Sun Channel (Surya nadi) and Moon Channel
(Chandra nadi) of the Universal Spiritual Energy system (Kun
alinī).
However in exceptional cases like for example when a woman has taken immense
beating for years from her husband and wants to repay him in the same coin by
becoming the husband in another birth with the present husband being born as
the wife, a reversal of sexes can happen.
But again, it is not really necessary to be born as husband and wife in role reversal
to undergo the above mentioned negative destiny. The present life husband can
undergo the requisite units of unhappiness in other ways.
11. What decides whether an animal is reborn as a human?
There is a chance of an animal being born as a human being if a human being had
regressed to that animal form as punishment for his misdeeds. After the animal
that was initially a human has finished its quota of suffering as an animal, it can
be reborn in human form. Rituals for departed ancestors done by their
descendants also help.
It is extremely difficult for an animal (that was born as an animal to start with) to
evolve to a human being as it is very difficult for an animal to do spiritual practice.
However, an animal who has attained a Saint's satsang, consumed Holy sacrament
(prasad), listened to Holy songs or repetition of the Name of God regularly may
develop the desire for God realisation and evolve spiritually to human form. Also if
an animal lives with a Saint, and the Saint makes a resolve for the animal to
progress spiritually to evolve to a human form, then an animal could attain a
human birth.
12. Can departed ancestors of a family interfere with a subtle
body being born to the family?
Departed ancestors of higher spiritual level or ancestors with the help of ghosts
(demons, devils, negative energies, etc.) of higher spiritual power
like maantriks etc. can interfere with a subtle body being born to the family by
preventing a birth or preventing a subtle body of a particular sex, e.g. male to be
born in the family. In such cases the subtle body next in the queue or with the
next highest give and take takes birth instead. This action of interference by the
departed ancestors is either an attention seeking action or an act of revenge etc.
Refer to the article on why would my departed ancestors want to trouble me?
13. In Summary
What does this article mean for us?
 The things that most people chase during their lifetime, such as job, status,
wealth and family have little bearing on how we do in the present life with
respect to the spiritual purpose of life and none whatsoever on the afterlife. The
only currency in the afterlife is our spiritual level.
 Human birth on the Earth plane is very precious from a spiritual
perspective. It is the only plane where we can do spiritual practice to overcome
our destiny and ultimately take us out of the cycle of birth and death.
 In the current era we have to wait for many centuries before we get birth on
Earth. This is if we make it to the Nether region; if we go to the region of Hell
the likelihood of being born again on Earth is only after thousands of years.
 In the current era on average only 30% of us will make it to the Nether
region (Bhuvaloka). The majority of us will go to one of the regions of Hell.
 The current times i.e. between the years 1999-2022 the world will see a
changing of mini eras in the main Era of Strife (Kaliyuga). This era is very
conducive for spiritual growth wherein one year of spiritual practice is
equivalent to some 50 years in any other era.
 Through spiritual practice once we achieve the spiritual level of 60%
(samashti) or 70% (vyashti) in this birth itself, we do not have to come back to
the earth plane to settle our destiny.
Spiritual research into the age of the universe and its
cycles
1. Introduction
In some of our articles, we have made reference to the age of the universe and
its four Eras of Satyayug, Tretāyug, Dwāparyug and Kaliyug. We have received
questions from our readers asking us what we define as the universe and how we
reconcile the age of the universe with modern science’s view. This article is a
response to those queries, where we explain the age of the universe and how old
the universe is according to Divine Knowledge received through spiritual research.
Note from the editorial team: As a policy SSRF publishes articles that are more
practical, so that people can learn from them and improve their lives.
Understanding creation is mostly a theoretical endeavour and has little to no
practical value in our spiritual journey. Hence, please consider this article as simply
a supplement to the articles in which we have mentioned the universe. Here we
have shared just a few pertinent points with regard to the topic, to remove any
ambiguity in the other articles that refer to the universe.
2. Definition of the universe
At the outset let us define what SSRF means by the universe. SSRF defines the
universe as the entire seen and unseen world. This means it includes the Earth
along with the solar system, all the constellations and galaxies that we see in the
sky. But this too is just a fraction of the universe. Along with this, it also includes
the seven negative subtle planes of existence and the six positive subtle planes of
existence as given in our article what happens after death.
3. How old is the universe
To understand this section there is a basic spiritual law of creation that one should
be familiar with. Everything in the universe including the universe itself, is first
created, then sustained for a period of time, and finally destroyed. Creation,
sustenance and dissolution of the universe and its elements are continuous
processes which have been taking place since time immemorial.
Through spiritual research, we have found that the entire universe has gone
through many such cycles of being created, sustained and then destroyed. The
partial destruction of the universe is known as pralay and we have explained this
in more detail in the sections below.
After the universe is created and before it is destroyed, (i.e. during the time it is
sustained) it goes through many cycles. The smallest of these cycles (also known
as a paryay) has 4 Eras. They are Satyayug, Tretāyug, Dwāparyug and Kaliyug.
Through spiritual research, we have found that the following are the number of
years each of these eras in a cycle last for:
In the current cycle (paryay), we are approximately 5112 years into the era
of Kaliyug (translated as the Era of Strife). Therefore, since the current cycle
(paryay) began, we have traversed through roughly a little over 3.8 million years
and we still have over 420,000 years to go. At the end ofKaliyug, there is a mini-
dissolution before Satyayug starts again. The mini-dissolution is mostly about
extensive destruction such as war, natural disasters, loss of life, etc. The level of
destruction is fractional as compared to the dissolution of the universe which is
known as pralay.
One of the key differences in these Eras is the level of sāttviktā in society and the
average spiritual level of humankind. The following chart shows the mode spiritual
level of humankind in each Era in a cycle.
4. Main cycles of the universe
The following are the other main cycles in time that the universe goes through:
4.1 Destruction or dissolution of the universe
The following are the types of dissolution/destruction that take place in the
universe periodically:
4.1.1 Pralay (every 4.32 billion years)
 Pralay is translated as the dissolution of the universe.
 What gets destroyed? When a pralay takes place, then the Earth plane
(along with the galaxies etc.) (Bhulok), the Nether World (Bhuvalok), the 7
regions of Hell (Pātāl), and Heaven (Swargalok) get destroyed.
 What remains? However, the higher positive subtle regions
of Mahālok, Janalok, Tapalok and Satyalok remain as is. The aspects of God
responsible for Creation (Brahma), Sustenance (Vishnu) and
Dissolution/Destruction (Mahesh) remain the same.
 When does it happen? This happens once in every 4.32 billion years, or
1000 cycles (paryay), or 1 day (1 kalpa) of the Principle of Creation (Brahma).
 After pralay, 4.32 million years are required for creation to materialise
and Satyayug to start. For creation to materialise, some time needs to pass.
After dissolution, the process of creation begins immediately, but it becomes
visible to the physical eye only after 4.32 million years.
4.1.2 Mahapralay (every 432 billion years)
 In every 100 days of the Principle of Creation (432 billion years) there is
a mahapralay (roughly translated as a great dissolution) that takes place.
 In mahapralay there is dissolution of the entire universe, i.e. the 7 positive
and negative regions of the universe. There is also dissolution of the aspects of
God responsible for Creation (Brahma), Sustenance (Vishnu) and
Dissolution/Destruction (Mahesh).
 Only the Supreme God Principle remains in the unmanifest form.
5. Differences between modern science's view and the spiritual
science view
Modern science maintains that the universe is over 13 billion years old
(wikipedia.com). The main reason for the difference between modern science's
view and the Knowledge received through spiritual research is the lack of sixth
sense ability (as compared to Saints) to understand the principle of Creation,
Sustenance and Destruction of the universe.
6. Miscellaneous points on the creation of the universe and
humankind
The following are some other pertinent points about the creation of the universe
obtained through spiritual research.
Q: How long did Earth take to reach its current state where it was
populated by human beings?
A: Once the universe becomes visible to the naked eye it manifests in its entirety
immediately. There was no gestation period before Earth became inhabitable
and Satyayug started.

Spiritual Reality

  • 1. Spiritual Reality - Journey Within (Compiled by: Jitendra Gajjar) Cosmic Energy The Cosmic Energy exists everywhere in the Cosmos. It is the Bond between the galaxies, the planets, humans and molecules. It is the 'space' between each and everything. It is the bond, which keeps the whole cosmos in order. Cosmic Energy is the 'Life Force'. This Cosmic Energy is essential to maintain the order of our life and to expand our Consciousness. Cosmic Energy is the base for all our actions and functions. We receive some amount of Cosmic Energy in deep Sleep and in total Silence. We are using this energy for our day-to-day activities of our Mind like seeing, speaking, hearing, thinking and all actions of our Body. This limited energy gained through sleep is not sufficient for these activities. That is why we feel exhausted, tired and tensed. This leads to mental and physical stress and all kinds of illnesses.
  • 2. The only way to overcome this is to get more and more Cosmic Energy. Cosmic Energy is essential to: Maintain the order of our life To lead a healthy and happy life To totally involve in all situations we are in To obtain Knowledge And finally For expansion of our Consciousness. Abundant Cosmic Energy is obtained, only through Meditation. Meditation Meditation is the journey of our consciousness towards the Self. Sleep is unconscious Meditation Meditation is conscious sleep. We receive some amount of Cosmic Energy in sleep and in deep silence. We receive abundant Cosmic Energy in Meditation.
  • 3. Meditation is the journey of our consciousness from: Body to Mind, Mind to Intellect, Intellect to Self And beyond. To do Meditation, the first thing is Posture. We may sit in any posture. Posture must be comfortable and stable. We may sit either on the floor or on a chair. Cross your legs, clasp the fingers Close your eyes gently Relax relax … Then, Observe your normal Breath Do not chant any Mantra, do not think of any God Just witness the Breath If any thoughts come, Do not go behind the thoughts, do not negate the thoughts Just come back and observe the Breath Witness the Breath Be the Breath Just Be. This is the WAY. This is the Meditation Technique. Then one reaches … No Thought and No Breath state. This is the Meditative State. By more and more Meditation, we receive abundant Cosmic Energy. With this Meditation Technique, Our Energy body gets cleansed Third Eye get activated, and further perfected
  • 4. Astral Travel happens We understand Life After Life And many more Energy Body Energy Body is the structure for the Consciousness. Energy Body forms with more than 72000 Nadis or Energy tubes which run all across the Body. We are using this Energy for our body and mind activities like seeing, speaking, hearing and physical movements and even for digestion. All these functions are totally based on the incoming Cosmic Energy.
  • 5. The inflow of Cosmic Energy is purely based on our thoughts. When we have thoughts, the inflow of Cosmic Energy is obstructed. In other words, Our thoughts are the stumbling blocks for the inflow of Cosmic Energy. When the inflow of Cosmic Energy is less, the Energy in the Energy Tubes depletes. This depletion causes Etheric Patches in the Energy Body. This Etheric Patches gradually leads to diseases in the physical body. In other words, Root cause of all diseases is the lack of Energy in the Energy Body. In Meditation, we get abundant Cosmic Energy. It flows heavily through all our Energy Tubes of Energy Body. Cosmic Energy cleanses all Etheric Patches due to its heavy flow. When Etheric Patches are cleansed, we come out of all our illness. When Energy starts flowing heavily through Bramha Randhra, we ‘feel’ heaviness in the head region or heaviness in the whole body. When Energy is cleansing the Energy Tubes, we may get itching sensation or pain in that region. Sometimes we may experience pain in various places in the physical body. For all these pains we need not take any medicines. All these pains will vanish by increasing Meditation. By intake of more and more Cosmic Energy by more and more Meditation, we come out of all physical and mental illness. Pyramid Power Pyramid is the most stable structure, which receives the highest Cosmic Energy in this Planet Earth. Pyramid forms at an angle 52 degrees 51 minutes and because of this Angle, it receives the highest Cosmic Energy.
  • 6. Pyramid can be constructed with any material. Materials make no difference in the receiving of the Cosmic Energy. Pyramid has to be aligned to perfect cardinal directions- north, south, east and west. Cosmic Energy gets accumulated at 1/3rd height from the base of the Pyramid. This place is known as King's Chamber. Cosmic Energy will be the maximum in the King's Chamber and it spreads throughout the Pyramid. A crystal fixed at the apex of the Pyramid, multiplies and distributes the Cosmic Energy throughout the Pyramid. The No Thought State or “Nirmala Sthithi” is attained three times faster if one meditates inside the Pyramid. Pyramid can be used for communication with higher frequencies. Meditation in the Pyramid helps in Healing and for all Meditation Experiences. Third Eye
  • 7. The Third Eye is a very powerful tool of the soul to 'see', to 'feel' and to 'hear' the higher frequency realities. These three functions of the soul are known as Third Eye. When the Cosmic Energy flows heavily, the Third Eye gets activated. At the time of activation of the Third Eye, we feel an itching sensation or pulling sensation at the fore head region. We start 'seeing' glimpses of various colors rotating around us. We 'see' pitch- dark color. We 'hear' murmuring sounds, sound of walking. Here, we 'feel' we are traveling in a pitch dark Tunnel, we 'feel' as if we are falling in a dark tunnel, we feel we are moving upwards in a dark tunnel towards a brilliant light, we 'feel' we are traveling towards bright light. Third Eye Perfection:
  • 8. When the Etheric Body gets sufficient Cosmic Energy by more and more Meditation, our Third Eye gets perfected. Here, we perceive crystal clear visions of this plane and other planes. In Third Eye perfection, we 'see' so many things more crystal clear than the physical visions. Third Eye Experiences makes us to know that: We can get answers for all our problems through Messages from the Masters or by 'seeing' other frequency realities or as a 'feeling'. By this: Our actions will change. Our beliefs will change. Our Understanding will change. After this Third Eye experience, we find changes in our perception of this physical plane. Astral Travel
  • 9. Astral Body is a tool of the Self to perceive other frequency realities. Astral Body is one more form of our Consciousness like our physical body. In normal condition our Consciousness is spread throughout the physical body. When we receive sufficient amount of Energy and when we 'feel' to perceive the other frequency realities, the consciousness moves in the form of Astral Body. We perceive the Astral Body experiences unconsciously in Sleep, which we call as DREAMS. One can perceive Astral Body experiences consciously in Meditation. Astral body travels beyond space and time. After Conscious Astral Experiences, we start perceiving new dimensions. In Meditation, after receiving abundant Cosmic Energy the Consciousness that is spread everywhere in the body, starts moving towards a point. While Consciousness is moving, we experience jerks in the physical body,
  • 10. rotation in the physical body. Movements may be experienced in different parts of the body or sometimes, one may experience as if the whole body is rotating. We feel as if our body is floating. We don't 'feel' the hands and legs. We 'feel' lightness of the body like feather. These are known as ASTRAL MOVEMENTS. By doing more and more Meditation, we get more and more Cosmic Energy. The Consciousness forming like an Astral Body, starts rotating very fast which causes heavy movements in physical body. After the movements, the Astral body starts coming out of the physical body with a link called Silver Chord. Silver Chord is nothing but a high vibrant consciousness which transfers the messages to physical body to astral body and vice versa. With this, we do ASTRAL TRAVEL. Astral Travel is a travel of our Consciousness to known and unknown frequencies. By doing Astral Travel we get highest knowledge and understanding of the SELF. In Astral Travel, our Astral Body can pass through all physical materials, all elements like earth, water, fire, wind and ether. Astral Body can go to all other frequency dimensions without any limitations. After coming out of the body, Meditator 'sees' his own physical body. By this he gets great understanding. He understands that he is not only the body, but he stays in the body. This is a great understanding. Everyone should experience Astral Travel. By traveling a lot
  • 11. our limitedness will vanish and we will understand that we are unlimited By this experience only, We understand that we are THE CONSCIOUSNESS. We understand that we are UNLIMITED. We understand the NEW DIMENSIONS OF LIFE. Nirvana With more and more Meditation, we will receive more Cosmic Energy. Cosmic Energy improves our involvement in what we are in. By more and more total involvement with Body-Mind-Self, We Understand IN-TOTAL about the situations. This Understanding is nothing but KNOWLEDGE. Common man will get only experience, but fails to perceive the knowledge in that situation. It is because he experiences the situation with physical understanding alone. But a Master will understand the situation in TOTAL. It is because he Knows that he is not just the Body, but he knows that he stays in the Body. He understands that the situations are for his Knowledge.
  • 12. After experiencing all meditational experiences, and implementing it in our practical life, we will get 'great understanding'. This Understanding opens up several thousands of doors which gives new dimension of perceptions in our life. Our understanding, our Perception and our Knowledge expands a lot. This leads to the expansion of our Consciousness. This is nothing but having the WISDOM. We experience this state of Wisdom in meditation, as a THOUSAND PETALLED GOLDEN LOTUS. Each and every petal is a new dimension of understanding. By perceiving more and more dimensions, we understand more and more knowledge of other existences. With this Understanding, we come to know that: There is No Death and we are Eternal Beings. We understand “what is Birth?” and “what is Death?” Life after Life - Birth and Death We are Consciousness We come to this Earth plane as a speck of Cosmic Consciousness. While coming from the source, we come with Etheric Body as a structure for the Self. We come to this Earth plane to have unique experiences. For our experiences, we select the womb, We select the parents, environment and situations. The whole design of life is known to the Self. Birth After selecting the mother, speck of consciousness enters the mother’s womb.
  • 13. After Consciousness enters into the mother’s womb, fetus gets life. The physical body takes the shape according to the Cosmic Energy in the Etheric Body and according to the Cause. Consciousness will be traveling frequently to the source till it takes first breath. After coming out from the mother’s womb, it takes its first external breath. This is known as Birth. Life From day one to age of seven. we will have awareness of the source. The mind starts taking its shape from age seven and it completely forms by age fourteen. Intellect starts its activation from the age fourteen and fully developed by the age twenty-one. From the age twenty-one to age of twenty-eight, one experiences the combination of body, mind and intellect. From the age of twenty eight, life depends on Self Knowledge. If one does not have awareness of the Self, his Consciousness lies in between body and mind.
  • 14. If one passes his life without awareness and without Understanding, Then, He passes from childhood days to youth, then to old age and finally passes away from this Earth plane without completion of his purpose of coming to this Earth plane. It is what we call Death. Even after death, layer of rigid mind with wrong understanding does not allow the Consciousness to reach the Source. Because of the wrong understanding, he creates his own Hell And Heaven and stays as a lower Astral World being. If one starts one’s life being with the Self, he will be always blissful in all given situations. Even after Death, he won’t be in the lower frequencies. He will go back to the Source. Enlightenment By obtaining The Higher Knowledge through Third Eye, Astral Travel, Knowledge of Birth and Death one will have perfect understanding of Body, Mind, Intellect, Self and Life force. By living all the time with this understanding, one starts getting much more higher understanding about the Existence of whole Creation. With this understanding one will become a MIRACULOUS CREATOR. This is what E N L I G H T E N M E N T.
  • 15. He understands that: Consciousness is the combination of Energy and Knowledge. Consciousness comes to this plane to gain more Energy and Knowledge and to Create. Then, Whatever HE speaks, it manifests! Whatever HE thinks, it manifests! Whatever HE does, it becomes a CREATION!
  • 16. 1. Introduction to what human beings are comprised of In this article we explain the composition of the human body and its various subtle bodies. Modern science has gone in some depth into understanding the physical body. However its understanding of the other aspects of human existence is still very limited. For example the understanding of the human psyche and intellect is still more or less limited to their physical aspects. However spiritual science has studied the entire human existence in great detail. 2. What are human beings comprised of as per spiritual science? A living person is made up of the following bodies. 1. The Physical Body 2. The Vital Energy Body (Praan-deha) 3. The Mental Body (Mano-deha) 4. The Intellect Body or Causal body (Kaarana-deha) 5. The Subtle Ego or Supracausal body (Mahaakaarana-deha) 6. The Soul or the God Principle in each of us (Aatma
  • 17. In the subsequent sections we will explain these various bodies in more detail.
  • 18. 3. The Physical Body This is the body that is best known to modern science. It comprises of the skeletal framework, muscles, tissues, organs, blood, 5 sense organs, etc. 4. The Vital Energy Body This is the body also known as the Praandeha. This body provides the vital, life sustaining energy for all the functions of the physical as well as the mental body. There are five types of vital energies or praana:  Praana: Energy for the activity of inhalation. At the time of death the vital energy is released back into the Universe and also helps in propelling the subtle body in its onward journey. 5. The Mental Body or the Mind The Mental Body (Manodeha) or the Mind is the seat of our feelings, emotions and desires. It carries in it countless number of impressions from this life and previous lives. It is made up of three parts:  The conscious mind: It is that part of our thoughts and feelings that we are aware of.  The sub-conscious mind: It contains all the impressions required to complete our destiny (praarabdha) in our current lifetime. Thoughts from the sub-conscious mind sometimes emerge into the conscious mind from time to time either in response to some external stimulus or at time even without it. For example during the course of one’s day one gets a random and unrelated thought about some vague incident in one’s childhood.  The unconscious mind: This is the aspect of our mind that we are completely unaware of. This contains all the impressions that are associated with our accumulated account.
  • 19. The sub-conscious mind and unconscious mind together are known as the Chitta. Sometimes we also refer to an aspect of the Mental Body as the Desires Body or Vaasanaadeha. This is the aspect of the mind that contains all the impressions of desires. Please refer to the article on ‘Why we do the things we do’ as well as the e- tutorial of the same name to understand the functional structure of the mind. The physical organ associated with the Mental Body is the brain. 6. The Intellect The Causal Body (Kaaranadeha) or the Intellect Body is the body which deals with the decision making process and reasoning ability. The physical organ associated with the Intellect Body is the brain. 7. The Subtle Ego The Subtle Ego or the Supracausal Body (Mahaakaaranadeha) is the final vestige of the nescience and is the feeling that we are separate from God. 8. The Soul The Soul is the God principle within us and is our true nature. It is the main component of the subtle body which is a fraction of the Supreme God Principle with the qualities of Absolute Truth (Sat), Absolute Consciousness (Chit) and Bliss (Aanand). The Soul is unaffected by the ups and downs in life and is in a perpetual state of Bliss. It looks at the ups and downs of life in Maya or the Great Illusion with an observer stance. The Soul is beyond the 3 subtle basic components; however the rest of our consciousness like the Physical Body and the Mental Body is made up of it. 9. The Subtle Body The Subtle Body is defined as that part of our being or consciousness that leaves our Physical Body at the time of physical death. It comprises of the Mental Body, the Causal Body or Intellect, the Supracausal Body or Subtle Ego and the Soul. What is left behind at the time of physical death is our Physical Body. The Vital Energy is released back into the Universe. The following are some other aspects of the subtle body
  • 20.  Subtle sense organs: By subtle sense organs we mean the subtle aspect of our 5 sense organs by which we are able to perceive the subtle realm. For example we are able to perceive a subtle fragrance such as jasmine without their being any stimulus to cause it. Also the fragrance may only be experienced by one person and not by the others in the same room. This is explained in more detail. Also refer to our article on – What is sixth sense?  Subtle motor organs: By subtle motor organs we mean the subtle aspect of our physical motor organs such as our arms, tongue, etc. All activity is initiated first in subtle motor organs and then executed in the physical dimension by one’s gross motor organs. 10. Nescience All the other aspects of our being other than the Soul are part of Maya or the Great Illusion. It is called Nescience or Avidyaa which when literally translated means absence of knowledge. The word Nescience or Avidyaa stems from the fact that we identify ourselves with our physical body, mind and intellect and not with our true nature which is the Soul or the God principle within us.
  • 21. Nescience is the root cause of unhappiness. Man gets attached to money, his own house, family, city, country, etc. The greater the attachment to any individual or object, greater is the likelihood of unhappiness arising from attachment. Even an ideal social worker or a Saint may become attached to the society or His devotees respectively. The greatest attachment that each one has is for himself; that is his own mind and body. Even a slight discomfort or illness can make one unhappy; hence everyone should gradually become detached about oneself and accept pain and illness in one’s stride. This is of course with the inherent understanding that happiness and unhappiness in life is experienced primarily due to our destiny. Also that only by identifying with the Soul can we experience perpetual Bliss. The Soul and Nescience together constitute the embodied soul. Nescience for a living person has twenty components in all - the Physical Body, five subtle sense organs, the five subtle motor organs, the five vital energies, the conscious mind,
  • 22. the Chitta, the Intellect and the ego. Since the functions of the components of the subtle body go on continuously, the attention of the embodied soul is drawn to them instead of the soul, that is away from spiritual knowledge to Nescience. 1. Introduction to the purpose of life Every now and again, we hear the clichéd question, ‘What is the meaning of life?’ or ‘What is the purpose of life?’ or ‘Why are we born?’. In most cases, we have our own agenda on what our purpose in life is. However from a spiritual perspective, there are two generic reasons why we are born. These reasons define the purpose of our lives at the most basic level. They are:  To complete the give-and-take account we have with various people.  To make spiritual progress with the final aim of merging into God and therefore getting out of the cycle of birth and death. 2. Completing our give-and-take account Over many lifetimes, we accumulate many give-and-take accounts that are a direct result of our deeds and actions. The accounts may be positive or negative depending on the positive or negative nature of our actions. As a rule of thumb, in the current era approximately 65% of our lives are destined (not within our control) and 35% of our lives are governed by our own freewill. All major events in our life are by and large destined. These events include our birth, the family we are born into, the person (or persons) we marry, the children we have, serious illnesses and the time of our death. The happiness and pain that we give and
  • 23. receive from loved ones and acquaintances are by and large simply a case of prior give-and-take accounts directing the way relationships unravel and play out. However even our destiny in the current lifetime is just a fraction of the accumulated give-and take account that we amass over many lifetimes. In our lifetime, while we do complete our give-and-take account and destiny earmarked for this particular lifetime of ours, we also end up creating more accounts by using our willful action. This in turn finally adds up to our overall give- and-take account known as the accumulated account. As a result, we have to be born again to settle further give-and-take accounts and are stuck in the cycle of birth and death. Refer to the article on, 'Liberation from the cycle of birth and death' as it explains how we get stuck in the cycle of birth and death.
  • 24. 3. Making spiritual progress The ultimate in spiritual development in any Spiritual path is merging with God. ‘Merging with God’ means experiencing God within us and all around us and not identifying with our five senses, mind and intellect. This happens at the 100% spiritual level. Most people in today’s world are at the 20-25% spiritual level and are disinclined to any spiritual practice for spiritual development. They also heavily identify with their 5 senses, mind and intellect. This is reflected in our lives when we focus mainly on our looks or are arrogant about our intelligence or success. By spiritual practice when we grow to the spiritual level of 60% (samashti) or 70% (vyashti), we are liberated from the cycle of birth and death. After this spiritual level, we can settle whatever remaining give-and-take accounts we have from the higher subtle realms of Mahaaloka and above. Sometimes however, people above the 60% (samashti) or 70% (vyashti) spiritual level may choose to be born on Earth to guide humanity in Spirituality.
  • 25. Spiritual development is only possible through spiritual practice which conforms to the six basic principles of spiritual practice. Spiritual paths that do not conform to the six basic principles of spiritual practice lead to stagnation in an individual’s spiritual development. Refer to the article on The importance of the earth plane in being able to do spiritual practice compared to other spiritual realms such as heaven and hell. 4. What does this mean in terms of our life goals? Most of us have our own life goals. They may include becoming a doctor, being rich and famous or representing one’s country in a certain field. Whatever the goal is for the vast majority of us, more often than not, it is predominantly a worldly one. Our entire education system is set up to help us pursue these worldly goals. As parents too, we instill the same worldly purpose in our children by encouraging them to study and enter professions that give them more benefits monetarily as compared with one’s own profession.
  • 26. One may ask, “How does having these worldly goals reconcile with the spiritual purpose of life and the reason for our birth on Earth?” The answer is quite simple. We strive for worldly goals primarily to achieve satisfaction and happiness. The pursuit of the elusive ‘superlative and lasting happiness’ is intrinsically what drives all our actions. However even after we accomplish our worldly goals, the resultant happiness and satisfaction is short lived, we then search for the next dream to chase. ‘Superlative and lasting happiness’ can only be attained through spiritual practice which conforms to the six basic principles of spiritual practice. The highest form of happiness which is Bliss is an aspect of God. When we merge into Him we too experience perpetual Bliss. This does not mean that we have to give up what we are doing and just focus on spiritual practice. What it does mean is that only by introducing spiritual practice in conjunction with worldly life are we likely to experience superlative and lasting happiness. The benefits of spiritual practice have been discussed in detail in our section on ‘Spiritual research for lasting happiness’. In short, the more our life goals are in line with the intent of spiritual development, the more rich our lives become and the less pain we experience from life. The following is an example of how our perspective in life changes as we develop and mature spiritually.
  • 27. 5. What is wrong with being born again and again? Sometimes people think, “What is wrong in being born again and again?” As we go deeper into Kaliyuga (the Era of Strife), the current era of the Universe, life will be mostly riddled with problems and pain. Spiritual research has shown that worldwide, the average human being is happy only 30% of the time while 40% of the time he is unhappy. The remaining 30% of the time a person is in a neutral state where he does not experience happiness or unhappiness. For example, when one is walking on the road or doing some mundane task etc. and not having happy or unhappy thoughts. The primary reason for this is because most people are at a lower spiritual level. Therefore our decisions and actions quite often give others pain or end up increasing the raja and tama in the environment. As a result, we end up accumulating negative karma or give-and-take accounts. Therefore for most of humanity our subsequent births will be more painful than our current. While the world has made giant steps in economic, scientific and technical progress, we are poorer than previous generations in terms of happiness which is our most basic objective in life. Given that all of us want happiness; rebirth and future lives will not give us the superlative and lasting happiness we desire. Only spiritual evolvement and merging into God will provide us with sustainable and lasting happiness.
  • 28. 1. About spiritual level The Spiritual Science Research Foundation (SSRF) uses the term ‘spiritual level’ to describe a person’s spiritual maturity or spiritual capacity. It acts as a scale to define spiritual growth and gives perspective on where we are in our spiritual journey. The higher one’s spiritual level the greater is the amount of God principle manifest in that individual. 2. The scale of spiritual level The SSRF uses a scale between 1 and 100% to describe spiritual level. 1% would refer to the spiritual level of an inanimate object, while 100% would refer to the pinnacle of spiritual growth for a person, which is Self-Realisation or being one with God. The majority of people in the current era, which is Kaliyuga, also known as the Era of Strife, fall in the 20% spiritual level category. According to the science of Spirituality, a person who is above the 70% spiritual level is known as a Saint. Just as we have people who are at the top of their fields in the material world, so also, in Spirituality, the Saints who live on Earth are the authorities. They are not just scholars, but practitioners of the science of Spirituality in day-to-day life and are God-realised souls. Those Saints active in teaching Spirituality and nurturing seekers to grow spiritually are known as Gurus. Less than 10% of the Saints living on Earth are Gurus. Gurus are the physical form of the Teaching aspect of God and they act as beacons of spiritual knowledge in our highly materialistic world. 3. Spiritual level and spiritual practice
  • 29. 4. How can spiritual level be measured? Spiritual level cannot be measured by any modern scientific equipment, nor can it be ascertained intellectually by any person. Only a Saint or a Guru can ascertain the spiritual level of a person with the help of His highly activated sixth sense or subtle perception ability. Quite often the question is asked, “How can a Saint accurately measure a person’s spiritual level?”
  • 30. Just as the eye due to its intrinsic ability can easily differentiate between a blue object and a red object with 100% accuracy, so also a Saint with His sixth sense ability can accurately estimate a person’s spiritual level. The sixth sense enables one to be acutely aware and accurately measure the unseen world. As a rule of thumb, we have provided a scale below which will give an intellectual understanding of one’s spiritual level. With increase in one’s spiritual level, one’s attitude and perspective to life changes dramatically. For example, a person at 30% spiritual level may find it very difficult to find time in his busy schedule to attend even one spiritual discourse. The same person having the same worldly commitments, after attaining the 40% spiritual level will easily find time on a regular basis to attend spiritual discourses and regularly study spiritual texts. A person at a certain spiritual level, e.g. 30% spiritual level can only relate to a person within a few percentage points from him. For example it is very difficult for a person at the 30% spiritual level to relate to a person at the 40% spiritual level and vice versa. By the use of the intellect, it is somewhat possible to estimate that another person is slightly ahead of one spiritually; however the estimation would at best be vague. By use of the intellect it is impossible to identify whether a person is a Saint. Spiritual level is defined by a number of contributing factors. In the following points we have discussed some of the more important parameters that contribute to a person’s spiritual level and how they vary with spiritual growth.
  • 31. 5. Breakdown of the world population in present times by spiritual level
  • 32. We have used spiritual research methodology to provide a breakdown of the world population in the current era (Kaliyuga year 2006) by spiritual level based on 6.5 billion people. Benefits of spiritual practice Liberation from the cycle of birth and death According to the science of Spirituality the definition of being liberated means not being compelled to take birth again because one's destiny has been significantly reduced. Man is born repeatedly for two reasons. The first, that is, 65%, is to experience happiness and sorrow according to destiny and the second, that is 35%, to make spiritual progress so as to acquire Bliss.
  • 33. On an average if one considers the accumulated account (that is all one's accumulated merits and demerits caused due to the law of give-and-take) to consist of 100 units, then in one birth, 6 units of these are experienced as destiny. It stands to reason that a man should attain liberation within 16-17 births. But this does not happen, as while undergoing those 6 units of destiny usually an average person does not do any spiritual practice. Besides due to wilful actions the accumulated account increases by 10 units. Thus at the time of death, the accumulated account becomes 104 units and once again one gets entangled in the cycle of birth and death. By and large, everyone wants to live their life such that their next few lives will be very happy. But the aim of life is not to have happy future births, but rather to get out of the cycle of births and deaths. The reason that we are born is that we haven’t yet learnt the lessons that we were meant to learn and so just as we have to repeat a class if we fail our exams – likewise we have to be born over and over again. Being liberated from the drudgery of this unending cycle can happen in this very birth if we make an effort to grow spiritually and realise God. This is the supreme spiritual goal any man can have.
  • 34. Through spiritual practice, once a person reaches a minimum spiritual level of 60% (samashti) or 70% (vyashti) one does not have to be reborn to make further progress. Benefits of spiritual practice Bliss Bliss is a superlative state which is far above and beyond happiness. The happiness that we commonly refer to is in some way or the other related to the external world. Bliss, on the other hand, is an experience pertaining to the soul and is not related to external stimulii. In life we find that whatever makes us happy has the potential to make us unhappy. To understand this further, we have to study the media through which we can experience happiness. They are:  The five senses: These are pleasures gained through the experiences of touch, taste, sound, smell or sight. Example: A person who loves ice-cream yearns to go to the ice-cream parlour. The first ice-cream always tastes the best. As he keeps having more and more, the pleasure that he gained from the first one begins to wane until he begins to feel physically uncomfortable by the 7th or the 8th helping. Thus the pleasure gained from ice-cream could not be sustained over a period of time. We can relate this back to any object one desires in life - after our happiness from the object peaks, it begins to wane.
  • 35.  The mind: It is the part of one's thoughts that is linked with one's emotions (our emotions and thoughts are interwoven with each other – unhappy thoughts lead to unhappy feelings and vice-versa). Pleasure gained through the mind is far superior to that gained through the five senses. Example: What would be the most pleasurable emotion we could have? Probably it would be the experience of falling in love. So take the example of two people who fall in love and cannot dream of leading their lives apart from one another. Once their relationship evolves into marriage, we find that the peak of their happiness cannot be sustained. Each partner begins to see the other in a different light, and in time they find that no one can hurt them or make them angrier than the very spouse who also gives them so much joy!  The intellect: This is our decision making and reasoning ability. It allows us to experience a different kind of pleasure that is qualitatively and quantitatively superior to the happiness gained through the mind. Example: Let's take the example of a scientist who has immersed himself in research. Now, say one day he solves a riddle that has baffled humankind for centuries – of course he is elated. But what happens to his ecstasy when after a while, the applause dies down? Now he is no longer on a high – in fact he is restless, as he needs to busy himself with something new to discover. Or worse still, he could be plunged into despair when he finds that this great discovery (e.g.: the energy formula E=mc2 ) has been used for the destruction of humankind by way of the atom bomb.
  • 36. This diagram shows how the happiness that we perceive through each of the media (i.e. the 5 senses, mind, and intellect) progressively gets not only qualitatively better but also lasts for a longer duration However, when we experience Bliss from the soul, it is the most superlative quality of happiness and lasts indefinitely. Bliss cannot be verbally described and has to be experienced. To indicate the limitation of words, let's take the example of the sweetness of sugar. Is there any way we can verbally explain the sweetness of sugar to someone who has no tongue? No! We find no words that can give us the actual experience of the taste of sugar. Just as with Bliss, sweetness has to be experienced to be understood. Spiritual practice is the only means by which one can experience Bliss.
  • 37. Spiritual Practice Spirituality is to be experienced 1. Spiritual definition of ego From a spiritual perspective, ego (aham) means considering oneself to be distinct from others and God due to identification with the physical body and impressions (sanskaars) in various centres of the subtle body. In short ego is leading our life as per the thinking that our existence is limited to our 5 senses, mind, and intellect and identifying with them to various degrees. As per the science of Spirituality, our true state of existence is identification with the Soul or God-principle within us and living our day to day life with this consciousness. As the one and same God-principle exists within all, from a spiritual perspective there is unity in all Creation.
  • 38. However, depending on the level of our ego, we identify with the God-principle within us, i.e. the Soul to varying degrees. If our ego is high, we identify less with the Soul or the God-principle within us. 2. Ego from a psychological perspective In layman’s terms one can define ego as pride about oneself. Thoughts such as my body and mind, my intellect, my life, my wealth, my wife and children, I should acquire happiness, etc. arise from ego alone. Ego (ahankaar), awareness of the self (ahambhaav), pride, conceit and ‘i’ness are words related to the word ‘ego or aham’ but on a psychological plane. 3. Subtle picture of a person having ego The following is a subtle picture of a person with ego. It has been drawn by a seeker of SSRF with highly advanced sixth sense, extrasensory perception or ESP. The dark covering seen around the Soul is the ego of the person. As the ego of this person is high he does not identify with the Soul. Due to the ego a covering of black energy has collected around him. Also when one’s ego is high the flow of grace from God is blocked.
  • 39. As a result of the black energy covering coupled with the block in access to divine grace, the person’s life is impacted negatively.
  • 40. 1. God’s ego This is a state of no ego, i.e. the ego of the person is literally 0. This state is found in Saints of 100% spiritual level when they are in a completely thoughtless state, merged with God. The ‘i’ness of such a person in this state of complete communion with God, is totally merged with the God-principle, i.e. there is no ‘i’ness. Hence all tasks that happen through such a person are mere acts (kriya) not actions (karma) as they happen totally as per God’s wish. The hallmark of the mental state of such Saints is that they are in a perpetual state of Bliss even in the face of extreme adversity in their worldly lives. 2. Man’s ego Man’s ego is again broadly divided into 2 subtypes: 2.1 Pure Ego This is a state where traces of ego are seen in Saints of the highest order when they are not in complete communion with God. These Saints have just a mere awareness of one’s existence. This trace ego is required for the sustenance of body functions.  Pure ego can be understood as having the following attitudes :  Considering oneself to be distinct or separate from Brahman (God principle), that is harbouring awareness of the self through duality.  Having awareness of one’s existence.  Harbouring the spiritual emotion (bhav) that ‘I belong to others and all are mine’.
  • 41. Even this ego persists only as long as there is existence of the physical body. It ceases to exist when the Saint gives up His body (passes away). 2.2 Impure Ego This type of ego is what most of us experience. Almost all of us identify with our physical body, or feelings and emotions and feel pride in our intellect. This is due to various impressions in the centres of the subtle body like temperamental characteristics, desires, likes and dislikes, etc. Refer to the presentation on the functional structure of the mind. Depending on thoughts and emotions, this ego can be either sattvik (Sattva predominant), rajasik (Raja predominant) or tamasik (Tamapredominant).  Tamasik ego: The ego which is subtle basic Tama component predominant is called tamasik ego, e.g. believing only in one’s own capability.  Rajasik ego: Subtle basic Raja component predominant ego is called rajasik ego, e.g. constantly striving for happiness.  Sattvik ego: Ego which is predominant in the subtle basic Sattva component is called sattvik ego, e.g. ego about sacrifice is sattvik in nature. 3. Types according to the proportion of ego On a scale of 0-100%, the ego of God or Saints at 100% spiritual level, when in a state of complete communion with God, is 0%. The ego of the subtle sorcerer (mantrik) of the highest strength from the 7th region of Hell (Patal) is 100%. On this scale, the ego of an average individual is 30%. Adolf Hitler’s ego was 60%. (Please note that by ‘average individual’ we mean a person who is average spiritually. In his worldly life this individual could be a rich or poor person, a head of state or a common working class individual.) Depending on the proportion, ego can be classified as follows:
  • 43. The innumerable recorded and researched cases of past life experiences clearly point to life after death. In all the recorded cases of reincarnations, it was found that there was a variable time lag between the death of the person and his next reincarnation on Earth. So, where do we go after death till our reincarnation on Earth? Is it a single plane of existence or are there a variety of planes of existence? If so, what are the factors that decide where we go after death? In this article, we present the answers to these and other questions about this topic. These answers are obtained through spiritual research done by seekers of the Spiritual Science Research Foundation (SSRF) with highly developed sixth sense (ESP). Note: In order to understand this article better, it is recommended that you read the article on the three subtle basic components of sattva, raja and tama. 1. What happens after death? Spiritual research has shown that man is comprised of the following four basic bodies:  Physical  Mental  Causal or intellectual  Supracausal or subtle ego The picture below is a diagrammatic representation of what a human being is comprised of.
  • 44.
  • 45. When a person dies the physical body ceases to exist. However, the rest of his existence or consciousness continues. The existence of the person minus the physical body is known as the subtle body (linga deha) and it comprises of the mental, causal (intellect) and supracausal (subtle ego) bodies. This subtle body then goes to one of the 13 subtle planes of existence other than the Earth plane. 2. The 14 planes of existence in the Universe There are 14 main planes of existence in the Universe. Seven of them are positive planes of existence and seven are negative planes of existence. The seven
  • 46. negative planes of existence are commonly known as Hell (Paataal). There are numerous sub-planes within these main planes of existence. Seven positive planes of existence: The planes of existence occupied mostly by living persons and subtle bodies doing righteous deeds and engaged in spiritual practice according to the positive path of spiritual practice are known as the seven positive planes of existence or saptaloka. By positive path, we mean the orientation of spiritual practice is towards God-realisation, which is the ultimate in spiritual growth. The Earth plane is the only physical plane of existence in the Universe and is also the first plane of existence in the hierarchy of the positive planes of existence in the Universe. Seven Negative planes of existence: These are planes of existence occupied mostly by subtle bodies that have done unrighteous deeds and are engaged in spiritual practice according to the negative path. By negative path, we mean the orientation of spiritual practice is towards attaining spiritual power, e.g. supernatural powers. This spiritual power is primarily used to enhance one’s control over others or for negative purposes. Thus all subtle bodies that go to any one of the planes of existence of Hell, by virtue of their evil intentions become ghosts. Refer to the article on, ‘What is a ghost’? Sub planes of existence of Hell (Narak): Every plane of existence of Hell (Paataal) has a sub-plane known as Narak. For example, the first plane of existence of Hell
  • 47. will have within it a sub-plane that is known as the first Narak. Narak is reserved for the worst ghosts (demons, devils, negative energies, etc.) in Hell. The ghosts (demons, devils, negative energies, etc.) occupying the first Narak face more severe punishment and for a longer duration than those occupying the first plane of existence of Hell. The diagram below shows the 14 planes of existence in the Universe.
  • 48.
  • 49. An explanation behind the color scheme used  Earth is depicted reddish as it represents action (i.e. subtle basic raja component), as it is the only plane where we have the physical body to do something.  Heaven has been depicted in pink, which represents an abundance of happiness.  Yellow represents spiritual knowledge and an increase in the subtle basic sattva component. It finally becomes almost white at the highest stage, which represents the close proximity to the unmanifest God principle.  The regions of Hell are represented by darker shades to black, as there is an increase in the subtle basic tama component. What is Kundalini 1. What are the subtle energy systems in the body? The universe is sustained by God’s mere presence. According to the Path of Kundalini, God’s energy that is used in the running (i.e., creation, sustenance and destruction) of the universe is Chaitanya (Divine Consciousness). With respect to a person, this Chaitanya is known as chetanaa and it is that part of God’s energy required for the functioning of a human being. This chetanaa is of two types and, depending on its state of activity, it takes on two different names.  Active chetanaa – also known as prana-shakti or vital energy. The vital energy or prana-shakti sustains and gives energy to the physical body, mind, intellect and subtle ego. It is distributed through subtle channels known as nadis. These nadis are prevalent throughout the body and supply energy to the cells, nerves, arteries, lymph etc. Refer to the article – What are we comprised of?  Non-active chetanaa – which is known as the Kundalini. This Kundalini lies dormant in a person until activated as described in the methods below.
  • 50. The diagram below shows the distribution of the total subtle energy for vital energy and the kundalini for spiritual growth. 2. What is the Kundalini used for? The Kundalini or non-active chetanaa is used primarily for spiritual growth. It is not used for, nor does it take part in, day-to-day bodily functioning. 3. How to activate the kundalini? The Kundalini is activated through spiritual practice or spiritual transfer of energy. 3.1 Kundalini activation through spiritual practice This includes practices that come under generic spiritual paths to God such as Path of Action (Karmayoga), Path of Devotion, Path of Deliberate Rigour (Hathayoga) and Path of the Guru’s Grace (Gurukrupaayoga). The practices in the Path
  • 51. of Hathayoga include celibacy, pranayam (breathing exercises) and yogic exercises and other spiritual practices. Some people try to force the activation of the Kundalini by efforts through the Path of Deliberate Rigour (Hathayoga). However this can lead to deleterious effects. Some can even become insane from it. 3.2 Transfer of energy or shaktipat Shaktipat refers to the bestowal of spiritual energy on one person by another i.e. mainly a Guru/spiritually evolved person to His disciple. Shaktipat can be transmitted with a sacred word or mantra, or by a look, thought or touch - the last usually to the adnyaa chakra or brow chakra of the recipient. It is considered an act of grace from the Guru to a deserving disciple. This transfer of energy itself initiates the awakening of the Kundalini. After it is awakened, the rate at which the Kundalini rises is dependent on the disciple’s continuous and ever increasing efforts in spiritual practice. 3.3 Recommended way to awaken and channelise the Kundalini Whatever the spiritual path, when there is spiritual growth the Kundalini rises. SSRF recommends regular spiritual practice as per the six basic principles of spiritual practice to help activate the kundalini naturally. Here the unmanifest Guru Principle or the Teaching Principle of God itself activates the Kundalini. As it is activated by the Guru’s grace then it automatically travels upwards and transforms the seeker spiritually. On the other hand, if it is thrust upon a seeker as in shaktipat, i.e. when someone is suddenly given an excess of spiritual energy, while the experience is very engaging and can be almost addictive, only ever increasing amounts of spiritual practice both at a qualitative and quantitative level assure the continual grace of the Guru Principle that leads the Kundalini on the right path and strengthens the seeker’s faith. To better understand this let us take the help of an analogy.  Employing ones efforts in regular spiritual practice is like working hard and then amassing a fortune
  • 52.  Awakening the Kundalini by the direct transfer of energy is like being born to a billionaire where the father provides the son with instant money. Out of the two, having earned wealth (spiritual wealth) through hard earned means is always a more sustainable and a surer option for future growth. 3.4 Key aspects of the Kundalini Just as the heart is the principle centre (organ) of the circulatory system and the brain of the nervous system, similarly the subtle energy system has various centres (chakras), channels and ducts. There are 72,000 subtle channels (nadi). Of these channels, the three main subtle channels are:  Sushumna nadi, that is, the central channel that extends from base of spine to the top of the head,  Pinglaa or the surya (sun) nadi, that is, the channel that runs to the right of the sushumna nadi, and the  Ida or the chandra (moon) nadi, that is, the channel that runs to the left of the sushumna nadi.
  • 53. The vital energy is transmitted in the body through the surya (sun) nadi and the chandra (moon) nadi and the other smaller nadis. The vital energy flow alternates between the surya (sun) nadi and the chandra (moon) nadi. The Kundalini is the spiritual energy and it generally lies dormant, coiled at the base of the sushumna nadi for an average person. Through spiritual practice it begins to rise from the base of the spine through the sushumna nadi right till the top of the head. While it does so, the Kundalini activates each of the chakras along the way. As the Kundalini passes each chakra along the sushumna nadi, there is a thin subtle valve that it needs to push through at each chakra to make its onward journey upwards. As it keeps pushing through the wall there is sometimes an
  • 54. increase in the amount of spiritual energy from the sushumna nadi at that chakra. Having nowhere to go, it sometimes flows out through the surrounding subtle ducts and becomes converted intoprana-shakti or vital energy. For that period of time, the concerned person may experience a heightened activity associated with that area. For example an increase in prana-shakti or vital energy around the sacral or swaadhisthaan chakra area can produce a heightened sexual drive. As discussed earlier, the kundalini rises through spiritual practice regardless of path. However the frame of reference may change in terms of how that Path to God perceives it. For example when the kundalini passes the anaahat or heart chakra:  According to the Path of Devotion the seeker is said to have reached the manifest bhav state which is a state of manifest spiritual emotion.  However with respect to the Path of Knowledge a seeker begins to experience Chaitanya or Divine Consciousness. According to a 1985 article by David T. Eastman in Yoga Journal, some of the more common signs and symptoms of an awakened kundalini include:  Involuntary jerks, tremors or shaking  Intense heat, especially as energy is experienced passing through the chakras  Spontaneous pranayama, asanas, mudras and bandhas  Visions or sounds at times associated with a particular chakra  Intense feelings of pleasure  Emotional purgings in which particular emotions become dominant for short periods of time. Ref: Kundalini, Wikipedia.org, Sep 2010 These are effects that are more seen in shaktipat as a means of awakening the kundalini. Seekers serious about spiritual growth must be aware that while these experiences seem very tangible and attractive, they are just preliminary outcomes and experiences due to the sudden transfer of spiritual energy, and do not in any way represent the end in itself of spiritual practice or alignment with the purpose of life.
  • 55. Spiritual Remedies for Physical Illnesses
  • 56. Abstract: We know that symptoms of physical illnesses are caused by psychological factors as well as physical factors. But most of us are unaware that in a huge majority of cases,  the symptoms of our physical illnesses are caused first hand by spiritual factors alone or  spiritual factors have a big hand in aggravating the existing illness or  spiritual factors are responsible for the non-response to adequate treatment in many cases. In this article, we present the spiritual research into some physical illnesses caused by a spiritual factor, namely ghosts (demons, devils, negative energies, etc.) and the corresponding spiritual healing remedies. This is by no means an exhaustive thesis on all illnesses but is aimed to give an idea of how the various symptoms are caused by ghosts and how they can be cured by spiritual healing remedies by using the data unravelled through spiritual research. 1. Introduction All of us have experienced physical illness in some form or the other. It could be a mild symptom like a running nose or something more serious like renal stones, cancer or AIDS. In our section on spiritual causes of difficulties in life, we have explained that the root cause of problems in life (health problems included) can be physical, psychological and/or spiritual. Modern medical science, also known as Allopathy has uncovered only the physical and psychological causes of physical illnesses.

  • 58. Most of us have heard about the concepts where a person feels like they are in a tunnel and that they are moving towards the light at the end of the tunnel. This visualisation acts as an analogy which represents the feeling that the person sees a solution or a happy ending at the end of the ordeal they are going through. We decided to examine what the phrase ‘the light at the end of a tunnel’ meant from a spiritual perspective. Most often it is used spiritually in the following two instances: 1. When a ghost (demon, devil, negative energy, etc.) affects a person or a house, then quite often a spiritual authority like a priest or a medium is called in to help remedy the situation. A common spiritual technique that is used by them is to ask the distressing entity to 'go towards the light.' The entity could either be an ancestor who is earthbound and has not been able to move on or it could be a ghost. Therefore the intention of the priest or the medium in telling the entity to go towards the light is asking him to go towards God or Divinity or to higher positive planes. 2. Sometimes when people have near death experiences (NDE’s), they too have a vision of traveling through a tunnel with a light at the end of it. We investigated both these events through spiritual research to ascertain what the ‘light’ was that people could see. The following were the findings:  The Divine Light in actuality is definitely seen by people who have a genuine desire for God–realisation. Those above a spiritual level of 50% (samashti, samashṭi) or 60% (vyashti, vyashṭi) are actually able to see Divine Light either
  • 59. due to immense merits or very little ego. As they are above the 50% (samashti) or 60% (vyashti) spiritual level they don't just see the Light but also finally reach the Divine Heavenly Light. A person at a lower spiritual level, such as 40%, may see a Divine Light when they die if they had an intense desire for spiritual growth towards God- realisation. In this case, while they may see the Light, they don’t actually reach the region of Heaven.  The rest of us, at the point of death, are not able to see any light. Instead as soon as we die, ordinarily we see darkness. Even though the 'Region of the Dead (Martyalok)' that we go through immediately after death is purplish in colour, most subtle bodies journeying through it see only darkness. The reason is because the subtle body has a black covering of impressions of unsatisfied desires, personality defects, ego and in many cases a covering of black energy of ghosts. Hence it is as if they have their eyes closed and thus cannot perceive the actual colors of the Region of the Dead (Martyalok).  Those people without a genuine desire for God-realisation who see a light are in fact seeing the light generated by an illusion-creating subtle sorcerer. Subtle sorcerers, due to their high spiritual strength, can create illusions of light as well as feelings of peace and happiness radiating from the light. These illusions are created by their spiritual powers and their black energy. They use this as a mechanism to lure subtle bodies and trap them into slavery. Earthbound ancestors are generally of a lower spiritual level and with a lot of attachments and unfulfilled desires. This means that they ordinarily cannot see
  • 60. a Divine Light when they die. By telling them to go towards the light, what one is effectively doing is telling the departed ancestor to go towards the illusion creating subtle sorcerer.  The tunnel that is reportedly seen is in the Region of the Dead (Martyalok). Due to a highly activated sixth sense (ESP), seekers of SSRF have been able to see not only the tunnel but describe its details too. So what is the solution to ensure that one sees true Divine Light? The best way is to utilise one’s time on Earth in doing spiritual practice. This spiritual practice needs to conform to the six basic principles of spiritual practice else it could lead to stagnation or even deterioration in spiritual growth. Spiritual energy in the body About this section This section explores the subtle energy systems in the body namely the Kun alinī and the Vital energy. These unseen energy systems are responsible for providing the energy required for the various functions of the gross and subtle body. The subtle energy systems in the body The subtle energy systems in the body The body functions through various systems like the cirulatory system, respiratory system, digestive system etc. Similarly there is a system to provide energy to the physical as well as subtle body. The components of the subtle body are denoted by the star against it in the diagram below.
  • 61. The other systems can be seen by dissection of the physical body. But the subtle energy systems are not visible to the gross eye. Only those people with an active sixth sense can perceive it. Some people equate this subtle energy system with the nervous system but this is incorrect. Just as the heart is the principle centre (organ) of the circulatory system and the brain of the nervous system, similarly the subtle energy system has various centres. They are known as ducts (granthi) and centres (chakras). All the ducts and centres are situated in the Central Channel (Sushumna nadi). In the subsequent articles we discuss these subtle energy systems in detail. What is the relationship between awakening of the Kundalini and spiritual level? The awakening of the Kundalini and the awakening of the chakras is a process that is closely related to the spiritual level of a person. The following table, obtained though spiritual research, provides the spiritual level at which the Kundalini is awakened and travels up the Central channel awakening the various chakras. The awakening of the Kundalini starts at the 60% spiritual level. Spiritual level Awakening of the chakras 65% Muladhar-chakra 70% Swadhisṭhan-chakra 75% Manipur-chakra 80% Anahat-chakra
  • 62. 85% Vishuddha-chakra 90% Adnya-chakra 95% Sahasrar-chakra Beyond 95% Awakening of the Brahmarandra Currently, especially in the spiritual healing and new age circles, we often hear people discuss their chakras and whether some chakra is opened or closed, or indicating that the chakras need to be balanced. This is a misnomer as the chakras (as seen from the table above) do not get activated until a higher spiritual level and for the vast majority of people, they are dormant. What they are in fact referring to is the active chetana which is also known as Prana- shakti or vital energy. For example, the active chetana, which is strong in and around the heart region, in their parlance, would be incorrectly referred to as the Heart chakra being open. Sounds of the Universe We recently published a number of self-generated Divine sounds which have the ability to spiritually heal and impart spiritual experiences. Some of our readers have promptly pointed out that these Divine sounds markedly resemble sounds that come from outer space, namely, the sound of pulsars. A pulsar (portmanteau of pulsating star) is a highly magnetized, rotating neutron star that emits a beam of electromagnetic radiation.
  • 63. How does the sound of pulsars compare to the Divine Sounds that we have published? You can find out for yourself by hearing the pulsar sounds below and then listening to the Divine sounds. 1. Introduction to Divine sounds The work of Saints is for the upliftment of humankind. Their every move and thought is for the benefit of society. Due to Their presence and resolve, many people benefit spiritually. Saints think only of everyone’s benefit and this thought becomes Their resolve which then starts to work. One such Saint who works through resolve for the benefit of society is H. H. Dr. Athavale. Today, the influence of negative energies is on the rise all over the world. Negative energies create obstacles on the path of individuals who perform spiritual practice. H.H. Dr. Athavale contemplates on how to overcome these obstacles. While He was engrossed in this thought, on 23 June 2011, at 3.18 p.m. for no evident reason, a sound was heard in His room at SSRF's spiritual research centre in Ramnathi, Goa, India. Seekers from the audio-video department of the ashram recorded that sound. H.H. Dr. Athavale explained that this sound has the ability to perform spiritual healing on people suffering from distress due to negative energies. Seekers who heard it were not only relieved of their spiritual distress, but they had different spiritual experiences as well. This proved that the sound was Divine in origin. From then, until 28 November 2011, 15 different Divine sounds were heard. They came from His residential room, His study and the room where He performs satseva, the ceiling fan He uses, the air-cooler in His study-room and the refrigerator used to store His food items. All emitted various Divine Sounds at certain times. This happens due to the accumulation of Divine vibrations in objects used by, or in the near proximity of Saints. This would be akin to one getting sun tan in the presence of the Sun. Later, Divine sound was also heard in the premises used by SSRF's research centre, at Devad, near Mumbai, India.
  • 64. Thousands of seekers from all over the world have experienced the spiritual healing capability of these Divine sounds. Since H.H. Dr. Athavale had the yearning to reduce distress due to negative energies of people around the world who perform spiritual practice, God has given this invaluable gift to the entire humankind. The entire episode reveals the father-like unconditional love H.H. Dr. Athavale has for the society. 3. Divine sounds 4. Instructions for listening to the Divine sounds While listening to these Divine sounds, do pay attention to which sound causes distress or increases the existing distress, or which sound makes you feel good. That is the sound that is required for you.
  • 65. A. I do not know if I have distress due to negative energies If you have not noticed any distress in yourself until now, and suddenly feel distress after listening to the Divine sounds, it can mean that you are also under the influence of negative energies. In that case, you can listen to the Divine sound which has caused your distress to manifest. B. I know that I have distress due to negative energies. Which sound should I listen to? Those of you, who already know that you are suffering from distress due to negative energies, can listen to the Divine sound which causes most distress in you or increases your distress. B 1. How long should I listen to the Divine sound? You can listen to the distressing sound continuously until you are able to tolerate it, as spiritual healing occurs from it. B 2. What should I do if I cannot tolerate listening to it for long? If listening to a chosen Divine sound becomes intolerable, then switch to a Divine sound which makes you feel good, until your distress reduces. Thereafter, again revert to the Divine sound which causes distress. Keep repeating this cycle. Healing through Divine sounds weakens the strength of negative energy and therefore does spiritual healing on you. B 3. What if I start experiencing a different type of distress caused by negative energy? If there is a change in the type of negative energy attacking or affecting us, we may need to change the Divine Sound we need to listen to for spiritual healing. This is akin to taking a new medicine when we start suffering from a different illness. When the mode of distress caused by the negative energies changes or if a different negative energy starts causing distress, listen to all the Divine sounds all over again, decide afresh on the necessary Divine sound for yourself and use it for spiritual healing. At times, you may need to listen to a different Divine sound after just a few hours.
  • 66. C. I do not experience any distress due to negative energies, should I also listen to the Divine sounds? Those of you who do not suffer from distress due to negative energies can keep listening to a Divine sound, which makes you feel good. After some time if you experience a reduction in the benefit, listen to all the sounds all over again and decide which sound is most beneficial for you. There are sounds which enhance spiritual practice and spiritual emotion. When there is no negative energy distress, listen to these sounds. Use the Divine sounds with gratitude and reverence as they are a gift to us from God. These sounds should not be used for worldly benefits such as to overcome family problems, problems at the work place, or financial problems, because these Divine sounds will not work for these problems. Do use them for spiritual benefit only. 1. Introduction to life before birth Is this life all I have? Where do we come from before we are born? Where do I go after I die? These questions will undoubtedly be familiar to almost all of us. Some time ago, we published an article on ‘What happens after death’. Through spiritual research we will cover our life before we are born in this 2 part series of articles. The two parts are:  Part 1: The time before we are conceived  Part 2: The time we are in the womb
  • 67. The reason we have published both life before birth and life after death is because it brings to focus that we live our lives with consequences. TheLaw of Karma pervades our entire life. The life that we lead in our current birth decides the quality of our afterlife and subsequent births. Paradoxically while most people are interested in the spiritual life before birth and life after death, only a handful are interested in actually doing something about their spiritual life on Earth. This is so as to have a better afterlife and subsequent births and to ultimately get out of the cycle of birth and death. 2. Where are we before we are born? After we die on Earth, we (i.e. our respective subtle bodies) go to one of the various subtle regions of the Universe depending on our spiritual level and merits and demerits. Here we stay for varied periods of time before we get a chance to be born back on Earth. (Refer to point 2.4 for which subtle region we are most likely to go to.) 2.1 Life before birth: Regions of Heaven and above In the current times, only 2 out of every 100 of us will make it to the higher positive regions of the Universe such as Heaven (Swargaloka),Mahaaloka etc. In the higher regions of the Universe, the predominant experience is happiness and Bliss. The rest of us go to either the Nether world (Bhuvaloka) or one of the regions of Hell (Paataal). Here the predominant experience is unhappiness to extreme suffering.
  • 68.
  • 69. 2.2 Life before birth: The Nether world (Bhuvaloka) The suffering experienced in the Nether world (Bhuvaloka) is generally far more than that on the Earth plane as there is not much freewill. In the Nether world (Bhuvaloka), 10% of the subtle bodies are guided by subtle bodies from higher regions such as Heaven and Mahaaloka. These subtle bodies are those of seekers with yearning for spiritual growth. Approximately 2% are controlled completely by destiny. Approximately 88% of subtle bodies are attacked by ghosts (demons, devils, negative energies, etc.) and controlled by them. These subtle bodies are fully conscious that they are controlled by ghosts but can do little to fend them off as they do not have any spiritual strength of their own. 2.3 Life before birth: Regions of Hell (Paataal) With regards to Hell, even the worst part of one’s life on Earth is better than that experienced in the regions of Hell (Paataal). In Hell (Paataal) subtle bodies are controlled 100% by higher level negative energies. As we go to the lower rungs of Hell, the suffering and pain is only amplified. We stay in the region of Bhuvaloka for approximately 50-400 years before we are eligible for rebirth on Earth. In the case of the region of Hell, we can languish for thousands of years before we get an opportunity to be reborn. 2.4 Spiritual practice in the subtle regions The following chart shows the likelihood of the subtle region we will go to after we die in current times.
  • 70. The only thing that can alleviate the suffering in the lower subtle regions of the Universe is spiritual practice. However the likelihood of doing spiritual practice in the lower subtle regions of the Universe (i.e. Nether and Hell) is next to nil. Intense suffering compounded by attacks from higher level ghosts make the environment impossible for spiritual practice as subtle bodies switch into survival mode to combat the harshness of the environment. In the subtle region of Heaven (Swargaloka), the happiness experienced is such that subtle bodies get caught up in its experience and hardly do any spiritual practice. So while subtle bodies can theoretically do spiritual practice in Heaven (Swargaloka), the likelihood of actually doing it is minimal due to distractions of various pleasurable experiences.
  • 71. Spiritual practice can be done and actually does happen only in the higher subtle regions of Mahaaloka to Satyaloka. Subtle bodies in these regions do not have to be reborn on the Earth plane to settle their give-and-take accounts or to do spiritual practice. Life on the Earth region is of great importance as it is the only plane where people from the lower regions can be born to do spiritual practice, complete their give- and-take and get outside the cycle of birth and death. 2.5 Do we know about our previous births while in the subtle planes? The average subtle body generally remembers events only from its last birth on Earth. It does not remember births before that unless they are very notable. This is up to the time the subtle body is reborn on Earth again. Wanting to know about previous lives is not the highest item on our agenda in regions such as the Nether world or Hell. Avoiding unhappiness, fending off ghosts and the agony of being away from people that they are attached to are generally what occupy most subtle bodies in the Nether world. 2.5.1 Why do we not remember our previous births in this lifetime? As we get involved with the world, we forget our previous life in the subtle regions and on Earth. Our physical senses strongly overshadow our sixth sense and we lose our ability to perceive our previous births. It is also God’s compassion for us that He has so arranged that we forget the previous lifetimes. Just imagine how difficult it would be to go about the day to day affairs of this life remembering past life events like the past birth relationships we had with the people in our life in this birth. For example, a father and son in this life could well have been husband and wife in an earlier life. Or a present life mother could have been responsible for the death of her present life daughter in a previous lifetime. 3. Why are we born on Earth? We are born on Earth to settle our give-and-take account or Karma and to do spiritual practice. In the Nether world and Hell it is almost impossible to do spiritual practice so as to burn our give-and-take account.
  • 72. Refer to the article on the purpose of life. After the death of a person, being born on Earth again is not in the hands of the person (or rather his subtle body). Birth on the Earth plane is rare. For every entry of a subtle body into an embryo, millions of other subtle bodies compete to gain entry on Earth to experience worldly life. But it is only that subtle body that is destined to enter an embryo that will get birth on Earth. 4. What are the factors that decide when and where and to whom we are reborn on Earth The two main factors that decide our birth on Earth are: 1. Are the conditions on Earth conducive for settling our give-and-take account? 2. Which region are we in prior to our birth on Earth? 4.1 The give and take account and rebirth Our give-and-take account is the single most important factor that decides  the time period when we are born on Earth and  into which family etc. Our give-and-take account decides the time of our conception right up to the year, month, hour, minute and second. This means that we take birth on Earth during that period when it is most conducive for us to complete a maximum amount of our accumulated give-and-take account. Hence we take birth at the same time when those people with whom we have major give-and-take accounts are around and also that external circumstances on Earth are conducive too. Let us take a look at the following example case-study: Mr. A has cheated Mr. B of all his fortune. Thus Mr. A has created an adverse give- and-take account with Mr. B. If he dies without repaying this debt then he will have to be reborn to repay it and thus complete that account. Now to complete this, he will either have to be reborn immediately when Mr. B is still around or wait till such time that Mr. B is reborn. Also if Mr. A has further lived a life of fraudulent deals etc. he will have to face a life of major unhappiness in one or more of his rebirths to atone for this. Naturally he will have to be born during a period of general strife. Hence he cannot be born during relatively good times.
  • 73. An important point about the give-and-take account is that it is not maintained in terms of how much money is to be returned etc. but in terms of units of unhappiness or happiness. In the above example if Mr. A by cheating Mr. B of a certain amount of money has been responsible for 1000 units of unhappiness to Mr. B then Mr. A may be reborn as mother and Mr. B as her child. The child (Mr. B in earlier birth) is born very loving and obedient and enjoys lot of love from the mother. He then dies in a fatal accident or brief illness at the age of say 10 years. By that time the mother has become quite attached to the child and his untimely death thus causes 1000 units of unhappiness to his now mother but earlier Mr. A. The religion that we are born to takes a lesser priority as compared to the give- and-take account we have with the parents we are born to. 4.1.1 What decides which part of the accumulated account will play out as one’s destiny on Earth? Here again the same rule applies: that part of the accumulated give-and-take account will be selected based on what can be maximally settled in the impending birth. 4.1.2 Can parents attract a more advanced and saattvik subtle body before conception through spiritual practice like chanting? Yes, it is possible to attract a more advanced and more saattvik subtle body into the womb through spiritual practice. This is only possible when parents are doing a considerable amount of spiritual practice, (i.e. a minimum of 4-5 hours a day according to the six basic principles of spiritual practice including the sacrifice of body, mind and wealth to serve God). In the event of the spiritual practice by parents, suppose the first subtle body in line (according to the strength of give-and-take with the parent) to come into the womb is not that saattvik, then it will get superseded by the next most saattvik subtle body in line. Some of the characteristics ofsaattvik children are that they are well behaved, intelligent and well adjusted. There are also less chances of having physically and mentally challenged children. The reason for this is that people have challenged children due to negative destiny. Destiny is overcome through spiritual practice. If parents are doing a high amount of spiritual
  • 74. practice according to the six basic principles of spiritual practice then their negative destinies are reduced. If a Saint (i.e. a person above the 70% spiritual level) is to be born then the spiritual level of the mother needs to be at least 50-60% to be able to bear the positivity of the baby. The mother’s spiritual level holds 70% importance as opposed to the father’s spiritual level. 4.1.3 What decides if one is born to wealthy families or to parents of a higher spiritual level? If a subtle body has more merits it will generally be born in good conditions and into families that are well off. If the subtle body has an above average spiritual level, it will be born to parents that are of a higher spiritual level that will be able to nurture its spiritual growth. However Saints being born are beyond merits and demerits and can also be born into very poor families. This will depend on their mission on Earth. 4.2 Rebirth on Earth with respect to the region we are in before birth The likelihood of being born on Earth is much lower when a subtle body is in the  higher regions of the Universe such as Mahaaloka and above or  lower regions such as Hell. 4.2.1 Rebirth from regions above Mahaaloka As mentioned earlier when a subtle body attains the subtle regions of Mahaaloka and above they are beyond the 60% (samashti, samashṭi) or 70% (vyashti, vyashṭi) spiritual level. At this spiritual level they attain Mukti or liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Whatever remaining destiny they may have can be settled from the subtle region itself through spiritual practice. People beyond 60% (samashti) or 70% (vyashti) spiritual level can however get born of their own will. In Mahaaloka and Janaloka as the ‘I’ or subtle ego is still active, though minimal, the subtle bodies themselves decide when they want to be reborn as per the time conducive for their mission. Because of their high spiritual level, they are born just by their wish and they will be born to parents of a higher spiritual level. Even more spiritually evolved subtle bodies from Tapaloka decide
  • 75. both when and where they will be reborn. In fact, many such evolved subtle bodies are already born in the world to sustain the coming 1000 years of spiritual renewal. Refer to the article on Armageddon. 4.2.2 From the region of Heaven If one is in the region of Heaven, it can take approximately thousands of years to be reborn on Earth again. 4.2.3 From the regions of Hell In the lower regions of the Universe such as Hell, the time period of suffering is greatly increased. Along with this, higher level ghosts directly influence the subtle body’s existence making them do negative acts. As a result, the subtle body goes into a negative vortex of negative give-and-take which keeps them in the lower regions of Hell. It is only when a subtle body from the first three regions of Hell has completed its quota of suffering that it gets rebirth on Earth. Even then the probability of a subtle body from the first region of Hell getting reborn on Earth is only 1 in 100,000 births. The probability of rebirth from the 2nd and 3rd regions of Hell is even more negligible. The likelihood of getting birth from beyond the third region of Hell is next to nonexistent. In the approximately 350,000 births that happen on a daily basis around the world, only three subtle bodies will be from Hell, the rest will be mainly from the Netherworld and only a few from Heaven. In some rare cases a subtle body will be going through its first birth even in today’s era. As these subtle bodies have no prior give-and-take accounts, all the events in their life are due to their wilful action. Also as they do not have any fixed raja-tama impressions in their sub-conscious minds, they can use this wilful action for spiritual practice. Hence they are in the best position to achieve God- realisation in their first birth itself. 5. What is the time gap between death and rebirth on Earth? There is no fixed time interval between death and rebirth on Earth. On an average it is 50-400 years for subtle bodies from the Nether region (Bhuvaloka). Subtle
  • 76. bodies in Heaven may have to wait thousands of years before they get rebirth on Earth. It is in very rare cases that a person dies and gains immediate entry into a womb. Generally if this happens it will be just after the first trimester. Therefore one is reborn in 6 months time. The probability of this happening is 0.001% out of all births. In even rarer cases the subtle body of a person who has just died can oust some other subtle body in a 9 month old foetus and be born again immediately. In this case the subtle body ousting another would need to have a higher spiritual level and a more intense give-and-take with the family being born to. 6. When is the next birth of a person decided? The next birth is decided at the time of death in the previous life itself in the case of the majority of people. This is because most subtle bodies do not do any spiritual practice in the afterlife after their physical death. As spiritual practice is the only way to nullify the give-and-take account, for the majority of subtle bodies the give-and-take remains unchanged due to a lack of spiritual practice in the afterlife. Only in the case of evolved subtle bodies coming from the region such as Mahaaloka and Janaloka, it is decided at the time of their birth. This is because when to be born is as per their wish, i.e. they are not affected by destiny. However the subtle bodies in the lower subtle regions like the Nether region (Bhuvaloka), Heaven (Swargaloka) and regions of Hell are 100% bound by destiny. 7. How many births have we gone through? It is very difficult to give an answer that will encompass all people. The thing is we could have lived over a thousand births as humans and it could also be the first time we are being born in this current lifetime of ours. However on average the person at the 20% spiritual level in today’s’ world would have been born a number of times in the last 1000 years. The adjoining table gives one an understanding of the various types of births that a human at the 20% spiritual level could go through over a thousand year span.
  • 77. Please note this is typical of a person that has come from the Nether region (Bhuvaloka). He can be born in various forms to suffer before coming back as a human. 8. Does a person know his destiny or who he is going to be born to? A person does not know about the family he is going to be born to until the very moment of conception. Even after that there is a likelihood of it losing its place in the womb to another subtle body. At the point in time of conception they have an understanding of their give-and-take with the family they are being born into. This means they understand whether the account is positive or negative. They may also understand the nature of the reason for the account. They are however not privy to the life that is destined for them. 9. Before one is born is there any guidance from an evolved subtle body on what is expected of one? No, there is no guidance given.
  • 78. 10. What decides the sex of the baby? In the first birth the sex of the newborn is decided by God. From God’s point of view, being born as a male or female is a moot point from the perspective of realising the basic goal of life, i.e. attaining God-realisation. After the first birth, those who are born as males generally continue to be born as males if that is the predominant impression in the sub-conscious mind of the person. This happens according to the rule that ‘What we don’t know we are not interested in’. However if a person happens to have a lesbian or gay constitution that person can be born in the next birth in the sex which they have a stronger liking for. From completing ones give-and-take account point of view being male or female is of no value as the other personality characteristics remain the same like anger etc. Also getting a male birth is not necessarily a plus from a God-realisation point of view. In fact according to Spiritual science, man and woman are not superior or inferior, rather they are just one unit – Sun Channel (Surya nadi) and Moon Channel (Chandra nadi) of the Universal Spiritual Energy system (Kun alinī). However in exceptional cases like for example when a woman has taken immense beating for years from her husband and wants to repay him in the same coin by becoming the husband in another birth with the present husband being born as the wife, a reversal of sexes can happen. But again, it is not really necessary to be born as husband and wife in role reversal to undergo the above mentioned negative destiny. The present life husband can undergo the requisite units of unhappiness in other ways. 11. What decides whether an animal is reborn as a human? There is a chance of an animal being born as a human being if a human being had regressed to that animal form as punishment for his misdeeds. After the animal that was initially a human has finished its quota of suffering as an animal, it can be reborn in human form. Rituals for departed ancestors done by their descendants also help.
  • 79. It is extremely difficult for an animal (that was born as an animal to start with) to evolve to a human being as it is very difficult for an animal to do spiritual practice. However, an animal who has attained a Saint's satsang, consumed Holy sacrament (prasad), listened to Holy songs or repetition of the Name of God regularly may develop the desire for God realisation and evolve spiritually to human form. Also if an animal lives with a Saint, and the Saint makes a resolve for the animal to progress spiritually to evolve to a human form, then an animal could attain a human birth. 12. Can departed ancestors of a family interfere with a subtle body being born to the family? Departed ancestors of higher spiritual level or ancestors with the help of ghosts (demons, devils, negative energies, etc.) of higher spiritual power like maantriks etc. can interfere with a subtle body being born to the family by preventing a birth or preventing a subtle body of a particular sex, e.g. male to be born in the family. In such cases the subtle body next in the queue or with the next highest give and take takes birth instead. This action of interference by the departed ancestors is either an attention seeking action or an act of revenge etc. Refer to the article on why would my departed ancestors want to trouble me? 13. In Summary What does this article mean for us?  The things that most people chase during their lifetime, such as job, status, wealth and family have little bearing on how we do in the present life with respect to the spiritual purpose of life and none whatsoever on the afterlife. The only currency in the afterlife is our spiritual level.  Human birth on the Earth plane is very precious from a spiritual perspective. It is the only plane where we can do spiritual practice to overcome our destiny and ultimately take us out of the cycle of birth and death.  In the current era we have to wait for many centuries before we get birth on Earth. This is if we make it to the Nether region; if we go to the region of Hell the likelihood of being born again on Earth is only after thousands of years.
  • 80.  In the current era on average only 30% of us will make it to the Nether region (Bhuvaloka). The majority of us will go to one of the regions of Hell.  The current times i.e. between the years 1999-2022 the world will see a changing of mini eras in the main Era of Strife (Kaliyuga). This era is very conducive for spiritual growth wherein one year of spiritual practice is equivalent to some 50 years in any other era.  Through spiritual practice once we achieve the spiritual level of 60% (samashti) or 70% (vyashti) in this birth itself, we do not have to come back to the earth plane to settle our destiny. Spiritual research into the age of the universe and its cycles 1. Introduction In some of our articles, we have made reference to the age of the universe and its four Eras of Satyayug, Tretāyug, Dwāparyug and Kaliyug. We have received questions from our readers asking us what we define as the universe and how we reconcile the age of the universe with modern science’s view. This article is a response to those queries, where we explain the age of the universe and how old the universe is according to Divine Knowledge received through spiritual research. Note from the editorial team: As a policy SSRF publishes articles that are more practical, so that people can learn from them and improve their lives. Understanding creation is mostly a theoretical endeavour and has little to no practical value in our spiritual journey. Hence, please consider this article as simply a supplement to the articles in which we have mentioned the universe. Here we
  • 81. have shared just a few pertinent points with regard to the topic, to remove any ambiguity in the other articles that refer to the universe. 2. Definition of the universe At the outset let us define what SSRF means by the universe. SSRF defines the universe as the entire seen and unseen world. This means it includes the Earth along with the solar system, all the constellations and galaxies that we see in the sky. But this too is just a fraction of the universe. Along with this, it also includes the seven negative subtle planes of existence and the six positive subtle planes of existence as given in our article what happens after death. 3. How old is the universe To understand this section there is a basic spiritual law of creation that one should be familiar with. Everything in the universe including the universe itself, is first created, then sustained for a period of time, and finally destroyed. Creation, sustenance and dissolution of the universe and its elements are continuous processes which have been taking place since time immemorial. Through spiritual research, we have found that the entire universe has gone through many such cycles of being created, sustained and then destroyed. The partial destruction of the universe is known as pralay and we have explained this in more detail in the sections below. After the universe is created and before it is destroyed, (i.e. during the time it is sustained) it goes through many cycles. The smallest of these cycles (also known as a paryay) has 4 Eras. They are Satyayug, Tretāyug, Dwāparyug and Kaliyug. Through spiritual research, we have found that the following are the number of years each of these eras in a cycle last for:
  • 82. In the current cycle (paryay), we are approximately 5112 years into the era of Kaliyug (translated as the Era of Strife). Therefore, since the current cycle (paryay) began, we have traversed through roughly a little over 3.8 million years and we still have over 420,000 years to go. At the end ofKaliyug, there is a mini- dissolution before Satyayug starts again. The mini-dissolution is mostly about extensive destruction such as war, natural disasters, loss of life, etc. The level of destruction is fractional as compared to the dissolution of the universe which is known as pralay. One of the key differences in these Eras is the level of sāttviktā in society and the average spiritual level of humankind. The following chart shows the mode spiritual level of humankind in each Era in a cycle.
  • 83. 4. Main cycles of the universe The following are the other main cycles in time that the universe goes through: 4.1 Destruction or dissolution of the universe The following are the types of dissolution/destruction that take place in the universe periodically: 4.1.1 Pralay (every 4.32 billion years)  Pralay is translated as the dissolution of the universe.  What gets destroyed? When a pralay takes place, then the Earth plane (along with the galaxies etc.) (Bhulok), the Nether World (Bhuvalok), the 7 regions of Hell (Pātāl), and Heaven (Swargalok) get destroyed.  What remains? However, the higher positive subtle regions of Mahālok, Janalok, Tapalok and Satyalok remain as is. The aspects of God responsible for Creation (Brahma), Sustenance (Vishnu) and Dissolution/Destruction (Mahesh) remain the same.
  • 84.  When does it happen? This happens once in every 4.32 billion years, or 1000 cycles (paryay), or 1 day (1 kalpa) of the Principle of Creation (Brahma).  After pralay, 4.32 million years are required for creation to materialise and Satyayug to start. For creation to materialise, some time needs to pass. After dissolution, the process of creation begins immediately, but it becomes visible to the physical eye only after 4.32 million years. 4.1.2 Mahapralay (every 432 billion years)  In every 100 days of the Principle of Creation (432 billion years) there is a mahapralay (roughly translated as a great dissolution) that takes place.  In mahapralay there is dissolution of the entire universe, i.e. the 7 positive and negative regions of the universe. There is also dissolution of the aspects of God responsible for Creation (Brahma), Sustenance (Vishnu) and Dissolution/Destruction (Mahesh).  Only the Supreme God Principle remains in the unmanifest form. 5. Differences between modern science's view and the spiritual science view Modern science maintains that the universe is over 13 billion years old (wikipedia.com). The main reason for the difference between modern science's view and the Knowledge received through spiritual research is the lack of sixth sense ability (as compared to Saints) to understand the principle of Creation, Sustenance and Destruction of the universe. 6. Miscellaneous points on the creation of the universe and humankind The following are some other pertinent points about the creation of the universe obtained through spiritual research. Q: How long did Earth take to reach its current state where it was populated by human beings? A: Once the universe becomes visible to the naked eye it manifests in its entirety immediately. There was no gestation period before Earth became inhabitable and Satyayug started.
