Long Term Injuries In Sports
Injuries impact the school life, profession, and the approach to society of a player. It slows down the natural ability of one to obtain and accomplish
their aspirations in life, such as academics achievements or relationship goals (Dr. Echlin, 2014). Physicality and toughness are important factors in
sports, especially in hockey. In a sport that is nearing a century old, who dare prohibit the originality of it? But with prolific past injuries on players
caused by malicious hits, such as Todd Bertuzzi's infamous check on Steve Moore in '04 or superstar Sidney Crosby's year–long concussion in '10–11,
speculation has started to gather regarding the complete exertion of violence in the NHL. With over 50% of players getting injured each year and ...

In all cases, an injury that is determined long–term can very easily negatively impact a player's career. For example, "head and neck injuries, or
concussions, are the most excruciating injuries and tend to last the longest" (nationalpost.com, 2014). The long term effects can last for a long time,
causing careers and playing time for players to be cut shorter than wanted, much to the dismay of the players. In the 2010–2011 NHL season, Pittsburgh
Penguins' captain, Sidney Crosby, arguably the best player in today's game of hockey, missed 320 days also entering into the 2011
–2012 season, due to
a concussion instilled by Washington Capitals forward, Dave Steckel at the 2011 Winter Classic (Podnieks, 2011). It is also interesting to note that in
the same season as his concussion and prior to his injury, Crosby had also set an NHL record for the 11th longest point streak in NHL history,
extending up to a 25–game point streak, earning 50 points in that span–26 goals and 24 assists, and was on pace for around 120+ points by the end of
the season, until his concussion. Since then, his pace of number of points in a single season had not come close to prior to the period of time before he
got injured (Crechiolo, 2011). In other words, a player's athletic career, even one as profound and idolised as Sidney Crosby's, can be easily affected by
the possibilities of an injury because it shows that it can very quickly jeopardize or decrease the level of play one has. In the cases of prolific and
top–tier players like Crosby, or anyone involved in any injury from any sport, it is a long–term impact that threatens and jeopardizes the possibility of a
long and prosperous career, and the only way to prevent ongoing tragedies and misconduct within the league is to enforce absolute

This evidence based practice article explores the persistent concussive symptoms (symptoms lasting more than 90 days post–injury) in students from
middle school, high school, and college that obtain many sport–related concussions. The studies by Harmon et al (2013) and Doolan, Day, Maerlender,
Goforth & Brolinson (2012), found that just in the United states alone, there are over a million concussions every year and there are at least 50% of
the concussions that are not reported. One that acquires a concussion will go through neurocognitive testing, see a physician, and go through screenings
and more. Although these methods for management are being done to treat a concussion, there is not any evidence based practice to say that those
methods are actually working. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore multiple treatment options, clinical rationale, and outcomes for each
treatment. There were 24 cases a clients that were referred the Clinic at the University of Oregon for persistent concussive symptoms related to a sports

Most athletes want to decrease their risk of acquiring an injury whilst participating in sport because injuries decrease their participation time, fitness
levels & they downgrade the quality of competitive performance. Many extrinsic & intrinsic factors play a major role in the development of sport
injuries& to have an effective injury prevention programme, these have to be accounted for. Most acute sport injuries are hugely influenced by extrinsic
factors, as compared to the overuse injuries which are influenced by an interaction between extrinsic & intrinsic factors.
Primary preventative measures are the most ideal tools to monitor, rehabilitate & prevent injuries as the place specific focus on the athletes as an

The use of such protective equipment does not guarantee complete protection from injuries, however they aid in the reduction of severity of the injury
due to their shock–absorption characteristic. Bir et al. (1995) used a Hybrid III female dummy (similar in size to a ten–year–old child) to evaluate the
effectiveness of shin guards during impact forces delivered to the shin region.

Injuries Among High School and College Athletes
"What does not kill you, can only make you stronger" has become the anthem for most coaches and athletes. High school and college sports have
become the most interesting athletic league to watch. Due to the increase in demand and pressure on adolescent athletes, the injury rate has increased
extremely. There has been an increase inhigh school athletes and many of these athletes obtain some type of injury every year. There are many specific
overworked and acute injuries that high school athletes face. Also, many reasons why injuries happen and the different treatments and prevention
methods will be discussed for the diagnosis. Many people believe that success is acquired by any means possible, ... Show more content on

Most athletes never learn the proper skills to play sports safely and correctly. Coaches should teach their athletes the correct safety procedures before
sending a player out to practice or play. A common error by many parents is that safety precautions do not need to be taught until more advanced
levels of play. This mistake often increases athletes chance of dangering themselves because by the time they are at a more professional level, it is too
late to teach them proper safety regulations. Athletes make simple mistakes of doing everything incorrectly that includes using the equipment properly.
Player contact injuries represent a high level of high school sport injuries and had an increasingly higher rate this past year. In his article
Epidemiology of Exceptional Heat Illness among U.S. High School Athletes Zachary Kerr describes how intense player contact injury has increased
over the years and how football is most competitive sport with these injuries. These injuries usually take place at the ankle/foot, head/face and then the
knee. Player contact is the most natural way of injury among high school athletes, and happens to be the most difficult one to stop. In Tim McGuir's

Participating in youth sports does not always have solely positive impacts regarding a child's physical and mental health. The greatest danger sports
presents are injuries. Injuries can happen during any action throughout the day, but the risk is greatly increased by playing sports. Injuries are also the
number one concern for parents of athletes, "Nearly 9 out of 10 parents have concerns about risk of injury (87.9%), according to an EspnW/Aspen
Institute Project Play Survey of Parents on youth sports issues in 2014(Aspen)." Injuries not only can cause great damage to the athlete's body, but
the recovery can also lead to high medical costs if the injury is severe enough. "The National Center for Sports Safety reports that 3.5 million children
aged 14 years and younger receive medical care for sports–related injuries each year, and of all the sports–related injuries that are cared for in the
emergency room, two thirds involve injuries to children." With so many cases of injuries, many parents may be put off from allowing their kids to
participate in these sports. Some of the injuries sustained in youth sports can have serious injuries to youth, with head, back, and leg injuries being the
most notable.
Concussions have been discussed greatly in recent years in all over our media, as they impact both the fields of medicine and athletics prominently.

Health means both physical and mental: these are two sides of the same coin, with one more often affecting the other. Football is one of the most
popular sports played by young athletes, and it leads all other sports in the number of injuries sustained. Severe and recurrent injuries in football
players are considered to be major physical and psychosocial stressors. In common with athletes from other sports, severe or recurrent injuries may
predispose them to mental health problems in the short and long–term and to adverse psychological effects such as lower self–esteem and adverse
health behavior.

However, problematic reactions are those that either do not resolve or continue to worsen over time, or where the severity of symptoms seem
excessive and unusual. For decades, depression for example was only discussed in the shadows. Speaking about it publicly was as a sign of weakness.
But today, a light is being cast on it by all players, their families, the NFL, NCAA, and even high school teams because of life–threatening consequences
–– a point that has been magnified with recent revelations linking depression with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which is the degenerative brain
condition caused by repeated blows to the head. As high school football player Noah Seiden said when asked if the thought crosses his mind about
the fact that there is a possibility he could get seriously injured and his life could change, and if that thought held him back. And his response was

Every athlete experiences at least one injury, from something as little as a pulled muscle to something as serious to a ligament tear. As a result of sports
injuries, many star players have been sitting on the bench rather than getting into the game. A solution to this problem is a sports injury prevention
program. Sports injury prevention programs have many beneficial effects on athletes, both mentally and physically. Sports injury prevention is a
program that will help educate students about how to take care of their bodies, reduce injuries, and keeping not only themselves but others safe while
playing sports. Sports injury prevention programs should be incorporate in training because they are important not only for athletes but for coaches ...

One way that the body can be affected by infection is muscles weakness. The muscles become weak because they are not getting the energy and
nutrients needed to keep the athlete healthy. Another way that infections can affect the body, is when they cause decreased flow of fluids to the body.
This may cause athletes to feel dehydrated or light headed while performing sports. The importance of learning about personal hygiene because will
stop the spread of bacteria, especially in contact sports. What students should learn about in sports personal hygiene is to not share towels, razors, water
bottles, and equipment with each other. This can spread infections. Some ways to prevent infections are practicing to wash hands frequently and
thoroughly and taking care of the skin by taking showers daily to prevent skin infections. In sports, skin infections are spread first by skin injuries, such
as chafing, turf burns, and abrasions. When not properly taken care of, the injury can get infected and turn into skin infections. When teammates
(especially in contact sports) touch the skin injury, bacteria gets passed around which then spread the infections to other athletes, the same skin injury.
This is why athletes must make sure to have good personal hygiene is a part of their plans to keep

A Nurse's Role in Educating Parents about Sports–Related Injuries in Youth Injuries due to sports have become an increasing health problem in our
society, often resulting in lifetime injuries or even death. Participating in sports is a popular activity among many school–aged children and can be very
beneficial for a child's health. A few of the reasons parents encourage their children to play sports are to help them build self–confidence, maintain a
proper weight, promote a healthy heart, and decrease the risk of diabetes. While this type of physical activity can offer many health benefits for a
child, sports can also have negative consequences if parents are not cautious. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, "more than
2.6 million children 0–19 years old are treated in the emergency department each year for sports and recreation–related injuries" (Center for Disease
Control and Prevention, 2017). Nurses have the responsibility of providing uneducated parents information pertaining to sports safety to ensure their
child remains healthy. Although nurses can provide parents with an overwhelming amount of information, knowing how to identify signs or symptoms
of a sports injury, providing adequate nutrition, and making sure children have appropriate equipment are important topics that need to be discussed
with parents. Today, two of the most common sports–related injuries are concussions and musculoskeletal injuries. An excessive force to the

The Importance of Knowing Sports Injuries "My body could stand the crutches but my mind couldn't stand the sideline". Michael Jorden said this while

excitement preforming on the court, there is little excitement sitting hurt on the bench. Yet, pushing threw the pain is not a good preference when the
extent of the pain is unknown. Sports injuries can affect you your entire life depending on how major the injury is. With knowing the importance of

However, there are some causes that could be surprising. The most common cause of sports injuries, is the overuse of a particular muscle. Someone
may bench press 150 pounds, which is impressive, but if they don't equally work out the rest of their body, that could call for complications later on
with the legs. Also, un–organization of an event can cause sports injuries. If an event is not well planned out, there could be a number of different
dangers. For example, if a coach plans a practice in an unfamiliar building that happened to be available, and there was a leak that no one knew about,
that could cause a player to slip and fall, potentially hurting them self. Ultimately, the most common, well–known way to get hurt is to breach the rules.
Rules are there for a reason, and their is no excuse for breaking them. If they do get broken and someone gets hurt, it is in reality there fault for

A new company called Vicis is being reported on by Rick Stella in the article "Flexible football helmet absorbs hits like a car bumper, could put an end
to concussions." In the article he States that Vicis made "Dubbed the Zero1, Vicis' concussion solution is a multilayered, flexible helmet that's
particularly adept at diminishing rotational and linear impact forces. Specifically, the helmet was constructed to utilize four separate layers which work
in perfect harmony with one another. It's top layer –the Lode Shell– absorbs impact by locally deforming a specific part of a helmet. Think of it
reacting like a bumper in a fender bender. Though the tech has existed in the auto industry for dozens of years, Vicis is the first company to bring this
strategy to a football helmet." This illustrates how the helmet works and how it will reduce the number of head injuries. (Stella April 4 2017) As well
as the fact that the helmet from Vicis is made expertly by "each layer of the Zero1 setting an incredibly balanced foundation, Vicis' Axis Fit System is
the glue that keeps everything together. After spending an extensive amount of time understanding various athlete head shapes and sizes, the company
devised an innovative, and anatomically correct, approach to sizing its helmet. Ditching the traditional convention of purely measuring head
circumference, Vicis uses a person's head length and breadth to achieve the ultimate fit. Plain and simple, a better fit assures better protection." This
proves that the helmet has expert engineering such as the expert simple head to helmet fit or the gluing of the helmet which with your head "simple is

Stress Related Sports Injuries
Physical factors are one the primary cause of injuries in sports and exercise for instance, a poor tackle in football, an awkward landing in gymnastics
or poor warm–ups in sprinting. However, psychological researchers are continuing to show that thoughts, perceptions and aspects of personality may
be linked to the incidence of injury.
Stress and athletic injury
Past research has seen the relationship between athletic injuries and psychological factors as essentially stress–related (1). In this sense, stress is
predicted to produce increased state anxiety and consequently alterations in attentional focus and muscular tension. It is important to note that stress
does not exist outside the individual " not all people respond negatively to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite this, the research findings to date are difficult to interpret due to inconsistencies, with the relationship between personality and injury remaining
unclear. It would seem unlikely that a personality profile that characterizes 'injury–prone ' athletes actually exists (4), although some studies have
identified patterns/trends that appear to warrant further investigation.
One recent study identified injured college gymnasts as possessing emotional instability, emotional disturbance, stress proneness and lack of
self–control (5). This finding appears to support the stress–injury model previously discussed. Other research has shown a readiness to take risks (lack
of caution, spirit of adventure) as characteristic of injured athletes, although this is not sufficient to establish a causal relationship between such traits
and injury. The relationship between personality and injury should be viewed with caution. Some recent reviewers (6) emphasizes that personality
characteristics appear to either buffer or exacerbate the stress response " which is proposed to be the mechanism linked to injury. If personality is
linked to injury (which is at present unclear) it is likely through indirect means.
Attitudes and injury:
In work with injured athletes, some sport and exercise psychologists have proposed that certain attitudes might predispose athletes to injury (7).

Many sports involve the use of repetitive motions, and these motions can lead to injuries. This is due to the imbalance created when certain muscles are
much stronger than others, and this triggers overuse injuries. When muscles are overworked, they tend to become tight. The body then turns to other
muscles to take over for the ones that have been stressed. Often, the muscles recruited during this process cannot handle the strain, and this is what
brings on the injury.
Yoga helps to relieve tight muscles by working muscles and joints through a wide range of motion. Each pose helps to activate small muscles that
frequently aren't used. These muscles work to support the main ones used in a sport, but don't receive as much strengthening. Yoga

duration of the course and my time as a member of the team we saw numerous different types of injuries but there were three that happened more
frequently than the others.

The most common muscle to rupture is in the group of muscles of the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is a part of the shoulder that is composed of four
muscles which keep the head of the humerus in the shoulder socket. The four muscles that make up the rotator cuff are: the supraspinatus (which is
the most common muscle to rupture), infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis. There are four levels of a rotator cuff tear: a grade one, a small
and partial tear (less than 1cm deep); a grade two, a medium and partial tear (1–3cm deep) which does not exceed one–half of the tendon thickness; a
grade three, a large but partial tear (3–5cm); and a grade four, a massive and partial or complete tear (greater than 5cm deep). The symptoms of a
rotator cuff tear are: pain at rest and at night, particularly if weight is on the affected shoulder, pain when lifting and lowering the arm or with specific
movements and a change in the range of motion. There will be weakness when lifting or rotating the affected arm with possible crepitus or crackling
sensation. Although there are multiple degrees of a rotator cuff tear, the symptoms are relatively similar with the intensity of the pain varying
throughout the extent of the injury. Unlike the previous injuries, this injury is normally treated with surgery. Whether the

The most common sport related injuries are strains and sprains. Sprains are injuries to ligaments, and strains are injuries to muscle fibers or tendons.
What causes sports injury is most often times the failure to warm–up properly. It is significantly important to warm–up sufficiently before beginning
strenuous activity. The most susceptible to sportsinjury are professional and competitive athletes, whose training is intense, for they are more
vulnerable to injury through overuse of certain muscles. While it's not possible to prevent all injuries that occur, research has shown that it's possible to
lower injury rates by as much as 25% if proper precautions are addressed.
Tips:
Don't overtrain and try to avoid training errors

Doctors recommend at least 24–48 hours for muscles to recover after a strenuous workout. The proper amount of rest differs among individuals. Some
general guidelines to consider are: larger muscles heal more slowly, smaller muscles repair themselves fast. Fast or explosive movements (ex): tennis,
skiing, weight–training, sprinting... require more recovery time then slow movements such as (ex): biking, jogging, etc.
Women generally require more recovery time than men, as do older individuals compared to millennials. If you are noticing persistent muscle aches
and pains, changes in sleep or mood patterns, or an increased incidence of injuries, you are definitely overtraining! In this situation, allow your body to
recover. Rest days may vary from 3–5 days to up to 4–5 weeks, or even longer depending on your condition. If you do proper modifications in your

athlete does not specialize in one sport at the same position, and they can understand the fundamentals of the game. Those are a few ways how injuries
can be prevented. Here is more insight on how those strategies can prevent injuries. First, the young athletes can condition. According to "When
Safety Is The Name of the Game" being out of shape, which is a real problem for many kids, increases the risk of injury. The athletes that only play one
sport need to start preparing before their season arrives. If an athlete is in shape and has been working out, it will reduce the risk of injuries.

However, determining who is responsible for sports injuries can be a difficult process given the nature of sports and its inherent unpredictability. Most

Kid's Sports and Related Injuries
Sports related injuries amongst children are high, but most of the injuries can be prevented. When children enter a sport their bodies need to be
properly conditioned to endure the rigor of the sport. Also having the proper amount of rest time for injuries is crucial; children need time to fully heal
before they are allowed to continue on with their sport. Majority of parents and coaches want to see young athletes be successful. Most young children
are impressionable and often want to please the adults surrounding them, so it is prominent that the adults do not push the child too much. The safety
of young children is prominent when it comes to their involvement in sports, and with a combination of conditioning, rest, and support safety can be
achieved. If a child is properly conditioned for his or her sport of choice, then he or she will be less likely to have an injury. Conditioning is very
important when becoming a part of a sports team. Conditioning introduces the rigor of the sport and basic skills that are pertinent to one's safety.
Although attending conditioning is not always a requirement to try out for a sport's team, it should be. Even though an athlete's athleticism alone
might be enough for them to qualify for the team, it is not enough to stop him or her from acquiring an injury. I have attended many conditionings for
sports, and injury prevention was a major topic at every one. If coaches make it a requirement that all potential players attend conditioning,

Sports Cause Injuries
Playing sports can cause injuries. That is why players wear special shoes, shoulder pads, knee pads, helmets, and other protective gear before starting
a game. Sports goggles are another piece of protective gear that players should be donning before a game. They protect the eyes and help a player see
more clearly.
Sports goggles come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials. How do you find the right goggles for your sport?
Tips for Selecting Sports Goggles
Regular corrective lenses, sunglasses, and industrial safety glasses are not substitutes for sports goggles. They are not made to take the rigors of a
sport. Dress eyeglass frames can break on impact potentially causing injury.

It is highly impact resistant and can protect the eyes against fast moving objects. It also offers ultraviolet protection which is imperative for outdoor
sports.
All sports lenses should have an anti–scratch coating. It is very easy for untreated polycarbonate lenses to get scratched, even with normal use. The
anti–scratch coating extends the lenses life and keeps the wearer seeing cleaning.
Select a tinting that is appropriate to your sport. For example, if you are going to be doing winter or water sports, UV protection is critical to avoid
reflected sunlight from burning your eye's corneas. Yellow lenses are great for tennis players who need to see the ball against a blue sky. Amber lenses
filter out blue light making baseballs contrast against a bright sky.
If you need corrective lenses, make sure the goggles you select can accommodate your prescription. Most sports goggles are designed to take both
prescription and non–prescription lenses. But, it never hurts to check.
Fit is critical when it comes to sports goggles. You will need the goggles to stay in place when you are at your most active. Try a number of goggle
frames to ensure you find one that is comfortable and that offers you the right

What Is A Sports Injury?
A sports injury can be described as just an injury you get while playing sports. A sports injury could be just a sprained ankle, hamstring pull, shin
splints, acl tear and a groin pull. Of course there are a lot more types of sports injuries that can be specified but those are just some of the more common
injuries, the most common injuries that occur in sports would be strains and sprains (Hoffman, 2005).
Who Gets Sports Injuries? Anyone can get an injury in general, but if you participate in sports, every day that you play or practice your sport or sports
you have that chance of getting a sports injury.
What are the different types of sports injuries and how do they occur? There are twenty–three different sports injuries. the first one on the list would be
an achilles tendon injury. The achilles is the biggest tendon in your body, it is very common for this tendon to get injured. The tendon gets injured in

Overuse Injuries In Sports
Playing sports is a privilege not a must. Some kids are being forced to play a certain sport as children so that they would be good at it when they get
older. This forces students to play a certain sport and increase the chance of overuse injuries. Their overuse injuries are caused by too much activity on
a single joint or body part. Even though sports are fun, this is ruining a player's chance of success in the future because person's body is not meant for
constant activity. Coaches are urging athletes to push through to play the best they can no matter what. Players are pushed to be the best that they can
be. Coaches push them and this is a problem. Athletes are getting injured because they push themselves too hard. According to Michelle

Sports-Related Injury In High School Sports
BOOM! My head slams into the glass. Then suddenly I feel weak as I fall down to the ice. As I look up, my coach appears next to me asking me if
I'm okay. At that very moment I feel lost as I can barely think, laying in pain on the ice. I'm sure that this is not the only story of someone getting
injured in sports nowadays. The reason I say this is because, all sports and at any age are becoming too intense. It's not always the people playing the
sports either. I have experienced and witnessed it all myself.
As sports get more and more intense over the years, the injuries become more intense as well. Also with the fact that the number of injuries in sports is
on the rise. With up to 20 to 30 million kids playing sports each year, more than 4 million are reporting sports–related injuries. From these
sports–related injuries, millions of them could have lasting affects on young bodies. To add on to this, about 175,000 kids are treated for concussions

The Effects Of Sports Injuries On Sports
All around the world, people are participating in sports for various reasons, such as for their personal interest, health and fitness, and many more.
However, injuries in sports which can result in pain, loss of playing time, as well as medical expenditure can occur too often. In the more serious cases,
the injuries may result in fractures of bones, which in turns cause limitation in the mobility, resulting in permanent cease of attendance in sports, and in
limited extreme cases even death. For professional sports player, absence of a game due to unfortunate injuries may result in huge economic losses. As
a result of these undesired events, scientists and medical professions are constantly on the lookout of new and improved ways to prevent and reduce
the possibilities of sports injuries (Fong, Hong, Chan, Yung, & Chan, 2007). Injuries to theankle are one of the most common injuries occurring in
sports. The ankle joint may become unstable following an ankle sprain, and normally it requires a long time before it can be restore to its full potential.
The management and prevention of the injuries become the crucial parts during the recovery process.

Injuries are a crucial issue throughout the sports world and affect most players futures. Athletes are concerned of getting severely hurt or having their
lives be at risk. Many players have the chance to prevent their injuries, but yet they never do. Families must discuss with the athlete about whether it is
safe and enforce the rules to stop injuries such as concussions. More protection could also be worn to prevent broken bones or worse and also stretching
to strengthen muscles. Injuries have increased a tremendous amount throughout the years because many players have stopped wearing the correct
amount of protection and taking care of themselves.

football, than they should be able to with the exception of whether the guardian can afford it. "Parents must also take into account why their child
wants to play football. Is it for their fun or for the fun of the parent"(UWIRE 1)? Rules should also be enforced which causes players to think about
their actions and if they do hurt a player, there is a consequence. In addition, parents do have somewhat of a say and can have a discussion about the

Long Term Injuries In Sports

  • 1. Long Term Injuries In Sports Injuries impact the school life, profession, and the approach to society of a player. It slows down the natural ability of one to obtain and accomplish their aspirations in life, such as academics achievements or relationship goals (Dr. Echlin, 2014). Physicality and toughness are important factors in sports, especially in hockey. In a sport that is nearing a century old, who dare prohibit the originality of it? But with prolific past injuries on players caused by malicious hits, such as Todd Bertuzzi's infamous check on Steve Moore in '04 or superstar Sidney Crosby's year–long concussion in '10–11, speculation has started to gather regarding the complete exertion of violence in the NHL. With over 50% of players getting injured each year and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In all cases, an injury that is determined long–term can very easily negatively impact a player's career. For example, "head and neck injuries, or concussions, are the most excruciating injuries and tend to last the longest" (nationalpost.com, 2014). The long term effects can last for a long time, causing careers and playing time for players to be cut shorter than wanted, much to the dismay of the players. In the 2010–2011 NHL season, Pittsburgh Penguins' captain, Sidney Crosby, arguably the best player in today's game of hockey, missed 320 days also entering into the 2011 –2012 season, due to a concussion instilled by Washington Capitals forward, Dave Steckel at the 2011 Winter Classic (Podnieks, 2011). It is also interesting to note that in the same season as his concussion and prior to his injury, Crosby had also set an NHL record for the 11th longest point streak in NHL history, extending up to a 25–game point streak, earning 50 points in that span–26 goals and 24 assists, and was on pace for around 120+ points by the end of the season, until his concussion. Since then, his pace of number of points in a single season had not come close to prior to the period of time before he got injured (Crechiolo, 2011). In other words, a player's athletic career, even one as profound and idolised as Sidney Crosby's, can be easily affected by the possibilities of an injury because it shows that it can very quickly jeopardize or decrease the level of play one has. In the cases of prolific and top–tier players like Crosby, or anyone involved in any injury from any sport, it is a long–term impact that threatens and jeopardizes the possibility of a long and prosperous career, and the only way to prevent ongoing tragedies and misconduct within the league is to enforce absolute ... • 2. Sports Injury Paper This evidence based practice article explores the persistent concussive symptoms (symptoms lasting more than 90 days post–injury) in students from middle school, high school, and college that obtain many sport–related concussions. The studies by Harmon et al (2013) and Doolan, Day, Maerlender, Goforth & Brolinson (2012), found that just in the United states alone, there are over a million concussions every year and there are at least 50% of the concussions that are not reported. One that acquires a concussion will go through neurocognitive testing, see a physician, and go through screenings and more. Although these methods for management are being done to treat a concussion, there is not any evidence based practice to say that those methods are actually working. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore multiple treatment options, clinical rationale, and outcomes for each treatment. There were 24 cases a clients that were referred the Clinic at the University of Oregon for persistent concussive symptoms related to a sports injury. There were 14 women and 10... Sport Injury Essay Most athletes want to decrease their risk of acquiring an injury whilst participating in sport because injuries decrease their participation time, fitness levels & they downgrade the quality of competitive performance. Many extrinsic & intrinsic factors play a major role in the development of sport injuries& to have an effective injury prevention programme, these have to be accounted for. Most acute sport injuries are hugely influenced by extrinsic factors, as compared to the overuse injuries which are influenced by an interaction between extrinsic & intrinsic factors. Coaches should teach their athletes the correct safety procedures before sending a player out to practice or play. A common error by many parents is that safety precautions do not need to be taught until more advanced levels of play. This mistake often increases athletes chance of dangering themselves because by the time they are at a more professional level, it is too late to teach them proper safety regulations. Athletes make simple mistakes of doing everything incorrectly that includes using the equipment properly. Player contact injuries represent a high level of high school sport injuries and had an increasingly higher rate this past year. In his article Epidemiology of Exceptional Heat Illness among U.S. High School Athletes Zachary Kerr describes how intense player contact injury has increased over the years and how football is most competitive sport with these injuries. These injuries usually take place at the ankle/foot, head/face and then the knee. The greatest danger sports presents are injuries. Injuries can happen during any action throughout the day, but the risk is greatly increased by playing sports. Injuries are also the number one concern for parents of athletes, "Nearly 9 out of 10 parents have concerns about risk of injury (87.9%), according to an EspnW/Aspen Institute Project Play Survey of Parents on youth sports issues in 2014(Aspen)." Injuries not only can cause great damage to the athlete's body, but the recovery can also lead to high medical costs if the injury is severe enough. "The National Center for Sports Safety reports that 3.5 million children aged 14 years and younger receive medical care for sports–related injuries each year, and of all the sports–related injuries that are cared for in the emergency room, two thirds involve injuries to children." With so many cases of injuries, many parents may be put off from allowing their kids to participate in these sports. Some of the injuries sustained in youth sports can have serious injuries to youth, with head, back, and leg injuries being the most notable. Football is one of the most popular sports played by young athletes, and it leads all other sports in the number of injuries sustained. Severe and recurrent injuries in football players are considered to be major physical and psychosocial stressors. In common with athletes from other sports, severe or recurrent injuries may predispose them to mental health problems in the short and long–term and to adverse psychological effects such as lower self–esteem and adverse health behavior. But today, a light is being cast on it by all players, their families, the NFL, NCAA, and even high school teams because of life–threatening consequences –– a point that has been magnified with recent revelations linking depression with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which is the degenerative brain condition caused by repeated blows to the head. As high school football player Noah Seiden said when asked if the thought crosses his mind about the fact that there is a possibility he could get seriously injured and his life could change, and if that thought held him back. A few of the reasons parents encourage their children to play sports are to help them build self–confidence, maintain a proper weight, promote a healthy heart, and decrease the risk of diabetes. Specifically, the helmet was constructed to utilize four separate layers which work in perfect harmony with one another. It's top layer –the Lode Shell– absorbs impact by locally deforming a specific part of a helmet. Think of it reacting like a bumper in a fender bender. Though the tech has existed in the auto industry for dozens of years, Vicis is the first company to bring this strategy to a football helmet." This illustrates how the helmet works and how it will reduce the number of head injuries. Despite this, the research findings to date are difficult to interpret due to inconsistencies, with the relationship between personality and injury remaining unclear. It would seem unlikely that a personality profile that characterizes 'injury–prone ' athletes actually exists (4), although some studies have identified patterns/trends that appear to warrant further investigation. One recent study identified injured college gymnasts as possessing emotional instability, emotional disturbance, stress proneness and lack of self–control (5). This finding appears to support the stress–injury model previously discussed. Other research has shown a readiness to take risks (lack of caution, spirit of adventure) as characteristic of injured athletes, although this is not sufficient to establish a causal relationship between such traits and injury. The relationship between personality and injury should be viewed with caution. Some recent reviewers (6) emphasizes that personality characteristics appear to either buffer or exacerbate the stress response " which is proposed to be the mechanism linked to injury. If personality is linked to injury (which is at present unclear) it is likely through indirect means. Attitudes and injury: In work with injured athletes, some sport and exercise psychologists have proposed that certain attitudes might predispose athletes to injury (7). According to this ... • 19. Sport Injury Research Paper Many sports involve the use of repetitive motions, and these motions can lead to injuries. This is due to the imbalance created when certain muscles are much stronger than others, and this triggers overuse injuries. When muscles are overworked, they tend to become tight. The body then turns to other muscles to take over for the ones that have been stressed. Often, the muscles recruited during this process cannot handle the strain, and this is what brings on the injury. Yoga helps to relieve tight muscles by working muscles and joints through a wide range of motion. Each pose helps to activate small muscles that frequently aren't used. These muscles work to support the main ones used in a sport, but don't receive as much strengthening. Yoga ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
