Food Waste and Hunger Platform Matches Excess Food with Those in Need
1.
2. Every day, 263 million pounds of food are
wasted, while 50 million Americans don’t
know where their next meal will come
from.
3. The Problem
Retailers, Restaurants,
Companies, Individuals
• Have excess consumable
food that is perishable
• Don’t have enough space to
store their excess
• Cannot find an organization
to accept the food in a timely
manner
• Don’t have time to gather
information required to
receive full tax deduction (if
they do donate)
Homeless Shelters, Human
Service Organizations
• Have a shortage of food to
give out and a tight budget
• Have specific needs
(particular times they need
food and amounts they
need)
• Don’t have a reliable way of
knowing about excess food
that becomes available near
them
4. A platform that streamlines connections between
those with excess food and those in need of food.
The Solution
5. 1. Post: A food donation is posted &
sent to our online marketplace
How it Works
6. How it Works
2. Claim: Nearby human
service organizations are
alerted about the donation
and claim it if they need it
8. How it Works
4. Confirm: A thank-you message and confirmation is
sent to the donor, along with a picture of the people who
were fed.
The donor then has the option to purchase a tax-deductible
receipt, which supplies all the information needed for a
charitable tax deduction.
9. How We Will Make Money
• Corporations that donate food to a 501(c)3 can get a tax deduction equal
to the lesser of ½ the gross profit (loss) or base cost of the donated food
from their taxable income (IRC Section 170).
• If every day we were to recover just one tenth of a percent of the 263
million pounds of food wasted daily (263,000 pounds) and assume the
minimum average basis cost of the food is $1.66 per pound (lowest
market value determined by Feeding America) we would be helping
companies save a net of $436,580 per day.
• By taking a 15% cut of these savings, we can generate $65,487 in
revenue per day, or $23.9 million per year.

Editor's Notes
We make money by enabling companies to tell the world/their customers that they are feeding hungry people and they benefit from the CSR/PR opportunity and save money from doing it (both because of costs averted and dollars saved from tax deductions)Municipalities (zero food waste goal achieved), carbon credit, tax credit, donees get better food, Waste management softwareFeeding Forward’s venture model is designed to provide value for food service businesses in ways that incentivize a sustainable stream of food and monetary donations. Through donating food and money, businesses will be able to write off tax expenses. Federal tax regulations allow businesses to write off up to twice the cost of ingredients and labor used to prepare their food if it is donated. Businesses will also save money by incurring less waste removal and landfill costs.Businesses will also have the option to pay a fee to leverage our brand in their advertising to communicate to consumers that they are dedicated to sustainability and social responsibility. To recognize the food biggest donors, special achievement badges will be awarded. These badges will represent milestones in amounts of food donated, and businesses will proudly display them in their promotional materials across every marketing channel. As an additional benefit for businesses paying to leverage our brand, we will provide detailed reports of their food and monetary donations for easy accounting and tax write-offs. As an additional source of revenue for Feeding Forward, businesses will be able to pay for banner ad space on our website and on the packaging used to transport food donations when they donate. Feeding Forward’s certification and branding will gain momentum as more and more restaurants choose to participate, and consumers begin to recognize the seal (much like LEED Certification for structures or Forest Service Certification for paper products). Our tentative revenue streams include:Corporate Philanthropy: By engaging corporates in the US industry we intend to give back to the community by highlighting the best aspects of our supporters and their pledge for a sustainable future. Fee Income: In processing waste for large corporates and small businesses alike, we are helping them save and give back to their surroundings. A part of this can be diverted into our revenue generation as a fee. Capital Campaigning: Through fundraising for specific events and landmarks, we aim to raise both money as well as awareness for our situation.Government Funding: Waste reduction is a large externatility that we aim to both educate governments about as well as gain their support for Feeding Forward. Do professional sports stadiums and charge them a fee (Rock and Wrap it up apparently already does the pro sports leagues)Window stickers and a certification systemCharging K-12 districts, hospitals, nursing homes, etc.Celebrity/Politician Dinner --> eat leftover food, charge $20/ticket, hold the event a few times per yearSell curriculum on food waste to culinary schoolsConsulting
