Golf
Respect other Golfers Before you swing, make sure everyone is far enough away from the range of the club. Give other golfers enough space to swing, as well. Be quiet during others’ shots. Even if no one in your group is hitting at the moment, you should keep your volume down—golfers in other groups might still be close enough to get distracted by your noise. Golf Etiquette
Respect Yourself Don’t let your temper get the best of you. Avoid throwing, slamming, or breaking clubs, and don’t yell unless warning, “Fore!” Wear appropriate clothing. Some golf courses have strict dress codes, and others let you play in sandals. Either way, golf has always been a sport represented by its players, so make sure you take that into consideration. Play fair. If you decide to play by the rules, be honest and hold yourself to the sport’s honor code. If you’re playing with some close buddies and no one really cares if you kick your ball from the heavy stuff to the fairway, just make sure everyone’s on the same page.
Tee Area: This is where play begins. The golf ball may be placed on a tee for the first shot of the hole. Fairway: The main area between the tee and the green. The grass is cut shorter on the fairway to allow for easier shots. Golfers try to keep the ball in the bounds of the fairway when they are between the tee and the green. Green: This is the area where the hole is located. The grass on the green is cut short and greens are very smooth to allow the ball to roll when putted. Hole: The hole is a cup that is inserted into the ground. There is a flag that sticks out of the hole to allow golfers to see it from a distance. Hazards: Many holes are made more difficult with hazards like ponds and sand traps. These are to be avoided by the savvy golfer. Major Components
Birdie: One shot under par. For example, scoring a three on a par-4. Bogey: One shot over par. For example, scoring a six on a par-5. Eagle: Two shots under par. For example, scoring a three on a par-5. Double-bogey: Two shots over par. For example, scoring a five on a par-3. Terms
Cardiovascular Stimulation Any activity that leaves you slightly short of breath and works up a bit of a sweat is great for your cardiovascular system, or heart. In addition to lowering harmful cholesterol, it also helps speed up your metabolism, making weight loss easier. A round of golf burns about 300 calories in a 150 pound individual who plays for 1 hour while carrying clubs. If you choose to ride in a cart, the same round of golf will burn only 230 calories. The driving range burns about 200 calories per hour. Building Strength Weight Bearing exercises are great for your bones. Weight bearing exercises two to three times a week can create long, lean muscle mass, which helps support a strong skeleton. This type of exercise can also help prevent bone degeneration, including osteoporosis. To include weight bearing in your golf game, carry your clubs. A great option to release stress on your shoulders is a double strapped golf bag. Health Benefits of Golf
Improved Sleep Study after study has shown that regular exercise increases the positives that sleep brings. You’ll fall asleep faster and remain in a deep sleep for a longer period of time with regular exercise, which includes activities like golf. Sleep is important because it allows time for your muscles to repair themselves. Playing a round of golf by day will likely increase the quality of your restfulness by night. Find New Friends Golf is a social game. There’s plenty of time to chat with new friends and get to know new ones. Making friends increases endorphins, which helps mental outlook and an overall feeling of well being. Studies have shown that seniors that remain social and friendly live up to six years longer than those that don’t.
