Admission to the University
Students applying for admission into the freshman class must
be enrolled in, or a graduate of, a college preparatory course
of study, including a recommended curriculum of:
4 units of English
3 units of college preparatory mathematics
3 units of natural science
3 units of social science
2 units of one foreign language
1 unit of fine arts
We think relationships matter.
A close community makes learning more meaningful. Maybe
you’ve heard of the “ivory tower.” We’ve never seen one on our
campus. Our professors are both accessible and without ego.
Maybe because they are as passionate about teaching as they
are about research. Possibly because they run every classroom,
not TAs.
Perhaps it’s due to our intimate class size (25 students on aver-age).
We just think it’s easier to learn from someone you can
easily engage in conversation.
Each Capital student is individually advised by a faculty mem-ber
who helps with class selection, changing majors, intern-ships,
references and jobs.
Admission to the nursing program requires successful
completion of algebra II, biology and chemistry.
Admission to the Conservatory of Music also requires a
successfully completed audition.
Students are urged to submit their applications in the fall
of the senior year. All applications are reviewed on a space-available
basis.
Apply online at www.capital.edu and we will waive your
application fee.

Eat well.
Our dining options satisfy every type of student – from the
picky eater to the most discerning palate. Have a fresh organic
salad or a slice of pizza and fries. Stir-fry or made-from-scratch
soup. Feeling a little homesick? Parents can send in
their favorite home-cooked recipes, and we’ll choose some
to prepare for dinner (we’ll post the student’s name for all to
see, too). And, whether you prefer three square meals a day or
something more flexible, there’s an affordable meal plan that
fits your schedule.
Stay fit.
The Capital Center is a state-of-the art athletic facility where
our varsity athletes work out alongside every other student.
Do cardio on the indoor track or elliptical machines, hit the
weight room, or join a pickup game of basketball. It’s easy to
stay in shape when there’s a world-class facility that’s never too
crowded and sits right next to residence halls and classrooms.
(The only thing you need to provide is the motivation to visit.)
Study hard.
The Blackmore Library is one of the busiest places on campus
(but also the quietest). It is packed with information to
satisfy any research project and study carrels for last-minute
cramming types and those who like to stay ahead. The library’s
staff is on hand to help students navigate the stacks. You’ll
also find the Office of Information Technology here, filled with
computer-savvy people ready to help. There’s a computer
lab here (as well as in every residence hall), which means it
won’t take a thousand dollar investment just to write a paper
on Macbeth. If you have your own laptop, study outdoors
– our wireless Internet lets you tackle those tough research
assignments from anywhere on campus.

Welcome to the Neighborhood.
Our suburb is an escape from the city, but it’s only minutes away.
Bexley is one of Columbus’ most historic neighborhoods. It’s home to the governor’s
mansion. Main Street is marked with restaurants and coffee houses (like Chipotle and
Starbucks) and an independent theatre. There are tree-lined streets populated by
architecturally stunning homes.
And everything sits just steps away from the residence halls.
A Picturesque Campus.
Capital was founded in 1830, and our history shows on campus.
Mature trees line the paths that connect our impressive academic halls. Under their
branches countless spring classes have been taught, and new friendships have been
forged. Inside our gates lies our complete campus. Athletic facilities, academic and
administration buildings, and student residence halls are all interspersed. You’re
never more than a short walk from wherever you need to go.
(We think it’s how college should be.)
Capital Calls
Columbus Home.
Our city is the 16th largest in the country.
It’s Ohio’s capital. And it’s the headquarters
of many Fortune 500 companies – which
means opportunities aren’t hard to come
by. But it’s not all business. Columbus
has professional sports to watch in every
season. And an arts community that’s
unmatched. Shopping at Easton Town
Center or in the Short North is just minutes
from campus. And nearby parks, trails,
museums and a zoo, all just waiting to be
explored.

7. The Capital Center/Bernlohr Stadium
Built in 2001, The Capital Center is a 126,000-square-foot
recreational and athletics complex that includes a 2,100-seat
arena, a 3,000-seat outdoor stadium, a 51,000-square-foot
multipurpose forum, a 5,000-square-foot fitness center, and a
multitude of offices, classrooms and hospitality areas.
The 2,100-seat arena is home to the volleyball and men’s and
women’s basketball programs. The arena has a pair of hospitality
suites, a pair of broadcast booths and a camera booth with
approximately 175 chair-back stadium seats and the remaining
bleacher seating.
Football, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s
lacrosse play on a state-of-the-art, recently renovated artificial
surface called AstroPlay in the 3,000-seat Bernlohr Stadium.
Within a brick grandstand are two observation decks, a hospitality
suite and press box. The stadium includes a recently renovated
track around the field perimeter for fitness and recreation
endeavors. In 2012, a high-definition LED scoreboard was added
in the southeast corner of the stadium.
Functionality and usability are the key in the multipurpose forum,
as the infield of the NCAA regulation indoor track has four courts
with lines for basketball, volleyball and tennis. Suspended from
the ceiling is netting that can split the area into a multitude of
configurations for a variety of events, as well as a pair of hitting
cages for baseball, softball and golf. Part of the forum also
makes up 1,200 square feet of the fitness center with a complete
cardiovascular area, filled with treadmills, Stairmasters and a
universal unit. The remaining 3,800 square feet of the fitness
center is a room complete with weight training equipment from
Hammer Strength.
The health and sport sciences department calls The Capital Center
home with a complete sports medicine and athletics training
center, sports science laboratory, classrooms and more than ample
space for activity classes. The athletics department also has an
office suite with a conference room and administrative work areas.
Like many facilities, it is the small things that separate the
adequate from the memorable. The Capital Center with its
towers of brick and plaster, terrazzo flooring, hand-painted tile,
skylights and enormous walls of glass not only pays homage to the
tradition and architecture of the Bexley campus, but also provides
a functional and modern place for the university to reach new
horizons.
Capital’s vision has been simple – to have a center that is an
integral part of university life, encompassing health and wellness
activities, academic programs, intercollegiate athletics, intramural
sports, social activities and community partnerships. The Capital
Center embodies that vision and is a testament to the dedication,
values and commitment to service of the entire CAP Family. To
those past, present and future members of the CAP Family we only
have one thing to say – Welcome Home.

8. Inside The Capital Center
Basketball games on campus are an experience,
especially after Capital University opened the state-of-
the-art Capital Center in the fall of 2001. Capital
has traditionally ranked among the leaders in home
attendance in all of NCAA Division III. Capital has a
133-36 home record since moving into The Capital
Center.
The Capital Center arena features 2,100 seats, two
furnished hospitality suites, camera booth, press
box and one of small college basketball’s best home
court advantages. Aside from the arena, The Capital
Center features locker rooms, a fitness center, class-rooms
and offices. In addition, the basketball arena
is outfitted with a state-of-the-art camera system
which allows for live video streaming of all home
games on Capital’s athletics web page –
athletics.capital.edu.

9. The Ohio Athletic Conference
Capital University enters its 89th season as a member of the Ohio Athletic
Conference in 2014-15. The OAC is the nation’s third-oldest collegiate
athletic conference and from its beginnings in 1902 has never wavered in
its focus on the entire development of the student-athlete. The conference’s
unparalleled success of all its members on and off the playing field has made
the OAC one of the nation’s finest college conferences.
The OAC is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The OAC is older than the Rose Bowl, the
World Series and even the NCAA itself and has survived two world wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War
and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter
members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the
mid-1920s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities
at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently,
the conference consists of 10 members: Baldwin Wallace University,
Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University,
Marietta College, the University of Mount Union, Muskingum
University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein University and
Wilmington College.
Case Tech’s football team won the OAC’s first conference title with a
5-0-0 record. Outdoor track was added a year later and a third sport,
cross country, became a conference sport in 1914. More sports were
steadily added to the OAC’s repertoire throughout the years,
culminating in the addition of women’s sports in 1984. The OAC
currently sponsors championships in 21 sports, 11 men’s and 10
women’s. All 10 of the OAC institutions were founded in the 19th
century and have long and outstanding academic reputations.

While maintaining these high academic standards, Ohio Athletic
Conference teams and athletes consistently have enjoyed a great

competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the educational programs, academic
values that make the OAC one of the finest conferences in the nation.

10. 2013-14 Year in Review
14th Consecutive Season With .500 or Better OAC Record
After winning back-to-back Ohio Athletic Conference regular season championships, the Capital University men’s basketball team
entered the 2013-14 season looking to make it three straight conference titles. Capital returned 10 players from their 2012-13 roster,
while also adding a pair of transfers to help add depth to their squad. The Crusaders finished the 2013-14 season with an overall mark
of 12-14 and 9-9 record in OAC play. In addition, Capital also posted its 14th consecutive season with a record at or above .500 in the
conference.
Capital began the season with three wins in its first five contests, including a pair of double-digit victories over nonconference opponents
Thomas More College (Ky.) and Mount St. Joseph University, as well as notching a win in its first OAC regular season matchup against
Heidelberg. The Crusaders then turned the opposite direction, dropping four straight games over a span of 10 days. In those four losses,
Capital fell by a combined 27 points, battling tough in three of the four losses, which included a one-point loss to Baldwin Wallace
University, five-point loss to Denison University, and a 109-102 double-overtime defeat to Maryville College (Tenn.). The Crusaders then
rebounded in their final game of the December portion of their schedule, defeating Piedmont College (Ga.) by 18 points on day two of
the Transylvania Tournament in Lexington, Ky.
The month of January proved to host the Crusaders’ best win-loss percentage of the 2013-14 season, as they defeated five of eight
opponents in the middle of the conference schedule, including four wins by 14 points or more. In the five wins that Capital tallied in the
month of January, the Crusaders shot just under 50 percent from the field, while connecting on over 34 percent of their shots from three-point
range. After falling in three straight games, the Crusaders took advantage of consecutive home games, winning both in convincing
fashion, followed by yet another double-digit conference road victory at Muskingum. Capital ended the regular season winning three of its
final five games and earned the seventh seed in the OAC Tournament.
In the OAC Tournament, Capital faced sixth-seeded Baldwin Wallace, a team the Crusaders split with during the regular season, in Berea,
Ohio. After falling behind 38-31 in the opening half, the Crusaders found themsleves playing catch-up for the remainder of the game.
Capital cut the deficit to 10 points multiple times in the second half, only to fall by that margin to the Yellow Jackets in the first round
of the conference tournament. With the loss, the Crusaders exited the season having not advanced to the OAC Tournament semifinals for
the first time in seven seasons.

All-OAC Honorees
11
Jr. Forward - Andrew Bolka
Second Team All-OAC
So. Guard - AJ Dixon
Honorable Mention All-OAC
Serving as one of Capital’s main threats in the low post a
season ago, junior forward Andrew Bolka helped bolster the
Crusaders attack in the paint throughout the entire 2013-14
campaign.
Bolka, a Xenia, Ohio, native, garnered his first All-OAC
award last season, proving to be a force in the paint for the
Crusaders. Last year, he averaged 11.8 points per game and
6.9 rebounds per game, ranking him second in the conference
in rebounding and third in the league with a shooting
percentage of 59.6 percent.
Over the course of last season, Bolka posted five double-doubles,
leading Capital in rebounding 15 times and in
scoring on nine occassions. He tallied a career-high in points
(22) at Ohio Northern on Feb. 22, 2014, while also recording
a career-high in rebounds (12) against Mount Union on Jan.
20, 2014.
As one of the key components to the Crusaders backcourt
last season, sophomore guard AJ Dixon played a vital role by
leading the team in scoring and helping cause their opposition
fits on the defensive end.
Dixon, a Hilliard, Ohio, native, earned his first All-OAC
selection last year after leading the team in scoring with 13.8
points per game. He shot 39.7 percent from the floor, 35.1
percent from behind the arc and 79.8 percent from the free
throw line. In addition, Dixon ranked second on the the team
in assists (58) and steals (20), while also leading all Capital
guards in rebounds per game (3.5).
Throughout all of last season, Dixon led the Crusaders in
scoring six times, scoring in double figures in 14 of his 20
games played. In Capital’s 109-102, double overtime loss to
Maryville (Tenn.) on Dec. 17, 2013, he registered a career-high
37 points on an 11-of-25 shooting mark from the field,
including a season-high five made three-point shots.
13. 2014-15 Season Preview
2014-15 Men’s Basketball Season Preview: Crusaders Return Five Seniors, Eye OAC Championship
The Capital University men’s basketball team returns five seniors to its squad for the 2014-15 campaign, as the
Crusaders look to capture their third Ohio Athletic Conference Championship in four years.
Capital finished the 2013-14 season with a 12-14 overall record,
including a 9-9 mark in the OAC. It was the 14th consecutive
season in the 20-year tenure of head coach Damon Goodwin that
Capital posted a mark of .500 or better in conference play. With a
seventh-place finish during the OAC regular season the Crusaders
earned a spot in the OAC Tournament, eventually falling in ther
first round matchup at Baldwin Wallace. Capital’s first round
loss was the first time it did not advance to the OAC Tournament
semifinals in an outstanding record of seven seasons.
The Crusaders lose just two seniors to graduation from a season
ago, as the departure of post players Ben Jackson and Jared
Cashen, paves the way for a solid cast of players returning for
Capital.
Junior guard AJ Dixon (Hilliard, Ohio), the team’s leading scorer from a season ago,
returns for his third year after averaging 13.8 points per game, 3.5 rebounds and 2.9
assists in 20 games last season.
Of the five returning seniors, the Crusaders return three players in the backcourt and
three in the frontcourt. Senior post Andrew Bolka (Xenia, Ohio) leads the talented
group of seniors, averaging 11.8 points per game and a team-best 6.9 rebounds per
game a year ago.
Sophomore guard Curt Geise (Delphos, Ohio) also returns for his second season,
ranking fourth on the team last year with 7.9 points per game, while shooting an
outstanding 92.9 percent from the free throw line.
Other key returnees include sophomore guard Tyrel Jackson (Dublin, Ohio) and senior wing Mike Augustine
(Lexington, Ohio), both of which averaged over six points per game last season, having each played in 22 or more
games a year ago. Senior guard Adam Blake (Kingston, Ohio) and classmate in forward Daniel Ocke (Sidney, Ohio)
also return for their senior campaigns, having played in 26 and 25 games, respectively,
in 2013-14.
Junior wing Charles English (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore point guard Kersey Long
(Columbus, Ohio) also return to help bolster the Crusaders guard play, as both players
appeared in at least 18 games last season. Senior post Ben Danhoff (Clyde, Ohio) will
assume an increased role inside the paint for Capital this season, having contributed
in 25 of the team’s 26 games a year ago. Sophomores in wing Drew Fecko (Garfield
Heights, Ohio) and post Darrien Scott (Columbus, Ohio) also look to resume their
respective roles to help bolster the Crusaders depth off the bench.

the last eight seasons.
The Crusaders begin the season in November with back-to-back home games against
non-conference opponents Thomas More College (Ky.) and Wittenberg University.
Capital defeated Thomas More in its season opener a year ago, before falling to
Wittenberg on the road. A road trip then follows for the Crusaders, as they compete in a
weekend tournament hosted by Roanoke College in Salem, Va. on Nov. 21-22.
After its initial road trip of the season, Capital returns to the Capital Center for a
onegame home stand against local opponent Ohio Wesleyan University on Nov. 25
follows, before a matchup at Mount
St. Joseph University on Nov. 30. The first half of the OAC
regular season schedule begins with a two-game home stint
against two teams that were in the OAC Tournament finals
last year. The Crusaders will take on defending tournament
champion Wilmington College on Dec. 3 and John Carroll
University on Dec. 6.
Capital’s final three games of the 2014 portion of its schedule
take place on the road with matchups against Ohio Northern
University on Dec. 13, Mount Union on Dec. 16, and NCAA
Division I opponent from the Mid-American Conference, the
University of Miami (OH) on Dec. 29. The first of two matchups
against crosstown rival Otterbein
University takes place at home on Jan.
7, followed by back-to-back conference
contests on the road.
Three of the Crusaders final five games in
January are at home, with the other two
including trips to Muskingum University
on Jan. 21 and Wilmington on Jan. 28.
The final month of the regular season
features a trio of home and road OAC
matchups, including a road contest versus
Otterbein on Feb. 14.

16. Head Coach Damon Goodwin
Damon Goodwin has patrolled the sidelines as head men’s basketball coach at Capital University beginning with
the 1994-1995 season and has established the Crusaders as one of the elite programs in not only the Ohio Athletic
Conference but all of NCAA Division III. Goodwin also became the winningest coach in Capital men’s basketball
history by virtue of an 80-53 home win over Ohio Dominican on January 5, 2010.
A six-time OAC Coach of the Year (1996, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013) and National Association of Basketball
Coaches Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year (2009). Last season, Goodwin led the Crusaders to an even 9-9
record in conference, posting the program’s 14th consecutive season with a record at or above .500 in OAC play.
Despite just a 12-win season, the Crusaders earned a spot in the OAC Tournament, falling in the first round for just
the first time in an outstanding record of seven seasons. He also added two additional all-conference selections to
his coaching accolades, as junior forward Andrew Bolka and sophomore guard AJ Dixon earned second team and
honorable mention honors, respectively.
In 2012-13, Goodwin guided the Crusaders to their second consecutive OAC regular season championship. That
same season, senior forward Spencer Niekamp, the OAC Player of the Year, became the seventh player in program history to be named an All-
American after being chosen to the second team by the NABC.
Goodwin’s ability to mold and develop young talent was on full display during the 2009-10 season, as the Crusaders won 15 of their last 21
games to finish third in the OAC despite dressing only one senior. Capital would later advance to the OAC Semifinal while producing an All-Region
selection for the third consecutive season. Coach Goodwin earned his fourth OAC Coach of the Year honor for his efforts, and was also named to
the University of Dayton Athletic Hall of Fame that year.
The Crusaders enjoyed their best season in program history in 2008-2009 as Goodwin guided Capital to a school-record 26 victories and a berth
in the NCAA “Round of 16”. Capital made their third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and were nationally ranked throughout the entire
regular season reaching a program-record mark of No. 5 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll. Capital had the best home record in the Great Lakes
Region at 15-0 and was a host of the NCAA First and Second Rounds at the Capital Center in front of sold out crowds.
The 2008-09 campaign also saw Goodwin mentor the OAC Player of the Year, two All-OAC First Team selections and the first-ever back-to-back
consensus All-America pick in school history. For his efforts, Goodwin was named Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year by the National
16
Association of Basketball Coaches.
In 2007-2008, Goodwin led Capital to its second straight Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title and second straight NCAA Tournament
appearance. The Crusaders also won 24 games, had the OAC Player of the Year and first All-American for the school since 1988, and Goodwin
claimed OAC Coach of the Year honors for a second straight season and third time in his career.
Other highlights of his tenure on the bench in Columbus include making the NCAA Tournament and winning OAC Coach of the Year honors in just
his second season at Capital in 1996-97. In 2001-2002, he led Capital to a then school-record 23 wins, while in 2002-03 he brought the school
its first OAC regular season title in 19 seasons. He is only the second coach in school
history to win over 200 games.
Prior to becoming the Crusaders head coach, he served five seasons as an assistant
coach at Wittenberg University. During his time there, the Tigers won five North
Coast Athletic Conference titles, earned four NCAA Tournament bids and a final four
appearance in 1994.
As a player, the St. Marys, Ohio, native earned first team All-Ohio honors at St. Marys
Memorial High School in 1982, before attending the University of Dayton. He helped
lead the Flyers to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1984 and 1985 where the
eventual national champion (Georgetown and Villanova) eliminated them each season.
Upon leaving Dayton, Goodwin was taken in the seventh round (147 overall) of the
NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns. He spent the summer out west before returning that
fall to begin his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Dayton.
Goodwin’s first head coaching job was a two-year stint at Fairborn High School in
Fairborn, Ohio, before joining the staff at Wittenberg.
Goodwin resides in Upper Arlington, Ohio, with his wife, Danielle. The couple has three
children - Grant (24), Addison (22), a senior at Dayton, and Dane (15).
17. Assistant Coaches
17
Anthony Gholson - Assistant Coach
Anthony Gholson enters his second season as an assistant men’s basketball coach for the Capital University men’s
basketball team.
Prior to Capital, Gholson served as head men’s basketball coach at Heidelberg University, where he led the Student
Princes to more than 50 victories over the course of five seasons (2008-13). Gholson guided Heidelberg to the 2010 OAC
Tournament championship game.
Gholson was also the head coach (2000-04) and director of athletics (1999-05) at Columbus State Community College.
While at CSCC, Gholson’s teams compiled an 86-36 record (.704 winning percentage) and a trio of 20-win seasons. The
Cougars were ranked No. 1 in NJCAA Division II in 2003-04, when the team won the Ohio Community College Athletic
Conference title for the first time in school history. He was named the conference’s Coach of the Year in both 2002-03 and 2003-04.
Gholson also held assistant coaching positions at Ohio Northern University (2005-08) and Urbana University (2004-05).
He earned his bachelor’s from Ohio Northern in 1988 and his MBA from Bowling Green State University in 1995.
Andy Winters - Assistant Coach
Andy Winters joins Capital after spending the 2013-14 season as a member of the men’s basketball staff at Ohio
Domincan University.
Winters helped lead the Panthers to the most conference overall wins since their first season as a member of NCAA
Division II in 2010-11. In just one season, ODU improved in multiple statistical categories including field goal
percentage, three-point field goal percentage, and turnovers per game.
Prior to joining the staff at Ohio Dominican, Winters was an All-American and four-year starter at nearby Ohio Wesleyan
University. As a senior, he was tabbed All-America status and was named the district or regional Player of the Year by
the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), D3.Hoops.com, and D3 News. By the end of his playing career,
Winters had become a three-time all-conference selection, North Coast Athletic Conference All-Decade Team honoree,
broke all the school’s assist records, and participated in the NABC All-Star Game.
While playing at Ohio Wesleyan, his teams posted back-to-back 20-plus win seasons and in each of those years were participants in the NCAA
Division III Tournament. As part of his senior year, Winters and the Battling Bishops hosted the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the first
time since 1988. That year, he found himself in the top five nationally for assists (204) and assists per game (7.03), and averaged a team-best
14.1 points per contest.
Off of the court, Winters has worked with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization and is a member of the National Association of Basketball
Coaches Service organization.
Winters obtained his Bachelor of Education in history from OWU in 2013. He is a Columbus native and is a 2009 graduate of Bishop Watterson
High School.
Vaughn Spaulding - Assistant Coach
Vaughn Spaulding joins the Capital men’s basketball coaching staff for his first season in 2014-15, serving as an assistant coach.
Prior to coming to Capital, he was a four year varsity basketball player at Ohio Wesleyan University, where he graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor
of Arts in Marketing and Finance, along with a minor in accounting.
Over the course of his playing career at Ohio Wesleyan (2009-13), Spaulding played in 95 games, starting in 66 games over the course of four
seasons. In 2013, he averaged a career best 5.9 points per game, shooting 51.2 percent from the field, while also tying for third on the team in
rebounds with 130.
From his 2011-13 seasons at Ohio Wesleyan, the Battling Bishops posted back-to-back 20-plus win seasons, including consecutive appearances
in the NCAA Division III Tournament. As part of his senior year, Spaulding and the Battling Bishops hosted the first round of the NCAA Tourna-ment
for the first time since 1988.
