How to use site map for better results in search engine
1. How to use Site Map for Better Results in Search Engine
Every other page of a website is linked by a site map. By linking a site map from your
homepage shows that every page on your site is just a click away from the site map and
that your homepage is just two clicks away. This makes it easy for spider to find the rest of
your web pages. As we know, spiders locate new pages through the links already in their
indexed list. So in order to get your web pages crawled by search engine spiders, you must
link your web pages to other pages - the spider already knows of. However, until you have a
small web site, linking pages to your homepage is not a good idea as it appears to be highly
unprofessional and unorganized. Therefore, linking all other pages of your website to a site
map and the site map to the home page is far more a better idea as it will get all the pages
indexed. By doing so, your homepage does not get jumbled and all the pages of your web
site are easily found and indexed.
We have discussed the importance of linking to site maps from homepage. For better
results, you must link every single page of your web site on the site map that makes it easy
for search engines to locate your web pages via site maps if they fail to find your home
page due to unknown reasons.
To certify whether our web pages have been indexed by search engines or not, they
themselves ask us to use site map for this very purpose. Apparently, Google itself has its
very own site map program.
Site Maps for huge sites
Want a large web site? And wondering as to whether you must have a large site or one with
numerous smaller site maps. This affects a number of other factors that are to be
considered.
Firstly, the quality of your link is one area that ultimately decides the intensity with which
search engines index links on a page or the pages on a site. If any site has scarce incoming
links, then making the page smaller and inserting less number of links on them sounds
better.
To be on the safer side, make it a point to set a limit of 101k of HTML code and a maximum
of 100 links per page. As obviously, popular pages will easily get most of their pages
indexed. Henceforth, if your site is less than 100 pages then creating a site map of less than
101k will prove to be profitable. And by being the only site map it will direct search engines
to the entire site.
The advantage of having one site map positioned under one domain is that, it permits
search engine spiders to find and index your site without having to go over the entire site
not less than two links beyond your homepage – i.e. from the site map to other pages on
the site and from the home page to site map. This makes finding a page on your site an
easy task for search engine spiders.
Your site map web pages need to be split up into small site maps. If for instance, your site
map reaches up to 100 or more links or if your site map web page reaches 101k of file size
excluding images then its time to split up. We suggest that from the homepage you link to
each site map, for example, five links would be required from the homepage instead of one
for five site maps. End result being that the spider reaches rest of the pages of your site by
only going to the utmost of two links besides your homepage.
2. If, due to any reason, you are not able to place five links on five site maps on the
homepage then it is advisable to set a single link on the homepage that points to the main
site map containing five links to the five minor site maps. This method demands that the
spider travels three links deep into a site, indexing and locating all the website's pages – a
good sign. Therefore, link from all the site maps to all the other pages of the website and
not just to the homepage.
