Scary movie 2 opening scene:
The scene opens with an establishing shot of the house which makes the house seem scary because
the audience are able to see that it is a very big house amongst some trees and grass and it is a dark
night outside which emphasizes on the scary atmosphere that is being set.
Right after the first shot of the house, the next shot shows a group of people gathering around a
piano. The song they are singing is upbeat and “jolly” song. This relaxes the scary atmosphere that
was set in the previous shot as the people do not look scared about being in such a scary looking
home- they look quite comfortable.
The Mid-shot of the person playing the piano allows the audience to see his costume. The use of the
costume code allows the audience to know that the movie may not be the usual horror film but it is
in fact a horror-comedy. This is because the audience are able to see that the person playing the
piano is in fact a reverend and the song that they are singing is not a gospel song.
After, the mother beats her daughter, the scene switches to a shot of a car being driven in the dark
which then suggests to the audience that the next seen will be one that focuses more on the horror
side of the movie. This is because you cannot see anything else other than the light coming from the
headlights of the car. Furthermore, the non-diegetic sound as to the tension of the next scene as it is
music that starts of low and ends up getting about louder and the instruments used within the
sound are usually ones used when trying the make something seem scary.
