This document provides classroom highlights from Room 12. It discusses their term concept of "Lift Off to Learning" and focusing on becoming lifelong learners. Some of their learning activities included designing stationery, reading Roald Dahl books, measuring hands and feet, addition and subtraction, camp activities, writing recounts and narratives, using ICT, reading groups, and participating in sports and a community picnic.
1. Welcome to the Room 12 Classroom Highlights page. This term we are on a mission to become Life Long
Learners. This Term our concept topic is ‘Lift Off to Learning’. During this term we are looking at how we learn,
ways to focus our learning and how to use our CORE Learning Skills to make us Life Long Learners.
We are currently looking at Life Long Learners in our community and the challenges they face.
We hope you enjoy Room 12’s classroom highlights which have been chosen and written by the students of
Room 12 (With a little bit of a helping hand from Mr McDonald)
(with some help).
CONCEPT
Term 1 Lift Off to Learning Highlights:
We have been talking about and using the the skills of a Life
Long Learner like taking risks, being committed, working
together, getting involved, being focused, asking questions
and trying our best.
We worked in groups to design a piece of stationery for The
Warehouse. Some of the things we came up with were pair
of scissors that were also a calculator, a diary, a diary
calculator, A cool brown folder, a splat shaped diary and a
cool coloured pencil case. At the end of the activity we
reflected on our learning and set goals for our next lot of
group work. You can see these on our wiki page.
Teacher Reading – Every weekday afternoon Mr McDonald reads us a Roald Dahl book for about 5 to 10 minutes.
The book we are reading now is Matilda. We have all really enjoyed reading these books and all hope to borrow one
during Library time. We even have plans to watch the movie ‘Matilda’ at the end of the term.
MATHS
Measurement
We have been estimating and measuring the length and width of our feet
and hands in centimetres.
Addition and Subtraction
We have been learning to solve addition and subtraction problems. We all
work in maths groups and do different activities each day. Some of the
activities are working with Mr McDonald, using counters and blocks, doing
activities on the wiki, playing maths games and working from sheets and in
our books.
2. CAMP
This term we all went on Camp. We didn’t get to sleep in tents so we
had a big sleep-over in the Hall and Room 23 and 24. Some of our
favourite activities were making lunch, sleeping in the hall or
classrooms, washing our own dishes, the water slide, games, the
concert, morning exercise, the food and playing our recorders and
performing a skit at the concert
WRITING
This term we have been learning how to write recounts and narratives. We wrote recounts about our school
holidays, swimming, camp and erecting a tent. As part of our learning about narratives we created a character of
our own and used it to make a Character Chain. You should come and see them one day in Room 12.
ICT
This year we have been using ICT to help us with our
learning. We have used the camera to film our recorder
playing, our group work goals and our favourite bits of
camp. We all get to use the camera to take photos and
we listen to stories on the class listening post.
Mr McDonald showed us what a computer looks like on
the inside and we all had turns at pull parts out and
touching them. We really enjoy using the computers
and other ICT in our room and creating our own wiki.
Reading Groups and Spelling
For reading we have been using STEPS on our class computers. Mrs Taylor has been helping some people with their
reading. We work in Reading Groups to help us to become better readers. We have read all kinds of great books and
enjoy sharing our reading with the class.
SPORT – Every second Thursday afternoon we go out for sport. We have all enjoyed
being part of a sports house. Our sports houses are Kakapo, Kea, Ruru, Tui, Kotuku, and
Weka. Our sports houses are named after native New Zealand birds.
COMMUNITY PICNIC
This term we were involved in the Pukekohe Hill School Community Picnic. We made Rice Bubble Slice and Choc-Peanut Butter
Spiders and sold them from our stall on the top field. Room12 kids ran the stall by selling our food, taking money, giving change
and chatting with our customers. We also made colourful photo frames with pictures of us in them to sell to our parents.
